I don’t understand why everyone is surprised that the UFC won’t let fighters sign with them if they get into a competing video game.
UFC is a business, they want to make money.
If any strikeforce guys or smaller org guys sign then they won’t be in the UFC. That is fine because the UFC owns the UFC.
The UFC wants to sell as many games as they can and they will have a better opportunity if they black ball the EA sports game and no one can sign with them. This seems like perfect business to me.
Honestly, how do you think Bill Gates got rich? By allowing as many people and software companies to compete with him or squashing the competition?
by Bennie Blanco on Jul 10, 2009 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the thing about MMA is that the business is too americanized, just look at what they’ve done to soccer in America! those idiots have no idea about what the sport is and have a whole different system in MLS than any other real football league in Europe, there’s too much money and too much competition involved, HOllywood here we come..
I’ve never seen a football game where they have just one league in the game! that would be a horrible idea and that’s just not how it works in football cause it’s a sport not a thing where leagues compete…
by RoB on Jul 10, 2009 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
American soccer and Euro soccer isn’t a fair comparison. U.S. soccer is at least two steps below EPL, Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga and probably several other leagues. Try the NFL and the EPL.
by PW on Jul 10, 2009 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah i could but NFL/American football is f’ed up too, It’s the only major league in the world of the sport, and what i meant about MLS that is the system they have not the quality, the business side of the sport is just different in America..
by RoB on Jul 10, 2009 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So you would realy want 4 or 5 different football leagues in the US. NFL and CFL are North American sports. Who cares if they don’t play the same sport in other countries. If you have more leagues you water down the talent and the entertainment value. If Soccer had one main league that ruled the sport and all the best players were in it the entertainment level would go way up. Soccer is an old sport easy to play but has much less entertainment value. Sure if you love a team and are a die hard fan you care to watch. Over half the people wo watch the NFL don’t even know all the rules but it’s entertaining to watch. MMA has huge entertainment value but besides a few fights hear and their realy the UFC is the only company that is consistantly entertaining.

This is one thing I can agree with you on. I don’t like any of those practices either. I hope by the media and fellow maniacs showing their disgust with such ridiculous rules, the UFC and Dana will change their stance on these topics.

Dana won’t change all he cares about is his business and his money, he F’s the sport and the fighters that are outside of his comapny!

There are times when he’ll back down. He brought Randy back, he didn’t fire Fitch. Or the Fertitas can just go over his head too. I don’t know but I hope the spotlight and bad publicity shows them that those are unethical business practices.

He did, but he then set him up to lose against Lesnar… The truth is that they are all about having big fights and making money, there’s no fair system or like a sports league at all!.. all it comes down to is how much they can make for each show

I know this and this is why I don’t hate Dana. I understand that his a business man and promoter first. He’s not MMA nor is the UFC. I don’t expect him to try and better MMA before he tries to better the UFC. So in understanding how he is, I know what to expect from him and I think the fighters as well should be able to do the same. Things like this however cross the line and they make me mad because a fighter cannot fight a company he doesn’t belong to. I think however their main goal is to prevent the game from being made, if they can do that then there are no worries. If they cannot then they either have to stand by their threat making them huge A holes or they have to back down and sign a fighter who signed the game deal. I personally think they will back down if the game is made. I think many fighters (like Fedor, Cung Lee, Frank, Aoki, JZ, Jochiam, Nick D, Josh Thompson, ect.) signing this game deal will be too much for the UFC to deny admission. Tell me if one of those guys signed the game deal and then had an open contract the UFC wouldn’t want to sign them?

Robert what’s your point? wear is also the word you were looking for..
MMA is the sport and to try to prevent an MMA game from being created is crazy, it gets the sport out there and im sure EA Sports would make a great game, and if they’re so worried about that happening then why didn’t they just sign up with EA Sports instead of THQ!..

I don’t know about the rest of the world, but here even superstars don’t control their own images. LeBron can pimp Gatorade, Nike and whatever else, but he can’t start his own line of T-shirts independent of the NBA. The league controls the licensing, so the NBA gets a pretty sizable cut of LeBron merchandise, Kobe merchandise, etc. It sounds like Dana is at least trying to do the same thing.

Sorry, I don’t spell check for you guys…Cross promotions would never work nobody does it in sports why should MMA? The NY Mets don’t play the best team from Japan in the middle of the season….. samething for MMA…. again why should we care how MMA is recieved as a sport in main stream?

The funny thing is that all the Dana lovers here don’t realize that if the UFc goes through with this threat against fighters who deal with EA Sports over this video game…the UFC’s talent pool drops dramatically. That’s why I run a successful business…by looking ahead 5 to 10 years from now.
If EA Sports signs a whole bunch of prospects to video game deals, and the UFC sticks to their guns…who is going to fight for the UFC in 5 to 10 years? Maybe Dana doesn’t give a shit as long as he makes his money now…ala WWE.
Fact of the matter is, the UFC is milking every dollar they can out of guys like you while the getting is good, and would rather milk the money from video games than from a talented pool of future fighters.
One more step toward a Fighter’s Union.

Sounds like you might not, otherwise you would understand Zuffa’s intentions.

In my experience, most people that feel the need to brag about how successful they are or how much they have normally lead lives that are quite the opposite.

GSP does not look particularly impressed with Thiago’s performance. GSP also needs a new suit already.

i got alves by tko here, as long as he stops the takedown hes got this one in the bag
by markg on Jul 9, 2009 8:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Totally. As long as Alves does what better wrestlers than him have tried and utterly failed repeatedly to do over the last, oh, five years or so, he’ll be in GREAT shape.
Aves’s striking will be more tentative because he’ll be so worried about the takedown. GSP mixes it up so well and is too hard to time and predict coming in, and Alves won’t be landing any knees when GSP shoots. He’s getting the red-headed step-child treatment on his back all night long, and once GSP wears him out he’ll start smashing him on his feet. Then it’s back to the ground for a submission. Curtains close on Alves in the third round or sooner.
WAR GSP!
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 9, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I got Alves by TKO in this one too, he’s a great counterpuncher way better than anyone GSP has ever fought, and he probably has better takedown attempts than any of them too, or maybe not but he’s not overconfident in his wrestling ability so he’s gonna be prepared for every td attempt from Georges and maybe stuff 2 or so and that could be enough..

by Robert(1) on Jul 10, 2009 8:15 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Naw man. GSP will do what he pleases in the wrestling game. If Alves has any chance it will be with a lucky strike or a knee.
by deadnik on Jul 9, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Totally agree.
GSP has out done the best wrestlers at their own game.
Matt Hughes and Josh Koscheck have pretty deep pedigrees and it was almost silly how easy GSP tossed them around.
If Thiago wins this it won’t be because he stuffs a take down… I think a well timed knee or “lucky” if you can call it luck…one punch.
by Big Zino on Jul 10, 2009 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
alves couldn’t tko koscheck, and kosckeck played alves’s game, standing and banging. GSP ain’t playing alves’s game, he ain’t gonna stand and bang. and he ain’t getting tko’s by a guy that couldn’t tko kos.
by pancake head on Jul 10, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You make it sound as though Koscheck has a glass/suspect chin! Koscheck is as duarable as they come. One person Paul Thiago has Ko’d Koscheck in 16 fights. GSP has been tko’d by Matt Serra which is his only TKO to date. On the other hand Alves has TKO’d guys with reputable chins in Lytle, Hughes, Koscheck, and Parisyian. As long as Alves can stuff a few shots by GSP he has a chance of landing the big shot. This is GSP biggest opponent to date, strength wise and weight wise. This will be the first time GSP is walking in the smaller fighter. That all weighs in. I am not completely sold on Alves winning this fight, but he is who I hope wins. Also next to BJ Penn this is the best/purest striker he has stepped into the ring with. He has the hands to change the outcome of the fight in a single moment.
by Da Monkey on Jul 10, 2009 8:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good points, but I believe Fitch was actually a little bigger then GSP and I thought the Lytle fight was stopped due to cuts?
by SilasM on Jul 10, 2009 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
doesnt matter if alves ways a few more pounds. fitch was about 6ft tall, and sure he weighed about 10 lbs more at fight time, but GSP threw him around like a rag doll, dont forgett GSP trains against HW olympic wrestlers, he is going to be way stronger, and quicker, than alves, combine that with his greater athleticism, footwork, longer reach, he will pick apart him apart, and if alves tries kick he will be taken down. GSP has no problems taking down much better fighters than alves, such as rashad evans, marquardt, or jardine, which he takes down at will in his camp and they cant even take him once. I think people will be shocked how easily GSP destroys alves, taking him down, holding him there, and picking him apart in the standup. Alves will not win a single round.

Not counting out Alves at all because he has a chance for sure but I just see St. Pierre being the much more intelligent fighter and pulling the victory, which ever way that is I don’t know but unless there is a flash knockout I don’t see Alves being able to do it.

I’ve always looked at a ‘flash KO’ as a fighter being out for a split-second and then quickly recovering. Not as a descriptor of a sudden, fight-ending KO as Edgecrusher’s post suggests.

st. pierre is going to school alves. alves is a dangerous, bad dude, but st. pierre is so ON every aspect of mma, including striking. will he stand with thiago? probably not, but i don’t think alves is THAT much better than st. pierre in striking, especially if you consider how his performance stacked up against a b-level striker in josh koscheck, he took that fight on very short notice and did alot better than i think most people expected in the standup. st. pierre is way ahead of kos standing, takedowns, clinch, everything. alves may have a couple of good rounds, but i HIGHLY doubt he can hang with st. pierre for 5 rds of unpredictable pressure and riddum.

my prediction? as soon as this fight hits the ground, count on a gnp stoppage from gsp. alves has shown zero game off his back and if anything can be gleaned from gsp’s last few fights, his opponents can count on spending time on their backs; a lot of time.

i think they’re hyping up alves to make it seem like it will be a very even match, but he really doesn’t have much more than a puncher’s chance. he is going to get taken down at will, and we all know gsp is going to spend a couple of rounds smothering, gnp-ing, and softening thiago up until alves gasses enough to the point where gsp will have the advantage on the feet. effective? yes. exciting? meh.

At this high a level the smallest mistake could end the night for either guy. This is a very interesting fight for me and over shadows the rest of them for myself.
