Brock Lesnar vs Fedor Emelianenko in the UFC

Not so fast, Dana White ... Josh Barnett has other plans:

"I read that Dana says they'll get Fedor and make Fedor vs. Brock and it'll be great. Better get a new plan after Aug 1st."

Even if there is a major miracle that somehow brings Fedor Emelianenko into the UFC fray, his opponent at Affliction: "Trilogy," Josh Barnett, reminds everyone about the possibility that he could lose when the pair collides at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Aug. 1. Sure, it hasn't happened in nearly a decade, but the "Babyface Assassin" is no pushover. Thoughts?

Barnett has a point, but I would still much rather see Fedor vs. Brock…

barnett is 2nd best H.W. i think thats a joke.

That headline is just mean… I got all excited!!

Ha ha me too. I don’t see Fedor having many problems with Barnett tho. Barnett is a solid fighter, say for arguments sake straight 8’s (out of 10) in each skill set.

Thing is Fedor is straight 9’s, he will handle him in every area.

What makes the Brock fight appealing is he has a 10 up his sleave with his wrestling and it would be great to see what Fedor can do to fight off his takedowns/controlled g&p.

by Nick J on Jul 14, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont think Fedor could handle Brocks TD’s at all, hell Kevin “the midget” Randleman flung him round like a rag doll and Brock’s ten times stronger than him. I believe he’d sub him off his back though.

Cant wait to see Barnett vs. Fedor! That is the main event of my summer!

yOu guys can enjoy your Brock vs. Mir, and gSP vs. Alves, but Fedor against the #2 HW on earth is my personal superbowl

Fedor is facing Barnett, not the #2 HW on earth.

Like it or not Barnett is number two.

by attakdog on Jul 14, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont know about what you guys think, but Barnett, in his last few fights, has been turning them into a grappling match. His rematch with Noguiera was a boxing match and he lost. I think fedor takes this in decision or 2nd round submission. anddddd, i see UFC making Fedor the first base salary million dollar fighter in the UFC to take on Brock.

as for Jay.. you’re joking right?? barnett over Brock any day.

Brock vs. Fedor sounds great and eveything but how about:

FEDOR VS. OVEREEM
or
OVEREEM VS. BROCK.

by rockwell on Jul 14, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Overeem has to get through Werdum first, which is by no means guaranteed if Fabricio can take him down. But yeah, I’ve been calling for a cross-promoted Affliction/Strikeforce Fedor/Overeem fight for a while.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 14, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why exactly is Overeem’s name getting mentioned in the same breath as Fedor and Brock???

The guy has no gas tank, was an average LHW, has lost everytime he’s fought top opponents and wouldn’t pass a drug test so would be unable to fight in the states for a legitimate promotion.

by attakdog on Jul 14, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And Coker has not contacted you??? Thank god you have been calling for this fight. Now I am sure it will happen

by kazanski13 on Jul 14, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I don’t get how Barnett is #2 and I love Barnett but his last few fights were not that impressive imo.

by Edgecrusher71 on Jul 14, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know kazanski, I’ve been trying to establish a dialogue with Coker about this fight for some time now. I think he may have lost my cell number. Plus he’s really busy. But yeah, I’m confident we’ll sit down together and iron it out sooner or later.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 14, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who’s better than him then???? Please tell us!

AA – Good breeze fells him nowadays.
Big Nog – Past it.
Couture – Past it.
Carwin – Unproven
Velazquez – Unproven

Only legitimate challenger is Brock, but he still needs at least one more quality win to be considered higher than Barnett.

K-Dog-

Agreed.

by OJR on Jul 14, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think that Brock needs SEVERAL more quality wins before he even deserves to be spoken in the same breath as Fedor. Honestly, Mir is his only quality win, and he has a loss to him as well. Beathing a run-down, hasn’t-fought-in-over-a-year Couture really doesn’t count as a quality win in my book. Plus with his jerk antics at the last show, I don’t think he has even the tiniest shred of class to be mentioned with Fedor.

by rachem42 on Jul 14, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know what you mean JJ, but Overeem has looked like a monster lately and Werdum has just looked all right. WAR Overeem, hope he makes this fight look easy. I’d personally love to see Fedor Overeem before Fedor Brock and with the relationship between Strikeforce/Affliction, it seems like it could happen.

K-Dog -

Overeem gets brought up because he’s a great striker and would be a fun match-up for Fedor if Fedor doesn’t immediately join the UFC. Yeah, he was a LHW but the dude is definitely a HW now. Fedor is a pudgy LHW himself.

Hey John, in reply to your post about Attencio signing Fedor for affliction to 2012 – No I don’t think you’re lying, I think Attencio is lying to himself if he thinks its worth running affliction for another 3 years, or that Fedor is lying to himself if he thinks he will be able to face the best competition by fighting outside the UFC much longer.

Fedor is scared of getting beaten and is currently abusing his position to extort fans of MMA into paying for another PPV just to see the self proclaimed best fighter in the world fight, we don’t actually have a clue who the best is as Fedor has refused to fight in the UFC against the best, he should have faced Coture but the time has passed for that to be relevant, cheers Fedor. I hate him for keeping so many great fights from fans and keeping the HW division in muddy waters without a clear number 1.

I am sick and tired of it, man up Fedor! Eventually promoters will get tired of losing money by overpaying Fedor and the big paydays for UFC rejects like Arlovski, Werdum, Barnett and Sylvia will dry up because the promoters simply cant make a return on these fights. I would bet that the third affliction event just costs the promoters even more money with an even lower PPV rating. With all the great ufc ppv cards and free strikeforce and wec cards, affliction is pretty much just a sidenote.

As far as who he will fight, would anyone be surprised to see Grim or Overeem sign with the UFC? That leaves Werdum – you thinks that’s a credible fight for Fedor? Grim sure as hell wouldn’t be a credible fight yet, Overeem is only just credible but he’s ranked 10th in the HW division, beating him proves nothing, the 4-5 UFC HW fighters ranked above Overeem should be Fedors focus but he seems happy to get payed more than he’s worth without challenging himself.

Grim would join UFC in a heartbeat, let him smash kimbo in the TUF finale or on an UFN card as an opener, JUST FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES, then give him Kongo, CroCop, Cain, Dos Santos, man i want to see those fights bad! that would keep him busy and see if he was title material.

Overeem on the UFC “I could end up in the UFC” “I would like to fight Lesnar” “my management team has been in talks with the UFC” the guy was seen on TV chilling with Dana White. Personaly i dont think Overeem would get the belt in the UFC, but i want to see him try.

Here’s what Lorenzo Fertita had to say on Fedor, Brock and teammates not wanting to fight. Thanks to someone for posting the link to this.

—- There’s an online petition called FedorChant.com, where a thousand people are going to cheer "Fedor" (Emelianenko) during the main event (at UFC 100). Is that going to put more pressure on you, and just the fact that Fedor doesn’t want to sign because of sambo, was that something that you’d ever overlook?

Fertitta: I hope all 12,000 people yell Fedor’s name at the same time. The pressure’s not on me. The pressure’s on him. They already know. The facts are the facts. We made him the best offer out there, more money than anybody offered him –- so you can’t say it’s about the money. Then they come back and they say, "Well, it’s a one-sided contract." Let’s break this down from a logical standpoint. We offered the exact same contract that three hundred other guys have signed, including Brock Lesnar, Chuck Liddell, Anderson Silva, GSP, all the top stars. Why is that contract not good enough for Fedor? What Fedor wants is this. He doesn’t want to be exclusive. So, it’s like saying, okay, Tom Brady: "I’m going to play for New England Patriots one Sunday, but you know what? After that game’s over, I want to be a free agent and go see where I can play for the rest of the season." Every weekend he’s going to skip around and play for whoever he wants. How does that make sense for us as a business or for the fans? He needs to come into our fold if he wants to cement his legacy as the best fighter in the world. We can figure something out with the sambo thing… (but) at the end of the day, I think we need to have a situation where at least 90 or 120 days before he’s signed a contract to fight, he shouldn’t be out there competing in events like that because I don’t want to take the chance of him getting hurt. But all of this stuff with Fedor: we want Fedor. As soon as he gets done with this show that he’s doing, he can come –- we’ve never met Fedor. I want to sit down. I want to talk to him and that’s part of the problem. We’ve never even met the guy. But it is a shame that he has not come forward to challenge the best guys in the world and I hope he comes. We want him.

Is the sambo really a sticking point?

Fertitta: That’s a big excuse for Fedor to say he’s not coming to the UFC, and quite honestly, I don’t think it’s Fedor. I think Fedor wants to compete. The issue has been his management. They’ve completely kept him aside. I’m not sure he even knows what we offered him, to be honest with you. I think if he knew what we offered, he would have been here a long time ago. There’s been a little bit of disconnect there… we want to meet him in person. We will not sit down and negotiate until me and Dana meet him in person. And if at that time he decides to not be a part of what we’re doing, then we know.

Why did you do a one-fight deal with (Mirko) “Cro Cop” (Filipovic) and not Fedor?

Fertitta: We have a direct relationship with Cro Cop and we talk to him on the phone and the deal went down so quickly. It wasn’t a one-fight deal. The contract was a quick one-fight contract, but he gave us his word that it was going to be a four-fight deal. I just got back from Croatia last week, spent some time with Mirko, went to his house. (He’s a) super nice guy, we went to lunch, and the fact of the matter is yesterday I got a contract signed for three fights.

What was your initial reaction when you were approached by Brock Lesnar? Were you a little hesitant that it was for real or not?

Fertitta: I’ve got to give props to Dana White on that one, man. He called me up one day and said, "You know what? I want to get Brock Lesnar." I had watched Brock when he fought in the (Los Angeles) Coliseum (for K-1) and I was really impressed with his athleticism. I could tell it was no joke. And the other thing we looked at, is we said, "This guy is a world-class athlete." It’s not like that’s some made-up thing… we said we might take some hits here or there because he’s a pro wrestler, but we believed in his abilities and just the sheer size, power, and strength. We sat down and talked to him and this guy’s the real deal. The other thing is, I had heard through a few guys at the Miletich camp, where he’d gone down and trained, and they said, "Let me tell you what. This guy is no joke. If he focuses, he could be the heavyweight champion."

There’s a lot of great superfights out there, but teammates refuse to fight teammates, such as Anderson Silva vs. Lyoto Machida. What’s the UFC’s opinion about teammate vs. teammate fights?

Fertitta: Look, at the end of the day, we’re here to see fighters, we’re here to see fights. If teammates don’t want to fight, then they’re gonna have to go somewhere else. We don’t put up with that stuff.

Barnett got smashed by Yvel, no one can convince me otherwise. I think his ranking should have gone down after that fight or the hurricane’s should have gone up.

Great post paniczoo. I’ve been saying the same thing as Fertitta, if 300 other fighters can sign with the UFC no problem, then the problem is Fedor plain and simple. I’m sure Fedor’s contract was much sweeter than all the others also.

rofl @ paniczoo

please provide sources for fedor proclaiming himself the best fighter in the world.

i’ve seen a couple articles where he said the complete opposite, douchebag.

by axhed on Jul 15, 2009 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Axhead, don’t be so naive, Fedor hardly sais anything, ever… but in a lot of his marketing material promoting Fedors fights he is billed as the number one heavyweight, p4p best mma fighter, worlds best, undisputed hw champion, the affliction banned poster even had him billed as the undisputed Pride heavyweight champion! That belt went to Zuffa when they bought Pride and he had the chance to fight Cotoure to unify the heavyweight titles – why the hell didn’t he?

As the biggest commodity/draw in the promotion and highest paid fighter do you think he isn’t consulted to approve how his image is portrayed?

The guy surrounds himself with giggling sycophants and lets them perpetuate this image of invincibility. Or are you going to say Fedor is too weak to control how his image is used or who he associates with and how they portray him?

by paniczoo on Jul 15, 2009 1:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gord I agree and alluded to the same thing myself a few weeks ago, Fedor is so arrogant and self centred that he thinks it’s the rest of the mma world that’s wrong and not him. My tagline on this matter is “The Last Emperor Has No Clothes”

Brock beating Barnett is no gimmee Jay, Barnett is hell of a fighter who never seems to get the credit he deserves on here.

With Barnett’s speed, Brock would punch him 10 times before Barnett’s hand left his cheek. Brock would be way too fast for slow-mo joe.

by jay on Jul 14, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

EVERYONE is sleeping on Barnett…he has what it takes to beat the whos-whos of the HWY division in any org…therefore I’m going with Barnett “grinding” out a SD against Fedor…if anyone is going to beat the Big Russian bear right now, it’s him. Brock/UFC or not, I just think Barnett is no walk through, but he’s not going to submit/KO fedor (highly shocked as all hell IF he does). Thats my two cents….

by Drew C on Jul 14, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Barnetts problem is history. His roid use won him no fans and tainted his victory over Cotoure. His victory over Yvel was somewhat lack luster. He could not put away a guy with no ground game. Now Barnett is in the unhappy position of yelling “What about me?” Unfortunately everyone is yelling back; well what about you???

I haven’t been as convinced about Fedor recently, he looked sloppy against Arlovski, but maybe that will have shaken him into becoming even more dangerous! (to be fair he was awesome against Sylvia, showing he’s easily the best heavyweight striker – Judo/Sambo is his base but his boxing is awesome in speed, power and accuracy – for some reason didn’t show it until the final punch on Arlovski, who can be felled by a light breeze nowadays!)

People always expect champs to slip up but it is possible to go a whole career without losing (I don’t count Fedor’s loss as a loss, should have been a N/C) – Benny “the Jet” Urquidez had a phenomenal record at kickboxing – 63-0 with 57 KO’s over 24 years (with a few similar controversial N/C’s). He says they were just his title defences and that he easily has a 200+ -0 record!

Fedor to kill brock at UFC 106 if Dana backs the fuck down and lets him do his bloody Sambo tournaments – more fighters are injured in training than in competition lately!!

even if josh wins i would still rather see fedor vs brock. i want to see barnett vs mir more than barnett vs brock. All that being said fedor will destroy josh.

by Blazy J on Jul 14, 2009 3:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Brock would kill both of them… 290lbs…. anyone 250 and below is like a baby to him. Think of you fighting your wife… thats the weight difference. I dont care if your wifes a black belt in anything your still going to win.

Well I’m 6’1" 200lbs and would bet everything I own that Cyborg would kick my ass so maybe you should come up with a new analogy. Or maybe you just proved everyone that says Fedor would school Brock’s point.

Fedor vs Cock Chestnar after Fedor destroys barnett. It will sell millions.

I don’t think Fedor will destroy Barnett. Josh is very underrated, sure he has had some unimpressive wins, but the guy is as tough as they come and has great wrestling skills. Very dangerous opponent, wouldn’t be surprised if he pulls it out, although I’ll be a bit dissappointed.

Barnett can win and he IS the biggest threat to Fedor Brock is one dimensional all you gotta worry about is his top game(wrestling) Barnett would Handle brock in the first round if they fought we all saw how shiity a wrestler brock is vs Randy Barnett is bigger stronger and would whoop that ass hardcore style, with that being said Fedor is the man and more then likely wins.

by Khaos_Warrior on Jul 14, 2009 3:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Brock and. Fedor sounds great and eveything but how about:
FEDOR VS. OVEREEM
or
OVEREEM VS. BROCK?

Overeem will beat Fedor when they meet.

by rockwell on Jul 14, 2009 4:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Barnett is pissed I like it. I know there a lot of Fedor fans out there but Barnett is no joke and the best fighter Fedor has faced since NOG. As far as Brock Fedor would get destroyed and make you all cry like Mir fans are right now so you better hope that he never signs outherwise his record would be tarnished with more than one loss LOL.

Fedors Management won’t allow Fedor to fight any to ranked fighter. Why when they can collect on former top ranked fighters…..I see a Couture fight coming next for Fedor LOL.

Wait! What about the obvious challenger to either Fedor OR Brock.

Jose Canseco.

by nobody on Jul 14, 2009 5:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Just look at Barnett. He is high in the rankings, because he fights cans. Outside of the UFC, the tough HW’s are Rogers, Overeem, Werdum (if he shows up without an eating contest during training), and that’s really about it. Looking at Barnetts record, he sucks. Fedor will maul, or Barnett will win, everyone will make excuses for Fedor, and noone will care about Barnett.

Another thing I just thought about, when Cole Miller beat Junie Browning, he walked over to him and started yelling shit at him. Then in the post fight interview he went on to bash Browning some more. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?!?!?! How come NOBODY is talking about that, but when Brock does it “Oh my god! This guy has no respect! He is bad for the sport!!!!” Fucking hilarious. People are such hypocrites, it’s fucking amazing.

People say brock will win because he’s 4and1 (HE WILL NEVER IN LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLIIIIIIIIIIIFFFFFFFFFFFEEEEEEEEE BEAT FEDOR)
Fedor Has More Experience Than Brock And Have you seenn him fight C.O.B = What The F***
LoL Brock Beating Fedor Pish Posh ANd DREAM ON

by devindooo on Jul 15, 2009 3:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

LOL that was a very naive comment. The simple fact is Brock has the advantage with his physical tools and great mentality in the ring. Fedor has the superior defence and all around offensive ability and great mentality in the ring = great fight. For any one to say either one of these guys will win for sure is just foolish. But before we get ahead of our self Fedor must get past the bestfighter he faced since NOG, Barnett.

by Beaver on Jul 15, 2009 8:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Damn Fedor fans are insane. To think Brock would not be a legitimate challenge for him is crazy. Brock moves as fast as the best 205’ers. He is a gorilla a pure physical threat. If Linland was a threat to him, he basically won that fight by holding on to the top rope like a 12 year old holding onto himself after discovering the wonders of porn, what makes you think Brock wouldn’t be a threat? He is a legitimate threat to any HW contender. Speed, power, size, superior wrestling is a threat to anyone in any weight class. I realize Fedor is a amazing fighter, but he has fought nothing but circus freaks and promotional has beens over the last few years.

If the match ever comes to fruition, and i hope it does, i badly want to see brock talk smack to fedor’s face and then watch fedor just stand their cool, calm & collected with a boyish grin knowing that in the ring he will eat lesnar alive. Fedor will use brock as an appetizer for his post-fight vodka shot.

by Alex on Jul 15, 2009 10:19 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

On a more serious note, i do concede lesnar is a big strong guy and he will most definitely present a problem for any fighter in his weight division, but i can’t see him beating fedor, at least not now — maybe in the future (once he accumulates the necessary skills to become a well rounded fighter). I mean c’mon, he was lucky against couture. Sure he knocked him out and out-muscled him a bit, but before the knockout Couture (taking into account his age) wasn’t doing too badly. I reckon had it gone a tad longer lesnar would have been worn out. I mainly want to watch fedor v. brock to see how fedor handles the takedown and if he does get taken down, how he will fend on his back.

by Alex on Jul 15, 2009 10:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

FEDOR WILL WIN TO BARNETT, IT WOULD BE A GREAT FIGHT, BUT HE WILL WIN, AND LETS HOPE WE SEE FEDOR AGAINST LESNAR, IT WILL BE CLASH OF THE TITANS, BUT FEDOR HAS AN EDGE ON LERSNAR, HE HAS TECNIQUE, AN HE IS STRONG, GREAT FIGHT TO SEE
