Report: Josh Barnett tests 'positive;' Fedor Emelianenko fight at Affliction 3 in jeopardy (Updated)

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Josh Barnett submitted a "positive test" prior to his much anticipated title fight against Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction: "Trilogy" from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Aug. 1, according to Sherdog.com.
***UPDATE: Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio has confirmed with MMA Fanhouse that the August 1 main event between Fedor Emelianenko and Josh Barnett has been canceled.
Here's a snip:
"(Barnett) tested positive for a banned substance. The athletic commission will not reinstate his license. Him and Fedor is off."
Middleweight Vitor Belfort, a former light heavyweight who is already booked to fight Jorge Santiago in a 185-pound contest on the same night, has reportedly agreed to step in if needed; however, Atencio refused to comment on that possible scenario, as well as a potential call up for Bobby Lashley.
The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) will apparently issue a "comprehensive statement" on its findings later today.

If Vitor steps up it basically ruins 2 solid main card fights with Santiago having no opponent. I don’t think taking this fight is a wise move for Vitor…he’s too small and won’t have time to put on enough weight to really be able to compete with Fedor. Plus Vitor has already built up some decent momentum since dropping to 185 and a loss might deter that a little.
There really isn’t much left. You can’t blame Lashley for turning down a fight with the P4P best on a week’s notice or anyone else for that matter. The only option that makes any sense that has been talked about is Werdum…but that doesn’t really excite me.
This could be a pretty big blow to Affliction…the show is coming apart at the seems a week away from the event. Things couldn’t get much worse than they are now.

What about an AA rematch? Bet he’d take it, he is at a loss to nothing and was doing well until he got KTFO.
Would prefer any legit H/W rather than an overmatched M/W. Grim? Werdum?

WOW!!!!!!! I checked to see if there was any “big news” before beginning the work day and I have to read this?????
Barnett’s 2 biggest fights of his life – Beating Couture to win the UFC HW championship and fighting the greatest fighter alive, Fedor. What does he do? He roids up both times. What a floppy love handle of a joke he has become. Most everyone (not I) touts him as the clear cut #2 HW. I have never really accepted it though, and to be quite honest, I see Brock Lesnar pounding him out if they were to ever fight.
Affliction 3 is now ruined, as is my Fedor/Leites/Cyborg parlay. I had every dollar in my account (except for 5) bet on that parlay. Fedor not fighting Barnett will diminish my returns but he was the largest favorite. IF anyone else had a parlay with Fedor in it already, the rest of the fights in the parlay will stand as will your bet – your risk amount stays the same, but if you win, you get back less than it said you would (because there was 1 fight less in your parlay).
I was going to parlay Fedor with Moussasi once the event got closer hoping that some money would come in on Babalu.
F*CK YOU BARNETT YOU FAT, SLOW DOUGHBOY!

Actually the gay community has already taken a liking to Affliction shirst. I see them walking around with them on all the time but when I ask who they have picked for the HW bout they have no clue what I’m talking about. Ironic. Anyway niether Vitor nor Lashley are suitable opponents for Fedor and would be a huge joke imo. Also AA is not going to take this fight seeing as how he’s been KO’d twice recently, he doesn’t need that to show again. Why not Brett Rogers? I think that would be a good replacement and would save the show. Is he available?

I don’t think he’s cleared to fight, he just got KO’d in two straight fights, 2 1st rd knock outs. I think they tend to watch those fighters a little more closely and bench them for longer periods of time to make sure they’re ok.

Affliction needs Fedor to fight or no one will buy the PPV. They will find someone to fight him and its going to be a disaster becasue there are no quality apponents for him. Vitor is awsome, but undersized just like Lindland was. He will get bullied and beat up. Lashley, thats a joke. I hope for some stupid reason they choose Lashley and he actually wins, that would sink Affliction faster that the Titanic. I don’t seee that happening becasue its a lose lose situation for Affliction and Fedor either way. This is it, Fedor is done with Affliction after this, they will die. Fedor will take some time off and eventually fight in the UFC, hopefully. He will lose in the UFC also. The cage can’t be used like a ring and he will get smashed becasue he’s to small. Looks like a big guy, but is a very small heavyweight, 230 maybe, on a good day. I hate to say it but, Brock + 60 pounds of muscle = win.

Brett Rogers makes the most sense. His fight was very short and he took no damage, and if he wins, you have a relative no name you can build up however you want to, I mean, you would have in contract the man who beat fedor…if he loses, then you’re still on with whatever game plan you already had.

by Blazy J on Jul 22, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions
i’m far from a fedor fan, but lashley would get killed, lashley needs to stick with pro wrestling, he sucked there too but atleast he can be scripted a win/championship. As for in mma he is going to go nowhere he is not impressive
by Jermyjackson on Jul 22, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions
Grimm is a StrikeForce fighter, and with Overeem off their card (again) I see it much more likely that Grimm would fill in to fight Werdum. If this is the case, I say strip Overeem of his title, because he has yet to defend it. This would also give Grimm a little more time to train as opposed to fighting Fedor.
As for Lashley, as crazy as it sounds, it may make sense for all parties. Affliction needs Fedor to fight a name so they can still sell PPV’s. Brock has shown that he can swing over some WWE fans, so who’s to say Lashley can’t? Would Lashley lose? 99.9999% of the time – YES. But that doesn’t even matter. He would gain unfathomable experience win or lose. Losing to Fedor does not discredit you as a fighter. Imagine if he lasts past the first round with Fedor, that is a moral victory for Lashley. Brock fought Mir in his 2nd MMA fight and lost and it sure didnt seem to hurt his career.
In addition, Lashley has been considering going back to wrestling. The main reason I would think he would consider that is for the money. With Barnett out and Fedor is dire need of an opponent and Affliction is even more desperate for PPV buys. I am sure that they would be willing to throw a very fair share of money at Lashley to take this fight if that is the opponent they choose.
by ViolentMike on Jul 22, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions
I completely agree. I was calling this but in the UFC. Never saw it in Affliction. It does make sense though. Its win-win for Lashley. He either catches Fedor with a 20 lb hand and gets lucky or he gets beat up. Either way he has already done more than Brock. Brock just beat an old man and a dick!

Yeah guys, if the dude posting under my name is borderline illiterate and is talking shit about Fedor … you know it ain’t JJ™. Thanks for fighting the good fight, though. We’ll clean this place up one tard at a time boys!
One thing I’ve noticed on this site is that the Fedor-haters all appear to be well under the age of 18 – and have nothing of consequence to contribute to any non Fedor/Brock thread.
As for this awful, awful news … damn you Barnett. Were you scared? What the hell are you doing? This seriously sucks. Vitor? Lashley? Please.

Two things.
1st: I thought Vitor wanted to strictly fight at 185 now and that’s why he turned Moussasi down.
2nd: I thought if a fighter tests positive, he gets suspended after the event? I’ve never seen someone get suspended a week or 2 before the event.

This is only good for the sport of MMA. The time has come for Fedor to have to fight the best in the world. Fighting people that have left the UFC after losses or other negative reasons only leaves doubts. He has truly been dominant with his opponents, but what caliber are these opponents. AA not impressive at any time, sorry just my opinion. Timmy… are you kidding me, first of all he was boring to watch, second he was so one dimensional it was scary. As of late who has he fought?
I do believe he is the best in the world, but I think it is time he starts proving it against other that are closer to his game.

MAC, Dana should get Affliction to sign a non-complete contract, stating this is their LAST EVENT and help them out. MMA fans looked forward to good fights on Aug 1st and if Dana and Co. cared about us at all he should help. Make Tom and Co. agree to split after this than lend them a fighter. Affliction could go back to sponsoring fighters and they could beef up this card a little more. Why not? Fedor would be under the UFC banner as a cross promotion fight. Let him rip a new one in someone like Gonzaga. They would make Fedor sign a UFC contract before the fight and he would be stuck coming over after this fight. The UFC can help Affliction and Fans all at the same time. Or they can sit back and watch this mess and laugh. Cross promo with SF isn’t a bad fix either.

that’s what I was going to say spooner, I did read a quote from Soares that said if he were to ever have the oppurtunity to fight fedor, he would like to be at 220.
by James S on Jul 22, 2009 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Gonzaga and Kongo? How would an overrated mental midget and the most one dimensional UFC HW have a hope at beating Fedor. Carwin, Cain and Lesnar all have the potential to be great HWs but have a lot left to prove. As for Anderson Silva, that would be a dream fight but Fedor would be too big for him.
I say give Fedor Lashley or Grim, depending on what SF are doing now that Overreem-Werdum is cancelled. Grim is the real deal and after he destroyed AA on Showtime would be both a dangerous and a marketable opponent for Fedor, as they are both coming off KO wins over AA. After the Overreem debacle, he will be looking for a big fight so unless he replaces Alistair he’ll be a likely candidate to take this on short notice.
Lashley is a big name from his WWE days and this would be a great test to see what a Fedor-Lesnar fight could look like. Whilst Lashley would be a huge underdog given his inexperience and lack of time to prepare, so if he wants to remain unbeaten then it’s a mistake but if he wants to win a lot of new fans for taking this fight in the first place, make a lot of money and gain invaluable experience from fighting the best, this is the perfect fight for him.
Full credit to Vitor for offering to step up but he is too small and at this point I’d rather watch him fight at 185. There is no point ruining Affliction’s second biggest fight of the show by putting on a freakshow HW v MW main event, I’d rather watch him destroy Santiago before returning to the UFC.
As for Barnett, he is an idiot and a proven cheater who has killed off the biggest HW fight of all time and may have killed the UFC’s biggest competition. The guy is talented but an absolute moron who should be banned from the sport, testing positive for steroids 2 times, both times during the two biggest fights of his career. I have no desire to watch that idiot fight ever again.
Saying all of this, I have a funny feeling that Fedor is going to get upset now. This whole mess is the weirdest thing to happen in MMA since the Kimbo/Ken/Seth debacle and I have a nagging feeling that Fedor is going to get caught.

What a damn shame. The way I see it is if Belfort steps in, he will recieve mad props from Affliction(RIP), and also the UFC, even with a loss. Stepping up on a long shot, and on very short notice is not frowned upon, and is definately noticed. True fighter spirit. And with an upset win over Fedor, Belfort’s stock will rise 10 fold. I think it’s a win/win for Belfort. Take the fight. He may be smaller, but he’s a heck of a lot better fighter than Lashley, or the like.
by GodDamnMike on Jul 22, 2009 10:30 AM EDT reply actions
I agree win/win for Belfort but lose/lose for Affliction and Fedor. If Fedor wins no surprises cuz Vitor’s a middleweight. If he loses, there goes the mystique of the all powerful, king of the universe, sun shines out his ass Fedor.

We all seem so chuffed that Affliction could be on their way out?!?!? Why should we be happy? not only does it mean less MMA, but less competition for UFC. All great businesses (which the UFC is) need competition and with Affliction going down it allows UFC to be more of a dictator to the sport. Competition helps you keep focused and increases your own level of performance.
Plus Affliction have put on some good fights, with quality fighters. Not all the smaller organisations will be able to attract this. Meaning alot of good fighters without possible fights.
What i worry for is i can see UFC using Bisping as a headliner on every English card. Dam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love how anytime an athlete gets busted for drugs, they claim they’ve been wrongly accused and that they’ll prove their innocence. Of course, it never happens and many of them later admit to taking a shortcut or whatever other excuse they use.
by Nigel Tufnel on Jul 22, 2009 10:57 AM EDT reply actions
What a massive dissapointment. Barnett has not only ruined his chance of beating Fedor, he’s potentially ruined the entire card too. Anybody that thinks they can get away with taking drugs these days is a total idiot. As for a new opponent, Lashley is too new to face Fedor, lets see Brett Rogers instead.

I would love to see rogers vs fedor probably the most interesting fight for Fedor outside the UFC right now. I think Fedor will win but i love to root for the underdog.

i like belfort but hes to small to get fedor.only guy whos going to beat fedor right now is going to be a true heavyweight.barnett is a real bonehead.he just put the nail in afflictions coffin, which is their own fault for having 2 good fighters, its to bad,not enough fights out there.no,i cant spell and no i dont care

Once a cheat, always a cheat!! Barnett is a douche!
by Jay on Jul 22, 2009 11:05 AM EDT reply actions
yea he ruined the card,he also just put the last nail in afflictions coffin.they should have more than two good fighters anyway.vitor doesnt have a chance,to small
by hddavidson on Jul 22, 2009 11:07 AM EDT reply actions
There isn’t a heavyweight in the world that has a realistic chance at beating Fedor with 1 week of training/notice. I think Brock WOULD beat Fedor, if he trained like he did for his last fight.
Honestly, I didn’t care to see this fight anyway. Barnett is pretty worthless, before this situation. Bye bye Affliction. It was mildly entertaining while it lasted.
by Miketsi on Jul 22, 2009 11:08 AM EDT reply actions
Make Barnett fight overeem. Have roid user vs mr.“I won the belt now I’m never defending it”. Hurt his hand in a bar fight? Make em fight. They’re embarrassing. Almost as bad as strikeforce for not taking that belt from Cung Le forever ago while he is busy thinking he is Jackie Chan

Affliction MMA is done. Thousands upon thousands of $ were spent on advertising and promotion and that has just been tossed in the garbage. Not to mention the sponsorship $ that were put forward to promote the biggest draw in Affliction. There is no possible way they can afford to NOT have Fedor fight someone.

by punchin bag on Jul 22, 2009 11:21 AM EDT reply actions
Ben Rothwell, gilbert Yvel, Werdum, Brett Rogers, or Bobby Lashley.
If affliction really wants to make up for the Barrnett loss and still make money I think Brett Rogers or Bobby lashley are their best options.
I can’t imagine those two will be very easy to make happen. It’s Crash and burn time for Affliction

Thanks for the link, Rogers is by far the fav. I was always d/l this one anyway and dont consider Barnett a top fighter so no big deal for me.

This is why weak promotions with weak divisions can’t compete!! Dana will be sitting there saying told Ya so!! And he’d be right, if this happened in the ufc there would be loads of options, however affliction have to go 2 weight divisions down…..what a joke!!
Why would Dana help them?? Fedoris all but guaranteed to be a ufc fighter within the year, either way affliction is done. They will lose a fortune on this!!!
by Mo on Jul 22, 2009 11:35 AM EDT reply actions
They don’t call him the baby steroid face for nothing. That’s why he got kicked out of the UFC, steroids, after beating Randy Couture.
by Jeff on Jul 22, 2009 11:37 AM EDT reply actions
barnett was going to get ko’ed or armbarred anyway… i think this is a better card if somehow they throw money at either rogers or get lashley to accept the fight… scraping the belfort santiago fight hurts the card but he a chance against the last emperor… what if they got someone from japan like fujita?? hes got a fight for sengoku that next day.. or semmy schilt… long shot but maybe? i would think they are exploring every option… and also RIP Affliction… fedor to japan….

I think this is payback for that annoying ad they put on here, that popped up and started talking if you scrolled over it.

conspiracy theory number 392: dana pays barnett to fail his drug test and kimbo to take the fall against seth! not really but its working out pretty well for the ufc. dana must be laughing his ass off. fedor vs werdum or rogers anyone? arlovski is out with 2 recent ko’s. i really dont want to see vitor in there, but im sure he’d put on a good show.
by COR on Jul 22, 2009 11:43 AM EDT reply actions
Blah blah. If tom puts grim or yvel or lashley in there ill be more interested then Barnett anyways so I don’t care. If not then I don’t have to sneak out of my buddies wedding to the closest bar to watch this lol. Barnett isn’t #2 hw in the world anyways. He just appeared there when he was announced to fight fedor.
by Daniel worby on Jul 22, 2009 11:49 AM EDT reply actions
Affliction is screwed, they might as well just start filing for bankruptcy.
by kibbled_bits on Jul 22, 2009 12:01 PM EDT reply actions
Biggest winner here- Dana White
Sign Fedor now, and have a Dec UFC, Fedor vs. Brock!!!
Maybe call up Brett Rogers? Buentello is fighting on the same card.. What a huge opportunity for the next HW in line to be called up.

This is why these cr ap orgs are terrible. They have no one to step in.
God for bid it is belfort. He is training for 185 now he will step up and fight Fedor, cmon! He is lights out the first real shot he takes.
Thus eliminating a very interesting fight that Belfort is already set to do.
So two fights are off.
Well we shall see how well these other orgs are willing to co promote like they all say they will and the UFC wont.
Werdum Vs Fedor!! I say strikeforce says no way! Maybe for some serious cash they go for it.
We have never seen other orgs real stars fight other orgs top stars.
We did see Elite guys fight Elite guys on a strikeforce show,
by badguy on Jul 22, 2009 12:07 PM EDT reply actions
LOL, Barrett screwed Affliction so badly. This was probably a fight that would’ve saved Affliction. Oh well, wouldn’t mind seeing Bobby Lashley vs Fedor, like another Kimbo vs Seth match. LOL.

Barnett has always talked so much sh it about the UFC and other fighters like he is god and what does he do.
He has looked pretty bad lately he must of figured he needed some help.
On a side note California sure does seem to have alot of this BS all the time. Kinda fishy really.
by badguy on Jul 22, 2009 12:17 PM EDT reply actions
Fedor is going to have to step up and fight for the ufc now. There are no fights for him anywhere else. Affliction has 3 or 4 good fighters left and their not long fot the mma world anymore. They should just stick to making t-shirts.
by Wes on Jul 22, 2009 12:19 PM EDT reply actions
Man I really hope this brings Fedor to the UFC. I would love to see him take out Brock and everyone who challenges him.

HA HA HA HA…i cant help but laugh. Oh dear oh dear. And that my friends, is the end of Affliction. Id of thought they’d of learnt the lesson of what happens when you base a fight promotion on the same 3 or 4 fighters.
OK, enough of the sillyness. Fedor, in UFC, now.

I was wondering if you guys could share some info about the protocol for testing for banned substances. Do they test urine, blood and/or both? How does the NSCA go about testing for banned substances.
I’m asking because a buddy of mine swears that nearly all fighters use banned substances, and don’t get caught because they know how to cycle off properly. In particular, he is certain that GSP is using something, e.g., winthol, because he can tell from GSP’s body structure.
Any insight, or links, would be helpful.
by ppihnileef on Jul 22, 2009 1:52 PM EDT reply actions
They check your urine. Some steroids that are oil based such as testosterone esthers and nandrolones can stay in your system for up to 1 year. Ther are other water based substances that can be out of your system in as shortly as 3-4 weeks but they are very toxic to the liver. They are also some of the steroids that produce some of the most serious side effects. I am a professioanl strength and conditioning coach at the collegiate level so I know how drug testing works. Now, Let me say with a large degree of certainty that your friend is so full of horse crap that his eyes are brown and he stinks if he thinks GSP is taking steroids. He does not resemble the typical user at all. Now it is possible that he uses HGH. There is no test to detect HGH at this time. HGH, however is extremely expensive; around $ 3000-4,000 for a 4-6 week cycle. Your average mma fighter can’t afford this. So I don’t believe many ufc fighters are “juiced”
by Wes on Jul 22, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions
WES your buddy is a knob. End of discussion. Anyone that says they can tell because of their body structure needs a slap in the head and I expect you to deliver it.
by jay on Jul 22, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions
By the way, there is no such drug as winthol, it’s winstrol and it’s actually a veterinary drug.

RIP Affliction, there is no other fight that a real MMA fan wants to see instead. There is no way affliction is going to survive this one. Well Fedor, i guess you and your team have to take your pride shove it and come and fight in the UFC a real MMA organization.

by Jason on Jul 22, 2009 2:44 PM EDT reply actions
I would like to see him come back to mma but let him learn his lesson as he probably already did. But he should be given random tests to see if he is worthy of a second chance.

Both Lashley and Rogers have said they don’t want to take the fight.
Personally I would like to see Werdum have a crack but if he better show up in better shape then he did against dos santos.
Problem is this fight is less then 10 days away. Unless you can find somebody who already is training to fight in the next 2 to 3 weeks, the will not be ready in time.
I was wondering about Jeff Monson, but I believe he fought last week so I don’t know if he would get clearance.
