Big props to machida for continuing to work on his english. Wish Anderson would do the same.
by Adam T. on Jul 13, 2009 10:49 AM EDT reply actions
Yeah it seems like Anderson could give a damn to learn more English.
by Kimura88 on Jul 13, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions
Exactly Kimura, Anderson’s attitude has changed from when he first became champ. I believe is lack of desire to learn English is just another part of the arrogance that he seems to display now.

Me and a bunch of friends were at an event in Canada last month and had the chance to meet Anderson as he was there supporting some of his fighters. The guy is a total prima donna douche. Respectively.
by jay on Jul 13, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions
I used to buy the whole “Anderson is a class act” charade. But his non-verbal communication speaks for itself.
by Kimura88 on Jul 13, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions
i think pretty much everyone sees anderson for what he is now… a classless jerk who doesnt care about anything but himself and does the bare minimum to win his fights
by brendan on Jul 13, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions
How can you say that about a guy who thinks his best match up is a clone of himself? He’s just being real guys. Not to mention the fact that he’s the P4P best “hand dancer” in all of MMA.
by Canucklehead on Jul 13, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions
The more English he knows, the better Dana can market him in the states.
by mr-fancypants on Jul 13, 2009 10:51 AM EDT reply actions
The best fights by the best fighters are what we all want english or not, but it definitely helps when they can speak at least some. It helps show their personality a lot more. And anybody who criticizes the imperfect statements that they make is an a**hole. My wife is hispanic and she has just learned english well in the last 3-4 years. She always thought she was dumb because she couldn’t form the sentences correctly and I would tell her that she is a lot smarter than most people who only know english.
by Adam T. on Jul 13, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions
That is very true. I could not imagine being bilingual, I always find it very impressive when someone knows more than 1 language. GSP knows 3 I think, French, English and Portuguese. Very impressive.

Did I miss something, I’d didn’t hear him say anything about Henderson??
by Ed C on Jul 13, 2009 10:55 AM EDT reply actions
That’s how quick Machida is, whilst you were thinking he counter-attacked your brain with a Henderson comment and was out of there before you realised… Damn he’s good. ;)

class act and imo “THE” best P4P fighter there is….and I’m the biggest GSP fan out there

Not a lot said really, Soares thinks GSP would struggle against Silva. Machida had pretty limited English so just basically said GSP looks good and has good wrestling but his Kyo Kushin Karate is not the same as Machida Karate, nothing groundbreaking…
by Jimrod on Jul 13, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions
I love how cocky soares is getting. Is it a tough fight for GSP, damn right, Spider is a lot bigger. Is it such a tough fight that Soares should be acting like GSP doen’t even belong in the cage with Anderson? Of course not. We’ve all seen how dominating Silva can be, but we’ve also seen him not look so hot. GSP got KO’d by Serra a while back but that happens, people get caught as they say. Since then has the guy even lost a round? He fights top flight competition in his weight class, guys that are all thought to pose big threats to his title and he just walks right through them. Silva has done that a few times but of late he’s looked pretty human and one could make an argument that he hasn’t been fighting the same caliber of guys as GSP his last few fights (since hendo who took a round of him and he didn’t even look his best).
Anderson is a force, no question, but he has been beaten and the longer he rests on his laurels the sooner he will be beat again. I’m not saying GSP will be the guy, but he certainly has a better shot than Soares and Silva would have you believe.
by Hal on Jul 13, 2009 11:19 AM EDT reply actions
I would definitely give GSP a shot. He would take his time to pack on some muscle as he indicated in his postfight interview. It would be difficult for Anderson to keep GSP from taking him down and I think GSP is quick enough and smart enough to avoid any big damage on the feet. As cocky as Soares and Anderson are getting is there anybody who wouldn’t mind seeing Anderson’s face get bloodied up a little from some GSP elbows?
by Adam T. on Jul 13, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions
Ed Soares is a total douchebag as is anderson silva… silva’s weakness is his wrestling and thats what gsp is best at… not to mention gsp’s striking looked better than alves’ did the other nite… gsp definitely has a pretty good chance at beating silva, no question!
by brendan on Jul 13, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions
dont forget that both hendo and fat ass lutter had anderson mounted. what if gsp were to mount anderson????
by Egads on Jul 13, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree that Soares is a bit too cocky on Silva’s behalf. I’m a huge GSP fan and as much as I’d like to see him beat Silva, it concerns me that GSP walks around at 185 whereas Silva’s walking weight is around 215. That’s a huge difference and we’ve learned through GSP vs Penn and Mir vs Brock that size matters when size has skill.

machida is pure class….and unlike anderson silva, he actually makes an attempt to learn the english language.
by lefthook187 on Jul 13, 2009 11:41 AM EDT reply actions
how good is Gsp’s karate?
Machida: “well its ok, id still woop his a$$” hahaha
anderson used to be humble and what not, as of late? obviously not. buttttt machida has been a favortie since his UFC day one. ive been on the bandwagon for a while. i dont see how shogan can beat him anywhere. TBH i never watched any of his pride fights except for all the crazy down kicks they show on highlights. that seems to be his high point, hes deff not the same fighter
by wingblade on Jul 13, 2009 11:45 AM EDT reply actions
LOL Anderson has 2 lackluster fights and now everyone hates him? As an American I could less if he wants to learn English thats his right. Its not like he has a service or contruction job here in the states and needs to be capable of speaking english. Fight is all I care about when it comes to Anderson. Also American English is the hardest language to learn, there are so many words coming from Latin and English its almost a slang. Alot of people have a hard time learning it. Thats why we have 4 million imigrants that cant speak english
by lokie on Jul 13, 2009 11:58 AM EDT reply actions
Glad somebody said it. The Anderson hate wagon is just getting ridiculous now. So what if he doesn’t want to divert time he could be using to, I don’t know, train for his next fight to learn English (which, as you rightly point out, is no easy feat).
More power to Machida for wanting to expand his linguistic horizons, but this in no way should reflect negatively on Silva. I’m curious, just how many American fighters make the effort to learn another language when fighting for foreign promotions…

Nope just not now, Ive always hated him and i hope Forrest bests his a$$.
by Lester The Pimp on Jul 13, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with Lester , I hope Silva loses also and I disliked him before the Cote fight so my reasons arent based on his last 2 fights.
The guy just doesnt do it for me , maybe its all his Pink sweaters he wears too the events hes not fighting.. Yes im that shallow.

Love to watch Silva fight, just think he and his manager are getting a little too big for their britches.
by Hal on Jul 13, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions
I think from UHC 100, GSP has a shot, and I think the Silva camp knows it.
I do have a concern however, that GSP is relying too much on his ground game and takedowns. I saw an opening in the fight with Alves where Alves missed a kick, spun around, and was stationary in front of GSP. GSP could have blasted him, but DIDN’T. GSP has great boxing and striking and he needs to get back to it.
Having said that, i do think GSP can slip through Silva’s guard.
by DAMN! on Jul 13, 2009 12:51 PM EDT reply actions
Gsp is tailor made for strikers, one day people will wake up and relize this. Gsp’s worst nightmare is someone who is a better grappler than him not much else. After UFC 100 I could see a lot of strikers sweating over that match. You rush gsp with your hands, boom your down, you kick, boom your on you back. Guys gsp isn’t just a wrestler, he’s was asked what was his favorite way to finish a fight and he said by submission. Gsp doesn’t just take down guys for take down sake he does it for a few reasons.
1.It makes your opponent striking less effective as they’ll be more worried about take downs.
2.You can’t submit a guy standing up which is why he takes them down.
3.Your in a superior position to sub or ground and pound. I completely don’t agree with those who say gsp is just a lay and pray fighter. He always trys to finish fights, mixes his striking with take downs better than anyone in the business, and is improving on his bjj.
Anderson silva isn’t asking for gsp and gsp isn’t asking for anderson silva, I say leave it alone for a while. Penn was after gsp and so gsp and the UFC just let it happen much to penns disappointment. I’m not sure this fight is such a great idea, the last super fight turned into a super disaster.
by nathan on Jul 13, 2009 2:54 PM EDT reply actions
I agree , im not a fan of super fights… If your going too do one , I think they should drop the belt first before changing classes … Locking up 2 champs for 1 fight is pretty ridiculous imho..
by Dayzah on Jul 13, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions
DAMN! alot of things gsp didn’t do in the fight had to due with his injured groin.
by nathan on Jul 13, 2009 2:56 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah, groin and elbow. I just hope for his sake he takes some risks and mixes it up even more. What happens if someone CAN stuff his takedowns? I say that thinking he also won the striking game Sat night as well, but still….it can get risky for him if he relies too much on it.
by DAMN! on Jul 13, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions
I heard a couple comments before mine that a few people were saying everyone is hating on anderson. I have never bought into this guy since hes come to the UFC. I firmly believe that he has not fought top level competition in the middle weight division other then hendo,, which henlost the first round. I really dont understand why so many people are on his nuts. hes cocky, hes a counterpuncher, hes boring to watch now, haha he greases straight up before he fights, hes a dud. the middle weight division has been lackluster for awhile until now! With Mia, Nate, and Hendo back in the mix things may get interesting and hopefully one of these guys can finish him. But the ufc has done a lot to protect their investment and thats why hes even being considered for P4P. the real pound for poung guys are GSP, Torres, Machida in ufc and obviously Fedor is above the rest.
There is no doubt in my mind that GSP could handle anderson. The spider would do is usual nothing for the first 2 minutes, showing off kinda or whatever the hell he does and while hes moving his head and throwing his hands around like a tool gsp will shoot take him down, and control his ass. then round 2 he ll get mad do some kicks, gsp will immediately catch one take him down and beat him down for round 2. round 3 anderson wont want to kick anymore, he ll be extremely defensive adn run like a little chicken shit somehmore until he slips and gsp will take him down. round 4 the spider gets squashed!

185 lb ODDS GSP vs SPIDER ??
I would make SPIDER a -180 favorite.
GSP has never fought anyone as tall/long. SILVA would keep GSP at distnace with his stand up, making it difficult for GSP to score takedowns. As good as GSP is on his feet, I think SPIDER is better…more powerful at least. I’m a huge GSP fan but I don’t think he wins this one. What do you guys think??
by MMASHARP on Jul 13, 2009 5:39 PM EDT reply actions
I think you are wrong. Silva is 3 inches taller, but he only has 1 inch reach on GSP. Silva is a slow starter and rarely throws anything until he gauges his opponents timing. GSP likes to overwhelm his opponents in the opening seconds. Just like with Alves, GSP won’t eat a knee when he goes for a TD, because he always catches his opponents off balance. This won’t be the first time a great striker( with no wrestling) didn’t look so great against a great wrestler. You have to factor in that Anderson’s striking won’t be anywhere near as dangerous when he is constantly getting dumped on his head. GSP can beat Silva and Ed Soares knows it.
by Gord on Jul 16, 2009 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions
I was a GSP fan up until his last 2 fights!Dofans really want to see him shoot for take downs and hump people all the time? IF he is so good and sure of his skills why doesn’t he trade? its obvious that his whole game plan for the Alves fight was to get the takedown and score the points and lay on his ass and give him little pitty patty shots. Obviously Alves took them better than Penn. I wish Alves didn’t have such short arms, 6 inches is alot to give up. As far as Anderson goes he seems not to be cocky but bored. He will definitly enjoy a huge reach advantage over GSP and people need to realize that Anderson attacks from every where. All you guys that say GSP will take him down might be wrong. What happens if Silva catchesGSP with a knee as his shooting in? I bet it will throw GSP game a little off. I think the Fight will be close but Silva definitly will have the all around edge. Hendo is considered a great wrestler and didn’t do much with that.
by Danny_c on Jul 13, 2009 6:41 PM EDT reply actions
Yes Danny, he will enjoy the HUGE reach advantage of one whole inch. Second Alves’ game is all about striking, and his solid take down defense, which clearly wasn’t an issue for GSP. So why wouldn’t GSP take the fight to where Alves is absolutely useless, he didn’t have to worry about anything once he got him down. Just shows that GSP can stick with game plans, unlike many fighters who have trouble doing so once in the octagon. As for Silva, I hope they fight outside of their weight classes. Do something like 180, it will obviously help St Pierre in gaining that weight, but not be a ton of weight for Silva to cut. You can bet that if GSP is to go up a weight class, similar to Silva he’d have a warm-up fight or two. I say they bypass it and fight at a neutral weight. No one really cares about the belt in this fight, like GSP has said, its about proving it to himself, and I am sure Silva would feel the same way. But rather than to himself, to the world that he truly is the top PFP fighter. After Swick wins (i hope) and then takes on GSP (and loses) then it sets things up for this fight. GSP will be fighting first, then followed by Silva a month or so after, therefor allowing GSP to have that extra month on top of normal training to put on the weight. Time which he said he would need to have as he wants to do it the right way.
