'King Mo' Lawal vs Don Frye booked for M-1 show in Los Angeles on Aug. 28

Undefeated up-and-comer Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal (4-0) will lock horns with grizzled veteran Don Frye (20-7-1) at "M-1 Global Presents Breakthrough" from the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 28, according to HDNetFights.com.

It will mark the United States debut for the decorated collegiate wrestling champion and Division I All-American from Oklahoma State University.

Lawal has competed exclusively under the World Victory Road banner in Japan since his professional mixed martial arts debut just last year. The 28-year-old has show tremendous promise, defeating several veterans of the sport and stopping most of them.

His biggest -- and perhaps most surprising victory -- came in his debut against Travis Wiuff at Sengoku: "Fifth Battle" -- Lawal needed little more than two minutes to score a convincing technical knockout win via strikes. He most recently outpointed Ryo Kawamura via unanimous decision at Sengoku: "Seventh Battle" back in March 2009.

Despite the 15-year difference in age, Lawal will certainly want to be careful against "The Predator" if he intends to keep his perfect record intact.

Frye -- who began his career way back in 1996 with an eight-second knockout win over Thomas Ramirez at UFC 8: "David vs. Goliath" -- has spent most of the last seven years fighting overseas for the K-1 and Pride FC promotions.

The self-professed beer lover has competed less frequently since Pride FC went out of business in 2007 -- just three times to be precise. Frye has won two of those three bouts, including his most recent fight against Rich Moss at Shark Fights 4 back in May via submission (rear naked choke).

Like Lawal, Frye boasts a very solid wrestling background. However, he has been known to throw caution to the wind recently and trade punches rather than shoot for takedowns. He clearly holds the edge in experience, as well as submissions.

But Lawal has youth, and more than likely endurance on his side, making this one an interesting test to see where he stands in the grand scheme on things.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more news and updates regarding "M-1 Global Presents Breakthrough."

by Dragon on Jul 21, 2009 7:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t get the hype behind this guy. It’s not like he has beaten anyone remarkably good or anything. I compare this fight to a Lashley/Sapp type freak show (don’t mean to offend Lashley). Dude would get killed against anyone thats C+ or above.

Also, his entrances are even more retarded than Mayhem or Gono’s. Just another attention whore.

King Mo!! lol I wish I was a king, then I could probably be well over hyped as well.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jul 21, 2009 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

hahaha again bashing someone for not beating anyone of any caliber (king mo) but then you praise fedor for beating a bunch of freakshows and has-beens, with the exception of a few fights!! What happens when king mo beats 20 or so guys in a row will he be the greatest ever?? will you all jump on his “bandwagon” like you have fedors?? I hope the king wins and continues to win so he can get to the ufc and get KTFO by Rampage!!!

Comparing Mo Lawal to Fedor makes a lot of sense.

About as much sense as people switching to other people’s screen names thinking its funny or something….

Question: Have you ever seen Fedor fight? And when did you begin watching MMA?

by ViolentMike on Jul 21, 2009 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Tell him vm, immature motherfocker taking my name!! Ever heard eminem feat dmx and obie trice “go to sleep”?? Look it up FakeDragon that is my theme song to you……….

Fedor has beaten just about everyone. coleman hunt arlovski sylvia cro cop nogueira arona sobral. all those guys were in their prime and all were 5 levels up from anything king mo has fought. get a clue

by pug on Jul 21, 2009 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

hahahahahahaha yeah i’ve seen fedor fight , his fight against cro crop was terrible , as was hong man choi , sylvia was not good either and AA was really not impressive brett rodgers ko’d him in like 30 seconds how long did it take fedor the “great” ???
i’ve been watching mma for a long time now! just wait and see barnett is going to ko fedor in a couple weeks

by TheDragon on Jul 21, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

@ thedragon, dude every time you try to bash fedor, you sound like a dumbass. your like the guys who try to say jorden was over rated, or barry sanders sucked because he never won a super bowl. Fedor= greatest HW.

Id love to see Don KO this punk and give him another punch or two after he’s out.

by Lester The Pimp on Jul 21, 2009 7:59 AM EDT reply actions

James Thompson beat him. He wants Rampage fighting guys like this? Hope Fry wins though

by Tony on Jul 21, 2009 8:00 AM EDT reply actions

ya but Don was drunk for that one

by McArthur on Jul 21, 2009 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Mac, that is the first time I have heard drunk as an excuse. I have heard a lot of them, but drunk?

by jay on Jul 21, 2009 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

So much for Lashley-Frye, I wonder whether Bobby’s TNA career blew that fight. I’ve heard a lot about King Mo and the Rampage video proved that he has a lot of charisma (unlike Lashley who didn’t say a single thing), so it’s time to see how good he really is. Frye is a legend but hasn’t done much since Pride, however he’ll still be a tough test for a rookie as long as he fights smart, trading punches with King Mo isn’t a smart thing to do.

by David W-S on Jul 21, 2009 8:18 AM EDT reply actions

Why was King Mo on ultimate fighter? (In that clip with Rampage?) I’m confused…

by MSlice on Jul 21, 2009 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Hey jesse…Condit’s facebook is reporting Lytle is official

by McArthur on Jul 21, 2009 8:35 AM EDT reply actions

Lashley is another guy that’s all hype , just because brock is making a name in mma doesnt mean anyone from wwe can!! yeah lashley was a decorated amatuer , but look at his fights !! the guida fight was a joke honestly even if lashley had no mma training at all with his size and wrestling abilities he should have controlled guida on the ground and not let it go the distance!! it’s not like the big cave man is in shape or any good!! and the sapp fight!! it was almost as bad!!!

by TheDragon on Jul 21, 2009 10:41 AM EDT reply actions

You remember in grade school the kid that was always picked last at kickball?? That would be you on this website, nobody likes you, go away……….

by Dragon on Jul 21, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Fake dragon wtf are you going on about? This post is about King Mo, not Fedor, not Bobby Lashley, nor anyone else that you hate! Get it??

by attakdog on Jul 21, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Don Fry is still fighting? He’s like 102 yrs old.

by MMA ANALYST on Jul 21, 2009 1:49 PM EDT reply actions

What did Don Frye do to deserve this match up?
Japan must hate Don!

by jjdnb on Jul 21, 2009 3:21 PM EDT reply actions
