Hahaha, that was my favourite BJ Penn line EVER.
That being said – funny how BJ is calling someone out for potentially biting off more than they can chew.

UFC 101 is now upon us and as most of you know, 15or 16 maniacs have a luxury box for this event. We are also planning to have a nice dinner friday night followed by some gentlemanly fun! If you want to join us for dinner (either Ruth’s Chris or capitol grill) please email me! I think one guy misunderstood me for saying I was buying, I’m NOT! I don’t exactly have 2k laying around for dinner. Whether you’re in the suite with us or just in Philly, you’re welcome to join us for dinner. I also have 1 more ticket available for the suite.

as you all know by now, I am an avid mma gambler. I was looking at the lines for UFC 101 and 1 fight stood out to me, the Almeida/Grove fight. Kendall is a +150 favorite. I dont like Kendal very much, and I am a big fan of Riccardo Almeida, but this is going to be a very tough fight for Almeida. IMO what seperates Almeida’s top shelf Jits from that of Maia is TAKEDOWNS. Almeida is really going to struggle getting grove down to the mat, which will leave him at a huge disadvantage having to stand with Kendall. I hate to root against the BIG DOG, but I see a ton of value betting on Grove at +150.
Im headed over to my gambling website right now to drop some money down on grove!

Kenflo will finish BJ in the 4th or 5th. I am just going to throw that out there- it’s gonna be like my Paulo T pick. But i am way more confident in this one. Kenny’s been training with some impressive guys from top MT strikers to wrestlers like GSP and oil slick grapplers like hioki.
John- Never been sold on Grove’s defensive wrestling. I see the value but i think the Big Dog’s got it.

BJ is giving Kenny some good advice when he talks about being able to back up what you say. If you don’t deliver, it will not feel good and you will look stupid. Just ask BJ about his last fight.

BJ uses the ability he was born with, Kenny has the tremendous work ethic and discipline. My thought is talent should win, but if it is not focused in the right direction it is worthless. I find it very difficult to pick here…
by DJ on Jul 17, 2009 11:15 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Easy pick: BJ, BJ, BJ.
Penn, as much as I hate to say it, will win this fight for sure. He has tremendous hands and is BY FAR the better striker. And on the ground, come on, it’s BJ Penn. All accounts are that BJ has really stepped up his training (I know, we’ve heard that before). Moving his camp out of Hilo is going to be huge for BJ. I think BJ’s going to win by TKO.
by DB on Jul 17, 2009 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
imo he looks great, all the videos I’ve seen of Penn, he’s looking leaner, more defined, he looks to be in great shape. I don’t see him losing either.

BJ BJ BJ BJ!!!!
BJ has lost to GSP and Machida, oh yeah and Hughes (who also beat GSP). SO what.
Bj hasn’t lost to wimpy guys who say “I want BJs belt”
by Bennie Blanco on Jul 18, 2009 5:16 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
BJ makes a good point. tHis doesnt sound like the real Kenny Florian. He has gotten cocky and that can be detrimental to Kenny’s success. One of my favorite aspects of Ken flow was his nerdy, not shit talking change of pace type attitude that he brought to mma. Now he is getting Cocky and acting different, which could possibly weigh against Ken flow’s next performance.
I will be curious to see how Kenny performs against the creme de la creme!
Dont get it twisted, Ken flow has some really over rated wins under his belt:
Dokonjonesuke Mishima
Din THomas Injury
Huerta was OK.
Joe daddy was very impressive.
I think he cheated against J-lau!
Kenny has gotten his 2nd title shot while avoiding the cream of the crop lightweight wrestlers which FLOOD the LW division. I think he has been somewhat protected by JOe silva! Kenny’s weakness is wrestling, but he got a shot avoiding all the great wrestlers like:
Sherk
Maynard
Tyson
Edgar
Clay
Sherk
by JOhn G on Jul 18, 2009 8:14 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
John G it’s time for you to look at BJ’s wins.. cause they aren’t as big and impressive as people seem to think..
Jens Pulver (done)
Joe daddy (didn’t want to be there)
Sean Sherk (horrible without the juice, and a terrible strategy)
around these wins he has losses to GSP and a loss to Hughes
by RoB on Jul 18, 2009 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Kenny Florian will win, BJ’s chance is to catch Kenny with one big punch!.. I don’t BJ is motivated at all and he’s gonna find that out himself when he’s starting to lose the fight
by RoB on Jul 18, 2009 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
BJ frustrates me more than any other fighter out there. Without doing anything he is better than almost any other fighter, but he doesn’t work to make himself better. He could go down as one of the greatest fighters of all time, but I think he will end up being remembered as a guy who was too lazy to maximize his talent.
by PW on Jul 18, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good post, John. I agree, mostly.
Whichever way one looks at it, Florian isn’t a decisive number one contender like Thiago Alves was.

bj wont win more than 1 round, you heard it here first, kenny will dominate this fight. bj retires after this latest loss. bj will be 4-5 his last 9 fights after this loss.

I hate saying the words but it is pretty obvious who wins this fight. I wish the worse for B.J. but this is his fight to lose. If you say that Kenny has this fight easily, you are kidding us and yourselves. BJ wins in the first round just to shut people up.
by jay on Jul 18, 2009 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
WHAT bj wins in the first round. OMG OMG, how can you say that, florian is the most underated fighter in the ufc. HE is not the same fighter that fought sherk. Can bj win, sure he can, is it gonna be a dominating first round finish, NOT A CHANCE. I would bet my house that florian is not finished in the first round, there is no way. War Florian. I met Florian at liddell vs tito 2, and had some drinks with him, he was not big headed or anything a real nice dude. WAR Florian….

When u look at Kenny’s last couple of fights, his ability seems to be up there with BJ’s whether it is natural or not, I can’t tell the difference anymore.

dont worry Dave you’ll clearly see the difference when bj is raping flo so hard it wouldn’t even be a learning experience for you..

Kenny has to execute a perfect gameplan. His brain is his primary edge over BJ. He has to keep BJ guessing. If Penn gets in a rhythm, Kenny is out. I bet on Kenny thinking this was 50-50 but I’m starting to doubt myself.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 18, 2009 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
your right punch but I doubt any gameplan will work for kenny against bj..there’s absolutely nothing he can do..to the ground? bj will sure submit him..standing? he will be smothered worse than stevenson and sherk..hell! even on water and air he doesnt stand a chance..

I’m telling you right now this fight is gonna come down to heart and conditioning; 2 things BJ dosen’t have. “to the death Kenny and I’m not kidding about this.” Then I’ll quit in the corner.
by Wes on Jul 17, 2009 11:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
So just quit. BJ doesn’t have heart? C’mon..
by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Jul 18, 2009 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Does he? So why did he quit? Champions don’t quit. It’s one thing to have tremendous talent. But he usually dosen’t have the gas tank and now proved to lack the intestinal fortitude to keep fighting even when things aren’t going his way. I used to like BJ, but after all the crap he talked before the GSP fight and then went in there pussed out… Then wasn’t man enough to admit he was beaten. He’s a professional excuse maker. His best days are long behind him. He might beat Kenny, but I don’t see it.
by Wes on Jul 18, 2009 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry Kenny but this one isn’t happenin for you. I really like Ken flo too but BJ Penn is on another level and Kenny Florian is NOT GSP; imo, BJ Penn is the GSP of the LW division and he’s not going to lose this fight or any other fight at LW
by O damn he got caught on Jul 18, 2009 12:00 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You’re right about that Ken-Flo. BJ can finish you. But you can’t finish BUJ. You can’t do a stoppage due to cuts, and he’s too flexible to be submitted. Your only hope is to ground and pound this dude. But it ain’t gonna happen Kenny my boy. It ain’t gonna happen….Where in the fuckin’ hell is Adam G when you need him!??!

Kenny Florian is going to surprise a lot of people in this fight. He’s going to drag BJ into the later rounds and finish him
by zachy on Jul 18, 2009 1:25 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
BJ is 6 and 4 in his last 10 and 13, 5 and 1 career.
In the last 4 years he has only beaten Sherk, Stevenson and Pulver (Pulver has lost his last 6 of 7 and fights outside the UFC at 145). Going back to 2004-2005 BJ had a few wins in K1 but these aren’t UFC caliber guys. Going back to his 2001-2004 fights is too far back to matter. So basically BJ has 2 UFC wins in 5 years.
Meanwhile Florian is 9 and 1 in his last 10 with his only loss by decision to Sherk. Recent wins over Joe Stevenson, Huerta and Lauzon.
Granted, BJ’s losses have been to physically larger superstars (GSP X2, Machida, Hughes) but he hasn’t exactly piled up the wins either.
Given that BJ’s cardio is probably the worst in his division and you can count on Kenny coming in fit, I’d say if it goes into later rounds Kenny wins. This is a 5 rounder so BJ needs a KO in round 1 or 2 or he’s toast. There’s no way Kenny gets subbed unless he’s softened up first and half unconscious.
Currently the line is +170 Kenny and -210 Penn. I’d say put your money on Kenny and cash in on whatever fans BJ has left.
by H.I.McDunnough on Jul 18, 2009 1:30 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I’ve always said, give me an example (other than hughes 2 when bJ dominated until a fluke rib injury) of when he gasses? 3 rounds with GSP, 3 rounds (way over weight) to Mchida, etc. I just don’t get it, seriously. Yes I’m a BJ Penn fan, but I’m asking this question seriously!
by kevin on Jul 18, 2009 2:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
lol, since when is it bad to lose to GSP/Machida/Hughes.
Hughes beat GSP. GSP is one of, if not the best p4p. And Machida = Greatness.
Not a bad group to lose to there.
by Bennie Blanco on Jul 18, 2009 4:50 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
BJ gave Machida his toughest fight yet and GSP outweighed BJ by 20 pounds by the time they fought, BJ has no business fighting at 170 pounds. The one common opponent is Sherk, BJ made him look silly for 3 rounds and then finally knocked him out. Kenny on the other hand lost to Sherk in five rounds. Every time Kenny opens his mouth, he sounds more and more like a preppy know it all…..BJ beats Kenny, which puts Kenny in a bad spot losing to the champ and the number 2 guy.
by Robert(1) on Jul 18, 2009 7:48 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
mma has greatly evolved, machida is not the same fighter who only had a few fights when he fought BJ. If they fought now, bj wouldnt make it out of the first. GSP is not the same fighter, that fought BJ the second time, he evolved and became way skilled, and we saw the result, when they fought the second time, that was one of the worst mismatches of all time, like a man against a boy. fighters evolve, while bj does not. People are going to be very suprised to see just how good kenny has gotten, bj on the other hand is the same fighter, since he trains with the worst training camp possible, combine that with his laziness, spells loss of the belt come august. i will bet any bj fan that he doesnt win morte than one round. florian has evolved past him
by dtoto on Jul 18, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

by Dabest on Aug 10, 2009 4:23 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good post man. That’s what I’m talking about. Bj was a “prodigy” when a lot of fighters weren’t training BJJ. Now everyone trains BJJ so he’s finding that it’s a more level playing field. Plus his opponents actually come in great condition.

by theCloser on Jul 18, 2009 4:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I love when people bring up Penn’s record in his last 10. 3 of those losses are to the top two welterweights EVER. And his 4th loss? To LYOTO MACHIDA who just happens to be the champion at 205. Penn is unstoppable at LW and I just dont see where Florian has an advantage? BJ is a better boxer, has better take down defense and is better on the ground. Florian has kicks and sharp elbows. Now as good as Florian has become this is like welterweights challenging GSP for the title. Its just not going to happen. Penn by TKO round 2.

don’t even try BB, these guys dont understand the size now!
by kevin on Jul 18, 2009 5:03 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
lol gsp didnt win because he was bigger than bj, but because he is way more skilled, and a much well rounded fighter than bj. i love how people think gsp wins because he is bigger than his opponents, but when fighters like fitch and alves , who are heavier than gsp fight him, they still get tossed around like rag dolls. gsp could give up 1o lbs to bj penn, and he would still beat him
by dtoto on Jul 18, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I totally agree Kenny would not last long with gsp, and i believe that bj has done enough in this sport that he is aloud to talk all the shit he wants and i think he was really trying to get into gsp’s head with talking all that shit, but what has kenny florian really done ? other then knock the mouth piece clear out of alvin robinson’s mouth (pretty sick) and beat a very overrated (in my mind) joe stevenson, roger huerta, joe lauzon, and an aging din thomas IMO kenny is in over his head …… penn by domination

I still think BJ has a strength advantage.
Regarding cardio, this is Florian’s key to winning. If he can stave off BJ till the championship rounds, he’ll eek out a decision.
I want to see BJ win this fight. His attitude is already changing (growing up). It would be cool to see one of the most talented fighters evolve into the best he could be…versus quit like a pussy because he lost to Florian.

It makes me laugh when all the haters of bj say that he’s all hype and he will lose to ken-flo. your all just showing that you know f**k all about mma. he’s the best 155 fighter on the plant period
by vinrex7 on Jul 18, 2009 11:19 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
sure vinrex7 i think its you who see things through rose colored glasses, ill bet before the gsp fight when i predicted that bj wouldnt win a single round, and that it would be one of the worst mismatches in championship history, you were one of the delusional bj fans that thought i was crazy. you are the one with no mma knowledge, i also predicted alves wouldnt win a round either against gsp, was right again. im predicting bj wont win more than one round against kenny, lets see who is right. bj is overrated he will be 4-5 after this latest loss in his last 9 fights.

well everyone listen to dtoto because he obviously knows it all and has been right on so many occasions there will be no point buying the ppv now. and i’m guessing that because you brought up gsp’s last 2 fights your obviously a gsp nut hugger and thats why you hate on bj. i on the other hand try to keep an open mind, and i think that ken-flo is a real good fighter, just not in the same league as bj. mark my words kennys going down we’ll see what happens to your predictions then
by vinrex7 on Jul 18, 2009 11:52 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs

by Kobajack on Jul 18, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not saying that if you get a prediction wrong then you know nothing about mma.
but if you say that bj isn’t the number 1 155er on the planet then you are showing that you have limited knowledge of the sport. and to have losses against hughs most dominant ww ever, gsp best p4p fighter imo, machida 2nd best p4p doesn’t mean that your hyped up. if any of those fighters were at his natural weight, he’d beat them all.
by vinrex7 on Jul 18, 2009 12:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
that was then, this is now. Now everyone else is catching up to BJ.
by Rich on Jul 18, 2009 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly, his skill level used to be head and shoulders above everybody else. Now guys are training every aspect of mma and there are some really good athletes out there that put their heart and soul into the sport. His skill level hasn’t improved or evolved over the past few years- just kind of stagnated while everyone else has really elevated thier game. He still thinks his skill level is above everyone else so he dosen’t have to train that hard. I think he needs to train with a totally different team where he will be pushed and challenged. You can tell he dosen’t get that in his training cuz when that happens in his fights he either quits or just kind of gives up. Did it in both of his fights against GSP.

by PP on Jul 18, 2009 3:29 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t care too much for BJ, but statistacally after BJ gets his ass embarressed he gets remotivated and focused. GSP made sure of that, and BJ has been looking good and has really been trainning hard. BJ’s biggest problem is no matter what, he is rich, so what is his motivation, unfortunately it is pride, he’s Hawaiian so pride is very motivating. I see him beating Florian. Fights after that who knows. He just can’t seem to stay focused or motivated. Just imagine Micheal Jordan if he was rich in his colledge years, probably would never have been the MJ we know today…
