Just say no: Hawaiian funny business sours KenFlo on UFC 101 title fight

Props: Las Vegas Sun

Quoteworthy:

"I think things changed a little bit when [BJ Penn] went and helped train Joe Lauzon (to fight Florian last April). I take these things personally -- when someone decides to train someone that’s going to fight you. If someone had come to me and said, ‘Hey, can you help me train to fight B.J.?’ I would have said no. He decided to do that and that’s his decision."

Number one lightweight contender Kenny Florian shares his thoughts on earning the second title shot of his career against reigning 155-pound champion and MMA mercenary BJ Penn. "KenFlo" stopped Penn product Joe Lauzon at UFC Fight Night 13 in April 2008 with some nasty "Hellbows" despite some insider information "The Prodigy" may have given "J-Lau." Florian, who trained under BJ back in 2007, took it personally when his former master went on to train an opposing fighter. Now Florian looks to complete his revenge on Team Hawaii when he gets a second bite at the championship apple against Penn at UFC 101 on August 8 in Philadelphia. Sour grapes? Or does Kenny have a legitimate gripe?

STFU already Kenny!

Penn is gonna murder this guy tko 2nd round

by Tower on Jul 20, 2009 12:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

As I was reading this I was think the same thing. STFU Kenny. I actually like Kenny, but get some new material.

Anybody who is picking Kenny is an obvious BJ hater. If you look at this fight objectively there is no way Kenny can win. I am not impressed with Dean getting hurt, running from Huerta, and Joe making a rookie mistake for your road to a 2nd title shot. BJ by whatever he wants.

by BNF on Jul 20, 2009 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But the fact that he finished Stevenson faster than BJ does impress you?

I think you are ignorant if you say there is “no way” Kenny can win.

by WB on Jul 20, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Another witty blogger going straight for the insults… BJ destroyed Joe everywhere in that fight. Joe made a stu*id mistake and Kenny capitalized. I am much more impressed with BJ.

by BNF on Jul 20, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why would anyone complain about BJ training your opponent?…its not like J-Lau or whatever his name is was jumping out of pools or carrying rocks underwater…BJ just showed him the basics like where exactly the gym is, where the lunch room is, and where they take their naps….haha…sorry BNF, comedy comes first and foremost ;)

by McArthur on Jul 20, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL Mac. Anyway guys, what we’re watching here is Kenny trying to hype a fight. The guy isn’t exactly a trash-talker but he’s looking for reasons he can sell to the public why these guys don’t like each other. There really isn’t a lot of existing animosity there, so Kenny’s looking to create some.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 20, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mac, the comic relief is always appreciated… “where they take their naps” LOL… You know he does sleep in one of those high altitude bags.

Kenny finished joe faster, and bj finished sherk (i wouldnt say faster since Florian was never in that fight huh) SO WHAT!!!! And who finished Din faster??? your stats mean nothing, except to show your rediculous outlook on this sport. BJ BJ BJ!!!

by ( (Adam G) ) on Jul 20, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

brendan, you know as well as anybody that the hatered BJ brings out in people clouds their judgement. Where is Kenny better?

by BNF on Jul 20, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that is a dumb statement. People can pick Kenny and not be a BJ hater..

With that said, Kenny is going down. BJ isn’t allowed to train Joe? lol. This isn’t like dating. BJ didn’t cheat on him.

BJ is focused and hungry.

And he isn’t fighting a super athlete from canada with takedowns that come from the heavens.

BJ by domination.

Seriously though, how good is GSP. GSP could probably beat anderson. I wouldn’t have said that until I saw him demolish the 3 best guys who could fight at 170. He has hardly lost seconds of any of those fights. wow. respect. Sorry for picking BJ to beat GSP.

AdamG’s right…MMA math doesn’t work. Kenny’s isn’t better anywhere imo…in fact, Kenny’s nerves might play a role in this fight…he’s been in big fights but not as big as the fights BJ has been in…throw in Silva/Forest and the first fights in Philly and that place will be going nuts…not sure if Kenny will be ready to comprehend the fact that its EXTREMELY hard to hurt BJ…hellbows or not I just don’t see how Kenny can win

by McArthur on Jul 20, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

its alright Bennie…no need for apoligies…

by McArthur on Jul 20, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess the one question I have to ask guys who use BJ’s performance against GSP as a reason he will lose to Kenny is: how would Kenny have fared against GSP?

I’m thinking worse. I’m thinking he’s done WELL before the fourth round.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 20, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m on fire today. I got called dumb and ignorant in the same thread. :)

Kenny fans should be realistic. They know BJ is going to win and so does Kenny.

by BNF on Jul 20, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

for sure…I don’t like to use past fights to set bars for future fights…ya know how sometimes Bugs Bunny used to tied knots into the end of Elmer Fudd’s gun?? Thats how Kenny would have looked after about 90seconds into any fight he were to have with GSP

by McArthur on Jul 20, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Benny that is purely ridiculous though… I respect everyone’s opinion as long as the opinion isn’t that GSP could beat Anderson. Thats preposterous. I will go to blows defending my stance on this to anyone. Really? I mean come on… Anderson is bigger and faster… GSP will take him down.. and then Anderson will triangle him and elbow him into submission. The only thing worse than standing with Anderson Silva is taking him to the ground. Even if you manage to hold him down for the round A) you won’t inflict any damage on him and B) he will come out the next round angry and the only thing worse than an angry Anderson is maybe an angry 6,000 lb bear with razor claws, standing 70 feet tall that breathes fire and has a penchant for raping people… or maybe an angry nuclear bomb… GSP even knows it.. All the fans want it and he’s been dodging it nonstop.

Word to that Spooner… Good post.

by BNF on Jul 20, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am being realistic BNF! You saying “there is no way Kenny can win the fight” is not being realistic in my opinion.

Is BJ more talented? No question. And I realize MMA Math is non-conclusive, but I am positive that Kenny will have a very smart game plan going into this fight – as opposed to BJ who thinks he will just cruise by on natural ability (which he very may well).

And ((Adam G)) your insults mean nothing to me when it comes to this subject, everyone knows your the biggest BJ nuthugger out there!! Haha, but my arguement wasnt MMA Math based (although it probably came off like that) it was just saying I do not agree with someone saying “there is no way Kenny wins the fight”.

by WB on Jul 20, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What is going to win the fight for Kenny are intangibles- he won’t quit when the going gets tough and he won’t gas out in the championship rounds ala BJ Penn. But don’t worry, if BJ loses he can say his Mom made him rest so he wouldn’t get overtrained.

by Wes on Jul 20, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

WB, realistically I don’t see any part of Kenny’s game that is better than BJ. Kenny is very good, but not on BJ’s level. No one can tell me where Kenny will win. Wes best answer is the intagables. That is a convenient answer. When you give that answer you are admitting that Kenny has no physcial tools that are better than BJ’s. Then he shows his true colors as a BJ hater. Which takes us back to my original statement in which I meant to say that all the BJ haters will pick Kenny to win regardless of the facts or logic.

by BNF on Jul 20, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not true at all. BJ is an unbeleivable athlete, I’ll not deny it. But talent can only take you so far. That’s my point. He lacks these intrinsic qualities that limit him to being just a world class fighter rather than an all-time great. His record really isn’t that great and he lost to Hughes and GSP by being poorly conditioned and a quitter or a little of both. And by the way I used to be a BJ fan until I he talked some much crap before the GSP fight then blamed evryone and their brother for his loss instead of admitting that he just lost.

by Wes on Jul 20, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Elbows BNF!! Kenny has better elbows!!

Haha, but seriously. I am extremely confident in the fact that Kenny knows that he does not have as much natural ability as BJ and knows he has to fight a perfectly executed game plan to win this fight.

So to name 3 things Kenny has an advantage in: cardio, patience, and mental strength/game planning. I dont see Kenny veering from a game plan that he has created and he will be patient enough to not get flusterd if BJ catches him with an early flurry. Like I said before though, BJ might not need a game plan to win.

by WB on Jul 20, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wish Kenny would win. I doubt it will happen though, I know BJ has the advantage in all aspects of this fight. Man, I hate BJ Penn.

by jay on Jul 20, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, BNF, I think what Wes was saying is that BJ dosen’t have the mental toughness that Kenny does. He talks a lot of s#*t that he can’t always back up; your typical bully mentality. And when someone stands up to him and fights bac or a fight starts getting tough he tends to quit fighting. Plus his conditioning isn’t exactly top notch. Never has been. You cannot dispute these statements. It’s a fact.

by Rich on Jul 20, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh yes, the Hellbows. LOL. Good post WB, but like the old saying goes, everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.

by BNF on Jul 20, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks Wes but let me handle this- BNF, BJ lacks things such as desire otherwise he would train harder so he dosen’t gas out all the time and he would keep fighting and not quit in the corner because the fight wasn’t going how he claimed it was going to go- he’s a quitter. Dosen’t matter how talented you are on paper. Intangibles are the intrinsic qualities that BJ lacks- the difference between being really good and really great. Talent willonly take you so far. Sometimes a fighter with limited talent like Kenny can beat a guy like BJ with loads of talent but lacks heart and mental toughness. He can’t push himself when things start gettinn rough.

by Wes on Jul 20, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I believe the intangibles work in BJ’s favor. Such as coming off a bad loss and looking for redemption, confidence that he is the best 155er on the planet and Kenny’s lack of confidence knowing he is in over his head agaisn’t the best.

I cant possibly see how Kenny can win this fight. where would he beat BJ at? He wont KO BJ. He wont make him quit with GSP’like GNP, and NO ONE is submitting BJ.
I dont like kenny florian when he opens his mouth, but I love seeing him fight because he is top shelf, but I cant see how he could possibly beat BJ Penn!

BJ is too proud, and after being chumped in his last fight….POOR KENNY IS GETTING TKO’ed, EARLY!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jul 20, 2009 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

amazing john g you dont think kenny has advantages? his muay thai has improved increredibly, his footwork is great, i believe he has a big reach advantage, he has much better kicking game than bj. i think his overall standup is much better than bj, who just has boxing, and doesnt even use kicks. i see kenny picking him apart standing, bj getting frustrated, and kennys training with gsp will help with his wrestling tremendiously where he can keep bj guessing with takedowns, and make bj even more hesitant with his standup. People will be suprised that bj wont win more than a single round. kenny by pure domination, wont even be a close fight, and bj retires afterwards.

by dtoto on Jul 20, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You dont have to try to sell me on what Kenny is good at..I think the world of him as a fighter, but I just so happen to think that there isnt a light heavyweight fighter alive that can beat BJ Penn standing. His boxing and the way he slithers in and out of range is second to NONE! What seperates BJ from other LIGHTWEIGHTS is overall toughness. I think hands down he is the toughest lightweight out there. As good as Kenny’s stand up is, stand up is all about damage, which is a ratio between damage inflicted, and damage absorbed. BJ INFLICTS the more damage, and he absorbs the less damage…so CLEAR ADVANTAGE BJ!

The fact that you says bJ retires in your last line, is a clear indication that you arent rational when it comes to BJ so I am really kid of pissed that I am wasting this time writing to you, but I already started so I will try to talk some sense into a clearly misguided bj hater.

The fact that you seem to think that Kenny training with BJ is going to suddenly make Kenny able to out wrestle Penn is the silliest thing alive. GSP is a skillfull, and muscular Machine…as good as Kenny is, lets call a spade a SPADE, KENNY is a technically above average, tough nerd…BJ is a born fighter with skills to back him up, amazing toughness, and unmatched talent!

Only way this fight goes to the ground is when bj decides to take kenny down, and pound him out till the choke is sunk in!

by JOhn G on Jul 20, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with some of Dtoto’s and John G’s comments. Kenny is much better than guys are giving him credit for. Kenny is now a lot stronger than he looks, his skills and cardio have progress to an elite level, and he is one best mentally prepared fighters I have ever seen. BJ is still the best 155lbr in the world, but I’m not sure if his mindset is healthy after that fight with GSP. I don’t hear of BJ training with a camp that has training partners that challenge him. Florian is going to give BJ all the trouble he can handle with a Forrest Griffin workman like style.

BJ has lost to GSP and Machida. Big deal. Oh yeah and Matt Hughes who also beat GSP during that time. GSP is pretty good.

yeah right, you seem to rationalize all of florians wins, and not give him credit. If you think bj is going to win more than 1 round against kenny, you are on crack. Cant wait 3 more weeks and we will have a new LW champion and never have to hear about bj again.

BJ coached Joe on the ultimate fighter season five. He told all the guys he coached on the show that he would help them train for any future fight. Of course he helped Joe train for the biggest fight of his career.

by Kdog on Jul 20, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m picking KFlo and it is not because I’m a hater of BJ or his mother. BJ has not fought against an intelligent fighter ever other than GSP as all the other knuckleheads came in with the same game plan BJ does; decide when you walk in the ring.

KFlo has some serious skills; Penn has those too and also has good power for 155. Kenny has just a bit more to offer and I know he will stay away from Penn’s strengths and I predict a submission win in Rd 3.

There is no point in comparing each fighter against their previous battles as each day in the ring is different. What needs to be considered is whether the fighter is stagnating or improving and one fighter has not developed their skills as much as the other has. BJ has not had any interest in increasing his skills given who he has fought against. Seriously – Joe Stevenson as a contender?? Or Jens Pulver?? Those fights are on par as these – A Silva vs Leban, Lesnar against Sokoudjou, or GSP fight Swick.

KFlo is taking this on serously and will come out on top. Anyone willing to wager something on this? No takers were there for the GSP – Alves tilt which I called out the complete and utter domination. Submission in the 3rd round (first round will go to Penn, second to KFlo, and then the win in the third).

I agree that you do not have to be a hater to pick K-Flow. That being said I am a MUCH MUCH MUCH bigger Florian fan and yes STFU but I see Penn taking this one IF he doesn’t over train hahaha. But seriously Kenny can be smart like GSP and wear on BJ and gas him or pour olive oil all over his body so BJ can’t get a handle lol.

While I have and always will pick BJ against anyone… I still kinda like Kenny if it wasn’t for his back and forth bs… he goes on a campaign saying he finishes fights and who wants to see fights finished and all that trash and then he dodges Huerta the whole time. I liked Florian until that exact moment.

by Sp00ner1234 on Jul 20, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it kinda bugged me too but remember that Kenny was already the top contender before Huerta and fought him to “stay sharp”…he beat him, THEN fought Joe just to “stay sharp”. He’s waited a long time for BJ and I give him props for not being satisfied in limbo

Smart, but boring and contradictory to Kenny “I finish fights” Florian’s supposed “style”.

by BNF on Jul 20, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

my thoughts exactly…he was pretty much guarenteed a title shot though and seemed to be fighting that fight in particular not to lose…he finished Joe though and didn’t even need to fight him to keep his title shot so I’ll give him props for that

by McArthur on Jul 20, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thank you BNF. thats what I meant. I don’t mean that being “elusive” isn’t a great way to fight. You eliminate any damage from your opponent while inflicting as much damage as possible while pointing your way to a decision… its just completely contradictory to all the shit he talked before hand… also its a really gay way to fight and I am glad Machida changed it up a little.

by Sp00ner1234 on Jul 20, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kenny’s won 9 or 10 fights in UFC, and Huerta was the only one he didn’t finish, so it’s really not fair to hold one decision against a really tough opponent against him.

by PW on Jul 20, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Think of it this way, no matter what youre still going to look at film, your still going to know your own weaknesses and theirs. Still going to have full knowledge of strengths. In football you watch film to get an upper hand, people bring in outsiders that may have coached the opposition at one point. Stop worrying about their camp and what their doing. Watch your film, listen to your coaches, and train for your fight not his.

Sour grapes I say, but Kenny did fine against Lauzon and will do just fine against BJ. KEVIN, What is up with capital grille on the 7th? Are we seriously considering this place? I have been there a few times and 1. it ain’t cheap by any means, 2. shirt and tie are normally required 3. fancy date nightesque place. Don’t anybody forget about raw lounge on sansom from 9-2. by PW on Jul 20, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

nobody said it was motorized

by McArthur on Jul 20, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know where you live PW… you don’t want the Lashley War wagon at your front door… OK I will admit it is not exactly a wagon. Its just a two door toyota with a broken front bumper and mismatched headlights. Its picking up steam though. And you don’t wanna get hit by it because it has purple heart plates on the front and I’m driving without a license

by Sp00ner1234 on Jul 20, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can’t go if you don’t have a licence

by McArthur on Jul 20, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

what about a temporary permit until Lashley wins against a real competitor and then my dad won’t have to go with us anymore and we can smoke pot and pick up high school chicks?

by Sp00ner1234 on Jul 20, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess Lesnar doesn’t have a wagon anymore either. It’s more of a 4-wheeler with a couple shotguns, a couple crossbows and a cooler full of Coors Light . . . that’s Coors Light, on the back of it.

by PW on Jul 20, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

don’t forget a naked Sable strapped to the front so he can get on top of her.

My other comment is stuck in moderation but just don’t tell your mom i don’t have my license yet Mac. My mom will lie to her about it. She’s cool. She smokes pot

Kenny is either making this up to hype the fight a little or if he really takes it personal then he is a baby.

There he goes again….always looking like a douchebag.

wtf! kenny is talking too much. I’m a big fan but he needs to stfu and just train and be ready to fight. I hope he beats bj cuz I hate that bitch. but florian needs stop this lame sh*t talkin.

by TRIKZ on Jul 20, 2009 12:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Joe was already working with BJ before he signed on to fight Kenny. I think it’s just fight hype, probably nothing behind any of it. BJ takes this fight by outclassing Kenny in all areas.

by Archer0545 on Jul 20, 2009 12:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I love Jesse’s threads with his unique outlook and flare.

Ummm, I’m not drinking the kool aide, but I think Kenny might have a shot against BJ. Kenny has gotten much bigger and stronger in recent years, coupled with an obvious improvement in his striking. I think he would have a decent shot against almost anyone in the LHW division.

Im not picking Kenny, cause a BJ that is focused would be a scarey thing (have we actually seen a focused BJ Penn yet?) But I see BJ trying to prove a point by beating Kenny, and by trying to prove that point he is going to continue to stand – who knows how its gonna go.

by Luppers on Jul 20, 2009 1:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i think u mean lw division.

Strange comments from Kenny, though I can understand being annoyed at a former training partner helping your opponent. However Lauzon was on Team Penn on TUF so it’s no wonder that he was helped by BJ for the biggest fight of his career.

Saying that, anyone who overlooks Kenny for this fight is an idiot, he has constantly outclassed opponents who he was expected to lose to and is a much better fighter than the Ken-Flo who was beaten by Sherk. Other than Diego, Kenny is the only LW who will give BJ a competetive fight (Edgar is too small and on the off chance that Gray fights BJ, he is too one dimensional to beat him) and BJ’s recent antics and comments have me worried for his chances. It should be an excellent fight and I wouldn’t be suprised if Kenny wins this.

by David W-S on Jul 20, 2009 1:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wasn’t Lauzon training with Penn before that match up was made?
He went straight there after tuf 5 didn’t he?

Hope Florian wins though.

Florian’s a class act who doesn’t talk smack. As a martial artist, I can say that I would also be insulted if my friend and former mentor trained someone else to compete against me in a fight — especially if they didn’t ask me first.

This is going to be a much more competitive fight than everyone thinks.

BJ by KO in the second. Or Ken Flo by TKO in the third.

by whatev on Jul 20, 2009 3:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Kenny doensnt have gsp strength, nowhere near.
Gsp couldn’t put bj away, he had to quit
But kenny won’t rough him up like gsp
Kenny hasn’t felt a punch like bjs
Only diegos on the ground and for kenny to take bj down haha. What a laugh

by phenomenal angel on Jul 20, 2009 4:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Other than Din Thomas who has BJ knocked out with a punch?

by Rich on Jul 20, 2009 4:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He didn’t KO Thomas, he choked him.

by PW on Jul 20, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nope, he TKO’d him with a knee followed by ground strikes, P-dubs.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 20, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huh, I thought he beat him down after his knee popped, then choked him out.

by PW on Jul 20, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kenny did do that bro, but the question is about BJ . . . Remember his Knee to Din’s chops?

by ( (Adam G) ) on Jul 20, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And according to Sherdog I was right Bitches!!!! I am the knower of all things Ken-Flo!

I got it straight now. Dude, I’ve totally been drinking at work or something.

by PW on Jul 20, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ummmmmm . . . . Coal Uno, Sean Sherk, Din was a Knee and a punch to finish him off on the ground id say, Ask Hughes if in their first fight he was basically KO’d while the RNC was taking place. Joe Stevenson was dropped and rocked within 8 seconds, BJ broke GSP’s face, Rocked Hughes in their second fight through the standup with Matt showing his “OOHH face” twice, Gomi was a mess, Rodrigo Gracie got rocked in the 2nd and 3rd at 185 lbs, Who could recognize Stevenson only 9 minutes into their scheduled 25 minute bout? Gilbert was a TKO due to strikes. Not even Ali KO’d everyone bro, Florian hasnt KO’d ANYONE including Thomas/Sherk, right?? BJ’s striking is not the debate here i know, i just thought id help you recognize his skills a litle more. But to answer your question; Uno (former UFC co-#1 contender at 155 lbs) and Sherk (former UFC Champion at 155 lbs) Plus you already said Thomas so yea.

by ( (Adam G) ) on Jul 20, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dunno if you know anything about BJ adam…

by Sp00ner1234 on Jul 20, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so ive checked into his backround once or twice = )

by ( (Adam G) ) on Jul 20, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

kenny is a much more technical striker than bj although bj has more power on the feet i think kenny can stay on the outside and land effective strikes to wear bj down on the ground i give bj the edge so for me its really a toss up
by the way i have met bj penn twice he is even a bigger douchebag in person

by the boss on Jul 20, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Kenny is a more technical KICKBOXER than BJ. BJ’s hands are way better than Kenny’s though.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 20, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree…however technicality, (if thats a word) is easier to train for then someone like BJ who fights with instinct

by McArthur on Jul 20, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

don’t forget that BJ’s reset button as it were..is slow..like ol’ georges pointed out..so if you fake him..he reacts quickly to that ..then boom..give him something sneaky…worked like a charm on him..well, seemed to!

by sarah on Jul 20, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Florian is resilient and ready for the fight of his life. No way I’m picking him over BJ, but if he can survive the first round without getting beat up, he could push this thing to a place where his conditioning and determination can pay dividends. Maybe he will frustrate BJ by not going away and will score points by staying busy. His only way to win, IMO, would be by decision or cut stoppage. Just can not picture him TKOing Penn (forget about KO- no chance in hell).

The bigger question is how fired up is BJ gonna be and will he come out and just run over Florian? He needs a huge dominant win right now to erase the bummer of the GSP fight. Don’t think Kenny is gonna make it easy for him, but it’s all up to what game BJ brings. If it’s his A game, then Kenny is in for a rude awakening. Anything less, though, and the fight will be close.

by revjames13 on Jul 20, 2009 4:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I always like your analysis, Rev. Nobody dislikes BJ Penn more than me, but having said that, I think it incredibly unlikely that Penn loses this fight. KenFlo is a quality fighter, but I think he’s out of his league with BJ.

by BigRedOne on Jul 20, 2009 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s right Rev conditioning and determination is what is going to win it for Kenny.

by Wes on Jul 20, 2009 4:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

kenny is way overrated

gimme 3 weeks

B.J sucks (Andy) Wang. End of story.

by elltwilightiott on Jul 20, 2009 10:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

its funny how everybody talks about bj’s motivation when he wins they all say bj trained hard and was super hyped for this fight when he loses they say he slacked off and was unmotivated for the fight. if bj penn really did slack off and thought he was going to walk through gsp then he is a idiot and kenny should take him apart

by the boss on Jul 21, 2009 2:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I for one like Kenny’s chances. I think if he can take it into the later rounds he’ll start picking a tired Bj apart, and finish him with some nasty hellbows late in the 4th early 5th.

WAR KENFLO!!
