Does this pic from St. Pierre's Wednesday meeting with Mark Coleman give any GSP fans cause for concern going into his Saturday night fight against Thiago Alves?

My concern is GSP wearing that Lacoste shirt with his red biker shorts. You think GSP ever walks into a restaurant just wearing his tights?

looks like bursitis, he should have had that drained already and on meds.

by roy on Jul 10, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Definitely bursitis. It’s a common overuse injury for wrestlers. It’s an enlarged bursa sack, which can cause pain, limited ROM, and consequently reduced hand speed.

by themattking on Jul 10, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

tHmetking: THANKS! THats what I like to hear!

War Alves!

by John G on Jul 10, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Definatly a bursitis. Hopefully not infected. Should have it drained before the fight and feel fine.

by Dr. G on Jul 10, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I must confess this development has me slightly concerned. I hope it hasn’t prevented him from training like he usually does. I reckon if it was really bad he’d have postponed the fight … but still…

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 10, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

No way is postponing a fight an option for this event. If this had been any other time, i think they would have pushed it to a different PPV. Kinda like Nog vs Mir…..couldnt lose that main event, was too important for the card. Otherwise Nog would not have fought.

by Big D on Jul 10, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Looks like there is some extra bone in there of something.

by DSmith on Jul 10, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

The elbow issue is likely a ruptured bursis sack. What is showing is fluid build up. This is not an umcommon thing, and should NOT affect GSP in the fight.

by CL on Jul 10, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Good, thanks CL. I noticed this in some pics yesterday as well and thought GSP had some particularly pointy elbows.

Just more surface area to smash into Alves’ face while he’s helpless on his back, flopping liike a baby seal.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 10, 2009 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah CL, I’ve had my knees and elbows filled with fluid.. It definitely affects your movement

by RoB on Jul 10, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Lesnar became UFC heavyweigt champ wth a brain full of fluid – so Georges should be OK.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 10, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think this will affect his game unless it changes his hand speed because of inablity to bend the elbow. It looks a little larger than it should but I think he’s probably fine for the fight. I think where this will affect him is in his GnP game but I don’t really think that matters because he has many different options than just elbows on the ground. I sincerly hope this is not an injury because I hate it when fighters fight with injuries. They are always quick to say I was injured before this fight and thats why I lost… well then I hope you learned your lesson and don’t fight injured again jackass!

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jul 10, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s a malignant tumor. It will explode mid-match, and GSP will win by squirting elbow cancer on Alves’ face.

by MmaBrawl on Jul 10, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh boy, now he will really be trying to hump Thiago. Alves TD defense better be on point.

by BNF on Jul 10, 2009 11:35 AM EDT reply actions

Can you really sit there and imply that GSP “humps” his way to victories?

by JaSwin420 on Jul 10, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

The implication was that that bad elbow will only for limited strikes on the feet and limited attack in the gaurd, therefore his plan for victory, humping.

by BNF on Jul 10, 2009 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

My apologies. However I do disagree. I don’t think it will make much a difference.

by JaSwin420 on Jul 11, 2009 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

That looks nasty,

by Dixon on Jul 10, 2009 11:36 AM EDT reply actions

It’s not a cause for cencern because GSP has it almost all the time. It looks a little bit worse this time but it’s not a big deal.

I Think it’s maids elbow and it’s very easy to treat

by zachy on Jul 10, 2009 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

You’re thinking of maids knee. Which is an inflamed bursa of the knee from all the cleaning while on the knees. Nurse maid elbow is actually a dislocation of the radial head of the elbow typically an injury of young childen who get yanked by the hand by a nurse maid.

by Dr. G on Jul 10, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

very good dr.g yes nurse maids elbow could wind up with a gun stock deforimty.

by roy on Jul 10, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

You may be right. Either way it’s not bone growth at most it’s probably just swelling. I doubt it’s going to affect him.

by zachy on Jul 10, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe Ken-Flo has shared the secret of “hellbows” with GSP.

In training camp they have been sharpening the tip of the elbow like an old fashioned pencil sharpener.

He’ll be fine.

by Big Zino on Jul 10, 2009 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

by Nick J on Jul 10, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

lol I don’t get the cauliflower reference in the headline…but that definitely looks like it dislocated or something.

I guess we’ll have to see if he throws many right hands…

by Dredg XI on Jul 10, 2009 11:44 AM EDT reply actions

It all depends on how his elbows feel. If they are painful to the touch, he is in trouble.

I am curious to know exactly what GSP has been elbowing during training camp. Most of the time, fighters practice GnP elbows on a heavy bag laying on the mat.

So I guess we know have 2 questions heading into this fight.

1) Will GSP’s lumpy elbows cause discomfort and keep him from throwing his big elbows from the guard?

2) Will Thiago Alves make weight?

Has anyone heard about Alves’s current weight recently???

by ViolentMike on Jul 10, 2009 11:46 AM EDT reply actions

Yea he said he was 183ils yesterday at the press Conf. He said he is usually 188il but is ahead of what he thought he would be.

by Crazy on Jul 10, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Oops i ment 183lbs

by Crazy on Jul 10, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Great news, not only is Alves looking good weight wise but GSP is potentially coming into this fight injured. Don’t get me wrong, I want Thiago to beat GSP at his best so that there’s no excuses but staying healthy is a part of training and if he gets injured then fights anyway, it’s his own fault if he loses.

by David W-S on Jul 10, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

You said ils instead of lbs in your above comment.

Sorry had to do it.

by Dr_D_Sanchez on Jul 10, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

yes that is bursitis and yes it hurts and, yes it will be a factor I asure you.

by bellio on Jul 10, 2009 11:49 AM EDT reply actions

Wow, that’s cool you can tell that from just a picture…why do I bother going to the doctor ever. Just kidding, but really you can’t tell what it is just from a picture.

by MM_Eh on Jul 10, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah you pretty much can in this case, it looks like bursitis

by roy on Jul 10, 2009 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Ummm, no you can’t. He could have periosteal new bone formation or any number of soft tissue conditions. People have been saying that his elbow has looked odd for a while now so who knows what it could be.

by MM_Eh on Jul 10, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not saying it’s not bursitis, all I’m saying is that it may not be.

by MM_Eh on Jul 10, 2009 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if it is bursitis it’s nothing a cortazone(sp?)
shot won’t cure for the 25 minutes he needs it.

by Big Zino on Jul 10, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah its burisits

He could have periosteal new bone formation or any number of soft tissue conditions.

yes causing bursitis.

by roy on Jul 10, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t remember where it was, but I noticed his weird elbow shape a year or so ago. I think it’s just how his bones are structured. Looks weird but I doubt it’s anything else beyond that. That could be painful for Alves though, if smashed into his face. :P

by Moi on Jul 10, 2009 11:52 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t ever remember seeing his elbow look like that before. It may just be the angle, but it doesnt look too good.

I don’t think it’ll factor much. Sure, GSP’s elbows are dangerous, but it wont stop him from doing everything else. And its not like Alves can attack the elbow.

by Stryker on Jul 10, 2009 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Moi I agree with you on this one. I noticed the same thing on his elbow before the Penn fight. It is funny that all of a sudden it is an issue. Trying to create something out of nothing.

by MMAFan1981 on Jul 10, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s bursitis and it will be a factor. google bursitis and see how common it is for wrestlers and MMA athletes.

by MMAFan1981 on Jul 10, 2009 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

His elbows stick out a little, but he definately does not have that all the time, it is not how his elbows are made. I have trained with him and I would remember touching an extra head coming out of his arm. Hope it does not affect his riddum.

by theCloser on Jul 10, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I noticed his elbow during the Spike show (can’t remember the name of the show)…if it’s any consulation to GSP fans, I screwed my elbow up years ago by sliding into a goal post during a hockey game and it swelled up like GSP’s is. Broken bone chips floating around in my elbow aside (years later), it doesn’t bother me…but, I can predict when it’s going to snow better than the local weatherman.

I’m sure he’s fine.

by introvert on Jul 10, 2009 12:00 PM EDT reply actions

yep…if if was too bad I’m sure he’d pull out of fight…or at least I’d hope he would

Look up “Olecranon Bursitis” in your search engines for some details on this condition. We should hope for GSP’s sake that this is just a coincidence that he elbow looks like this. Something tells me thought that it can only be one thing.

well. val kilmer had a nasty elephant elbow in HEAT when he woke up on Deniro’s floor after he stormed out on Ashley Judd and went out drinking and brawling. and all i know is it didnt affect his ability to pull off a huge bank robbery and wild gun battle in the streets of LA. plus he was the only one who got away at the end.

by the spyder on Jul 10, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

I hope GSP is 100%, but I don’t think he’ll lose if he’s not. Ofcourse we wont find anything out if he wins. He destroyed Fitch and Penn, who IMO are both better than Alves. So, I think he can beat Alves with a little swelling on his elbow.

If he is injured I can see GSP not pulliing out because its UFC 100. Hopefully this doesnt come back to bite him in the ass.
