Rich Franklin vs Dan Henderson 2 will headline UFC 103 on Sept. 19

Former champions Rich Franklin (25-4) and Dan Henderson (25-7) will collide for the second time this year in the UFC 103 main event from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19.

The promotion made the surprise announcement earlier today; however, the weight limit for the rematch is unclear at this time. The pair first battled to a somewhat controversial split decision at UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson" with "Dangerous" earning the nod from the judges after three rounds of action.

Perhaps the UFC felt as if there was some unfinished business. Or, it just needed a compelling main event to anchor its upcoming trip back to the "Lonestar State." Regardless, it's certainly odd timing with Henderson in the hunt for another middleweight title shot and "Ace" out to establish himself among the best in the 205-pound class.

Henderson most recently put his stamp on Michael Bisping at UFC 100, knocking out the British posterboy with a crushing right hand that had "The Count" down and out. It was a highlight reel finish that will more than likely go down as one of the best ever inside the Octagon.

The former Olympic wrestler earned a showdown with Bisping after defeating Franklin to earn a spot as coach on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 mixed martial arts reality series. It marked his third consecutive win after returning to the promotion with back-to-back losses.

And the highlight reel fashion on which he did it had most under the impression that he was on the short list to rematch 185-pound deity Anderson Silva ... certainly not Franklin.

For his part, Franklin scored a big win over the always dangerous Wanderlei Silva at UFC 99: "The Comeback" via unanimous decision back in June at a catchweight of 195 pounds. It was the third win in the last four attempts for the Cincinnati, Ohio, native, solidifying his position as a serious, and capable, light heavyweight contender.

Once again, this is a curious booking with both fighters seemingly headed in the same direction albeit in different weight classes. Someone will get derailed on fight night ... dare to venture who?

Also confirmed for UFC 103 today is the heavyweight tilt between former Pride FC superstar Mirko Cro Cop and surging heavyweight prospect Junior Dos Santos. In addition, Martin Kampmann and Mike Swick will collide to determine the number one contender for Georges St. Pierre’s 170-pound title.

Hey guys, I just read on Yahoo that they will also rematch Tim Sylvia and Andre Arlovski, with Anderson Silva and Thailes Leites on the same night!

Be ready for some fireworks!!!!

OMG!!!! Bisping and Leben II is on the card also!

UFC 100 will seem like an Affliction card after 103.

This is serious Bullsh*t. Who the hell wants to see these two fight again? Maybe in 2 years time or something but not now.

If Rich should rematch anyone it should be Wandy. Dan is on his way to a title shot and holding him back with a pointless rematch that does nothing for either fighter is stupid.

by Ca$z on Jul 21, 2009 5:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Way to screw Dan over! Breathtakingly pointless fight for both. Their first one was hardly an instant classic that fans have been clammering for a rematch for, maybe 18 months/two years down the line, but not now!

Just lazy, lazy matchmaking. These two are both quite popular, f@ck it lets stick em together again, we can get away with that. The UFC dont want Hendo fighting Silva again, too much of a hard sell and they haven’t got a clue what to do with Franklin. Is he a 185er, a 195er, a 205er? Terrible matchup!

by attakdog on Jul 21, 2009 6:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Following Hendo’s most devestating UFC win he gets shafted. First his “range rover” of a gift breaks down 1 hour into driving it, and now THIS?

If Hendo won by decision against Bisping, this fight wouldn’t piss me off quite as much. But he DEMOLISHED Bisping to the point that he’ll likely never be the same.

Hendo went 5 rounds with Rampage in a VERY close fight
He is the ONLY fighter to win a round against Anderson Silva.
He won a convincing decision against a BJJ ace
He snuck by Franklin in a decision
And he KO’d Bisping into the next millenium.

What should that equal? Title Shot.

Maia against Silva would be just like Leites/Silva.

Marquardt vs Silva was such a mismatch is was laughable. Dan actually won a round against Anderson.

I know it sounds F’d up, but I hope Rich gets injured in training very soon. Imagine Hendo vs Tito…

by ViolentMike on Jul 21, 2009 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I would rather if they broke these two up to fight seperate fighters. These two have so many possibilities why not let them both get away with their first fight. It was a win win fight, because tho Hendo won the decision I felt Franklin actually won because he was more the aggressor. So really its like nobody lost the fight and both got to show why they are so hard to finish… unless it comes to Anderson Silva.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jul 21, 2009 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

There is a reason Bisping/Hendo was never hyped by the UFC as a #1 contender match. They had no intention of giving Hendo another crack at Anderson’s strap. Bisping was their cash cow and their new contender, and now that he’s on ice, they will find a new contender elsewhere.

The guys they would love to put in there with Anderson are Belfort and Wanderlei. You can see they’ve already laid some groundwork for hyping those potential match-ups. But Maia would do in a pinch as well.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 21, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

If Ozone and Turbo are on the same night I can’t lie, I’m watching them over Hendo and Franklin.

so stuuupid..way to waste a fight card on something that just happened.

whats the justification that henderson wins 2 in a row…one of which to Franklin…only to fight him again when he deserves a title shot? Wheres the motivation?

You would think that Dana would want to bring back Tito for this fight against Franklin being as they are going head to head with Mayweather that night. I guess it is more complicated than you would think though. Maybe they even tried to make something like that happen or maybe they are planning on making another exciting fight. Regardless, I will be watching this UFC over mayweather. Cro Cop vs Dos Santos has knock out written all over it ;)

Maybe the UFC wanted to have a big star fighting Franklin. Think about it. Hendo just had that huge knockout and he probably got the most coverage out of UFC 100 next to Lesnar of course. Combine that with the fact that it is a good rematch and you have a good fight. This is in comparison to the other options. Other than Ortiz, the other options just weren’t big enough names.

by DSmith on Jul 20, 2009 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with u Smith, i thought the plan was to give hendo another title shot with Anderson.

by BMO on Jul 20, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

That was never part of the UFC’s plans. Their plans involved Bisping getting a shot if he beat Dan, because they could sell the shit out of that fight in the UK.

Their other plans probably include Maia, if he can get through Nate, or even Wanderlei or Belfort. They don’t want to put the same guys in there with Anderson when there are a lot of other good fighters at 185 now.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 20, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I was really looking forward to seeing Henderson vs A. Silva 2. I think Dan Henderson is the man to beat Silva and it would have been a hell of a fight. This fight doesnt get me excited at all. It is too soon for a rematch .. especially when there are so many other options for Franklin out there .. like Luiz Cane for example.

by boz on Jul 20, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree JJ,Nate was before Dan(in the division standing)when he ask for Maia! And the UFC probably want to set up the Belfort/Silva fight right after the spider vs.(Nate/Maia winner) fight.

Seriously though this matchup is retarded but if hendo fights with decent aggression in the clinch and takedown/gnp, he won’t horribly get outclassed on the feet like in their last fight. (Interesting note for those who haven’t seen, Fightmetric had it for Hendo but with the 10 point must, it was a draw- it’s all in the details)

If Hendo is going to fight at 205lbs it should be with soneone other than Franklin. D. White seems to be sticking it to Hendo for some reason. However, maybe Hendo likes the idea of fighting Franklin, if Silva is unavailable?

by DAVE A on Jul 20, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

BULLSHIT!!! Dan deserves a title shot at MW, WTF is he doing fighting Rich at ANY weight??? The only good thing about this fight is that Dan has the opportunity to silence all the haters from the first fight. I really don’t understand this unless either Joe Silva or Dana White really honestly feels that Franklin won the first fight; and I definatley DO NOT!! OMG I said before their first fight that I was bored to death with the matchup because I knew it would likely be a stalemate decision that could go either way, and the only way i’m going to be happy about it is if someone gets knocked out. And I went on to say That Rich Franklin in general bores me unless he is on the losing side of a ko. Then I get mma true believers (you know who you are) that get all bent out of shape at me for saying just that. On a side note Rich went on to lose by decision only to rebound with another boring decision win over W. Silva. Heres to another boring decision match involving Rich Franklin, that is unless dan’s momentum can drive him to another KO, in which case my complaints and grievances would be for nothing because I would get the one outcome of any “Ace” fight that is entertaining to me.

However this keeps my master plan intact.

This fight doesn’t make any sense. Dan wants to fight Anderson and he gets Franklin? Dan should fight the winner of Marquart and Maia after Franklin.

by Bluepit on Jul 20, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he stated unless he gets Silva next he would like to fight at 205. I guess they weren’t willing to give him an immediate title shot so he’s going to 205. I could see them doing it at 195 or 185 though to change it up from the last fight. I don’t think this fight makes a whole lot of sence, but it still should be a good fight, so I’m not complaining.

by DB on Jul 20, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess this just leaves us with more room for speculation on Ortiz. I wonder if Ortiz used his making up with Dana as a way to get more from Strikeforce..It’s very possible. It’s not like it would effect Dana White all that much either. It would just mean that Strikeforce was putting out more money to get Tito.

Seems like the ufc is trying to screw the fans. They have more and more ppv every year. The majority of the ppv are getting weaker and weaker every year. There was a time when UFC ppv meant something. It was either title fights or number oner contender fights. This fight means absolutely nothing. Should cut ppvs back to about 9 or ten a year and and put everything else on fight night. Yeah they give us a lot of ppv but we are getting less for our money than we did 2 years ago. Hell some fighters on fight twice a year. Lighweight title has not been defended in almost 15 months.

Don’t count on Dan winning in the stand up. Rich pretty much dominated the stand up last time IMO. The only time that Dan looked good in the stand up against Rich was in the beginning when he hit Rich with the solid right. Rich landed more shots and the kicks were the big factor against Dan. Dan had better prepare for those kicks and Rich should prepare for defending off of his back and standing up the fight. I am going to lean towards Rich winning this fight. I really don’t want to see these two fight again.

Franklin won the “fight” Dan won the decision..
Franklin definitely had Hendo more hurt and tired than himself and landed more cleaner shots..
takedowns are overscored

Why is the picture up there photoshopped? It’s not like there isn’t any pictures of their weigh ins or fight or anything…just saying.

I love how the article says Henderson “earned” a showdown with Bisping. Shouldn’t that be the other way around.

seems a bit too soon to have this rematch.

by kitsunex on Jul 20, 2009 6:15 PM EDT reply actions

yeah horrible on joe silvas part there are better match ups for these two! dans wrestling is too good for franklin to overcome! at least assuming dan wins again he will have a guarteed title shot.

by Colin D on Jul 20, 2009 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought Frank won the first one, but it was definitely close so I don’t think Hendo’s wrestling is too good.

Anyway, I wonder if this will be at 195 lbs again

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 20, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I felt that Hendo won but you are right when you say it was really close. Rich definitely had the better striking and his kicks were picking Hendo apart. Those take downs made the difference for Hendo.

by RyanHobbs on Jul 20, 2009 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

i totally agree, i know the first one was close but this is way to soon and there are so many other people for them to fight, just a waste of time at this point and as a headliner not the best.

by roy on Jul 20, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

NO!!!!! Hendo needs to fight the Spider or at least the winner of Maia/Marquardt. . This is the first time in a while I’ve been disappointed in Joe Silva.

by haglnuts on Jul 20, 2009 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

you should be mad at dana white not the matchmaker. Who do you think has the final say???

by iamdanawhite on Jul 20, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

actually both fighters agreed to it…so be mad at Frankilin and Dan, we all now from previous times, Vera and Wandy both turning down fights to fight Andreson, so fighters do have the power so say no…um I would have liked to see Franklin vs Cain, and if you guys want Dan vs the winner of Nate vs Maia or Andrson then he wouldn’t be fighting until November……Not the best but it’s still a good fight and I will be watching.

by Robert(1) on Jul 20, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Cant be mad at the fighters. They need a paycheck

by Lance2576 on Jul 20, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah Dana has the final say, so to blame the fighters that are paid to fight or the matchmaker is stupid… If anything the fighters managers should step in cause the fighters shouldn’t have to stand up to Dana and say no, cause everybody knows the dictator that Dana is!

Dan’s manager should atleast have done something about this since he won the first time and just scored a KO in a dominant performance over a top 185 contender..

by RoB on Jul 20, 2009 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would Franklin say no? He thought he won last time, a lot of people thought he won, so why wouldn’t he want to avenge the loss.

I really like these two fighters immensely and the match-up is far from boring, although I’ll be sad to see one of them lose.

But it does seem a bit too soon to be fighting each other again. But I accept it. And it’s a great match-up.

by Kobajack on Jul 20, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly i think both are happy to fight each other, specially as the main event as they will be getting a % of the PPV money.

by dtoto on Jul 20, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Wanderlie vs Hendo 3 would be a much more exciting fight although I would hate to see either of them lose. I am not very excited to see Rich vs Hendo 2 at all. I would much rather see Rich face off against Jon Jones, Luiz Cane, or even Tito Ortiz.

by RyanHobbs on Jul 20, 2009 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

your right jon jones vs tito for titos comeback?

by Colin D on Jul 20, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That would be a great matchup as well. I would much rather see either of these guys face off against Rich for UFC 103 though. I want to see Hendo and Rich do well in their respective weight classes. Why couldn’t Hendo step in to fight Brandon Vera instead? That would have been a more exciting fight for me to watch.

yeah rich is acting like a crybaby about their previous fight oh well i hope dan can make him regret asking for this rematch!

Acting like a crybaby? How? Have you seen him dissing Dan through the media or complaining about it? No. Separate your opinion from your obvious bias.

by Kobajack on Jul 20, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, they needed a bigger name opponent for Rich than Luiz Cane. They’re taking on Money Mayweather that night with head-to-head PPVs. These guys are both still elite fighters but I can’t say I really feel like watching them fight again. Franklin be decision.

This main event doesn’t knock your socks off, but with Cro-Cop/Dos Santos and Swick/Kampmann rounding out the main card it’s a pretty deep event. some really good undercard fights too.

by RoB on Jul 20, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

boxing for sure.

by Bennie Blanco on Jul 20, 2009 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t watch mayweather box on tha 19th if they paid me. I would rather watch two people with no arms in a slapping match, it would be more entertaining. Not to mention they’d probably hit harder. Boxing is on life-support. (Don King ruined it with his fight fixing).

by corey c on Jul 20, 2009 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

It would have been great if they had Tito on this event. Tito can hype an event much like Mayweather and would therefore be great for a headliner going head to head with Mayweather IMO.

by RyanHobbs on Jul 20, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

So if Bisping had won he would be fighting for the belt…

but if Hendo won he moves back up to 205 to fight a man he has already beaten.

I think this is rich’s doing he probably bitched at dana and dan for a rematch and dan the warrior that he is doesnt turn down fights. I though rich wanted to please the fans with his fights but this clearly is just upsetting us all. rich franklin = bitch after silva made him suck his cock.

Henderson has earned a rematch with Anderson Silva. He is the only one that can dethrone the champ.
That’s the fight everyone is waiting for.

by vega on Jul 20, 2009 6:22 PM EDT reply actions

Henderson would just get tooled again. The UFC wants new blood like Maia in there with him, and I agree. Marquardt is a better opttion than Dan as well, because he is young and has improved a lot since their first fight. Dan is just a little older than the last time he got owned. He hasn’t improved since then, if anything he’s deteriorated, so there’s no reason at all to believe the outcome would be different.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 20, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

A bit harsh there JJ!Dan isn’t deteriorating,he stays on the same level than before!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jul 20, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I said ‘if anything’ he’s deteriorated. My point was that 40 year-old fighters aren’t getting any better than they were two years ago.

I know bro,I was joking!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jul 20, 2009 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

But I still think that Dan,will get the W again!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jul 20, 2009 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Dan did not get owned, he got caught.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Jul 20, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that’s what happens to everyone who fights Silva. They get caught. You make it sound like he was fighting Matt Hammill and got smashed with a lucky punch. He got “caught” by the best striker in the game, and the same thing will happen again.

Dan lay on him in the first round, then Anderson got sick of that, came out pissed off, and decided to shut Dan down. Henderson was a split second from being KO’d for the first time in that fight. He was smashed and then submitted. Yes, I think he got owned.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 20, 2009 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep exactly JJ, Anderson is on the verge of retiring and is bored with the lack of competition, why would he bother rematching someone who he beat comfortably last year, it’s as pointless as Andy-Franklin III. Dan like Rich is a quality fighter but won’t win a UFC title again, so unfortunately that is why the UFC have to put these two in matches that don’t benefit them. The first fight was close and 103 badly needed a good main event but it’s too soon since the last fight for this to peak my interest, hopefully Rich will win this one as I lost all respect for Dan after his tasteless comments at 100 following a dirty punch.

The only good news is that judging on Joe Silva’s recent matchmaking, Wandi-Bisping is a strong possibility for 105, as he likes to put the winners and losers of fights against each other (see Sanchez/Guida/Diaz/Stevenson) so now there is a great chance of Wandi putting on a great show at Manchester. I like Bisping but I’ll be hoping for a KO by Silva.

Anderson-Maia/Marquardt makes a lot more sense to me, don’t get me wrong Nate got destroyed in his title fight but a win over Maia would make him the top contender. I would have preferred Hendo to be saved for a potential fight with Nate in case he won as it would make the rematch more marketable and the winner would be the unquestioned top contender. However I’m confident in Demian’s ability so a dream fight with Anderson is a strong possibility for the end of the year, in a perfect world Andy and Maia will both win their fights without injury and would be on 105 but more likely it will be a headliner for a card later in the year.

by David W-S on Jul 20, 2009 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

you say dan got owned but nate marquardt got OWNED….dan atleast put up a fight and won a round

by JG on Jul 20, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, agreed completely. My argument is that Marquardt has improved FAR more than Dan since their respective fights against Anderson. And Maia has never fought him, so that match-up is probably more intriguing to the UFC.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 20, 2009 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

uhh…..what? This is probably one of the most retarded things Joe Silva has come up with. And hes just about always dead on with his fight picks. This doesnt even make any sense. Its a step back for both guys. If Franklin loses again he doesnt look good at all. If Hendo wins it doesnt boost him at all. I hope they both turn down the fight. Hendo needs his rematch with Spider and Id love to see Franklin give Ortiz a welcome back.

by terribleone on Jul 20, 2009 6:24 PM EDT reply actions

i think this is a great re-match, and a worthy main event for 103. I personally thought that Franklin won that fight. The only strange thing is that i though franklin was moving on in the 205 division and henderson was going to stay in 185;sepecially after the bispbing KO.

I wonder what weight theyll have this fight.

Good fight either way.

I’m more excited for the Kos vs Trigg fight than this crap!! It’s total BS that they put this together, Rich should face off against a top 5 205er, he just beat Wandy, come on!!

I’d rather watch this fight than any of fedors fights with the exception of him fighting a ufc guy, like brock or carwin but we know that’s not going to happen so get over it you can’t have a spectacular card every month !! look at what just took place on the 11th, then you’ve got bj/kenflo forrest/spider followed by randy/nog and jardine / t. silva
this is not a bad fight get over it , yeah it really has no benefit to either guy but it’s still a good match up atleast they will go out and fight!! plus look at the other fights on this card it’s not like its a lame card with a so-so main event won’t be bad just following several good cards that’s why it seems so bad

by TheDragon on Jul 20, 2009 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

You could make the argument that after defeating Wandy, Rich put himself in line for a title shot. His only other loss at 85 was to the current champ. Same case for for Hendo after knocking Bisping tfo. Rich can beat Hendo. It can go either way imo. Good fight for the 85 division.

Retarded.

These are two different guys going in two different directions. They fought. It’s over. Move on. Let Hendo get his title shot at MW. Let Rich fight someone in the LHW division and let them go their own ways.

This makes little sense. A win does nothing to help either guy out in their own weight class, but a loss hurts them.

Retarded.

by Woody on Jul 20, 2009 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

This makes NO SENSE at all. The first fight wasn’t that interesting. Dan should be facing top guys at MW like Marquardt or Maia or Okami. If not, he should be fighting someone like Jardine at LHW. Not Franklin AGAIN. That fight does nothing at all for Hendo him unless he KO’s him. They are just not a compelling match-up any way you look at it. It’s a holding pattern fight. OK Listen, dont blame Joe Silve, Anderson is gonna be occupied with griffin, then probably gonna face the winner of Nate and Damien, Hendo maybe deserve it yeah but dana made too many promises to guys who are not! called Hendo, so this is perfect! Franklin gets the fight he wants, its a fast way to possibly getting a title shot for both guys. Obviously hendo wouldnt take this fight if he wasnt garrenteed a title shot with a win, and this fight put franklin up there in a big time fight with a Forrest, Rampage, Rashad, Hell maybe even a rematch with Machida!
this is a great time for them to fight, cause there is nothing else out there for them
So stop complaining and enjoy a grudge match, cause these guys will not like each other going in. they may not be verbal about it like Bisping and hendo were, but they’ll show it in the cage.

hendo won the first fight even though hendo got his rib broke with a leg kick in the first round the ufc is protecting spider because he will loose to forest and henderson would have won the second fight and marquart has not done enough to get a second title shot if he beats maia marquart or maia will loose to spider it makes no difrence

by alpha on Jul 20, 2009 7:56 PM EDT reply actions

its not a leg kick if it hits his rib, and i disagree with everything u said..

This sucks.

I live in Fort Worth and I wanted to go to my first UFC show…

Tickets are already on sale and sold out in my price range.

I should’ve stayed on top of that… I didn’t realize they were already on sale.

Any tips on getting tickets in the future?

I don’t usually have a problem with their match making, but the UFC really sh!t the bed with this one. I have zero interest in seeing this fight right now.

-Too soon for a rematch.
-Rich is poised to make a run at 205
-Dan is on the move at 185

The only way this thing shakes out to make any sense is if they are creating a weight class at 195 and this will be for the belt.

I got an idea.

What about Rich Franklin and Michael Bisping Tag Team

vs.

Dan Henderson alone.

Then we can just get all this over with.

by nobody on Jul 20, 2009 7:59 PM EDT reply actions

I was actually thinking Bisping could fight Franklin instead but Bisping is going to be fighting at UFC 105. Plus, he has shown no interest in competing at 205 anymore.

WHy can’t the ufc have one fight per card as voted by fans that maybe have purchased ppv’s EVERY F-ing month for the last 6 months. THat way the ufc win wins. More people would buy ppv’s if they knew if they purchased so many ppv’s in a certain time they could be eligible to vote for a dream fight

Bottom line tickets for $200 bucks and all you get for a main event is a rematch that no one wants! What reasoning could there possibly be to this! You bring the UFC back to TX and you put this crap out there for us!!!!!!!! Looks like I’ve managed to save the ticket and travel costs on this one, hell even the PPV cost, definitely not even worth that!

It is a stupid fight in that it has no meaning outside of their own rivalry. I think Rich wants it and Dan is not the type of guy to refuse a rematch. Dan has such a stellar jaw that it’s hard to see Rich really hurting him but ya never know. Nice to see Junior getting a big name to KO.

by naturalist on Jul 20, 2009 8:48 PM EDT reply actions

Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin, Wanderlei Silva. All huge names, big draws, but no real place. They are world class, but not title holders. The person with the best, and only chance of winning a belt, is Dan. The UFC apparently doesn’t want that, so he’s stuck with random fights.

This just seems like it’s not doing anything for either of them. Franklin needs to establish himself at 205, and Hendo deserves a shot at the belt!

by Miketsi on Jul 20, 2009 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

by heathergilmoreloveskuder on Jul 20, 2009 8:52 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, but a lot of people think Franklin won. I watched it again and despite preferring Franklin to be the winner, I would say Hendo just took round two, although that is very contestable. The definites here are that Hendo won round one and Franklin one round three, but round two is open to argument.

Therefore, a rematch is perfectly justified.

What isn’t arguable (unless you’re as stupid as the judge who scored the fight 30-27 in Franklin’s favor) is the fact that Hendo won round one and Franklin won round three. But round two is open to argument.

Therefore, a rematch is perfectly justified.

Hendo won a great fight(imho) in the first encounter, however, he was fortunate it was only a 3 round fight. That night, irrespective of the eye poke, Franklin wins a 5 round battle. I am looking forward to watching this fight but I agree it is too soon. Perhaps they do expect Forrest to beat Silva or they dont care. Its so strange, how about the winner of the Franklin v Hendo fight gets the winner of the Silva v Forrest fight at 205. In this last scenario all have an equal chance of getting screwed.

I think Hendo vs Franklin makes a lot of sense. If Hendo wants to challenge Anderson Silva, he needs at least 2 spectacular wins for his highlight reel promo. Who better than Franklin, who he beat but not without dispute. Guys saying he won fair and square. Yeah, he did, but it was by split, so it was so close, it could’ve easily gone the other way. When Silva was asked, who is the best fighter he has ever faced, Silva said Franklin. If Hendo can’t finish Franklin, there’s gonna be a lot of dispute whether Hendo really deserves the title shot or not. IMO, beating Bisping wasn’t that big of a deal, everyone pretty much knew it was gonna happen. Beating Franklin in similar fashion, solidifies Hendo’s shot at the title, and I’d think Hendo is right at Silva’s level.

I don’t think Hendo is at Silva’s level. Hendo hits hard and is a great wrestler – obviously he has a shot – but Silva’s striking is clearly head and shoulders above everyone else in MMA – his accuracy, hand and foot speed is simply on another level.

Hendo vs. Franklin 2 is a good headline fight — but — the Dana White needs to add one more headline fight for this card to be on par with other cards….What about adding Guida vs. Sanchez 2 on the same card? adding this fight would give this card much needed credibility…

almost every fighter keeps there same styles trough out there carers thats why certain fighters match up better than others henderson is a tough match up against anybody because he is like hitting a firehidrent and is as tough as it gets I dont care if its matchita silva evens or whoever he can beat anybody when forest beats spider henderson would have won the next fight so when this franklin thing is done I think matchita is next for henderson

this is a slap in the face to all ufc fans AND hendo AND franklin. hendo is coming off three big wins. rich at least one. hendo wants the middle weight belt. franklin wants to move up the ladder at 205. we have already watched two of our most beloved fighters go after each other to a pretty much a stalemate. i dont want to see them fight again and i want to see both of them flourish at the end of their careers

Let me get this straight everyone here believes that Dan Henderson deserves a re-match with Middleweight champ Anderson Silva because he’s beaten Michael Bisping (who everyone on this site has claimed to be a C level fighter), Rich Franklin (at 205 lbs) and the very one dimensional Rousimar Palhares?

The next shot should go to the winer of Demian Maia vs. Nate Marquardt or Yushin Okami.

by wolfman on Jul 21, 2009 7:40 AM EDT reply actions

3 quick things:
Guyverbob is funny lol everything Colin d says is retarded
And finally lose or loses is spelt just like I wrote it. Looses is not a word I don’t think I have ever seen any1 spell this word correctly n I sit by too much and watch that. Blah! if he “loses” the fight. And by the way any1 who thought the 1st ace vs hendo was boring isn’t a fight fan. It was a 15 min hockey fight just like ace vs wandi. Great fights and I am all about the rematch. Good job j.Silva and Dana and hendo/ace for wanting 2 put on another good one.

by Daniel worby on Jul 21, 2009 9:35 AM EDT reply actions

I’m happy with the re-match to. I actually thought that Franklin should have won the first one; all Hendo seemed to do is rely on his big right hand (same as with Bisping) yet Franklin was much more versatile, landed more strikes and although he wasn’t as powerful he still displayed a more variety of skills. It seems to me that a lot of people hear are only interested if guys KO’ing everybody. You could also bet that Franklin asked for a re-match and Hendo being Hendo said yes why not.

The UFC obviously needed named fighters for the headline the only other fights that I could come up with for this event are Hendo vs. Wanderlei or Franklin vs. Tito.

by Mad A on Jul 21, 2009 12:11 PM EDT reply actions

God I hate rematches. Just why? Hendo won. Simple as that. And I dont buy the whole split disision thing. I dont care if it was close, the judges ruled the winner. Thats it.

Wasn’t like some crazy no contest or DQ or anything, which I could understand a rematch for.

I have no interest in watching this fight again. Theres so many potential good fights to be made, why do they insist on rematches because 1 judge of 3 felt differently.

by UK_Chris on Jul 21, 2009 12:16 PM EDT reply actions

This fight is STUPID they should of had different opponents for both guys instead of rematch. 1) Hendo vs Wanderlei Silva 185 top contender and 2) Rich Franklin vs Tito Ortiz 205. These two fights are way more interesting…..

by Cory on Jul 21, 2009 2:07 PM EDT reply actions

The overall card is good but I am disapointed in the main event and I dont think it will get alot of buys. I would have much rather seen Henderson vs. W.Silva as the main event and Franklin vs. Luis Cane as the co-main event. Then this card would really compete with Mayweather vs. Marquez fight.
