Report: Joe Riggs hospitalized, won't rematch Nick Diaz on Aug. 15 for Strikeforce

Another one bites the dust.
Joe Riggs has been forced out of his upcoming rematch against Nick Diaz for the first-ever Strikeforce welterweight title at "Carano vs. Cyborg" from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on Aug. 15.
GracieFighter.com reports that "Diesel" suffered "a bad reaction to an as of yet undisclosed drug" and "will be recovering in the hospital for the next couple of weeks."
The good news is that Diaz plans to still compete on the card; however, no possible replacement is known at this time. Of course, Riggs joins Alistair Overeem on the recently-scratched list for the promotion's upcoming event, which originally featured four championship bouts.

Can’t say I’m that disappointed in this news…Riggs didn’t deserve a shot at Diaz. Nick has been climbing the ladder and he deserves a bigger fight than this but I’ll admit that I was kinda looking forward to Diaz teaching Riggs a lesson.

never liked riggs anyways that crybaby!
nick needs to fight kj to avenge that cheap cut win for kj noons.. did anyone else see bj penn’s youtube page where kj trained oneday then kj trained with bj the next?

Nick Diaz has to return to the UFC for fuck sake! Admittedly, I don’t think he can beat the higher echelon like Alves and GSP, but there would still be lots of great match-ups for him.

He’s definately quickly running out of prospective fights in Strikeforce, that’s for sure. He’s already going up and down in weight to make interesting and competative fights. Riggs was a stretch in my opinion, Diaz would have worked him over. He’

This is EXCELLENT FOCKING NEWS! Diaz should be in shape and ready to go, and now there is nothing holding him back from fighting Jorge Santiago at Affliction 3 next saturday! WHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Best news so far this week! There has been no talk about Diaz/Santiago because Diaz was an intrical part of the August strikeforce card, but strikeforce wont have anyone worthy for him to face, so I am going on RECORD, pREDICTING RIGHT NOW, that we will See Santiago/Diaz at Affliction 3! If it happens, this fight will be nothing short of AMAZING!!!!!
Fingers Crossed! Lets go Atencio, prove me to be a prophet once again!

It’s done, Diaz vs Santiago – Belfort vs Fedor!!
I’m watching big brother right now and this was def the right time to backdoor Riggs to save the Affliction card!

Good focking call John. That would be just as good a match imo. Strikeforce and Affliction need to go out with a bang so that at least we will remember them fondly.

mahde~ strikeforce isnt going anywhere..
affliction?~ most likely, but i hope not.
john~ i think that match up is very possible as well as grim fighting werdum at the next strikeforce..
it seems like vitor will be fighting fedor
and i heard strikeforce wont let grim fight fedor cause they were in the middle of working something out so brett could fight werdum.
if those fights happen, both shows should still be decent..
personally?~ i want to see vitor fight santiago and grim to fight fedor. leaving nick without an opponent, but hopefully strikeforce can get ‘nacy boy noons’ to fight diaz..
by stinky~fingers on Jul 24, 2009 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions
bitch nancy boy noons walks around at about 175/180~
if he is in shape[which he should be] he could make 170 for aug/15..
i say keep the vitor/santiago fight!!

All week, while everyone has been complaining about Fedor vs. Vitor, I have been posting about how much Vitor scares me, as Fedor’s #1 cocksucker! Seems like I was right! Check out what Fedor had to say about Vitor fight:
You know, I’m being really honest here. I am equally interested in a fight with either Belfort or Rogers. I’ve never fought with either one. I used to watch Belfort fight, even before I started competing. So there is a history there for me with him. It is very interesting to me; he was a fighter who faced and beat a lot of the greatest fighters in MMA at the time. Rogers is a fighter who is tearing through the heavyweight division with 10 fights and 10 wins. And, I have to add, he beat Arlovski.
“To be honest, in terms of his speed at that weight, I honestly don’t know if being heavier is an advantage with a fighter who is as fast as him at his current weight. I have always found it harder to fight the lighter, faster guys, rather than the really big, plodding heavy and super heavyweights. And Belfort has always stood out in terms of his speed.”
by John G on Jul 24, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions
THanks guys! Hope I am right! I just think Affliction needs to get NIck Diaz to face Jorge! It NEEDS TO HAPPEN!
Affliction did strikeforce a huge favor by shipping Arlovski over to fight for them TWICE, the last time, basically being a stepping stone for the young career of one of strikeforce’s few promising heavyweights (Grim). ko’ing Arlovski, ruined one of Afflictions major assets and simultaneously gave a big boost to strikeforce, with grim’s jump in the rankings!
TIME FOR STRIKEFORCE TO PAY AFFLICTION BACK FOR THE HUGE FAVOR AFFLICTION DID FOR THEM!!!!!

Rampage wins, and Kongo wins… fun thing about Belfort vs Fedor is that they’re at the same height or Belfort may even be a bit taller

If Mir can figure out how to get it to the ground, he’ll tie Kongo in knots. If Mir is still in love with his alleged striking abilities he will get KTFO.
by PW on Jul 24, 2009 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions
Interesting Kongo vs Mir. Mir fancies himself as a top striker nowadays, if he tries it on with Kongo it’ll be a short night for him. Mir’s TD’s suck big time but so does Kongo’s TD defence, so you’ve gotta beleve Mir can take him down. If that happens Kongo’s bang in trouble as the upturned turtle is no defence against Mir’s jits.

10% ~ really??
i agree with pw’s break down~ so that makes it 50/50 for me..

Lol I know when he caught Brock with that knee it went straight to his head. I have a bad feeling about this fight but I will still be rooting for Mir by achilles lock.

btw I tried out the match up on fightnight and Mir KO’d Kongo, whooo! I am now predicting Mir by devestating uppercut, this game can’t be wrong!
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jul 24, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions
yeah i don’t think he has what it takes to submit Kongo.. I’ve seen Kongo’s sub defense and it is better than u would think!..
Mir also gives up when someone’s hitting him in the face too hard which is what Kongo’s gonna do!
by RoB on Jul 24, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions
Get a clue! This is the beginning of Mir fulfilling my prophecy about him getting exposed and becoming irrelevant. Kongo is a tough guy to take down. It takes a great wrestler with strength to take Kongo down, and sorry…mir does not fit the description. KONGO VIA 1ST ROUND tko!!!!!!!!
i LOVE IT, THE BROCK FIGHT WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE END for the gREAT WHITE HYPE!!!!

sorry but mir definitely doesnt ‘give up’ when hes getting hit in the face..
if he ever tapped due to strikes, but mir always rids out the beating and lets the ref stop it..
u wont see mir tapping from punches.~.
i do agree though~ kongo has improved his sub defense..
either way it should be a good one..

lol john~ ur hate for mir is getting stronger day by day~
surely u would give mir a decent chance at beating kongo?
by stinky~fingers on Jul 24, 2009 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions
Mir certainly “gives up” any semblance of mounting offence when he’s getting whacked in the face and seems to abandon all defence too and seems content to block punches with his face.
by attakdog on Jul 24, 2009 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions
yes he does, all he does is covering up so that the ref “can” come in and stop it!..
by RoB on Jul 24, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions
yeah dood~ when u get punched in the face and it rocks u, defending yourself is easy right??
that is how a tko happens, understand?
the fact that mir doesnt tap due to strikes shows he is not afraid to get ko’d. meaning ‘giving up’ is the last thing running through his mind~

by roy on Jul 24, 2009 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions
I wouldn’t describe mir as being tough. He just lies there and lets the ref come in, instead of trying to whether the storm by bettering his positon.
It was exactly the same when Ian Freeman was reigning down blows on him back at UFC 37 or whatever, his natural instinct is to just lie there and be rescued instead of fighting on at all costs.

I am DONE coming to this site for the week. Everytime I come here there is bad news followed by, well, more bad news. WTF!
I am not sure that Stikeforce will be so willing go give up Diaz to the Affliction card to face Santiago. I would love it, but don’t think its likely. Strikeforce seems to be wanting to keep thier August card in tact as much as possible and Diaz is a big draw for them. Strikeforce should be looking for an opponent for Diaz for their card instead of lending out thier best fighters for Affliction’s last event.
I agree that Riggs didnt’ deserve a fight against Diaz, but after the ‘hype’ I really wanted to see it go down. Curious as to what “DRUG” the diesel was on?

Drop some knowledge on me.
What about Diaz/Shields, Diaz/Lawler 2?
Werdum/Fedor?
BTW- I don’t like Mir either but I admit that both he and Borck (obviously)impressed me more in their 2nd match than in the first fight. Both show alot of improvement. Mir is alot of things but he is not a pussy. No one who fights for a living is a pussy.

Stinky: I dont hate Mir, I just dont think he is a very good mixed martial artist. He is a 1 dimensional ju jitsu fighter, and I have really no idea how good his jits is since he wont compete in ADCC, and he wont go to the ground against anyone worth a damn….He has a great shot at beating Kongo, if the fight hits the ground. I dont think Mir can get the fight to the ground, so I give him very little chance…but if they do get to the floor, Kongo is done. I hate Mir, but I keep it real!

Gutted about Affliction, makes the loss of Diaz-Riggs even worse. This was going to be an easy win for Nick and a chance to become a champion as well as avenge an embarrassing defeat, Riggs is a joke and like VM I want to know what this “drug” was. Hopefully Nick will have a quality opponent lined up as he has been the star of the new look Strikeforce and the card won’t be the same without him. Awful week for MMA, don’t know how it can get any worse.
I’m a proud member of the I hate Frank Mir club and running for chairmanship of the I hate Cheick Kongo club, seriously both of them are arrogant, overrated and one dimensional, either Kongo destroys Mir standing or Mir submits Kongo as soon as it hits the ground, neither man will ever be a UFC HW champion again (unless the division goes back to the days when Sylvia and Monson were at the top). I’ll be happy to see either man lose, then laugh when they both lose their next fights. Either Mir is getting KO’d or Kongo is getting an arm snapped Sylvia style, win-win for me.

regardless of the details of these stories, its things like this that will stop mma from fully hitting mainstream and getting bigger. espn and other outlets wont want to cover a sport like this to begin with but this really will stop them from getting involved in any way.
by bobby o'shea on Jul 24, 2009 9:04 AM EDT reply actions
Hey I’m as disappointed as the next guy with all the fights being lost for so many different reasons. But if you think that is going to stop the ground swell surrounding MMA you really need to rethink that. The UFC fan expo has well over 50,000 people there. Then all the PPV buys for UFC 100 indicate it will break the UFC record with well over 1 million buys. Dana White has been on some very major programs over the past year, and really turned up the heat in the last month before UFC 100. Also, you have the more popular MMA fighters appearing on different news and talk shows for different reason.
How is any of that a bad thing. Granted Affliction is in trouble because of the thing with Barnett, but this could have been their last show anyway, even if Barnett had fought.
The UFC is a the big dog here, and even when one of it’s champions tested positive for steriods a while be (Sean Sherk) it didn’t stop the momentum. These other fight associations only go to help the momentum of MMA, not hurt it. This isn’t going to happen over night booby, and it hasn’t. But the fact that there are 2-3 really good cards and a bunch of great fights this month and people are talking about it tells you it’s getting more mainstream. If you were a fan even 5-6 years ago, you know that all we had was Pride and every now and then some good K-1 fights. So that was only a few solid cards a year, and NO ONE was covering it! Where are we now? A LLLOOONNNNGGGGGG WAY from there! This isn’t Kansas anymore Toto!

by DJ on Jul 24, 2009 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions
How? Whilst Riggs has been scraping decisions over Phil Baroni, Diaz has been destroying top fighters in the division above and has never looked better. Diaz was going to walk through Riggs and from the sound of it it was Diesel’s own fault for getting hospitalised in the first place, “bad reaction to a drug” sounds very suspect to me.

This is another reason why these organizations with a shallow talent pool end up going under. I’m sure these organizations can find replacement fighters, however, their chance of actually winning are very slim. UFC has a very deep and well-known talent pool thanks to TUF. Affliction has no way to groom and promote up and coming fighters, Strikeforce does, but it’s in its’ infancy and certainly not as high profile as TUF. Like it or not, TUF is a genius move because these relatively unknown fighters get tons of exposure prior to even fighting in the UFC.

But we just lost hammil, lost Houston, lost Anthony Johnson, and much more I’m too lazy to look up. Lol but I remember being upset! The difference is that UFC has enough talent to easily replace injured fighters with someone just as good. You still get a good fight, and the only people disappointed are the ones who really wanted to to see the injured fighter.

Shields-Diaz would be an awesome fight but it’s never going to happen and even by some miracle it does there is no way that it should be a last minute addition, as it is easily a main event caliber fight for SF.

Jake Shields knows he woud get his ass beat down by GSP, Alves if he ever had the guts to join the best organization in the world UFC. Fedor will beat Vitor for sure. Nick Diaz is a joke and lost to Sanchez, The Heat Karo, anyone ese from UFC. LOL

Can someone explain to me why Strikeforce Fighters need to save the Affliction Show? If your not aware Scott Coker has been signing talent to Exclusive contracts over the past few months. There is a reason for that.

Exclusive contracts?? Can anyone else confirm this as its news to me…obviously not all fighters are signed to those types of contracts…ie. AA

I heard him on a radio show shortly after they announced there deal with showtime. I don’t think Arlovski is a Strikeforce fighter, he has a contract with Affliction I would assume and those are none exclusive. I believe the only way you see Strikeforce talent on the Affliction show is if they work out some sort of deal between the promotions. I just don’t understand why they would make a deal if its going to hurt the August 15th Strikeforce show.

DAMMIT put up an opinion column, update something, even another pointless not yet updated Barnett thread! Anything! Lol you guys should have a new thread every 30-60 mins bare minimum! I can’t confirm the exclusive contracts but I can tell you strikeforce is doing everything right and making affliction look like the inexperienced rookies they are. The biggest Flaw to me that ufc is STILL missing but boxing and STRIKEFORCE have had since day 1 is a stats recap right after the fight!! Man it may not seem like much, but could u imagine the extra side bets we could make? What percentage will spiders landed punches be against Forrest? How many takedowns will gsp score against swick/kampmann? (hell u could even do an over/under 10 for that since he got 10 on alves ha ah) or how many ground strikes from lesnar? Come on Dana how far behind us this? And come on mmamaniacs how fun would that be? Ah! I want it!

This is why to many orgs dont work. Rosters are to thin.
Well now we can see if all these orgs who claim there differant and it it for the fans and fighters and all the BS that they would cross promote.
Strikeforce send Werdum to Affliction
Affliction send Antiago to Strikeforce
Well see how differant these guys claim they are!
I personally didnt care for this fight anyways, I hate Riggs, he really isnt that good.
