Georges St. Pierre groin injury will not require surgery

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre will not require surgery for the groin injury that he suffered during his successful five-round title defense against Thiago Alves at UFC 100 on July 11, according to Sherdog.com.
The report indicates that "Rush" will be back training "within a few weeks after a brief rehabilitation."
St. Pierre solidified his place among the pound-for-pound best by completely dominating "The Pitbull" for 25 minutes, nullifying his dangerous striking attack with a mix of speed, wrestling and ground and pound. The win snapped Alves' seven-fight win streak, who simply could not get anything going during the match because of St. Pierre's super skill and gameplan.
Things could have possibly been worse for the American Top Team (ATT) product if St. Pierre was full strength for the entire bout -- he believes the injury occurred in the third round when attempting and armbar submission.
He was clearly in pain when all as said and done, wincing in pain and revealing that he heard the abductor ligament pop. The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) slapped him with a stiff medical suspension that could last until Jan. 8, 2010, unless he's cleared by orthopedic doctor beforehand.
Rest assured he will likely return to action much sooner based on this latest update.
St. Pierre is scheduled to fight the winner of the 170-pound showdown between Mike Swick and Martin Kampmann at UFC 103 from American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19. That would mean St. Pierre would be ready to return to action for the promotion's signature year-end blockbuster pay-per-view (PPV) event sometime in mid to late December.

they should just sideline GSP for a year, let him get healthy, and put on weight while he coaches the next season of TUF. when thats done he can make his middleweight debut against Alan Belcher!

Has GSP really wiped out this division so badly that there is a possibility that Swick might have a title shot??? Wow, who’da thunk it?
by chefdaddy on Jul 19, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions
No kidding. Swick gets a title shot.
You have to think GSP will eventually lose to a nobody because he will keep fighting chumps and get bored.

I would rather GSP stay at WW and defend, then to go up and get smashed by Anderson. After GSP deals with the Swick/Martin winner, there are still some ‘up and comers’ that could work their way up and give GSP a good fight(ie, Rumble)..
Also there are still some great WW’s outside the UFC that would give Georges a good fight. I think it’s only a matter of time before Jake Shields gets signed. Nick Diaz and Mach Sakurai would also be good fights, but I don’t see Diaz returning to the cage.

Once GSP KOs or submits Swick, he will legally own AKA.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 19, 2009 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Fuck it! I say he already owns AKA. Swick would NEVER last all 5 with Georges like Kos and Fitch did. IMO- Fitch and Kos are both harder fights then ‘Quick Swick’.. I’m already writing Swick off in this one, but yeah, ‘Once GSP KOs or subs Swick’, he WILL definitely OWN AKA! Maybe these fools will finally fight eachother?
by Stagger-Lee on Jul 19, 2009 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah, I agree! AKA is GSP’s bitch! I have NO INTEREST IN SEEING GSP?SWICK. It will be the same ol story, GSP not wanting to stand with swick, gets the takedown…and puts on a technical G N P ground clinic on Swicks ass.
I wouldnt even order any ppv headlined by GSP vs. Swick because that fight isnt the least bit competitive!
Not so sure how much better Kampman would do
by JOhn G on Jul 19, 2009 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Chances are GSP/Swick will be on the big year-end card, so maybe Penn/Sanchez and some other big fights will be on it as well.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 19, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Kos only went three with GSP. His was a non-title fight.
by PW on Jul 19, 2009 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions
I never understood why fighters feel like they have to move up or down, to get better competition? Whenever you face another fighter there is always a risk…why not stay at WW for your entire career and make an all time record of title defenses…it wasn’t too long ago that GSP was tapping to Hughes and Serra, he is not unbeatable…no other sport does this, number one tennis player doesn’t face 2 people at once or play with one leg, the best football team in the NFL doesn’t take away 2 players to make it more fair, why should GSP be any different, how many title defenses does he have a total of 2!!!! wow, why not go for 8-10? Just my thoughts.

He might get bored & pull an Anderson Silva & just play around with cats in the octagon.

I’d love to see Condit/Hardy in December too if they can both win their next fights against Lytle/Hughes respectively…the year end show stands to be better than 100 imo…timing should permit a LW, WW, MW, and HW title fight…probably too soon to see another LHW title fight this year though

by COlin D on Jul 19, 2009 1:54 PM EDT reply actions
As long as GSP fights who the UFC says is the number one contender, he’ll go down as the best WW ever. It would suck if his next 2 or 3 wins are against “B Team” fighters, but at least it wouldn’t be like boxing where so called champs duck legit contenders to pad their records. Besides, sooner or later someone will come along who can actually challenge GSP. Let’s face it, Alves and others may be totally different fighters in 12-18 months. GSP may even become complacent, although I doubt it. Regardless, as long as he fights who UFC puts in front of him, no one can question the legitimacy of his belt. That said, if 12 months from now GSP has 2 or 3 more wins under his belt and no serious challenge before him, I’d say that the UFC will have to make something happen with The Spider or some other MW. WAR GSP!

by king criminales on Jul 19, 2009 3:12 PM EDT reply actions
Just rub sum grease on it! He shouldn’t move up in weight class until he starts finishing fights at his own weight class. Kos, Fitch, and Alves all have taken him the distance and survived a 5 round LnP fest.
by xxBAxx816 on Jul 19, 2009 4:01 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah right, lay n pray- that’s some nasty lay n pray when you can mess up dudes faces like he did BJ’s. He looked pretty grotesque after the fight Alves and Fitch too. Don’t say such stupid things man you really show ypur ignorance.
by Rich on Jul 19, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t care what people look like after fights. It’s about finishing fights and a top p4per should be able to do so against top tier competition. Shut your mouth and continue to suckle Kimbo’s nutz you f*ckin nooob.
by xxBAxx816 on Jul 20, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Whoa, so you must think Anderson is a piece of crap, he hasnt finished anyone in his past 2 fights, while GSP did stop BJ 2 fights ago.
Meaning Brock is p4p champ! Since capturing the belt, he is on a fight finishing roll!!! UNSTOPPABLE.
Someone fitting in the words, Kimbo, nutz and noob all in the same sentence is an absolute idiot. Go troll elsewhere, kimbo nut noob.
by Big D on Jul 21, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Swick is no joke, but he’s not going to be able to keep GSP from taking him down. kampman is good all around, but his chin is suspect and he doesn’t have that many ways to win.
GSP would probably beat A. Silva. He would take him down, then anderson would get up, then GSP would take him down again and again. By the third round you will see a bruised A. Silva on his back in desperation.
by spitforce on Jul 19, 2009 4:38 PM EDT reply actions
I am so sick of hearing about his abductor when it’s his adductor. It’s like saying you blew off your left arm when it really was your right arm.
by Ertz on Jul 19, 2009 5:25 PM EDT reply actions
One name to think about in the WLWT class for GSP . . . Anthony Johnson (with a fight or two more on his resume), now theres a fight!!!
by ( (Adam G) ) on Jul 19, 2009 5:47 PM EDT reply actions
NOT a fight at ALL, imo.
He’ll get murdered on the ground, CONSTANT takedowns! idc if he has a “background” in wrestling GSP constantly takes down guys like BJ, Fitch, Hughes, Trigg, Sherk, and KOS (who is the BEST PURE wrestler to ever grace the UFC, too bad he doesn’t effing use it anymore).
NOT to mention i DEF think rumble would LOSE, badly, the stand-up war!
Plus wWILL get outclassed in the JITZ section as well!
i THINK GSP should take 6-7 MONTHS off, heal up, COACH TUF against A. Silva, put on the weight properly, and DEBUT at 185 at the END of the show in e MEGA fight!
Theres just NOTHING left for him in the UFC WW division!
:)

by TheDragon on Jul 19, 2009 6:13 PM EDT reply actions
It’s too bad people are thinking Kampmann and Swick are jokes. Both guys were top rated, successful middleweights. They also have dynamic stand up and have length. I’m not sure if either can stop GSP’s takedowns. Kampmann seems like he has enough Jiu Jitsu to threaten from the bottom or escape. Not sure about Swick. GSP is my favorite fighter and I would still favor him, but I think that either Kampmann or Swick are in the same caliber as Alves, Fitch and Penn(at 170).
by RedRavi7 on Jul 19, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions
lets put it this way redravi, swick and kampaman may not be jokes, but gsp basicaly schools marquardt and rashad evans when they spar, so imagine what he would do to kapman, or swick. marquardt pretty much toyed with kapman when they last fought and force him to move down.
by dtoto on Jul 20, 2009 3:12 AM EDT up reply actions
Sure, GSP trains with Marquardt, Evans, Jardine, etc, and I’m sure he gets the better of them a lot of times, but I wouldn’t say he necessarily owns them.
These 2 guys have good credentials Kampmann beat a powerhouse in McFedries with a slick arm triangle and beat a top MW challenger in Leites. Swick’s lightning fast KO’s and Swickatine are well known.
People have been saying that Alves was the best striker GSP has faced, and that is a style that would challenge him. While Kampmann/Swick’s styles are different than Alves, I think they are as accomplished in striking.
by RedRavi7 on Jul 20, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Finally! Someone who can make sense. This is the fight game boys, 2 men, 1 will win. Is GSP the favorite? Absolutely. Can Swick KO him? Absolutely. Don’t sleep on either of these guys, the are not ‘B’ level or whatever stupid thing I’ve been reading. They or both world class fighters, and Joe Silva seems to think so too.
by theCloser on Jul 20, 2009 4:50 AM EDT up reply actions
Totally, So overrated. Would get blasted out quick by Lesnar. Short, fat bald guy, how good could he really be. He has beaten over the hill, soft chinned UFC has beens. Cro Cop and Nog were the only fighters he beat in their primes that were any good everyone else has basically sucked Sylvia and Arlovski- UFC has beens, flash in the pans.
by Rich on Jul 19, 2009 6:33 PM EDT reply actions
GSP is a great champioship. Don’t see anyone who’ll be able to challenge him at welterweight.

by dtoto on Jul 20, 2009 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed. The Mercer and Rodgers knockouts of Sylvia and Arlovski definitely take away from Fedor’s swifty defeats of them. I like Fedor’s chances in the UFC, but by no means would he sustain his streak, he’d run into a couple of brick walls.

i DO NOT want to see GSP fight anymore WW’s!!!!
The last 2 fights from GSP were boring and showed that he neds to improve to finish his fights earlier not go 5 rounds. Props to anyone that last 5 rounds with GSP, Fitch and ALves, but come one DO you maniacs REALLY thinnk any one else poses a "real"threat to GSP .
Certainly not Swick or KAmpman come on ufc GSP needs to move up in weight.
Just like Chuck’s career they tossed chuck a handful of grapplers whom he could ko easily to make a winner, it’s almost like setting up GSP to just win i won’t be watching GSP vs any WW he needs to move up.
Why not post a tread to a ? like this

Like Chuck’s career?
GSP has faced the ABSOLUTE BEST wrestlers (Trigg, Sherk, Hughes, Fitch, KOS) and the ABSOLUTE BEST strikers (Alves, Penn) and the ABSOLUTE BEST jitz guys (Serra, Penn, Karo, etc.) that the UFC has to offer!

by hddavidson on Jul 20, 2009 6:17 AM EDT up reply actions
If he beats Swick or Kampman then the only person left that poses a serious threat is Anthony Johnson. As far as I am concerned, they will ALL have to be beaten before the division is “cleaned out”. Personally I don’t think its a problem having a guy at the top of the pile that is “unbeatable”, that’s the whole point in being a champion. Keep GSP at WW and let him rule with an iron fist.
