I give Forrest a better chance than most, but how would he finish Silva??? The only way I would think he could is by decision…Should be a pretty good fight though. Forrest could be “the one”.

by randy murders on Jul 19, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I would love to see Forrest pull it off, but that’s not a reasonable thing to expect.

You have the best counter-striker in the world facing a guy loves to stay on his feet and play the aggressor, but has no KO power. It’s a terrible matchup IMO.

I need to look at their stat’s. I don’t know if Forrest’s size and length is going to help him very much.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 19, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I can’t come to terms with it being “unreasonable” …he stands a chance with size and length albeit a small chance but a bigger chance than either of Silva’s past 3-4 opponents

by McArthur on Jul 19, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

you are at terms with it. You think he has a “small” chance which means you agree that it’s unreasonable to expect to expect Forrest to win. I’ saying it’s unreasonable “to expect Forest to win” not impossible. In fact, I don’t dismiss people’s gut instincts. If someone has a strong feeling, go with it. I’m just saying if you look at it with strict logic, you have to conclude that Forrest is unlikely to win.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 19, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

The most interesting thing to me is trying to look at it from Forrest’s point of view. If you’re in his shoes and you’re studying the tape, what would you see? You would primarily see aggressive strikers getting picked apart. Then you’d see a few guys hanging back, but inflicting no damage. I would think Forrest would want to try to inflict damage from a distance and be sure to move after every strike or combo.

I don’t think Forrest has a better chance than his last 3-4 opponents. At least some of those guys had that one big shot capability. Forrest has to execute a perfect game plan for 15 minutes.

Having said all that, I hope Forrest shocks the hell out of me.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 19, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

good posts Ovaries. I dont know what the hell Forrests gameplan is going to be going into this fight. I think this is a really bad match up for Forrest. only way Forrest can win this fight IMO, is by making it boring, pushing Anderson against the cage and dry humping him standing up a la Tim sylvia, or take Anderson down and smother him….and even that scenario isnt very likely.

Looking forward to seeing Forrest get brutally Ko’ed!

by JOhn G on Jul 19, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

This fight is all about fixing Silva’s image after his last two fights. Dana expects Forrest to go in there head first and get killed. He’s too likeable to really damage his stock with his loss and they have one more reason to push A Silva as the best ever seeing how he’ll be the only person in MMA history with top 10 wins across three weight classes.

by NameNotRequired on Jul 19, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Forrest has to move all the time, use his hands and keep his distance.. Rich Franklin was doing good when he did that, but once he let Silva come in on him it was over..

by RoB on Jul 19, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

John,

You remind me of something I was thinking during the Couture vs Gonzaga fight: Greco-Roman might be the perfect tool to beat A. Silva. Let’s see Couture vs Silva at 205. That would be incredible.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 19, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

What Forrest needs to so is work takedowns and GnP. Standing up he will be bludgeoned to death. He doesn’t have the hand-speed or the power to effectively implement any kickboxing strategy against Anderson.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 19, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

so forrest’s game plan is that hes not going to beat himself? well thats refreshing to hear…

by brendan on Jul 19, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m a Forrest fan but it’s tough to see how he can beat Silva. Forrest is likely to weigh 10-15 pds heavier than Silva at fight time, but the strength advantage may still be Silva’s. Rich Franklin has said many times that he couldn’t believe how powerful Silva was in close quarters. This fight is potentially a one-sided beatdown, but I’m still looking forward to it to see if Forrest can hang, and to see if Silva can be forced to up his intensity level.

by CL on Jul 19, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I have to admit…mismatch or not, I’m still stoked to watch it.

This is one of the most anticipated fights of the year for me. Right up there with GSP/Alves and Fedor/Barnett – and hopefully Penn/Sanchez, Lesnar/Carwin and Machida/Rampage.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 19, 2009 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Forrest will get KO’d by the 2nd rnd he just doesn’t have the speed of sliva and size wont’ be much of an issue, Anderson frame is solid at 205lbs.

by DAVE A on Jul 20, 2009 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

i agree the only LHW that can beaT ANDERSON is machida, anyone else anderson is going to toy with them. forrest is a very good fighter, former champion but anderson will make him look silly.

by dtoto on Jul 19, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

your not alone allamerican…I for one feel it would be the best thing that could happen to Silva…haha, well maybe not the best thing but a loss could def make him a tad more vicious and a little less fu*ck-around-ish…at least its not for any title so maybe he’ll let his hair down a bit

by McArthur on Jul 19, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

At the very least, Forrest won’t let him dance around and bore people again.

BTW, I want BJ’s belt too.

by PW on Jul 19, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

If Forrest stands with Silva to long hes gonna get knocked on his as and possibly out cold, look what happened to James Irvin.Nd I dont think Forrest size is gonna make a huge factor in the clinch becuz Andersons a big guy when he goes up to lhw.Look at how he dorphed Irvin in his deput. They looked like the wear in different weight classes.Forrest is gona get finished, unless he can somehow out wrestle Andy and stay out of his submissions.Nd thats the way the cookie crumbles.

by The Legacy on Jul 19, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Forrest is gonna get killed. WAR anderson silva.

p.s. GSP is a puss. BJ stepped up to fight w/out regard to his obvious weight disadvantage. Silva the same (two times now). GSP says, “I’m too small”. Waaaa, Waaaa – the baby. I’d like to see GSP try to do his gay takedown and win rounds approach with Silva. He’ll get raped.

by ShouldersBYpete on Jul 19, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

bj is the puss for making excusses after he got beat down. i didnt think gsp would get past alves. but he did and he did more than just takedown alves to win rounds. watch after the fight and compare alves and gsp’s faces. and taking down silva and gnp him sounds like a good gameplan to me after looking at the lutter fight.

by tuffguy01 on Jul 19, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

silva had 2 torn acl’s in that fight and had a double surgery right after.. he didn’t wanna back out because of the fans and he delivered

by randy murders on Jul 19, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Pete, you need to watch more fights of GSP. You obviously aren’t educated on his fight history, or are just a hater. Just because he’s used superior wrestling as of late doesn’t mean that’s his style. It means he can basically do what he wants. Over the past several years he’s dominated opponents in almost every way imaginable. He caused BJ to quit. He outwrestled Koschek and Fitch. He pounded out Serra. He knocked out Hughes and then submitted him on the rematch. What more do you want from the guy?

by Greggo on Jul 19, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s funny how all the BJ fans made excuses for BJ by saying ‘he shouldn’t have moved up in weight to fight such a bigger guy’. They are correct about that.

But now these same idiots call GSP a pussy for not immediately doing what they all admit BJ was foolish to attempt.

GSP isn’t even close to being the biggest guy in his own weight class. Fitch, Alves and Swick are as big or bigger than he is, and AJ is enormous.

by sarah on Jul 19, 2009 11:17 AM EDT reply actions

if he shoots maybe…if not it’ll need to be a huge knee to reach up that high…Forest is good in the clinch and is a scrappy dirty boxer but he’ll need to stay outside and use his jab…which might be exactly what Silva’s plan is too..tough one to call…could go either way…not a fan of Forest but props to him for takin’ this one

by McArthur on Jul 19, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I think that it would be good for the sport for Griffin to “dethrone” Silva.

by Muscle Dolphin on Jul 19, 2009 11:17 AM EDT reply actions

dethrone him as what?…this is a “superfight” and a good one at that but he’s not losin’ his “crown” in a non-title fight. The maniacs who are going are in for a treat

by McArthur on Jul 19, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Just in terms of Silva’s deserved “air of unbeatability”. Silva seems to be “coasting” somewhat and maybe a “wake-up” call will spur him to “new heights” as it did with GSP.

by Muscle Dolphin on Jul 19, 2009 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

he’s already steppin out of his weight class. the only champion unwilling to do that is GSP.

by buttcrack obama bin laden on Jul 19, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

You don’t know if GSP is unwilling to step out of his weigh class…….he’s never been asked to do it. Up until now, he’s had legitimate contenders in his own weight class that he’s been required to defend his title against. He is just now at the point where there are no logical opponents to challenge for his belt, so he may be asked to step up to 185 to fight Silva……but i sure haven’t seen or read anything saying that he’s unwilling to do this. Furthermore, GSP will beat Silva at whatever weight they decide to fight at. I’m not saying that he will knock Silva out, but i predict he will beat him. After the way he made Alves and Fitch look like amateurs, i won’t pick against GSP against anybody, not even Silva.

by kg on Jul 19, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

What a pile of bullshit. GSP haters always have to accuse find something to attack GSP with. The only champions in the history of the UFC to move up and fight in a higher weight class while they have a belt are Penn and Anderson. And Anderson’s height and skinniness at 185 make it a much more practical option for him than GSP.

‘The only champion unwilling to do that is GSP.’ LOL. GSP and every single other champion in the history of the sport. Why does GSP have to go and fight in a weight class his 5’10 frame is unsuited for? Because he’s so damn good he can beat everyone in his division? So what? Now he has to go and get knocked out by a guy 25 pounds bigger than him to make you idiots happy?

It’s too bad people can’t just appreciate GSP for what he is: the greatest WELTERWEIGHT in the world and a guy who has fought all the best and only the best for his entire lengthy UFC career.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 19, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

The two champions that have stepped out of their weight class and fought heavier opponents already had experience fighting in those divisions, Penn has fought as heavy as 190lbs against Lyoto Machida, and he lost that fight by decision. The excuse that GSP was “bigger” than Penn is nothing but a lame ass excuse. Silva fought at 205 in Pride and never had any problems with that.

This isn’t directed at you Jeremy, just supporting your post.

by RED on Jul 19, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

The two champs that did move up in weight to fight have experience fighting at those higher weights. Penn has fought as high as 190 against Lyoto and Silva fought 205 in Pride. Those two moving up to fight is not surprising.

by RED on Jul 19, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions

GSP has NEVER fought at 185. He said he needs some time to put on some weight, nothing wrong with that.

Personally I think GSP – Silva when it happens will be a GREAT fight.

by WB on Jul 19, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

It should also be added that one of those champions who moved up in weight was a delusional and narcissistic idiot without a firm understanding of how much advantage those extra pounds really bestow. GSP probably has a firmer and more realistic grasp on his own physical limitations.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 19, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

didnt couture move up in weight?

by brendan on Jul 19, 2009 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Not when he had a title.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 20, 2009 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I think GSP and Silva should just fight at catch weight with no titles on the line. GSP wouldn’t need to get so big then and both fighters would be able to fight with pretty much nothing to lose, so they might let it go a bit more in that situation, which would make for a good fight

by ToeLock on Jul 20, 2009 3:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Forgot to say….I still think Silva would win regardless, with his striking, i dont think GSP would be so game to run in for the takedown all the time, then he’ll get KO’d

by ToeLock on Jul 20, 2009 3:18 AM EDT up reply actions

One last thing…BJ stepped up to fight GSP who isn’t big enough to make 185…GSP would be moving up to fight a the Spider who can make LHW, so there is potentially a bigger size disadvantage for GSP to make the jump.

by ToeLock on Jul 20, 2009 3:22 AM EDT up reply actions

whoa fellas, i’m not doggin’ him for it and i think he is one of the best champions of all-time. i guess i should have went more in depth. muscle dolphin was saying silva needs to wake up and be spurred to new heights like GSP. i’m sayin you can’t say silva isn’t livin up to the level of gsp when he cleared out his division, and has been fighting whoever they ask him to in a division above his. jj and red, you guys need to chill. all i was sayin is muscle dolphin acts like silva isn’t livin up to the gsp standard, when silva has pretty much set the standard for cleaning out weight classes.

Take Silva off his high horse.

If Forrest would win, what excuse would the haters use you think?

Weve seen the excuses twice before (shogun, rampage) so i wonder what will be used this time…

by Lester The Pimp on Jul 19, 2009 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

These are my 2 favorite fighters. Silva is amazing, and his accuracy is crazy. The one thing Forrest has is he has game, and never gives up. I just hope he pushes and challenges Silva. He should more than Silva’s last 2 opponents, which is the reason for this matchup in the first place. It had better be a great fight, or Silva will lose some of his luster of greatness, at least in my eyes.

I’m going Silva by ko or tko in the second round. Forrest got caught throwing a kick, which he loves to do. Silva knocked out another LHW who threw a kick inside of 90 seconds. I think Forrest brings a lot to the table, just not enough to beat Silva. Gonna love the fight no matter who wins.

I honestly don’t see how Forrest will shock the world on this one. He an amazing fighter with a tremendous work ethic but he going up against a complete and utter wrecking ball. I hope he doesn’t get banged up too bad and then we can see an Ortiz vs Griffin II.

by theonetheonly on Jul 19, 2009 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

As soon as I heard this fight was going to happen, I said “Forrest doesn’t have a chance”; and he’s my favorite fighter. Tito will never fight in the UFC again, seeing as he is with Affliction now, and Dana pretty much bans him from UFC events, hince why Tito has to have signings and watch the fights at the local Hooters. As for Lesnar fighting Anderson, that will never happen either. I think it would be a lay-down, dry-hump fest and would be boring except for occasional elbows by Anderson and hammer-fists by Brock.

But, back to the point of this discussion; Anderson by KO or TKO, because both his and Forrest’s grappling and submissions are good enough to not get caught by one another. I’m sure most of us would give our left nut for Forrest to have KO power, though…

by Keith_Cathal on Jul 19, 2009 2:22 PM EDT reply actions

Where did you find Tito is with Affliction. Two days ago it was mad public that Dana and Tito “made amends” and Tito thanked strikeforce and affliction for the opportunity. I see Ortiz coming back. If you found other inof. throw a link out so I can read, but Im saying Tito will fight again, its all business nothing personal.

Personally I’m rooting for Forrest because I think he’s an admirable fighter. He fights with more heart than anyone in the UFC. However, that can only get you so far. The only way I see Silva losing to anyone anytime soon is either by getting caught with a knockout punch(unlikely from Forrest) or the way Hendo won the first round of their matchup(again, unlikely from Forrest). I see Forrest being aggressive as he always is and Silva making him pay for it, over and over again. Good luck Forrest. You’re going to need it.

by Greggo on Jul 19, 2009 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

why do ppl keep sayin Forrest is so agressive. After his loss to Jardine is mentality turn 180 from brawler to fighter. He comes in with good gameplans knows how to keep his distance is good on the ground and you know Randy is gonna have something for Forrest like he always does. With that being said and how much I want forrest to win bc i think the roof on the Wach will pop up from the cheers, Silva TKO rd. 2 sadly. At least I will be able to watch Baby J go down!!!
