UFC 101 fight card and complete line up announced for Aug. 8 in Philadelphia

Ultimate Fighting Championship confirmed the remaining under card bouts for its next major pay-per-view (PPV), which is scheduled for Wachovia Center in Philadelphia on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009.
The final 11-fight line up for UFC 101 -- the promotion’s first-ever trip to Pennsylvania -- is now official (even though we’ve known about the match ups for some time now).
UFC 101 will feature a main event between lightweight champion BJ Penn and number one contender Kenny Florian. In addition, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva will step up once again to compete at light heavyweight against former 205-pound champion, Forrest Griffin, in a three-round, non-title special attraction.
Here is the complete UFC 101 fight card:
Main event:
UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian
Main card (Televised):
205 lbs.: Forrest Griffin vs. Anderson Silva
185 lbs.: Amir Sadollah vs. Johny Hendricks
185 lbs.: Kendall Grove vs. Ricardo Almeida
155 lbs.: Kurt Pellegrino vs. Josh NeerUnder card (May not be broadcast):
155 lbs.: Shane Nelson vs. Aaron Riley
170 lbs.: John Howard vs. Tamdan McCrory
185 lbs.: Alessio Sakara vs. Thales Leites
170 lbs.: Matt Riddle vs. Dan Cramer
155 lbs.: George Sotiropoulos vs. Rob Emerson
170 lbs.: Danillo Villefort vs. Jesse Lennox
We’re now just a few weeks away from showtime, which will have its share of storylines. Can Florian kill "the master?" Will Griffin press the lethal "Spider" and suffer the consequences?

Alessio Sakara should be on the main card!!..
Sadollah vs Hendricks is a joke but the UFC knows they can sell cards on just the main event these days like boxing so whatever… pretty uninteresting fights on this card to be honest!
Kenny wins this fight easily, so does Anderson! I’ll get myself crunked out and party all night..

Saying Alessio needs to be on the main card was so bad a start I had to skip the rest of your post. You would rather see Sakara over a TUF winner?
by jay on Jul 21, 2009 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions
Solid card all around…I’d like to see Sakara/Leites as well but that’s what you get when you waste your opportunity of a lifetime. I’d also like to see Sotiropoulos/Emerson…that might get fight of the night honors.
I don’t think Kenny wins this fight easy…but he will win. It’s going to be a hard fought match cause BJ at LW is no joke. His training and dedication have been a joke though so he may not come in fully prepared for this fight. Kenny has been frothing at the mouth for another title shot and he’s way more hunfry than BJ is right now. BJ is still talking about fighting GSP again…sounds a little like he’s overlooking Kenny. I think Kenny will come in very focused with a solid game plan to neitralize BJ in the first few rounds and get him frustrated and make BJ make mistakes and capatilize on them. Kenny has never been tired in a fight recently and he’s going to punish Penn in the championship rounds.
I hope the Silva/Griffin fight is entertaining but I don’t see what Forrest can do to win this fight other than get Silva to the ground. Griffin doesn’t have great wrestling but he’s the bigger guy in the fight so he might be able to pull it off. Silva is just better everywhere in this fight but Griffin has the heart of a champion.

Sakara is sh!t anyway but pairing him up with one half of the worst main event in UFC history = No chance in hell of being on the Main card in a million years!

Sakara is a one dimensional striker, who isn’t even that good standing in the first place, whilst Leites put on the most pathetic main event performance that I have ever seen and cost Maia a title shot so both deserve to be on the undercard, although I agree that I’d rather see this fight than Amir-Hendricks any day.
Amir is the Michael Owen of MMA and is easily the worst TUF winner so far, the guy is so injury prone it’s unreal. Hendricks is just some no name can brought in for an easy win but I bet he’ll end up spoiling the UFC’s plans by winning, making this whole fight pointless.
Having said that, BJ-Kenny and Andy-Griffin are such good fights that this show doesn’t need a good undercard to be great. Neer-Pellegrino and Grove-Almeida could both be good fights as well and if everything goes to plan, Leites-Sakara will end up making the broadcast anyway.

by Syd[a.k.a."the Negation"] on Jul 21, 2009 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Absolutely—-especially since he’s fighting Leites who just fought for their division belt. Besides, though Amir seems like a nice guy, his TUF winner status no longer looks so impressive when we place him side by side with former fellow TUF competitor, Jesse Taylor, who’s fighting skill seems to have blown far past the virtually inactive Sadollah’s.
by wesley on Aug 4, 2009 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions
agreed, sakara vs leites should def be on the main card instead of sadollah vs hendricks. pellegrino and almeida are both from jersey so they make some sense on the card. i’ll admit the UFC had me sold on just bj vs kenny and anderson vs forrest. plus the UFC never does shows on the east coast, so since i live in jersey just 2 hrs from philly, i feel like i have to go. would’ve went to UFC 78 at prudential but bisping vs evans for a main event? Sorry Mac but I am rooting for my fellow Boricua, Cotto.
Although I love Pacman, I think Cotto’s two fisted body attack is going to be problematic for Pac’s endurance.
K-Dog, Mayweather is a ducker and a dodger in the ring and out of the ring.
I don’t think he gets past Marquez. Marquez will give him pure hell and I don’t see Mayweather’s ego allowing him another shellacking at the hands of either Cotto/Pacman.

Nah….Sadollah deserves the main card since I believe this is his first fight since winning TUF (2 previous bouts were cancelled due to his injuries). After Leitas last performance despite the fact he was facing the best guy in his class, doesn’t deserve main card IMO. His laying on his back with his legs and a$$ up reminded me of Robert Downey Jr in Back to School saying “do me, do me”.

Sorry Kobajack, Amir doesn’t cut it as a professional fighter, if you get injured as often as Amir does then fighting isn’t for you. Keeping healthy is a huge part of being a mixed martial artist and Amir has failed at this aspect of the sport miserably.

If anyone beats Anderson it will be Machida or Maia. Lyoto has looked world class recently and is the only guy at MW or LHW who has the power and technique to outstrike Anderson.
As for Maia, Andy has been caught in submissions before (although his jits has improved a lot since then) and Maia is on a different level on the ground, but it all depends on whether Demian could take him down.
Other than these two, I have Silva winning comfortably against any opponent.
by David W-S on Jul 21, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Silva vs. Machida will never happen, they train 2gether and will not fight each other. But I could see Maia catching him, good point.

I am actually very interested to see the George S. fight. He looked very impressive in his last fight but has been on the shelf for a while I believe.
Unfortunately I think both the Grove/Almeida and the Neer/Batman fight have the potential to go the distance so that will not leave a lot of room for undercard bouts.
Also, think Kenny would be smart to drag this fight into the championship rounds but I am not complaining about that.

by alpha on Jul 21, 2009 11:00 AM EDT reply actions
Man there are so many holes in this argument, I’ll have to go through one at a time:
1. The last guy who was supposed to be too big for Anderson got KO’d in a minute
2. You can’t play MMA Maths, so what if Forrest beat Rampage in a controversial decision, that doesn’t impact on this fight, if you play it that way then Andy submitted Hendo whilst Rampage took him to a decision, so Silva would beat Rampage, see it doesn’t work at all
3. Anderson hasn’t been rocked by anyone, he has excellent head movement and has dominated everyone standing up so his technique can’t be that bad, comparing him to Liddell at this point is ridiculous, Chuck got too old and fell into bad habits whilst Andy is in his prime and is rarely hit, that is why guys like him and Machida are dominating their divisions
4. Forrest is known for having weak punches so there is no way that he will KO Anderson, his brawling style hasn’t KO’d anyone and it won’t start with a top 3 p4p fighter like Andy
by David W-S on Jul 21, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions
forest is alot bigger than anyone the spider has battled forest is almost like a heavyweight and eveyyone forest has battled has gotten hit alot take a look at all of his fights spider got hit with some good shots by henderson early in the first thats why he got in the clinch and taken down plus forests leg kicks are underrated spider wont be able to catch his leg with his hand if he tries to do that with forest he will get caught also forest can summit people on the ground I think forest can choke him out on the ground spider is beatable what do you think forest or any opponent should just stnd in the ring and tapout when the bell rings and say I quit I cant beat this guy forest will beat the spider

Ok, perhpas I am just trying to justify myself bc this is my hometown and also my first live UFC event, but how are 70% of you’s saying this is a terrible card. I saw some person write to put it on spike. I mean come on. You have three TUF WINNERS (two are absolute fan favorites) a decent undercard, two of the best p4p fighters (although still think BJ will lose)fighting in a title fight and a “superfight”. I only matchup I reall dont care to see is grove/almedia. Neer and Pellegrino should be a fuckin war. Also"Batman" fought Joe Stevenson for #1 contender back at UFC 74. Somebody please enlighten me on why this card blows or I am just shielding this card bc I want it to be awesome so bad bc its my first.
by charr552 on Jul 21, 2009 11:50 AM EDT reply actions
I agree some people are never happy, sure the undercard isn’t the best but the two main events are huge fights and this is coming in between two really stacked cards. I’m more excited for this card than I was for 100, hopefully the UFC will sort out a TV deal in the UK ASAP.

Anderson Silva wins by tko in the 3rd. BJ PENN wins by decision. Kendall Grove wins also. Anderson Silva fights either Shogun, Rashad, Rampage. Nothing in 185 to offer THE SPIDER.
by Cory on Jul 21, 2009 2:22 PM EDT reply actions
The rest of this card doesn’t look too great apart from Neer Pellegrino which should be FOTN, it doesnt really matter because the two main events are just phenomenal! For me theyre just as good if not better than the main events at UFC 100! The reason why everyone loves MMA and the UFC in particular the uncertainty over who will win. I certainly cant pick a winner out of either.
