WEC 45: Mike Brown in talks to defend featherweight crown against Jose Aldo on November 11

WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Thomas Brown (22-4) and division number one contender Jose Aldo (15-1) will throw down at WEC 45 at a location to be named later on November 11, according to the Brazilian at InTheGuard.tv.

Brown burst onto the scene at WEC 36 as the number one contender to face Urijah Faber in what was at the time the ex-world champion’s sixth title defense. The American Top Team powerhouse shocked many by stopping the seemingly unbeatable Faber in the first round with a brutal barrage of strikes.

The newly crowned champion then cemented his status as one of the best at 145-pounds four months later by successfully defending that title with a first round submission win over Greg Jackson product Leonard Garcia at WEC 39.

"The California Kid" attempted to reclaim his title at WEC 41 back in June, but Brown rebuked him with five rounds of punishment -- on the same card that saw Aldo win in just eight seconds.

The promotion’s 145-pound division has recently skyrocketed with talent. And the line of contenders is growing longer as each event passes. Still, it’s hard to imagine anyone more deserving than Aldo.

The Brazilian smashing machine is now undefeated (5-0) in the WEC with five straight (technical) knockout victories. He recently scored a crushing win over Cub Swanson at WEC 41, ending the fight before it even got started with a slick skin-splitting flying knee.

This bout -- which could be the champ's toughest test to date -- has fireworks written all over it.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this developing fight card.

this is good news. ill take aldo in this one. if brown can take aldo down he has a good chance but aldo is pretty good all around and will tear brown to pieces in the standup department. brown has heavy hands but i think aldo is a little too good to get caught with a looping hook.

I like Aldo in this one too. But man, Mike Brown’s just so strong and doesn’t make any mistakes.

This fight will probably be more exciting than most of the fights people would watch in the UFC. Too bad guys like Aldo and Brown dont get the same pub.

Brown’s got to be the favorite and I don’t know how much money I’d throw down … but I like Aldo too. Brown might turn out to be too much for him but I think he can catch the far inferior striker standing up.

Man this is great news but sad news. I really like both these guys but there is nothin better than relevant MMA between top 5 fighters. I think aldo is way more dynamic on the feet, and on the ground no one has tested him especially with the top game of Brown. I still think he will win, maybe by sub because Brown is one hard SOB to finish standing.

November 11th is a Wednesday. That’s kind of weird, usually WEC events are Sunday.

Not during football season they aren’t.

this fight reminds me a little of GSP vs Alves. Aldo is crazy explosive, but I have to trust in Brown’s solid skillset and maturity. I think Brown will come in with a smart gameplan and get the job done.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 15, 2009 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brown will be looking to use his strength and keep Aldo on his back in this one. Brown’s experience will make him the favourite but Aldo is so quick and sharp standing I could see Brown getting overwhelmed really at any time but being the tough SOB that Brown is it probably won’t happen until R3.

I really think Aldo is the future star and even if he somehow loses will hold the belt at some time in the future.

by Ca$z on Jul 15, 2009 4:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am going with Brown. Aldo fights like a tornado, and is a scary 145, but I don’t think he has fought someone like Brown yet, and I am curious to see if he still comes into this fight with the same type of aggressive style.

by naturalshadow on Jul 15, 2009 5:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

IMO- I think Mike Brown is like the GSP of the 145er’s..
He should be able to hold that belt for a while..

That said’ I do believe Jose Aldo could present an interesting fight.. This guy is one of my favorite new fighters I have learned about over the last year and a half.. I hope that he decides to have another fight before challenging for the belt(imo, he needs it).

by Stagger-Lee on Jul 15, 2009 7:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Aldo was talkin about dropping to 135 and fighting Torres; Brown’s big at 145, I think his size is going to be the difference.

by O damn he got caught on Jul 15, 2009 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Great fight! Regardless of the outcome fans are left with a great champion, and thats all I can really as for as a fan.

Brown is undoubtedly the favorite, but Aldo is NO JOKE either. Brown should be closely studying GSP’s gameplan against Alves.

I know Aldo is a BJJ Black belt, but I havent seen mych of his Jits game because he has been too busy lighting people the FOCK up in the stand up!

As great as this fight will be, stylistically, the best fight that the WEC has to offer is:

Aldo vs. Miguelito!

by JOhn G on Jul 15, 2009 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

brown has a better chance of winning, but as a betting man, Aldo as an underdog is too juicy to pass up on!

by JOhn G on Jul 15, 2009 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The cool thing is that even if Brown overwhelms Aldo and grinds him out, we still could see a huge Torres/Aldo fight. Guess he’d have to pick up a win or two at 35 first, but that would be an even better fight IMO. Wicked technical stand-up battle that quickly degenerates into a mindless brawl.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 15, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lately, the couple times I’ve allowed the odds to make me bet apart from who I think will win, I’ve just lost the money. So I’m hoping Brown isn’t too much of a favorite so I can get a decent return on him.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 15, 2009 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Punch I agree, this fight is the 145 GSP-Alves, where a huge, dominant wrestler takes on a dangerous striker who looks unstoppable. I’ve learnt from my past mistakes so I’m going for a Brown win, after he destroyed Garcia I’m not going against Brown again, the guy is a huge FW and is even too good for Faber. He is really well rounded and even if someone has better BJJ or striking he can take them down and control them GSP style.

Aldo is scary good, that KO over Swanson was one of the craziest things that I’ve seen in this sport, the guy is a monster and will go on to great things. That being said, I think this will go the same way as GSP-Alves, where MTB takes down Aldo and controls the fight on the ground en route to a UD, MTB is too big and strong and Aldo hasn’t been tested yet. His best chance at winning is by a quick KO, like Alves I don’t think Aldo will last the pace if the fight goes into the later rounds and if MTB starts to get the better of him he will fold. Aldo is a worthy challenger and this will be an awesome fight, but I like his chances against Torres better.

by David W-S on Jul 15, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Aldo’s pace is insane. I agree that if the fight goes to the ground brown will probably submit aldo. For aldo to get the belt he can’t get pinned against the cage and has the best chance of winning by stand up. But no urijah faber is better than brown his right hand was broken and left was dislocated but thats no excuse for faber it just happens. Aldo has to frustrate brown on the feet and he for sure can’t get taken down or else thats the fight. Aldo has enough experience and is ready for this fight. Every one says that aldo has never fought anyone better than brown but no one knows about the opponents aldo has faced in mma. Brown might win the fight but he still has to be really cautios of knees if he tries to take him down. If aldo beats brown I would love to see aldo vs faber.

Aldo is scarey… going with Aldo for sure.. Mike Brown is amazing, but Aldo has that thing you just don’t see that often… next champ. Done.

by rawbert on Jul 14, 2009 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

careful rawbert. His quick finishes don’t tell you that much about how he will endure in a war. Plus, people underestimate guys like him who rise so quickly. That results in highlight reels, but it doesn’t equate to him being the best. He certainly could be, but we don’t know that yet. The smart money is on the guy you have enough data on to say with certainty that he is strong, skilled, and there to fight for five 5-minute rounds if necessary.

It wasn’t that long ago that Faber was being mentioned in the top 5 P4P discussions. People were calling him unbeatable and we had a lot of legit data on him. Brown took him out twice. That’s concrete fact. Root for Aldo, but put your money on Brown.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 15, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

browns got this one, but who knows aldo is always a skin splitting double flying knee away from beating anyone in the world..

by guyverbob on Jul 14, 2009 10:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yall really think Aldo stand’s much of a chance in this fight. On paper Garcia had a better shot at Brown on paper than Aldo does. I don’t think Aldo’s a top 5 fw anyway. He doesn’t deserve a title shot yet.

by june06 on Jul 14, 2009 11:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He definately deserves a shot. He is 15-1 overall with 8 consecutive wins (5 since he joined the WEC) all by way of TKO with the last 3 being in the first round. 10 of his 15 wins have been R1 stoppages with a mixture of KO’s and submissions. The guy is no joke and there really is no one else to fight him other than Brown now.

I would have said put him against Faber or Garcia but they both just lost in their title shots so it makes no sense him fighting either them at this point.

I think he will prove he is more than worthy when he finishes Brown.

by Ca$z on Jul 15, 2009 4:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

idk june06, i think he most def deserves a shot at the title. who else is in that division that deserves it more? aldo has some serious skills. its a toss up..

He did. I’m just dumb.

I think if Aldo uses his speed in this fight, he can take it. In the faber/brown 2 fight, you saw faber use that blueprint to throw brown off (in the earlier rounds, before the broken hand). But man, Aldo is a different breast…I see FOTY on this one…

by Drew C on Jul 15, 2009 1:29 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wanna see this fight more than anything the UFC is putting together right now.

Aldo via less “help”. Brown just keeps getting smaller…

by Youtaped on Jul 15, 2009 6:22 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Mike Browns toughest challenge to date, Really? Do they come much more well rounded, faster, stronger, and creative then Faber? Yeah, Aldo is great but Mike Brown just handled the guy who everyone seemingly thought was unbeateable, and he beat him 2 times convincingly. Aldo has beaten 3 or 4 nobodies in the WEC and he is a bigger challenger then Faber. Who has Aldo beaten in the WEC that would make you think he is a tougher opponent the Faber. Yeah he has a crazy skill set and has looked amazing in his fights, but he has not fought anybody in the upper ranks of this weight class. Like Bisping with Henderson, Bisping is good has a great sprawl, has amazing speed and is real crisp at 185, and gets up real easy. If he wins he will get a title shot, for what? Beating a bunch of b level fighters and one A level fighter. Well Look what happens when you give a poster boy championship credit for beating a bunch of nobodies. An over hand right from someone with a solid game plan that doesn’t get fooled by his dancing antics in the ring and bang fight over, sleep tight Count. I just don’t like how fighters are all hyped up before they have fought any real opponents.

by Da Monkey on Jul 15, 2009 7:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

hes not a bigger challenge than faber but who knows what would of happened in the last fight had faber not broken his hand. that being said i do not think aldo is as well rounded as faber but he is dangerous on his feet – the spot faber give brown the most trouble in. while he may not his biggest challenge he is a tough opponent and think he may have the ability to t.k.o or k.o brown.

by irishlilpete on Jul 15, 2009 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brown by destruction.

Its funny how everyone keeps doubting Brown when he’s proved hes the best 145 in the world 3 times now.

Could not agree with you more Lester

by Da Monkey on Jul 15, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don’t think it’s about doubting Brown. It’s about respecting Aldo’s ability to end fights.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 15, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Aldo…1st tround brutal KO.

by introvert on Jul 15, 2009 10:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yea i really think Aldo is the next big thing in the WEC for sure, if you dont already think Cerrone is up there cuz hes another one. but on the topic of this fight and these 2 in general, i think Aldo can finish it in a number of different positions. he can probably submit brown if brown isnt careful. brown also looked alot sloppier in the standup in the 2nd fight with urijah and i think aldo has a way more dangerous stand up game than urijah and probably a better jits game. the only reason ppl thought faber was unbeatable is because nobody saw much hope in any of the other fighters in his division. but thats changed quite a bit now and WEC has some other names. Torres has to lose sometime as well, its all about the evolution of the sport. GSP came outta nowhere for the most part and all together to just mainstream fans. i think the Brown/GSP comparisons are a little bit far fetched as Brown is not as good in the stand up (yet?) and could use a lot more explosiveness on the top and a more diverse skill set on the ground in general. ya hes good but hes not unstoppable.
sorry for the storybook postin haha i just really like WEC ;)

by JakeAnd on Jul 15, 2009 2:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Torres will get beat before the end of his career. He hasn’t fought the best guys. I seriously think brian bowles is going to submit torres. This is torres hardest fight ever. Beebe is the hardest opponent torres has faced so far. Bowles submitted the #2 guy will robiero. No one is giving bowles a chance. My mind is telling me that bowles is going to choke torres out in the 1st or 2nd round. For example brown was such a big underdog the first fight against urijah and brown caught him and got the victory.

by James on Aug 4, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I gotta go fur brown. I just don’t see aldo beating him anywhere. I suppose he could outbox him— But fur Five rounds!? with Mike Brown!? not too likely. Brown would get him down eventually. And if Faber broke his hand on browns head and brown kept moving forward, I don’t see anyone finishing him on the feet. (brown has never been ko’ed or tko’ed, all his losses are by submission) as for the ground, brown is such a menacingly big guy that I feel he would be able to keep control all the time. the only chance I see aldo having is catching brown in a submission.
