Dana White: The UFC was once lower than porn, will one day be higher than football

Props: Las Vegas Review Journal
Quoteworthy:
"When I say it's going to be the biggest sport in the world, people either think I'm being a promoter ... and trying to pump up my product or I'm a lunatic. When I break it down for you, it does make sense. The NFL has been spending billions of dollars trying to break into other countries, and it's not happening. You know why? Because nobody (cares) about football in other countries. The people in London or Canada or Mexico are never going to care about the New York Giants. It's like saying cricket is going to be big here someday. Soccer never really even made it big here, but it's huge around the rest of the world. At the time that we bought (the UFC), it wasn't allowed on pay per view. Porn is on pay per view, but UFC was not allowed on pay per view. I can take two guys and put them in an octagon, and they can use any martial art they want, it transcends all cultural barriers, all language barriers. We're all human beings, and fighting is in our DNA. We get it and we like it. It doesn't have to be explained to us."
– UFC President Dana White continues his quest for a global brand of combat sports. While surpassing the NFL is certainly a tall hurdle to clear, the former aerobics instructor and long time friend of the Fertitta brothers has taken the UFC to unbelievable heights in both financial gain and global appeal. Not bad for a potty-mouthed promoter with no college degree. Think of where the UFC was five years ago compared to where it is now. Anyone want to take a guess on where it will be in another five years?

Dana should have said he wants to make the UFC and MMA as popular as porn. Whooo
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jul 8, 2009 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
1. The “lower than porn” statement makes sense if you understand the context. Which was through the eyes of the cable execs. Porn could get on PPV but, because of the bad “human cockfighting” rap, the UFC could not. I don’t think Dana is saying that MMA or the UFC is bigger than the porn industry.
2. I was an early fan of the UFC 1-5, buy drifted away. I am one of the “TUF” fans that got a call during the Griffin/Bonnar fight. I have paid for nearly every ppv since, and my entire circle of family and friends (that used to make fun of me) are now into the UFC and MMA. We used to only get together for a big NFL or NBA game, now we do the same with the UFC. So, I understand Dana’s train of thought, but I don’t see MMA ever being as globally accepted as Soccer (not a soccer fan either). Maybe in ten years it will be the #2 sport on a global scale but it’s not there yet, (which is what Dana claims by the way, ten years, not right now)
3. One of the advantages a sport like soccer has, is that any kid can kick a ball, and in most 3rd world countries, they will use a roll of leaves taped together. It takes no money and you don’t need a grown up around to learn. Learning MMA takes supervision and money. Maybe in time, as gyms start popping up more kids can learn at an early age. Until then More kids on a global level will grow up learning to play and love soccer, and hence become die hard fans for life.
Again, I am not a soccer fan!! I can’t watch it for more than a minute or two before I doze off, but obviously there are tens of millions of people that love it. MMA just can’t compete with those numbers.
As for the other big American sports, Dana may not be far off with his ten year prediction.

by John G on Jul 8, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
there are not just tens of millions that are fans of soccer, it’s the biggest sport when it comes to practitioners in America, and it’s a couple of billions that are fans of football (soccer)!..
there were a couple of games this season and each season that has 1 billion viewers! Imagine that, 1 billion viewers for one game, and it’s games going on in all kinds of divisions all over the world…

If the UFC builds a fan base in china then I could buy that given their crazy population. I guess the way I look at it is will the biggest UFC event ever get more views then the superbowl? I feel like that determines it because that is what makes football the biggest sport in america.

He does make a good point, and I believe wether Dana was there or not, it was only a matter of time before the UFC exploded, as he put it, it’s in our DNA, because of the gladotorial nature of the sport there would always be an audience, Dana was in the right place at right time with a couple of multi millionaires and their contacts behind him. The UFC name was mud to some for quite a while but the majority who watched it could never get enough of it. His backers and fighters like Tito (even though I am not a fan), Hughes, Chuck and Randy to name but few that helped make the UFC what it is today, the fans watch it for the fighers, they are a major factor in it’s growth and popularity, he makes out that everything has happned because of him, he needs to credit the fighters a little more than he does.

What are you basing this on?….Dana’s comments?
Besides, anyone can say their sport is more popular in Kazakhstan or Bulgaria…what difference does it make?
Dana is claiming that the UFC will be more popular worldwide? Even if he could prove it was, what difference would it make if 1000 people are watching the UFC in some third world country, as compared to 999 watching American football on satellite…when 20 million of them are watching cricket or horse polo, or some shit like that?
The UFC is polular, but it isn’t going to run over traditional sports…hell, big boximg matches are still beating the UFC’s ratings.

No you’re the complete opposite, a UFC/Dana hater who’s opinion in regards to the company or the president of the company should be completely ignored as it is always biased and one sided as you could possibly get. Dana backed up his argument with about as many facts as you used to back up your ridiculous post.

No only a fool would argue that the America’s are bigger than Englang, Russia, Germany, Japan, China, etc. Having a fan base in all of these countries as opposed to just the US and some of Canada means that you are more popular. The fact that the other sports makes more money or is more popular in specific countries doesn’t mean squat. Its the popularity of the sport and the want of it in every country as opposed to one. Now I’m not saying that it yet has a huge following in all of these countries but the option is there to expand. MMA is bigger than Americanized football overseas, please provide me the stats and source to disprove this claim.

If you don’t believe that, you’re just an ignorant hater. I went on tour with a band from Scotland around the US and we were touring during the NFL playoffs. My band all wanted to watch and the guys from Scotland didn’t even know how to play the game. Meanwhile every morning they were outside playing soccer.
NFL is popular in North America and that’s it. MMA is already more popular in Brazil and Japan. To say that MMA is more popular than the NFL worldwide is not a stretch at all, and it’s not even a big statement. A big statement would be to say that MMA is bigger than SOCCER worldwide, which it is not at this time.

by UKmmaBOY on Jul 8, 2009 10:24 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Um….no.
UFC will never be bigger than football or futbol.
Futbol and football have a loooong history that MMA does not have. All it would take to de-rail the UFC is one horrific injury, or God forbid death, on live television…that would spell disaster. Even though these things happen in other sports, the other sports have history on their side…the UFC does not.
Hell, I’ll bet that there is more money made in merchandising by any one American football team throughout the course of a year than the UFC makes on theirs….then multiply that by 32(?) teams…not even close.
Hate to rain on Dana’s parade, but…. no network television deals = no competing with these sports. And network television doesn’t seem to be banging down Dana’s door. With Dana in charge and spewing his mouth off all the time, they will never get to this level…kind of ironic that he’s the one claiming they will, but he’s the one holding it back…the guy needs a reality check. Dana White = Bush League.
I’d bet network television execs would rather drink Tank Abbott’s dirty bath water than risk dealing with Dana.
by introvert on Jul 8, 2009 10:25 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
fail. your post just doesn’t make any sense from top to bottom. in one breath you say a death on live television would spell disaster and then say they also fail because they have no network television deals (?).
you’ve got a tough point to prove when you try and say that dana is holding it back. that’s just a ridiculous point. that’s like saying bill gates is holding microsoft back. there would be no microsoft and consequently perhaps the idea of the home computer without bill gates.

So, you think Network tv would not boost UFC’s polularity to the “next level?”
Hell, CBS went into business with Elite XC and Gary Shaw, but still no deal with the UFC for network TV. If Gary Shaw is such a slimeball, and network TV dealt with him, what does that say about your hero?
But, one would imagine you’ll say that network tv exects are idiots, and Dana is God.
by introvert on Jul 8, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Will you just go to sherdog or something? Your posts are so wrong its not even funny. No I’m not arguing that a network deal won’t boost ratings. However to answer your question on why Elite XC got a deal and not the UFC… because EXC and Shaw were willing to sell their souls. Dana was not willing to make many changes or allow control to be given to CBS of his show. Also the fact that the UFC has a deal with SPIKE would cause some issues between sponsors and fight coverage. But you know you have some good points. Like if EXC were to get a deal on cable television like the UFC how would they compete with the UFC, WEC, and the Versus channel? Or how would EXC make money on PPVs? Seriously man did Dana White screw your sister or something? your bias is so strong it leads you to say some of the dumbest things possible.

Dana giving in to CBS or NBC or whomever, means Dana loses control of the production. They could have anyone they wanted to announce, do interviews, etc etc. We really want to see the announcers of Strikeforce doing UFC? Advertisements playing at the bottom of the screen when fighters walk towards the ring? No thanks.
by Big D on Jul 8, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dana losing control of the production is what needs to happen, you can’t have the president of the company that makes every decision have control of production!.. He can brainwash you all day, every show and that is what he does! the commentators should noway in hell be hired by the UFC cause they can tell them what to say, which they do!
by RoB on Jul 8, 2009 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
people on here are acting like Dana, Lorenzo and the guys wouldn’t own the UFC anymore if they got on CBS or something.. the only reason why Elite XC went under is because they had guys that didn’t know what they were doing , and they didn’t have enough talent in their company!.. the UFC would bring all of the fans and get even more fans, and we would get to hear unbiased opinions from the commentators who wouldn’t be scared to get fired by Dana!..
by RoB on Jul 8, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
and how did the network t.v. deal work for exc? intovert, the UFC is doing just fine without network t.v. your thinking is blatantly out of touch with today’s audience and today’s reality. quick question; how much time did you spend watching network television today compared to time spent on the internet?
and who said he was my hero? why is it that people who disagree with you are automatic dana-lovers? you’ve got issues man. all i am saying is that trying to prove that dana can’t take the UFC to the “next level” is ridiculous. since when do you disregard a guy’s track record in determining whether or not he is fit to continue in his role?
by JB on Jul 9, 2009 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How does that not change things? Its not like the commentators have to worry about making Dana mad. What else should they be saying that they aren’t? Anyway I completely disagree, its not Dana who sets up the way the UFC programs run. If you compare an Elite XC event to a UFC one the flow is so much different. the Feel the atmosphere everything is so much better when you look at the UFC. Why? because CBS wants to be able to control things. look at how Gina’s fight ended early cause she was destroying her opponents face. CBS could not have failed any worse.
