Miguel Torres: 'Floyd Mayweather is a cocky A-hole and I will smash his ass'

Props: Yahoo Sports
Quoteworthy:
"I would love to fight Mayweather, just because of the simple fact that I think he's a cocky asshole ... I'm not a white person, and I will smash his ass. I don't care. His style of boxing is all built on getting people in the clinch. He'll hit them, and then he'll get in the clinch with them. Then the referee breaks them, and he'll hit them and grab them again. I think it's a great strategy. It's not clean boxing, but it's smart boxing. He's going to hit somebody and grab them in MMA, and he'll be done for. They'll take him down. That'll be all. I'll be on top of the list to fight him."
Fresh off his cobra venom and lions blood performance at last night's White Sox game, WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres responds to boxing big-mouth Floyd Mayweather who recently slammed mixed martial arts as a sport for beer drinkers and white people. The non-Anglo Torres takes exception to the Mayweather generalization and promises to show "Pretty Boy" an eight-sided beatdown should he ever be man enough to find his way to the cage. Torres (37-1), who is widely considered the best bantamweight in the world, will next fight Brian Bowles (7-0) and defend his title once again in the WEC 42 main event on August 9 while Mayweather will go head-to-head with Juan Manuel Marquez inside the ring and UFC 103 outside of it on Sept. 19.

i like it but he is very wrong about how floyd fights….hes allways using footwork to get in and out and he doesnt clinch that much the clinch just happens in boxing all the time

its not about pay, its about mma vs boxing. miguel does ok, and mayweather’s pay is a good example of the downfall of boxing!

it doesn’t matter what kind of fight it is, mayweather WOULD KO torres. good foot work along with a good jab could keep torres at bay till he dropped a right hand on him.

Sac have you ever seen Torres fight? He’s as good with his lead kick (a kickboxers jab) as Mayweather is with his jab. We shouldn’t even be talking about who would win, in a boxing match obviously Mayweather but in an MMA fight Torres would murder him. As good of a boxer as he is the fact of the matter is he would simply be a one dimensional fighter in the cage. Besides i don’t understand why people can’t grasp the fact that boxing in a boxing match is different than boxing in MMA. No resting in the clinch, no setting your feet no blocking with the gloves. He’s got a punchers chance and that’s assuming he can learn how to throw a punch and not leave himself wide open for the TD.
by the_Cannibal on Jul 24, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions
you can’t say “keep him at bay”. Torres could use his kicks, which have way longer range than PBF’s jabs, he could ko him with a head kick or a flying knee, or he could shoot right away.

“I’ve noticed there’s been a few comments he shouldn’t have thrown that second punch. Fair play to the guy. He had his job to do and you’ve got to carry on ’til the ref pulls you off. Full respect to Dan Henderson, he did the job and he did it well. So well done.”

Torres may as well call out Darth Vader.
It’s pointless dude, WEC’s yearly production budget is lower than what Floyd makes in one fight. And Floyd would never dare fight MMA rules.
And, sadly, in the mainstream sporting world and in households across the globe, Torres is still an unknown and Floyd is a star. The low weight classes in MMA still haven’t garnered much attention on this side of the pond. Don’t flame me for saying this, because I hate every totally true word of it.

boxing purses have always been higher..i don’t think they should strive to pay that much to anybody..i got burned before for saying that mike tyson made 1 million dollars a second for his 10 second fight..sure..lots of the lower fighters in mma only make 8 grand..or double if they win..but people like georges or any of the cash cows make 400 000..plus endorsements..that is descent..i think it’s f*cked up how sports stars (of any sport) make crazy millions..and it’s too lop sided..
you ask me..boxing came from crooked money..and i would not be surprised if many fights were fixed.

This is just a matter of what fight it is. If its a boxing match then MAYWEATHER wins in a couple of rounds. If its a MMA match then TORREZ kills him in the firs 30 seconds.

“I’m not as big of a draw as Brock Lesnar, but I have more personality than him; I’m more interesting than he is. I’ve heard Brock Lesnar. I’ve interviewed him. It’s like talking to the Hulk. “So Brock, what did you think about the fight?” “Brock smash Mir, Brock eat baby, I’m gonna drink a Coors, and maybe get on my wife.” That’s Brock’s interview! He’s getting paid millions of dollars for that. That’s their heavyweight champion, getting paid all this money, from out of nowhere Minnesota! I know he’s a draw because he came from the WWE, and he’s bringing a different fanbase in, but we’re a draw, we just have no exposure." —-Torres.

hey Miggy, fight and beat some guys with more than 10% of the fights/experience u got, then u can talk like u’ve done something. beating guys that are 7-0, 5-1, etc… just doesn’t cut it in my book! a lot of the guys he’s fought and beat could just as easily be fighting at the beatdown at a local rural armory! Floyd Mayweather is 10x the combat fighter miggy is. floyd would hit him like 10-12 times b4 miguel felt the first one land. I’m a die hard mma enthusiast and a person that thinks boxing has lost its luster, but thinking a mma pro can just easily beat a top boxer is just lunacy. pro boxers’ hand speed is faster than anything these mma fighters have ever seen, in a cage, ring, or even in training. if they could put together 8-10 punch combo’s with speed like top pro boxers do, then they’d be boxers. they’re not boxers so evidently they’re not as good with their hands

I’m with ya NorCal on the Manny smashing Floydd thing
by McArthur on Jul 24, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions
One thing everyone forgets when talking about floyd is that his hands are brittle. He breaks them all the time with 12oz training gloves on. So you think when you take away all that padding its gonna help him. If he throws hard and hits the top or side of the head his hand will break. Unless he ko’s them, which he dosent do that often,(most of his ko’s are perfectly timed punches to an already tired opponent not tyson type ko) he will either quit or run.
by Drew on Jul 24, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions
hey deuce, Miggy spent many years fighting guys in mma when there weren’t lower weight classes. Alot of his fight are against bigger guys, so i say nay to the experience thing. And I’ll give you Mayweather is fast, but he does lack power. If he iss close enough to throw 8-10 punch combos he will be soon after hitting the mat. He can get away with it in boxing because he can’t be taken down. Change the rules and his style will have to change…..or he will get beat so bad it won’t be funny….at all…..well it would to me ;)

why would dana only offer him a wrestler?! why wouldn’t he offer mayweather bj penn?? oh i know, cause dana knows that the only person in his org. that could beat mayweather is a pure wrestler who’d be too coward to stand for a second with floyd mayweather. he knows nobody in his org. that would stand with mayweather would stand a chance in the fight. bj penn would try to test out his boxing skills against mayweather, and he would get destroyed standing w/ a professional boxer!!

No, Dana offered him Sherk because at that time Sherk was the lightweight champion. You are a dumbass anyway. Miguel,
Don’t worry. Your fellow Mexican warrior, Marquez, will punk Mayweather for you.
MMA fans, please don’t let that D-Bag, Mayweather, speak for boxing fans/fighters in general.
Even the hardcore boxing purists hate Mayweather as a person.
He is a very good boxer but a terrible example out of the ring.
Pacman, Cotto, the K Bros., Marquez, Hatton, the late Gatti, etc. all outshine this poor version of a human being known as Mayweather.

Marquez gave Pacman pure hell in their 2 very close fights.
Mayweather has been out for awhile and has not truly been tested (please don’t say Hatton, who is an overachiever).
Speed is not a problem for Marquez, just ask Pacman.

Its a dilemma for me, too. Invite a posse over for both events and charge 5 bucks a head (are they on the same night?)…

Manny will eventually shut him up. I doubt we’ll ever see him take an “MMA rules” fight against a high caliber opponent. So, the best we can hope for is Marquez or Manny to sever his lips from his face, so that he’ll have to spew his nonsense using sign language.

Obviously in an MMA match Torres any half competent fighter would take Floyd down and sub him in under 30 seconds. Just like floyd would KO any half decent MMA practitioner in a boxing match in roughly the same time!

by Dragon on Jul 24, 2009 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Generally I agree with this method. Not responding to trolls kills the troll. However, if he was asked about it in an interview he was probably just responding. Also this could be a big money/exposure fight for Torres. He’s hyping a potential fight. That’s part of what these guys do. But Floyd is like Lesnar. As long as his skill backs up his mouth, people will have no choice but to pay attention.
by wAyNe on Jul 24, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Kevin-
Agree with K-Dog. This guy is looking to stir up the pot because he knows that MMA is on the rise and boxing has been on the decline for awhile (and I love boxing).
He doesn’t have the guts to challenge fighters who have the best chance to beat him (until Marquez) so he has to revert to trashing MMA—-knowing that he would NEVER step foot in the MMA world.
To quote K-Dog, " There’s a better chance of a rocking horse filling up a bucket of shit. "
by OJR on Jul 24, 2009 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Floyd’s not koing anyone in 30 seconds who is worthy of steping in the ring with him. I would bet floyd dosent even throw a punch within the first 30 seconds.
by Drew on Jul 24, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions
No MMA practitioner would be worthy of being in the ring with him, so I believe he would KO any of them in under 30seconds should he desire. You’re right though, he’d probably dance around and try make an opponent look stupid rather than go for the quick KO.

Ill be honest I am a bit biased on floyd, i believe he is one of the best boxers on the planet right now. I do think that BJ penn would give him a competive fight in the boxing ring. Floyd would ultimately win and probably outclass BJ but he would not KO anyone with a decent chin in under 8 rounds.

I would love for anyone to smash floyd. He may be one of the best boxer’s but he is certainly not one of the best fighters. I grew up watching boxing and also have been watching mma since ufc 1. Floyd has never fought anyone. He has outboxed everyone. Even the greatest pure boxer’s of all time have had great fights. Floyd never has, and he is to much of a pussy to ever fight anyone. Even Sugar Ray Leonard who is considered one of the best boxer’s came forward and fought hearns and duran.
by Drew on Jul 24, 2009 12:09 PM EDT reply actions
why not just set up a kickboxing match? this way floyd dont have to worry about ground training and only has to learn kicks. even in that fite id take torres to kick mayweathers annoying @$$
by bobby o'shea on Jul 24, 2009 12:12 PM EDT reply actions
There is no up side for Floyd to take that fight. He is considered as one of the best boxers of all time at his weight. Why risk getting injured in a exhibition bout where he would probably make less money then he normally makes anyway. It also does nothing from Torres either. If he wins he beat a boxer, and god forbid he gets caught on the chin and loses. Its a no win fight for anyone.
by JJKID on Jul 24, 2009 12:12 PM EDT reply actions
Unless Floyd has a great exciting fight that he wins by ko he will never be considered one of the greatest of all time. He will always just be an after thought. The boxing writers will mention De la hoya, Duran, Hagler, Leonard, Robinson, Hearns all ahead of floyd. I know floyd beat a past his prime De la hoya, and thats exactly what merchant, lampley, burt sugar, and kellerman will all say long after floyd when everyone is looking back at the greats, Floyd will at best be an honorable mention unless he ends his career with some great fights, he hasn’t had any yet.

And the Tyson PPVs back in the day when I was a teenager … the 80s Tyson was an absolute murderer. He could have hung with and probably beaten any other HW from any other era (yes, I’m including Ali). He wasn’t just a brawler, he had amazing boxing skills and speed. Well, if Mayweather’s hands are half as brittle as a lot of people think they are, he’d probably smash them to bits if he actually tried to punch for power in MMA gloves.

I don’t follow boxing at all so I can’t really weigh in on Mayweather’s skills, etc. However, being a huge MMA fan and reading Mayweather’s verbal diarrhea I’d love to see him get kicked in the head. I know boxers are bigger PPV draws at this point but everytime I hear a boxer attack MMA I can’t help but believe they are threatened by MMA’s huge popularity gains. Otherwise there would be no reason for them to even comment on it IMO.

“Im not a white person, and i will smash his ass.” That is some racist shit if i ever heard it. What the hell does that comment have to do with anything. I would love to see them fight, and then hit each other so hard that they turn into retards. Which by the way is not to far off from where they are now. Somebody needs to check his greencard. Fucking beaner.

LOL. He said it because Gayweather said that MMA was a white man’s sport since they couldn’t compete in boxing. That was a funny post however.

Rydog255 your are bumb shit. Watch Mayweather’s video from last week.

I stand corrected Pings, but its dumb shit not bumb shit. Proobably should spell an insult correctly, especially one questioning my intelligence. I guess fuck Mayweather then for making such a racist statement. He wants no part of MMA. He will never step in there because the first grappler he meets will tear him up. Hell a good kickboxer will give him problems.

i don’t give a shit what anyone says, or what their argument might be……If Mayweather met up with Torres in the Octagon, Torres would mop the floor with him. Mayweather wouldn’t get past the first round. Sure, Mayweather would win if they fought in a boxing match, but Torrez could likely go the distance, if not at least 8 or 9 rounds. He’d last a lot longer in the ring than Mayweather would last in the Octagon. I’d love to see him kick the shit out of Mayweather, i can’t stand that cocky bastard.

Thank you Miguel Torres. He is definitely my favorite fighter. Low Money Mayweather needs to come out of retirement because he spends all of his money too fast. Can’t wait till he’s 40 and filing bankruptcy.
