Dana White: People are calling Brock Lesnar the Mike Tyson of MMA

Props: Cagewriter
Quoteworthy:
"I was on Opie and Anthony a couple of nights ago and those guys were like you know what? [Brock Lesnar is] your Mike Tyson. This is the guy where people are gonna tune in and say 'Oh My God what's this guy gonna do next?' You know what the crazy part is? I just flew up there a couple weeks ago and we hung out and went to dinner. [Lesnar's] such a good guy, but I'll give you this: The week of the event I have a hard time dealing with him. He gets miserable, he's a grouchy guy who can snap at any time. That's for real."
UFC President Dana White does not condone but at the same time understands the behavior of Brock Lesnar before, during and after UFC 100. White gave Lesnar a verbal lashing following his meltdown against Frank Mir in the main event of their July 11 super-show, but also admits that (aside from the unprovoked sponsor bashing) he might have reacted in a similar fashion following the months of trash talk coming out of the Mir camp. Lesnar -- who already claims he's built like a black man may indeed have that same aura surrounding him that Tyson did. We can only hope that his career ends on more favorable terms. Not just for him, but for the sake of mixed martial arts as well.

Mike Tyson was a dominant devastating boxer facing larger opponents. Brock isn’t devastating, and I wouldn’t consider him dominant, yet.

Yes, Tyson had a much better record than 4-1 when he was annointed the king of the HW division. Very different sports and circumstances though.

I think he is the mike tyson of mma. We dont know how dominant he will be yet but he is still a larger than life polarizing and very intimidating figure….and the media will eat it up. He is GREAT FOR THE UFC> I used to Knock it, but I am on board the Brockness Monster’s warwagon!

Only if Lesnar goes back to wrestling. Lashley just signed with TNA.

"I want to do both because I can. TNA is giving me the opportunity to compete in both sports which I have a passion for," said Lashley. "I will bring MMA fans to wrestling and wrestling fans to MMA".
TNA = Sport?
Lashley = Douche
I liked him but come on…

Lashley wants to compete but he also wants to make money. Nothing wrong with that. Josh Barnett does the same thing.

This is nonsense. Why do people always have to compare a person to someone else? He’s not the Mike Tyson of MMA; he’s the Brock Lesnar of MMA.

When he fights someone as big as he is and can’t manhandle them, he’s gonna get KTFO. Carwin is the man to do it.

Hell, I reckon there would even be a good chance Dos Santos could do it.
Brock is big and the most physically imposing, but his weakness is his striking. He’ll get caught sooner or later. The question is, can that action figure head take a good rocking? And even if it can, anyone can get knocked out.

Don’t call me bub, bub. :) An Era can’t just fade out. Fedor hasn’t lost to anyone and is facing the number two HW in the division. I’d say thats proof enough that he is still the Emperor. I think you have this situation backwards, Lesnar is the only one left who might be able to challenge Fedor. Fedor would tear Lesnars arm off and beach slap him with it!

Personally, I felt Brock brought the UFC down to the level of Vince McMahon and the World Wrestling Federation.
He has four three fights and is crowned champ. No one else I can rememver got such a fast track.
And he curses fans, acts totally uncivil, and bashes sponsors then makes comments degrading to his wife and women in general.
An able fighter indeed, but I do not believe he is what the UFC wants people to think of when they hear the UFC name.

In 3-4 years at the most I see his training slowing down…with age comes injury. A guy that size needs to train accordingly and I just see him not being able to do it for long periods of time…his window is small as he’s already 32

I understand where Brock is coming from…I don’t condone his actions after the fight (especially the sponsor bashing), but one can see how all of the smack talk and critism that he has endured could boil over after winning. Seriously, MMA fans are n the UFC? Maybe everyone who is talking shit about him should step basome of the most respectful fans in all of professional sports, however a good number of them have constantly bashed Brock for being in the WWE. What does being in the WWE have to do with performing n the UFC? UFC fans should take a step back and ask themselves if they would like to be treated the way Brock has been treated. He has been stereotyped as this no talent WWE fake MMA fighter…I know I’d be pissed and would have given the bird to all the people who treated me like dirt.
by jake on Jul 17, 2009 2:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I have only booed once. I paid over $1000 for 2 floor seats to watch Leites sit on his ass against Silva – so I had reason. Other than that, I’ve never booed. However, I think there’s no justification in giving the fans the bird because of booing. Dana should fine Brock, just like the NFL fined Vick for his middle-finger. If you want to be taken seriously, Dana should run it seriously. I know he wasn’t impressed with Brock’s actions, but I doubt he actually fined him.
I personally don’t like him because of the persona he brings to the UFC. He even admitted in the post-fight presser that what we saw was a little WWE. I hope that’s the last we see.
by Stryker on Jul 17, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Stryker, I was so pissed too. Had to pay 1100 for 2 seats about 5 rows above the penalty box, plus gas, food, hotel, entertainment. I think Leites owes me about 2000. On a positive note I did see a wicked fight 2 seats over from me, so the 4th round of that fight I missed.

This sh*t is getting blow way out of proportion. I believe that Brock really is a good guy and just got caught up in the emotion and moment at UFC 100. He made a mistake and without a doubt some of his wwe persona came out. Dana corrected him and I don’t think there will be anymore issues with his behavior.

What did Frank Mir really say that was so bad? I don’t understand this whole Mir trash talk thing. Bisping and Hendo talked more trash than those two did. I just think Lesnar is an dbag. But until he rapes a beauty pageant contestant and claims to want to eat Mir’s children. I think we are going a little far with the Tyson comparision.

Now all of Brock’s supporters want to act like he was a churchboy before the fight and Mir just kept on and kept on and Brock wasn’t saying anything. I’m amazed that some of the people riding Tyson’s jock while at the same time dissing Lesnar fail to recognise that Tyson was a rapist, a wife beater, bit off a piece of someone’s ear during a fight and threatened to eat some children. And still people love him because he was once a badass and can sing bad Phil Collins tunes.

Dana who lives & breathes MMA view and opinion is ten times the merit as any of us MMA keyboard warriors comments are. Brock was raised to compete thats all he knows like Mike Tyson the problem with Mike he was taught no other social skills were Brock can do other things outside MMA Mike had no idea how to deal with problems outside boxing. The only common feature they have and what us fans see is pure passion and at the same time they say what they mean from the heart but it’s not what some fans want to hear. Every MKMA fighter that spoke against what Brock had to say was a potential opponent that want’s to get something on a better MMA fighter than themself. Brock has done what they took years to even get to the chance of doing and their envious comments only make them that much weaker for Brock who will destroy any of them if they are really worried about what he said but I’m sure they are just trying to get in Brocks head and getting us fans behind them when they do.

“We can only hope that his career ends on more favorable terms. Not just for him, but for the sake of mixed martial arts as well.”
Mania, you’ve got to be kidding us. Do you seriously think that a cartoonish post-fight rant from Lesnar is anything like the sad, life-long struggles of Mike Tyson? Really? Lesnar’s background, upbringing, circumstances, and mind-set are nothing like Tyson’s. Lesnar is a showman who has gone a little too far on a couple of occasions, and I’m sure Dana is secretly pleased at the hype these rants have generated. Lesnar doesn’t have a rape conviction; a cocaine problem; a daughter who tragically died; a history of domestic violence, etc. etc. None of that. It’s ridiculous, with all due respect, to blow up this Lesnar rant like it’s “bad for the sport” or like somehow Lesnar is spiraling out of control and will end up in prison or the morgue. Lesnar is trying to generate hype—-nothing more, and nothing less. It’s good for business whether people love him or hate him, and it’s expected, given Lesnar’s training in pro-wrestling.
Let’s not get maudlin or use hyperbole in discussing these events. Lesnar is not going to destroy MMA. He’s not going to end up in the gutter or cause the death of the sport. He’s going to have a certain style about him; but will reel in his ring excesses (somewhat) according to Dana’s instructions. He’s a heel in the mold of Tito and others who have been successful in the past. Nothing more, and nothing less.
I’m not targeting any one site or writer; but these overreactions to relatively minor, commonplace events are becoming like teen-girl gossip. Hendo does a legal strike on Bisping at the end of a fight, and everyone has to talk about “sportsmanship” like little schoolgirls who have never seen a downed opponent hit before. A guy does an over-the-top celebration (Lesnar) after a great victory, and people act like they don’t remember Tito’s gravedigging routine or the celebrations of countless other fighters in the past.
BIG DEAL. I guarantee that there are great MMA stories out there which are not even being discussed or reported because people are wasting time talking about trivialities. Just something to think about….. :)

Brock has some good training and yes he is champion right now and he outright won the belt. People give the guy at least 2 more fights if that , my bet is that Brock will get KO’d similar to that of Liddell knockout but he will not have the same reign. As for booing , cmon don’t boo someone in the cage unless the guy spits in your face of course. Couture was too old Heath was overrated and Mir lucked out the first time. Please give Brock at least two more fights before riding the Lessner express.
