Ryan Bader vs Eric Schafer fight set for UFC 104 on Oct. 24

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 light heavyweight winner Ryan Bader (9-0) announced today via Twitter.com that he will return to action against ground specialist Eric Schafer (11-3-2) at UFC 104, which is scheduled for the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 24.

It will mark the first fight for "Darth" Bader — who is an accomplished collegiate wrestler from Arizona State University (ASU) — since he injured the MCL and PCL in his knee during a unanimous decision win over Carmelo Marrero at UFC Fight Night 18 back in April.

"Red" — who is now quietly enjoying a four-fight win streak — blasted Antonio Mendes en route to a first round technical knockout win in his most recent appearance at UFC UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson" earlier this year. He now has three wins in five UFC fights under his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, which he will more than likely look to leverage against the Arizona Combat Sports product on fight night.

UFC 104 currently features a light heavyweight title fight between newly-minted champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida in his first title defense against 2005 Pride FC Middleweight Grand Prix winner Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. In addition, top heavyweight prospects Cain Velaquez and Shane Carwin are expected to hook up their ham hocks in a potential number one contender eliminator match in the co main event.

big red will submit the blanket hopefully

by JG on Jul 8, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

i doubt that he didnt get submitted by vinny or eliot

vinny didnt get him on the ground and neither will shafer

by ufcaddict on Jul 8, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Why is he a blanket already? Because he didn’t finish Caramel Marrero? A guy who half the people on here thought would beat Bader? Bader was going for all kinds of submissions that whole fight. Blanket? I dont think so.

I think Bader will keep it standing and TKO Red.

by Alpha Male 360 on Jul 8, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Whenever man. The PS message I sent you my cell number to text me, since we’re never on the same time. But ya! Best of 5! One match in each weight class.

by Syn on Jul 8, 2009 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I responded earlier but I guess its in moderation. The PS message I sent you had my cell number in it. You could text me whenever since we are never on at the same time. Best out of 5. One fight per weight class.

Alright!

This is a dangerous match up for Bader. Ravishing Red has some real nice Jits in his arsenal.

I doubt Bader will want to go to the ground with Shaefer. Believe it or not, I actually like Shaefer (im a big fan of jits). My guess is that Bader will use his wrestling to keep the fight standing!

by JOhn G on Jul 9, 2009 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Schafer shouldt be too many wins away from a title shot. If he wins this and maybe two others, depending on how quickly or dominating those wins are.

by c-war on Jul 9, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Best scenario for Bader would be to keep it standing and hurt Red with some body shots or kicks. His TD defense should be good enough to keep Red off of him.

Red can take a pounding (versus Houston)and still take this to the ground for a sub win.

The question is whether Bader can keep from going against his instinct and take Red to the ground.

Magic 8 ball says…No.

Red FTW.

Bader looks like a happy drunk in that pic

Ryan Bader has this one hands down. Hits harder, wrestling background, extremely aggressive. Bad matchup for Eric the redhead his face will be red after this fight put cash on this one sided fight.

by Cory on Jul 8, 2009 6:23 PM EDT reply actions

That’s just the way AZ Combat Sports, aka Team Humpdown rolls.

by PW on Jul 9, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Schafer via sub.

by Dayzah on Jul 8, 2009 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

Bader via TKO. Money.

by BulletproofTiger on Jul 8, 2009 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

This is actually the quickest we’ve seen a TUF winner take on an actual fighter. They usually get fed a couple cans.

by Bobby on Jul 8, 2009 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

what about serra fighing st pierre?

by rusted-face99 on Jul 9, 2009 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions

The year that Lutter/Serra won they were quaranteed a title shot , hardly the same at all .. Its like comparing apples and dog shit ..

Not too mention that everyone one of them had fought in the UFC before , unlike most TUF noobs who have never been under the big lights like Serra already had…

Terrible comparison.

by Dayzah on Jul 9, 2009 7:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Ha ha, I think that was on my SAT verbal section. TUF 4:All other TUFs :: Apples:

A: Apples
B: Oranges
C: Dog shit
D: Tim Sylvia

by PW on Jul 9, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

D…final answer

by McArthur on Jul 9, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

aren’t c and d generally the same thing?

by plaidnerd on Jul 9, 2009 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

in the blue corner beavis, and in the red corner butthead.bad pics but great match-up.

by rusted-face99 on Jul 9, 2009 12:12 AM EDT reply actions

bader is boring. schafer by submission.

by lefthook187 on Jul 9, 2009 2:49 AM EDT reply actions

Red by sub round 1. Easy matchup for Red. Those picking Bader really have no clue how sick Red is on the ground.
