Stephan Bonnar not looking to get hammered on July 11

Props: Winnipeg Free Press

Quoteworthy:

"I just need a win, and a win over a big name. We'll take it from there. I'm not going to be like demanding a title fight or anything. Just climb up that ladder, that's all I see it as. I know I always have that feeling, something to prove, but I especially have it now. There's a lot I want to show . . . I want to fight, just leave everything in there and show everyone what I'm made of. Just another fight, just me and Coleman in a cage. That's kind of how I prefer to look at things."

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) sensation from season one, Stephan Bonnar, talks about proving he still belongs among the ranks of the light heavyweights when he clashes with Mark Coleman at UFC 100 on July 11. "The American Psycho" has lost three of his last five fights; however, he was looking sharp after stringing back-to-back wins before locking horns with super prospect Jon Jones earlier this year. Can he get back on the winning track less than two weeks from now or will Coleman drop "The Hammer" with his trademark takedowns/ground and pound en route to a victory of his own?

Huge Bonnar fan, I think he has this one locked, I’ll be trusting him with my betting cash. I won’t forget he helped put the UFC where it is, and actually I had scored that fight for him at the finale when I watched it live. Jones was impressive, but also Bonnar was coming off a huge layoff and injury, so let’s see how his climb up plays out if he stays healthy.

Coleman UD. He’s gonna LNP him hard. Bonnar isn’t super dynamic on the ground and can only catch people if they play the scrambling game with him. I don’t see him throwin up triangles and armbars like fedor or Big Nog. There won’t be any standup coz well he’s fighting the hammer.

That’s a good point as evidenced in the Rashad fight, but I think that is because Bonnar’s game plan was to just get up and strike and not use his excellent BJJ. I think this time Bonnar will have a better gameplan.

man i am on the fence on this, i know a lot of people think bonnar but i think its going to be a lot closer than most think

i think coleman will be in better shape for this fight since he can afford a good camp this time around but still that is not enough to win

i will be up for bonnar but i might put cash on the under dog

I dont know. if the bonnar that fought jon JOnes shjows up, coleman could win…however I will chalk that up to cage rust and the long layoff.

I have a hard time these days picking Coleman to beat anyone!

NNR’s got good points though!I too believe this gonna be the upset @ 100!

Dunno bro i didn’t think that Bonner looked that bad in that fight, i thought it was just Jones is off the hook.

Speaking of which they really should have found a place for him on the main card, Jones is the future!

Bonner has always had good cardio and that is what is going to make him win this fight, easily at that IMO.

by Nick J on Jul 8, 2009 7:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Bonnar looked pretty damn bad against Jones, and had no idea of what he was doing… his problem is that he doesn’t use his brain when he fights! he needs to be more disciplined cause he’s gonna get taken down if he clinches up with Mark in this one..

by RoB on Jul 8, 2009 8:05 AM EDT up reply actions

he’ll get taken down and end up winning via RNC in the 1st rnd…Coleman will be devestated as his kids jump into the octagon crying

No disrespect to Mr. Coleman, I respect his accomplishments, but getting a victory over him, as he is now, isn’t really anything worth catapulting Bonnar up the ladder. The best thing about it is that it’ll boost his ego after the Bones loss.

by Kobajack on Jul 8, 2009 4:07 AM EDT up reply actions

bonnar has won already..

-325 in the odds is a gift.

by shamo84 on Jul 8, 2009 6:18 AM EDT up reply actions

at those odds, I love coleman!!! Lets hope we have a great mma talk filled day guys! I’m still flabbergasted over yesterday! it was fun…but interesting!

by kevin on Jul 8, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

hey alpha, I read ur response to me asking to come to 101…I’d be lying if I said you didn’t lose me! I’m now more curious than ever!

by kevin on Jul 8, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Where did I lose you(which part)?

by Alpha Male 360 on Jul 8, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

IDK bro, I think I get it, but have so many questions. for an email or another day (not on mania) but you said you don’t email so…I’ll just wonder!

by kevin on Jul 8, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Coleman is in his twilight. Bonner should be able to handle him. He’ll shake off the ring rust he showed in his last fight.

by split decision on Jul 7, 2009 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed but there’s no glory in winning over Coleman. A win is win but I don’t see this win really helping him much.

by DSmith on Jul 7, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

coleman has looked bad in his last fight, but to beat a hall of famer and a hero his wud b a nice feather in his cap, i want both to win but i like bonnar more so yea he shud take it in the 3rd after coleman gets tired from taking him down..

by guyverbob on Jul 7, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Why take him down?

I’d stay on the outside, circling like mad and throwing 2-3 combos (and overhands now and then), then get out of his face if needed, Bonnar must stay standing up and rely on his striking ability + his footwork and speed in this one, if Bonnar take this to the ground and ends up at the bottom, it’s game over for him and a loss versus the today-Coleman ain’t good.

by JonnyBoy on Jul 8, 2009 3:55 AM EDT up reply actions

guvernorbob meant that Coleman would get tired from taking Bonnar down… Bonnar’s problem is that he’s too stupid! he clinched up with Jon Jones all the time, i didn’t know what he was doing and he didn’t try too hard to get out of the clinch either, he did that all fight long!

by RoB on Jul 8, 2009 5:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree. A win does absolutely nothing for him. A loss could be worse than Mercer to Sylvia.

It is said that theUFC had to resort to giving Bonnar an old man who gasses after 3 minutes to ensure their star doesnt lose again

by fightfan on Jul 8, 2009 2:17 AM EDT up reply actions

theres always glory in winning!! Especially since hes not had the best of form, and like it or not shogun struggled to finish coleman, all be it an out of shape shogun!! No easy fights in the ufc!!

Love Bonnar, but also love Coleman too. If you were not watching the UFC when Coleman was fighting, then your a TUF Nuthugger who should jump on another bandwagon. I on the other hand am way cool.

by mike on Jul 7, 2009 11:21 PM EDT reply actions

Sadly this foolios skills didnt get a ton better after TuF he should beat Coleman but he will never even be considered close a contendor.

by Khaos_Warrior on Jul 7, 2009 11:43 PM EDT reply actions

Bonnar doesn’t fair well with wrestlers period. Coleman’s conditioning or lack of it will not come into play because he will be laying on Bonnar for 75% of the fight at least. If you actually bet money on Bonnar I hate to say it but I am 100% with NNR on this one. Bad fight for Bonnar. Unless his TD defense has improved greatly were in for a boring fight with a decision to Coleman.

by halljam2 on Jul 8, 2009 12:53 AM EDT reply actions

Good post. This fight will absolutely come down to whether Bonnar can stay off his back. I’ve always liked Bonnar’s skills, but his weakness has always been takedown defense and that he’s not very quick. Bad combo to have vs Coleman, but I’m hoping Bonnar can keep the fight in his realm and get the W. Just my two cents, but betting-wise, I wouldn’t touch this fight.

by CL on Jul 8, 2009 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I hate Stephan bonnars face :D i get angry everytime i see him.. don’t know why.

by joey on Jul 8, 2009 4:17 AM EDT reply actions

I’m a Bonnar fan he always comes to fight and is never in a bad fight…It’s scary how winded Coleman was after the 1 st round of the Shogun fight, Bonnar never gets tired, which will play a huge role in this fight.

by Robert(1) on Jul 8, 2009 7:37 AM EDT reply actions

I for one, will be getting hammered

by McArthur on Jul 8, 2009 7:57 AM EDT reply actions

As will I…………….:-)

by Dragon on Jul 8, 2009 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions

If Bonnar can get out of the first round, he’ll be golden. He has to be very aware of Coleman coming out with a big takedown and his signature ground and pound.
