Hello, Mr. Atencio? I have Jeff Monson on line two...

"I’m the guy to beat Fedor. He’s a great fighter. It’s a perfect match-up. He’s the guy I’m destined to fight. I want to be the guy to beat him. I’d definitely love to be carried off afterward…after I submit him. My goal is to be the best in the world, even if it’s for one fight."

-- Cocky and stocky submission specialist Jeff Monson tells Five Ounces of Pain that he's available for work on August 1 should the promotion happen to need a last-minute replacement for Josh Barnett against Fedor Emelianenko. "The Snowman" is notorious for fighting at will and wouldn't mind a little Soviet-flavored tune-up before his titanic tilt with Pedro Rizzo at Biletti Combat on September 12. Does the self-described anarchist have the grappling goods to topple the Russian Rancor? More importantly, would anyone pay to see it?

why not monson is a great fighter. He is a adcc champion and a ufc title contender. There are maybe 3 people on the planet that have better ground skills than fedor and he is one of them.

by lee maury on Jul 23, 2009 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I would never describe Monson as being “great”. He was a UFC contender during the leanest period in the history of the UFC HW division, and he lost to Timaaaaaay in an absolute borefest. Nuff said!

by attakdog on Jul 23, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Not only that, he was getting handled on the ground by Tim Sylvia… how do you live that down? Tim was tryin to put a triangle on him, a north south choke, all that sh!t, I was like “WTF is going on here?!?!?” during that one.

by O damn he got caught on Jul 23, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

dont forget he just recetly submitted kharitonov, who in my opinion is a way tougher fighter than tim sylvia

by brendan on Jul 23, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

That was just comical! Tim’s legs were just so long and Monson’s arms so short he couldn’t get near Timaaaaay to execute anything resembling a ground game. Horrible, horrible match!

by attakdog on Jul 23, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Kharitonov’s over-rated, fights every 18 months and only in Japan. Need I say more?

by attakdog on Jul 23, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

If we’re going to throw Fedor in there with a grappling expert I’d much perfer Werdum than Monson. At least Werdum attempts to stand and I think he has better subs as well. However, I don’t think I’d want to see that fight either. Right now the fights I would be most interested in (not saying much) are either Rogers or Vitor. Not that any of them would beat Fedor, but there’s some intrigue surrounding either of those fights. I still don’t understand why Lashly would tur the fight down. Eventhough I don’t think he would have a shot at winning, if he has some success (like AA, Kevin Randelman, and Hong Man Choi did briefly) it will propell his career and with Lashly’s size and wrestling I don’t think that’s totally out of the question. And it’s not like losing to Fedor on 10 days notice would send his career back too far. Bottom line is when an oppertunity arrises to fight the top guy in the world you take it if your a competitor. He had nothing to lose and everything to gain and Lashly let the oppertunity go by the wayside. Not that I’m upset it’s not happening, I just don’t understand it.

Ill take this fight. I want to see Belfort vs Santiago still…

by Crackbaby on Jul 23, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Well he’s probably worried about getting KTFO in the 1st rd like Tim and AA; look what happened to both of them, they go to their next fight and get KO’d again in the first seconds of the fight. Fedor beating guys so bad they just don’t recover lately..

Just wiki’ed Jeff out of curiosity (and I’m bored at work), had no idea he has his Master’s Degree in psychology.

Also found out the back story to his nickname, think that’s pretty funny.

by WB on Jul 23, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Hate to break it to you guys, but we can all but forget about Werdum. Strikeforce has a show around the corner, and with Alistar out, he is their best heavyweight. I would LOVE to see Werdum/Fedor, but thats just because I am one of the few people that see how much potential Werdum has….but its not going to happen at Affliction 3.

I doubt they will lend Rogers out to affliction either because I am expecting to see Werdum/Rogers next month.

Instead of blaming Fedor, and complaining about him fighting a middleweight. I prefer to enjoy and appreciate Affliction, with its limited resources, getting a good replacement fight like Vitor vs. Fedor on such short notice!

by JOhn G on Jul 23, 2009 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

yes Monson would be a worthy opponent for Fedor, but after watching three Nogueira vs. Fedor fights, I have come to the conclusion that Fedor is impervious to submissions anyway…so whats really the point of Fedor fighting MOnson?

by JOhn G on Jul 23, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

What’s the origin of his nickname WB, did he steal it from Chuck Liddell when his back was turned?

attakdog – from wiki
“He is nicknamed “The Snowman” for his performance at the 1999 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championship. The Brazilian fighters at the tournament gave him the nickname because he came in as an unknown, but beat four Brazilians in a row to win the 88-98 kilogram weight class. As he went along in the tournament and continued to beat his opponents, they said he was like a snowball (white, compact, rolling and getting bigger and stronger as the tournament went on)."

by Smity on Jul 23, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It was Tim Sylvia that made that fight as bad as it was. Monson did all he could with his size and reach disadvantage but it wasn’t happening, ther wasn’t that much more he could do. I actually felt sorry for him. Tim Sylvia was his usual fighting for a descision self. There is no disputing Monsons ground game.

A think its the best possible matchup for Fedor. He’s on a winning streak having won his last seven fights which makes him credible and he’s a season veteran which makes him more credible. Plus, he’s an actual heavyweight which goes a long way in a heavyweight fight.

I’d rather see Monson fight than Belfort (middleweight) or Rodgers (way too green). Plus I think he has the best chance of dethroning the emperor of the possible contestants.

Also, that is one of my favorite pictures of all time.

by DDT on Jul 23, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

his seven fights were not against top competition wich means he’s wouldnt be number, Fedor himself should’nt be concidered number one.

Hmm…well if I am Tom Tshirt-cio and Belfort demands half-a-mill and Snowman says he’ll do it for a bag of chips and access to a few hookers, I’m going with Snowman. Of course, then he’ll get popped for steriods 3 days out and we are back to…Belfort

by Brent on Jul 23, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

THURSDAY MORNING THOUGHT!
alright guys, it’s been a rough week for me (car impounded and worked 15 hours OT in 4 days), but now I’ll weigh in on the Barnett mess:
Josh Barnett may have single handedly ruined affliction. I personally thought this may be there last show, but now it looks to be definite! Many people (definitely not me) saw Barnett as a legit threat to Fedor. He his a legit top 5 HW! Now there are few options, and I’ll break them down THE WAY I SEE THEM!
Fedor vs. Vitor Belfort: I’ve been a Vitor fan before many of you were even watching mma, and he had huge expectations back in the day! He looked impressive his last fight out and is going to be a force at MW after this event in the UFC and is gunning for Anderson Silva! This match is a lose/lose for affliction! Fedor wins, who cares, he beat a middle weight who hasn’t been the same since his sisters fiasco, who took the fight on 10 days notice. Vitor wins, affliction dies!
Brett Rogers: This is the only fight that makes sense! He isn’t ready for Fedor yet, but what better hype than the guy who just destroyed AA! OK, here’s where it gets crazy, it’s a no win if Fedor wins, he’s expected to. If Brett Rogers can pull off the impossible, Affliction will reign supreme! He has the punching power in both hands and seems to have a good chin! It would set up an instant rematch and the buzz would trickle down to even the casual fan.
Lastly, anyon who even mentioned Bobby Lashley…please go shoot yourself in the stomach, bleed out a slow death and get out of here! Philqny has a better shot against Fedor than Bobby Lashley!

by kevin on Jul 23, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Kev: If Brett wins Strikeforce wins, affliction still die because the PPV numbers will be terrible!!

by MoonUk on Jul 23, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s got a point kev! that’s why Lashley’s being considered coz they’ve seen the crazy numbers having a pro wrestler in your main events can generate.

by attakdog on Jul 23, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Could be MoonUK. Average fans who have showtime, know who Rogers is… and he KO’d a former UFC champ, who the average fan knows! I think as far as ppv numbers go, this will have no affect! Fedor and Barnett are not main stream names to anyone beside us hardcore fans!

by kevin on Jul 23, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

attackdog, if that was the case (in my opinion), Lashley would have fought on a strikeforce or affliction card by now! If not for PPV buys alone, yet no one is touching him! He’s no Brock Lesner. He’s really not that good (yet) and I thin everyone has taken notice of that!

by kevin on Jul 23, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Rogers should have taken the fight, and for a helluva lot less than 800K. For that much he should have been all over it. I know he probably wants to pad his record a bit more, but the chances are he’ll lose to Werdum next month anyway, and his weak skills will be exposed and his mystique will be gone.

Losing to Fedor would have done very little to harm his stature in MMA right now, and if he fluked out and somehow won he would be on top of the world. He’d also gain the invaluable experience of learning firsthand what it’s like to fight the best. Horrible decision by Rogers, if indeed it was his decision to make. His fifteen minutes will be over soon anyway, he should have made the most of it by seizing this opportunity.

How is Rogers vs Fedor even considered competitive? I’m convinced that fight would end within seconds of it hitting the ground. Vera-Mir was the first and last time that Brandon impressed me, since then he has gotten too big for his boots and has become another unfulfilled prospect, he looked good in his last fight against a can but has a lot to do to prove that he is a star in the making.

Sylvia is a boring fighter but so is Monson, put them together in a title fight and you have the worst possible MMA match. Awful, awful fight, both of them are as bad as each other.

I would pay to see it, but let’s root for quantity pricing now that the quality has flown out the window.

by Crackbaby on Jul 23, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Sylvia-Monson was the most boring fight that I have ever seen and it made me dislike both of them. Monson is just a troublemaker out of the ring and boring to watch inside, if he is put in the main event then people will be demanding refunds. Fedor is a much better all round fighter and would beat him easily.

by David W-S on Jul 23, 2009 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

Right on! Monson couldn’t do anything with Tim Sylvia. Fedor would win this hands down.

by ducknow on Jul 23, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

This would be the same Tim Sylvia who beat Arlovski twice. The same Arlovski who was doing quite well against Fedor until he got knocked out.
It was was quite clear that the size and reach advantage made that fight what it was, that would not be the case with Fedor. I am not sayng he would win, but it would be a completely different fight. People seem to be conveniently forgetting that Arlovski lost twice to Sylvia.

by Ade on Jul 23, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

So that would make Ray Mercer the undisputed HW number one, based on the fact that he beat TIm Sylvia (who beat AA twice) in 9 seconds, a whole 20 seconds faster than Fedor managed????

I do not no if that was a response to me attakdog, as I belive we cam to a mutual understanding, but that is the point I was trying to make. MMA math doesn’t work, so saying Monson couldn’t do anything to Sylvia, doesn’t mean that he couldn’t do anything to Fedor. Arlovski lost twice to Sylvia but did pretty well against Fedor until he got knocked out. As ususal you did not understand my point, I am sure ducknow did. As mentioned before if you would kindly not respond to my posts, because it does get tiresome having to put break it down again seperately for you each time.

by attakdog on Jul 23, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

lol i would fight fedor for less than half of that, tim was i mean “was” not is, a more accomplished fighter than rogers is at this point, but i still feel like its to much if he would have asked for half of that he might have got the fight, and had nothing to lose, if he won he beat “the greatest HW” if he lost well he lost to Fedor cant hold that against him

by DantheMan on Jul 23, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

If Affliction hadn’t have paid Sylvia such silly money for a 36s fight then they’d be in a much better bargaining position. Sure Rogers should really take half that and still would end up in his highest profile fight to date as well as being a cheaper option for Affliction than Barnett but I can see why he is asking for more money. At least Vitor has agreed to the fight so Fedor has an opponent ready if Rogers doesn’t agree to it.

Realistically Affliction was never going to be a long-term promotion because they spent too much too soon so the MMA promotion is not financially viable to the parent company. Barnett’s actions have killed any hope of them recovering from their early mistakes and the fans and the fighters have lost out on some great fights and competiton because of this, the only winners are Zuffa.

by David W-S on Jul 23, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

This picture is probably going to be more exciting the fight will be. Fedor always creams wrestlers and I believe he will do the same here.

This is MMA and anything can happen. Theoretically, Monson can beat Fedor BUT IF THEY FOUGT 100 TIMES I have Fedor winning 99 matches and Monson 1.

Monson is a short stalky wrestler but his hands aren’t great. I much prefer Brett Rogers because he’s the closest outside the UFC right now that is a BIG HEAVY handed heavyweight which poses the biggest threat to Fedor. If Fedor wants to fight Brock he needs to prepare himself wih a big strong guy.

I just lost respect for Barnett because he really ruined a good night for MMA fans. If your injured than that’s part of training and there is nothing you can do about it BUT IF YOUR SHOOTING STEROIDS than you just pathetic. Plus, this isn’t his first time. Barnett was stripped from his bealt along time ago when he used to fight in the UFC from using steroids so this isn’t his first time.

Thank god I didn’t buy tix for this and sorry for those who did.

Fedor and affliction are not scared of Rogers. Rogers is not scared of fedor. Its strikeforce that isn’t allowing Rogers to fight fedor. I also would love to see monson rather then vitor. Leave vitor on the card for Santiago so there’s More to watch. I want Rogers but since its unlikely I want monson. Don’t care bout sylvia beating him. That’s happened to other ufc fighters n it didn’t end there careers. Whatever. I want a big man in there. Not vitor who will weigh 215 max and cost 2 fights fucked that night.

Now it dosent really matter who they get, as long a fedor wins and wins in convincing fashion. The way everyone is talking about this fight now no matter who fedor fights and how he wins he will not get any credit for it. Fedor is in an absoulute lose lose situation unless the impossible happens and Dana puts one of his fighters on loan to affliction. But if that happens the co main event will probably be a three way ladder match with Dana, Atencio, and Hackelman.

I will orver affliction no matter what because I like to see fedor fight and lets be realistic…59.99 is nothing!!! Ill spend that doing somthing stupid anyway..

by What? on Jul 23, 2009 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

Affliction , make this happen. I would love to see Fedor v Monson .. well not love, but I would still buy the PPV :) .. and I want to see Vitor in his current match up, not against Fedor.

This was supposed to be the Bodog headline fight a few years back, but Monson was injured or something and thus Stinky was named to fight Fedor.

Petruzelli…..?

Can he do it again? <-(joke)

by Alien Q on Jul 23, 2009 1:47 PM EDT reply actions

hahahaha. what a joke. monson is crap.

by lefthook187 on Jul 23, 2009 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

Why is everyone using MMA math on this? I’ve just read about 20 comments saying, ‘Tim-meh messed up Monson, imagine what Fedor would do!!’ Monson is a short guy with T-rex arms, his worst fight imaginable would be against a fighter the size of Sylvia. I like the Fedor/Monson match up more than any other last minute option they have.

by Matt on Jul 23, 2009 2:04 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe Tom Atencio should call up Seth Petruzelli. I’m sure he would take the fight.

interesting match up IMO def gonna turn into a grappling match unless fedor scores a KO. dont get me wrong, monson is a sick grappler but he’s really gonna have to pull a rabbit out of his ass to hang with fedor on the ground. regardless of whoever replaces barnett and regardless of whoever wins, its a lose/lose situation for affliction. they barely had enough money to put a 3rd event together and now the headliner, the only fight that probably 80% of the people buying this ppv even gave a shit about is ruined. and as for all the replacements being considered, if fedors wins, BFD cuz he’s supposed to anyway, (especially against belfort cuz u know if that happens every fedor-hater is gonna drone on and on about vitor being a MW etc..) but if he loses, he’s no longer the #1 HW in the world, therefore affliction loses its posterboy and its only leverage to stick around and become a successful mma organization. dana must be happy as a pig in shit rite now.

I say Affliction gets Dan the Beast Severn and make it a USA vs Russia thing!

by MMAFAN204 on Jul 23, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Does anyone else think it’s ironic that Barnett is nailed for cheating(juicing) When he cried foul so hard against “cyborg” when she didn’t make wait and then whooped up on his female fighter?

by Bucho on Jul 23, 2009 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

“weight”

Is Antonio “Junior” / “bigfoot” Silva available to fight in the US again?

by MMAFAN204 on Jul 23, 2009 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

Just watched the Fedor/Arona fight. You can make a very good case that Fedor lost that fight. I don’t think it’s safe to say that Fedor always dominates wrestlers. He can be taken down, it’s just nearly impossible to submit him.

Monson would be a pretty easy W for Fedor, but not the worst choice on short notice to fight him. He’s got some legit credentials— a proven decent fighter. Exciting? No. Legit. Sure.

Obviously, Belfort or Rogers would get more hype, but Rogers would get embarrassed quickly and Belfort doesn’t need to derail the momentum he’s got going right now. At least Monson is a HW.

Mania just keep calling and let us kno asap. I’m tired of a new article for us to put 300 comments on the exact same thing about. Affliction has got to be close now. I mean its not like they have much time. And I’m definitely starting 2 think its not VITOR or that would have been wrapped up n announced by tom by now. So here’s hoping to:
1. Brett Rogers
2. Jeff Monson
3. Vitor Belfort*
*if necessary

Didn’t Tim Sylvia own his ass? Enough said – put him in there, let him get rocked and ship Fedor to the NFL of MMA

by DF on Jul 23, 2009 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

paul buentello would be a good match up, he looked good in his last fight against that kid the announcer’s were calling “fedor’s prodigy”

He deffinetly does have the grappling goods. I just hope size isn’t too much of an issue.

by xxBAxx816 on Jul 23, 2009 4:17 PM EDT reply actions

i think Monson would be better than Belfort. having Fedor fight Belfort is a lose-lose. either Fedor wins like he should and he beats up a smaller guy or he loses and it makes him look bad. so i say Fedor vs Monson is perfect.

At the last Pride Event, I think it was Randleman who said to the effect of…If you want to go to the bathroom go during Monson fight because he will still be in the same damn position when you get back.
