Brock Lesnar: Respect is for losers

Props: Yahoo Sports
Quoteworthy:
"I didn’t have any respect for Randy [Couture], I didn’t have any respect for Heath [Herring], I don’t have any respect for Frank. There’s going to be a winner, there’s going to be a loser. As soon as you step in and have any respect for your opponent, I think you become the loser a hell of a lot sooner."
UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar dismisses the existence of respect for the opponents within his division despite already holding a submission loss to Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir. Lesnar and "Murr" will clash in a title unification bout at UFC 100 that will also determine just how far the former NCAA and WWE wrestler has come in his still-young MMA career. If he manages to best Mir on July 11, there is a list of up-and-coming 265-pounders who are also waiting for their shot. One thing we can count on is them not getting any respect from the pasty-face goliath.

Lesnar thinks this way because he is a giant douche bag! It doesnt surprise me, the man is just a focking meathead! Seriously what other champion in the ufc would say something so dumb? I didnt like him before but now i really hope he gets a limb broken! Come on your a professional fighter why not start to act like it? Thats right he cant! He doesnt even understand why he should have respect for people who have been doing MMA years longer than him. 1st class douche bag!

I love how Mir talks about his striking like he’s fucking Anderson Silva all of a sudden.
“Sure, Couture can bother people with his hands… but I took out Nogueira.”
Hahahaha! Damn, I can’t stand either of these guys! As a person I dislike Brock more than Mir, but as a fight fan, I think we get better future fights if Brock wins and continues to grow his fake-ass aura of invincibility.

Actually Mac, Nog IS/WAS a proficient boxer. Since he’s joined the UFC though, Nog hasn’t been a proficient anything.
Mir’s kicks and punches have looked better than they used to in the training videos I’ve seen, but until Mir knocks out Brock, or for that matter anybody, he should stop talking about his amazing striking.
Seriously, Mir is getting smashed with redneck forearms and hammerfists until he loses consciousness. I can’t see him winning this fight. Lesnar gift-wrapped that ankle last time and even then he was getting desytroyed. Lesnar has improved more since that fight than Mir.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 9, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed, Mir is getting overconfident in his striking and that will get him knocked out!..
Nogueira was looking very impressive in his first UFC fight against Herring standing up until Herring landed that huge headkick, Nog hasn’t been the same ever since!

ABSOLUTELY WRONG… in no way shape or form does respecting your opponent make you a loser. Brock is obviously not a real martial artist, he is just a bully. I hope he gets subbed again!!!
by ---Caesar--- on Jul 9, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Brock only has a problem with disrespect if he feels it has been in any way displayed towards himself.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 9, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Don’t know if Lesnar understands the words that sometimes come out of his mouth. I don’t think he’s a bad guy. He just isn’t a very bright guy. I do expect him to win Saturday, but if there is an area he can be exposed, it will be his ability to think during the fight. How will he respond when he gets hit, or if Mir does happen to catch Lesnar in a position where he can be subbed?
by CL on Jul 9, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Brock isn’t dumb he’s just average and arrogant, but to tell you the truth I like him more now than I did in the beginning. He’s a no bullshit kinda’ guy that is following his dreams. He’s more relaxed in his interviews now and didn’t talk a ton of smack like Mir did leading into this fight.
by DAVE A on Jul 10, 2009 3:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My take from that is just that he doesn’t want to think about who they are or what they have accomplished (which is obviously more than him in mma) because it will play tricks with his mind. It’s a difficult thing to explain but he’s basically saying that any guy who steps into the octagon with him is just is opponent. Doesn’t matter if there name is Randy Couture or Joe Johnson. In my opinion, that is the attitude (that you are superior) you need to have to win. Nothing wrong with that. I like his attitude.
by Adam T. on Jul 9, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is kind of the way I was feeling about what he said. I think he respects his opponents (maybe not Mir though) outside of the cage, but inside he is just thinking about destroying them. If that is what he means, then I totally agree. It seemed that Chuck had people beaten before they even entered the octagon during his prime, they were just too worried about his power. I see a lot of the fighters that Feodr faces looking the same way. If you think that the other guy should win, then he will.

by gaara on Jul 9, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just can’t believe that Brock still thinks he is in the WWE. He is still trying to get “heat” from the crowd but at their expense. The only thing is that the harder he tries to be “the bad guy” the more the fans are going to finally catch on to his antics!!! So, this will either gain him fans in spite of him being a douche or it will just never, ever get him out of the era of his WWE days and the fans will never respect him or actually believe him to be a “REAL” fighter no matter who he demolishes. It is obviously up to him. Oh yeah, personally I couldn’t, can’t and will never be able to stand the guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you say so, Alpha. I seem to recall the Grove/Tanner fight being billed as a ‘loser leaves town’ match. Maybe his UFC career was on the line against Day as well, but it seems rather ant-climactic to have that stipulation two fights in a row.

i agree, to say that he doesn’t respect randy, would be like Kobe saying he doesn’t respect jorden. He is good at three things, big right hand, take downs, and hammer fist. I look at brock at being a bigger, less talented matt hughes.
by Blazy J on Jul 9, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Much less talented. You put half of the UFC at the same size as Brock, they would kill him. Matt was a lot better than those 3 things.
by neeko on Jul 9, 2009 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s actually not that bad a comparison. They’re both decorated wrestlers, both reknowned for their physical strength.
Hughes has much better BJJ and BJJ defence. Standing up though, I’d give the edge to Brock (sad, I know). At least he hurts people when he connects with a punch.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 9, 2009 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You guys don’t seem to grasp the meaning of the word talent; it refers to a gift or natural endowment of superior quality and originates from the units used to weigh precious metals. In fact to posses many talents would have been directly related to the weight of a valuable substance, in Brocks case high performing muscle mass.
Brock is by far the most talented fighter in MMA, what he lacks is skill (except in wrestling) and experience.
To say making other fighters the same size as Brock means they would kill him is ridiculous. Most people can’t cope with being over 240lbs and respiratory systems, ligaments, muscles and coordination all suffer, it’s why there are so few HW fighters. The world is full of heavy guys but it’s only a tiny percentage of them that can still perform at that weight.
Your argument is as ridiculous as turning it around and saying if Brock had all the skills and experience of the top half of the UFC he would be invincible. I’m betting it’s a bunch of small guys hating on Brock, Napoleon Syndrome at work here little dudes – get your self esteem in order and get off the Brock hate train.
by paniczoo on Jul 9, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think by your own definition, Bork would have a talented physique. Being a talented fighter is another matter. Having ‘superior’ muscle mass, even scientifically induced, does not mean he has more talent as a fighter than the rest of the UFC.
But that is pretty funny.
by KS on Jul 9, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
slow down buddy. to say he is the most talented fighter in the ufc, thats just bullshit. look at some of the fighters, anderson silva would crack his skull open, mir aleady subbmitted him, an if gsp were a heavy weight hed out wrestle him. are you an mma fan or a wwe fan? in like, 2 years he will be a good fighter i really believe that. but to say he’s better than everyone in mma now, please, put fedor in there and show him what its like to get ko’d hardcore.

From none other than Randy Couture: “It’s going to be harder for Frank to get him out of position, to get him excited, to get him where he needs to get him to submit him again, which leaves him standing up with a guy that size. That’s not a very good proposition.”

Hey, did you guys hear?…the UFC is now saying that anyone whose likeness appears in the EA Sports MMA videogame, will never be signed by the UFC. So, not only will their fighters get cut for not being in their game…..up-and-coming fighters will be black-balled by the UFC if they decide to deal with EA Sports.

Just goes to show you that the UFC is not interested in how deep their talent pool is going to be 5-10 years from now. They have the deepest talent now, but who’s to say that they won’t black-ball very good up-and-comers by this decision?
This just reeks of monopoly, and it sucks for everyone other than the owners of the UFC. Fighters make less money…gamers get less options…the UFC will have a shallower talent pool to draw from (if talented fighters sign with EA Sports)…UFC fans lose.

I wasn’t trying to insult you, im going to plead the Rampage defence – too much red bull and not enough sleep. Just that this rumour is obviously not true, and you picked it up and ran with it as if it was an official UFC press release, you even gave it a 10 year plan.
The UFC do more to nurture rising MMA talent than any other org. and its people like Affliction, Emilienenko and Electronic Arts who are trying to make a quick buck from the time, effort and money invested by Dana and the Fertitas, the UFC fighters and the fans into building the popularity of the sport.
If you are so averse to monopolies in commerce you should take a look at EA’s business practices (or move to a communist state) and Dana doesn’t have a God complex or delusions of grandeur, he owns and runs the most successful MMA orgs in the world, he has the right to be proud, confident and to protect his interests. Besides, a single top level org. is actually better for MMA fans – we would get to see all the best fights and don’t have to shell out another ppv just to see Fedor fight and line his pockets.

I’ve also heard them refered to has canned hams but the point is clear – I believe Fedor has the striking and submission to end Brock within 2 minutes of the 1st round. I don’t see the striking in Mir. Cain might pose a threat in the future if he could improve his BJJ.

Alpha… real shake-up in Hab-land, no? Has Gainey lost his marbles or will your team have a functioning set of testicles this year? Can’t wait to see how it all plays out!

lol(sigh)…Clean the house bro…so much change that I got problem to keep up!The way that i’m looking at it is…it might not be too bad after all.
Koivu was getting old,we got the Molson’s bros. who buy the team. The No. 1 target was Lecavalier but he got veto,so Gainey come up “short” in his attempt to make a trade for a big center and that’s the case by getting little taz devils Gionta and Gomez lol.
Gainey said he still has time to make a deal before the season start. Our first-rounder Louis Leblanc(center)is far from be ready to play,so something big got to happen before the season. We also signed defensemen’s Spacek and Gill, wingers Cammalleri all former Devils, they were use to a defensive-oriented system in New Jersey. That’s how Jacques Martin coach so…now he got Pearn,Muller as an assistant and Groulx as goalie coach. Not to bad situation.

yeah, the worst part is that this fight has a high likelihood of being stopped early. Frank likes to take hits while going for sub’s and brock likes to go apeshit with the short shots. B/c he’s so huge, the ref could easily jump in too soon. The “main event” could easily be the lamest fight, but I hope not.

I had read that full article over at Yahoo earlier this morning. I found it interesting that the UFC set thier Mir and Lesnar’s conferences an hour apart so there would be no “conflict”. But, they bump into each other in the hallway, shake hands, and briefly converse about thier children.

by realmma on Jul 9, 2009 2:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i think that is hilarious. he isn’t giving respect because he knows he can beat everyone else. i am not sure if he is worried about anyone else in the ufc right now. i think there are tons of what ifs in mir’s head which is why he has to flap his gums. i think brock knows this is in the bag for him and the more talking mir does the more pissed off brock is getting.

Wow, this dumb gorilla is really starting to annoy me. It is so hard to pick who I hate more, him or Mir, whenever Mir comes out and says something extremely cocky and ridiculous, Brock comes out and says something even more stupid. It seems like these two are just trying to out-do one another.
Can’t wait for the real HW Championship on August 1.

by The Juice! on Jul 9, 2009 2:10 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Brock is a beast. “I didn’t have any respect for Randy” See “didn’t” not “do not”. You can Respect someones skills set but not the person and that is what i think we are seeing here with Brock and that is fine. Kill them now and be buds after.
by Xsjado on Jul 9, 2009 2:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I am really starting to dislike Lesnar more and more. Considering the fact that I hated him to begin with leaves little room for this.
I think he is a bully and represents every reason I got in to martial arts to begin with as a teen. Can he beat Mir? Yes. Will he? Probably. Can Mir win? Of course.
Either way someone will eventually come along and tag this guy and send him packing. And when they do Ill be smiling and happy to see him go, just like sylvia before him.

I think Lesnar is becoming too cocky. Confidence is one thing but to completely dismiss your opponents skill and hardwork is just f’ed up. Lesnar needs to get his ass knocked out and humbled, but I doubt Mir will be the one to do it. Maybe Shane can.
If Mir does win, where does that leave Lesnar? Doubt there’ll be a Lesnar vs Mir 3.
by Jaime on Jul 9, 2009 2:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Brock represents the worst of MMA fans. They have no respect and they only cling onto who’s a champion or who’s on a winning streak.

by neeko on Jul 9, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Completely out of context, dumb article. People always use “respect” like “respect this guy’s chin, respect this guy’s ground game.” It means Lesnar was going in knowing he was better and that was going to win. He’s not saying he doesn’t respect their careers. He’s said otherwise numerous times. Gah just fight already.
by Matt on Jul 9, 2009 2:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Way to represent mixed martial arts, Brock.
Don’t know why you can’t respect people and beat them at the same time, like you know, every other champion of the sport.
Not respecting athletes in your sport just means when you lose that nobody is going to give a shit about you.
by DirtyML on Jul 9, 2009 2:21 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The UFC isn’t MMA…it’s Ultimate fighting, and along with being an ‘Ultimate Fighter’ you have to act like a WWE wrestler…otherwise you either get cut, or will never see any money.

by introvert on Jul 9, 2009 2:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I know, why can’t the UFC take a page from Strikeforce’s classy fighters like Nick Diaz, Frank Shamrock, Riggs and Baroni?
Trash-talking can get very annoying, but it’s a by-product of both marketing and giving aggressive athletes a chance to speak. It is prevalent in all of MMA, not just the UFC (less so in Japan for cultural reasons). The reason we hear so much of it nowadays is because there are so many media outlets now – the internet has revolutionized being an asshole!

You can take the man out of the WWE, but you can’t take the WWE out of the man.
Personally, I think the occasional Lesnar-type meathead is healthy for the UFC. I strongly dislike him…But this type of guy is prevalent throughout sports (Sean Avery, Chris Chelios, Manny Ramirez, Bill Romanaski) and it’s useful to have them around.
by TonyJM on Jul 9, 2009 3:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
put it this way, hes is not a fan lover boy of mma stars like you jokes are.
What he is saying he walks in the damm cage and believes 100% he is by far the better fighter no matter who it is on the other side.
He is not saying they are all fags and losers.
He believes if you are all sititng thinking how great they are and wonderful things they have done your already beat mentally.
There is a differance between respect and being dis respctful.
It is obvious most of you have never competed at a high level in any sport that took training and extra effort other then just natural ability.

Give it a break, he is talking about giving them respect in the Octagon so just relax. Playing years of football and up to the D2 collegiate level and you do end up on your ass quickly if you walk onto the field going, “wow, I really respect this guy” off the field is a different story and same goes for Brock, he has been nothing but respectful outside the cage.
by Edgecrusher71 on Jul 9, 2009 9:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t get it. Before Brock beat Randy, Randy was the best Heavyweight fighter in the ufc, at least everyone said. Now that Brock beat him people still dismiss him. If he was so bad at MMA like a lot of the maniacs here say, he wouldn’t be champion, regardless of his attitude. Give respect where it’s due.
by elltwilightiott on Jul 9, 2009 11:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The first sentence of your post speaks volumes.
Randy was old as hell and Brock got a title shot with a 1-1 UFC record. Yes, he’s a physically gifted fighter who will be a handful for anybody. The criticism stems more from his disrespect for the sport and its athletes than his shortcomings in the cage.
by Jeremyjackson on Jul 10, 2009 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
for some reason, brock’s smack talk never really gets to me. maybe b/c he was a pro-wrestler, maybe b/c he backs up his talk, or maybe b/c you can pretty much tell he’s just been a dbag his whole life. it’s almost cartoon-like to the point where it’s funny. i’ll take brock’s outrageous/slightly funny smack talk over frank murr’s ego any day.

What an idiot its just the opposite!!! when you respect your opponent then your respected by the people by the fighters by everybody and that’s makes you stronger cause you have a reason to fight … and when you don’t you got no reason to come to the octagon and fight (unless your crazy)cause everybody hates you, your a douche bag with no respect
that’s why he will never get respected in the mma world … the man is big but with a small brain don’t get me wrong i don’t say his not going to win but his just weird
