The saddest thing about this is that some people on this board actually seem HAPPY that this has happened. They’re such corporate UFC sacklickers that they are actually CHEERING this huge fight being cancelled. Why? Because it might guarantee the untimely demise of one of the UFC’s competitors. Herds of mindless sheep. I wish Dana would ask you idiots to jump off a cliff, because lord knows you’d do it.
The fans have been robbed of one of the very biggest fights in HW history, possibly MMA history, and the sport has been robbed of a defining moment. I love the UFC and they are by far the premiere MMA promotion in the world. But other shows putting on mega-fights is GOOD for the sport. It makes the UFC pick up it’s game to stay ahead – and it guarantees that we, the fans, get to see more big fights! Why would any fan not want that! Yes, the UFC will always be the biggest dog in the yard, but there are too many good fighters for just one organization to use – and it’s nice to see events put on in different ways.
Anyone who is happy about this debacle makes me sick. Y’all should be ashamed of yourselves.

What they don’t realize is that all fighters cannot be in the UFC…if and probably when Affliction fails, there will be another org waiting to pop up…Can anyone remember Affliction’s first show? Does anyone want to sit through that again?? Not this guy…the longer Affliction, Dream, Strikeforce, and even Belator, are around the better it will be for all of us.

I will explain so as not to be flamed by the mighty JJ. When you have two or more major orgs doing the same thing, the talent pool gets watered down. UFC or anyone really needs to become number 1 with no contenders. Like baseball, hockey, football, most sports where the best at that vocation come to ply their trade. Now imagine for a second there was 3 NHL type leagues in hockey would the stanley cup be as exciting or mean as much? NO because there would always be a team that has a claim to number 1. Same as the MMA rankings work now, who can say who is number one at HW if the top HW’s never get to fight eachother? I’m not really in love with UFC or any org. really but I hate the attitude people have about this subject. Because the UFC won’t cross promote ever again, more than one MAJOR MMA organization might give us more fights, but it won’t give us better fights. Am I making sense to the HATERS yet?

JJ and Mac, well said I am amazed that people are happy about this news. How can anyone call themselves an MMA fan if they are happy that a huge HW fight between the best two fighters in that weight class has been cancelled a week before the PPV, that is disastrous news.
Jay, the UFC for numerous reasons can’t sign up every MMA fighter, so there has to be some competing organisations otherwise these guys wouldn’t be able to make a living in the sport. The UFC does not have the money, the time or the desire to have every MMAst employed, if they did then they wouldn’t be profitable unless the fighters were paid ridiuclously cheaply, they would fight less often and quality fighters would miss out on televised fights. Plus, with a president as temperamental as Dana White, there is always going to be badblood between him and other fighters. Without Affliction, Strikeforce or Dream, fighters like Fedor and Tito wouldn’t be able to continue fighting in this sport, so we would miss out on seeing quality, popular fighters in their prime because of petty squabbling. Also, there would be no smaller promotions for guys like Lashley and King Mo to improve before hitting the big time, so they would be thrown into the deep end and most likely lose and get cut before they had the chance to become great fighters. Whatever way you look at it, competition is good and unless you work for Zuffa then you should not be happy by this news.

Jay, I’m not going to flame anybody.
Your comparison to North American pro sports leagues is not a sound one. All the top fighters will never all be under one promotion, like they are in the NHL (although the Russian KHL league is beginning to poach good players). In theory one big org would let us find out who the very best fighters are, but it won’t work that way. There will always be high-level Japanese orgs like Pride and Dream around, because of that country’s love for MMA. That means they will always be able to sign a certain percentage of top talent. Also, Dana White has proven himself to be a bit of a megalomaniac, and if he has complete control of wordwide MMA (he basically already does have North American control) the fighters will get screwed even more than they are now. Dream and Affliction make him stay honest, at least to the point where guys can earn a dollar elsewhere if they don’t want to take his shit.
A better comparison would be european football, where each country has a premiere league of elite teams. Some leagues are better than others, but they all have top talent. You could never put all the world’s best players in one league, it would be impossible – and each country wants there own league. If other orgs get big enough, the UFC will cross-promote. The way things are now they don’t have to. I would like to see a FIFA-like governing body in MMA that sets up Champions League-type superfights under a neutral banner (I know, I’m dreaming, no pun intended). MMA is too big for one promotion. One organization running everything means MMA is shrinking, not growing.

And if the UFC does want to become the only kid on the block, like the NFL and NHL – it needs to start paying its fighters WAY more than the other orgs – like the NFL and NHL. That’s the only way it can ever happen. The UFC’s penny-pinching is preventing them from being the only game in town.

Jeremy and David, Great points. I may be repeating myself but I think you both may have missed what I was getting at. I have no problems with other MMA organizations existing for the sole purpose of feeding UFC. I just think that having too many MAJOR organizations waters the talent pool down way too much. I love Strikeforce and what they do. I know they will be around for a while, because of their game plan. These flash in the pan organizations that are trying to get rich off of us the fans, won’t be around long, If they(Affliction) hadn’t shown up at all we might have already seen Fedor in the UFC, who knows? In short I know that the UFC can’t pay for everyone to fight for them, but without paying the weak they could pay for the best. Why not have every card the UFC puts out be top notch from top to bottom? Only the top 50 fighters from every weight class would get to fight for the UFC, you drop out of the top 50 bye bye. I know a lot of people who live in the U.K. that would love to see 10 good fights instead of the duds they have had to endure.

Fair enough Jay, in a perfect world the UFC would have the best fighters in each weight class, unfortunately that is never going to happen. I would love to see every card stacked with quality fighters instead of TUF rejects and mediocre local fighters but because of ego and money it’s not realistic.
With Dana in control, as much as he has done for the UFC brand, there are always going to be quality fighters that won’t sign up. He has forced out so many fighters because of petty squabbling over non-issues like video games that it has become a running joke.
Plus there are some quality fighters in other countries like Aoki who aren’t going to come over and fight in the US and after the Pride buyout it is unlikely that the UFC will ever be as popular as the likes of Dream in Japan. There are also the rule changes and weight divisions to consider and a top 50 ranking system would be open to interpretation and it would be unfair to the fighters to decide on their futures in this type of way. So as big as the UFC is, it would be detrimental for the sport if the likes of Affliction collapse.

Affliction being around has nothing to do with Fedor not being in the UFC.Fedor would have already signed with the UFC ages ago, but he was not happy with the contract it wasn’t about the money, at the time he said the UFC had offered him the most money. It is a good thing that other Affliction and other orgs are around because we get to see fighters that we all know are talented and that either do not want to bend over and touch their toes for the UFC or for some reason wether it’s because a division is already stacked, the UFC does not give then a contract. Without Affliction we would not have seen the fights we already have and as alraedy mentioned the UFC would not be stepping up their game the way they have. Who knows how many good fights and fighters we would never see if there wasn’t another org, because some fighters were not happy to sell their souls to the UFC, or if Dana has a personal issue or even if a pretty descent fighter gets kicked out for a couple of bad performances. I see where Jay is comming from, but in reality especially with the UFC I do not see it working, you would not get all the best fighters, just the ones who are happy to sign a UFC contract and the ones Dana doesn’t have issues with. The rest you would probably never really get to see fight or get the recognition they deserve. That is ok for the UFC fan but not the MMA fan.

TIto ortiz just said that he would not fight Fedor becouse 10 days notice is to little time and monday was his 3rd day of training since being cleared to train and that he is in no shape to fight right now.
Some people maay call him a p*ssy for not accepting the fight but I think its the smartest thing he has done in years if he accepts it would be another loss for him, most likely KO and if he had a chance to sign back with the UFC dana would prob flip out for helping afflictions main event and this will prob be afflictions last event so he wouldnt have a future with them either his only choice would be strikeforce and they prob wont have the money he is asking for.

If they want buys they try and get Tito. It would be a terrible fight if it happens though. With only 10 days notice and coming off back surgey and not having fought since his loss to Machida Titos chance are really bad. If Tito was in shape and ready his chances wouldnt be good but this would be a waste of time. Only benefit is seeing Tito get crushed if you are into that sort of thing.
They will probably try to get Werdum as he was training for a fight and should be in shape. Well Werdum shape any way so a little round and lumpy.

I’d prefer him to fight tito for a couple of reasons.
1) Size, Tito would be at a guess around 230lbs at the mo, Vitor would be dieting his way down to 185 so around 197 ish? Based on that I would give Tito more of a shot (around 0.2% mind you).
2) It would save the Belfort/Santiago fight
3) Tito sells PPV’s = affliction saved?
4) I’m gonna say this and get flamed… I like Tito and want to see him back fighting, plus he has nothing to lose.

The only problem with Tito fighting Fedor other than the obvious is that Tito’s only chance of beating Fedor is……well, he has no chance. BUT if it were to even hang with Fedor and make it a fight, he’d need to have a lot in his gas tank. Tito is not a dangerous striker so he won’t catch Fedor in a miracle punch, so he’d have to win on the ground. There’s no way Tito will have that kind of energy with just 10 days notice. I say Chuck Liddel needs to step up and fight Fedor on a one and done fight agreement with Affliction. This is their last event anyway and what better way for Chuck to redeem himself or get killed and then retire forever.

Honestly the only fighter that I think could possibly save this promotion at this time. If he took the fight that is…would be Brett Rogers. Besides a couple of heavyweight in the UFC…there is no one in MMA who stands a chance getting past the second round against Fedor.

Werdum is the only guy that makes sense. He’s a ranked HW, at least.
Of course, Affliction is doomed. this is the biggest disaster possible short of Fedor testing positive. Barnett just crushed his own career and the biggest opportunity he will ever have. Has any HW ever gone from ranked #2 to not ranked in one day without fighting?
Nothing they can do but suck it up and shove Werdum in there. It’s not fair to Fedor to shove a MW like Belfort in with him. That’s a no-win situation. Ortiz would be a bigger name than Werdum, but another chance for Fedor-haters to grumble about non-HW’s.
They should simply get the best available HW they have that is ready to fight and that is Werdum.

Brett Rogers is another good choice. He’s coming off a better performance vs. Arlovski than Fedor and he’s ranked higher than Werdum (though nowhere near as tested).
He’s got a puncher’s chance and will obviously never get a chance to use it as he will be taken down and armbarred faster than you can say Barnett in Japan.
Werdum has a much better chance, but Rogers is a better sell.

Randy has already been dealt a Lesnar beating. I think Fedor is the only contender to smash him cos Fedor is one tough cookie.Remember when he was slammed headfirst into the deck and wasnt even fazed. Most guys would have been KTFO.
