Nate Diaz vs Melvin Guillard announced for UFC Fight Night 19 on Sept. 16

The Ultimate Fighter 5 winner Nate Diaz (10-4) will get a chance to break out of an 0-2 slump when he tangles with Melvin Guillard (22-7-2) in a lightweight match up at UFC Fight Night 19 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Sept. 16, 2009.
Diaz is coming off a disappointing unanimous decision loss to Joe Stevenson at TUF 9 Finale on June 20. It was his second straight loss inside the Octagon after winning five straight and further diminished his chances at a division title shot, which could have possibly been within reach with a few more impressive wins.
The good news is that the fighter out of Stockton, Calif., is just 23 years old. In the grand scheme of things the loss to "Daddy" seems like a minor speed bump; however, it appears to be tough to swallow nonetheless. He and Stevenson each earned $25,000 bonuses for putting on one of three "Fights of the Night."
"The Young Assassin" has also had his share of troubles inside of the Octagon (and out) but lately has managed to get his life and career back on track.
The talented 26-year-old Louisiana native appeared to have slayed his personal demons, destroying Denis Siver at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" in July 2008 — his return fight after being released by the
UFC for, among other things, his relationship with illegal drugs.
He followed that up with critical win against Brazilian jiu-jitsu wizard Gleison Tibau at the TUF 9 Finale less than a month ago.
A big win over a name like Diaz and Guillard is right back in the thick of things.
UFC Fight Night 19 is expected to feature a lightweight rumble between Roger Huerta and Gray Maynard. It will serve as the lead-in for the upcoming tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), which features Kimbo Slice and a solid collection of 15 other heavyweight fighters competing in a tournament-style format to earn one "six-figure contract."

very cool…for once I will be cheering for a Diaz!!!

Agreed. I think Diaz will take this to the ground ASAP and finish it. He shouldn’t try to stand with Guillard. I also think Maynard is going to be Huerta’s exit party. Or make that Dana’s party.
Huerta’s good but Maynard is HUGE and shoould overpower him. I Maynard in Toronto a while back and couldn’t believe he was able to make 155. He’s a beast.

I’ll be rooting for Diaz and Huerta (even though I think Maynard has almost every advantage in this fight). I have to root and stick up for my fighters.

Let me start off by saying that as a purist and hardcore fan, this fight SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. im not a fan of Melvin’s but I do enjoy watching him fight, and I love Diaz.
This will be a very exciting fight and the pre fight hype will be entertaining but I dont think Melvin is main event worthy. He is coming off a bunch of losses and a gift from another BS decision win over Tibau (one of the worst decision recently). I know Diaz is on a losing streak, but he is ultra popular and you can count on him to bring it as a main event fighter. Only time Melvin was ever in ahapp main event, he came to fight on cocaine and was submtted by Joe daddy in about 12 seconds. I thin he is mentally weak, and the pressure from being in a main event will not allow him to perform to the best of his abilities, but all in all, combine these 2 hot heads and you will get an enteratining fight so whatever….

It was an interesting choice. I hope Melvin can keep it together. He hasn’t been sober for that long. It seems like it’s supposed to be a showcase/main event for Diaz at the expense of Guillard. The UFC has no other reason to do it. Exciting yes or a really really quick night or Melvin (again).

its no secret that Dana wants Maynard to play the spoiler role against HUerta the way Machida did to Tito. Its been a while since HUerta fought, and I am a firm believer that long lay offs really have an impact in fights and Maynard is to good of a wrestler for Huerta to be able to keep the fight standing.
Huerta not only has to fight Maynard, but he will be battling a long lay off…so I gotta go with Maynard via a dominant, one sided, ground n pound, decision win over Huerta who will pack his bags and get big money over at affliction.
Im calling it right now! 2010 Fight of the Year Candidate:
Affliction 4: Roger Huerta vs. Takanori Gomi!
WOW! THat match up will be DYNAMIC. remember, your boy John G called it when it happens! lol

John G,
Nate “The most overhyped lackluster fighter in the UFC” Diaz is coming off back to back losses!
I’ve always found Melvin exciting and reminds of a young/little Kevin Randelman.
Melvin seems to have matured and is gett’n his shit together!
Nate is NOT a main event fighter, imo! HE DEFINATELY IS NO NICK!
Hopefully with this loss, and another one to follow, maybe against GRIFFIN, nate will be out of the UFC!

Its too bad Huerta is leaving the ufc for modeling and Acting. There’re not enough Mexican fighters and we’re are losing one of the best at light weight. Its a good thing Sanches drop to Lw, and we still got Velasquez and I think Torres is from mexican decendant. I think Florian is from Chile so he has Latin America roots. I hope its a Hispanic sweep on fight night. War Huerta and Diaz

not a bad card actually…for free that is…
Nate Diaz vs. Melvin Guillard
Roger Huerta vs. Gray Maynard
Dan Miller vs. Aaron Simpson
Tim Credeur vs. Nate Quarry
Ronnys Torres vs. Jeremy Stephens
Mike Pyle vs. Chris Wilson
Kyle Bradley vs. Sam Stout
by McArthur on Jul 7, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Huerta learned anything from his fight with Florian, it’s how, you know, to be professionally good looking. And it’s actor/model, and not the other way around.

these fight night cards are becoming more and more stacked
diaz/guillard should be very entertaining
i’m not sure how guillard won the fight with tibau! tibau had him in mount multiple times in round 3 or 2 not sure and tibau definitely won round 1
however i like watching guillard and i believe he showed good sub defence against tibau i think he needs to work on stopping transitions
huerta/maynard will probably be entertaining but i think maynard will hold him for two rounds and then in the third huerta will go out guns blazing like guida/huerta but maynard will not get subbed and probably win
huerta and maynard are two of my fav fighters but i liked huerta a lot before he disappeared and it seems he is not going to be fighting for a while after this fight so i’m going to root for maynard
by ufcaddict on Jul 7, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nate can’t wrestle and young guillard is too explosive. This is gonna be a standup match but unlike Nick, nate hasn’t found the intricacies of that diaz boxing yet to make it as effective. I think Melvin might put him away. Also guillard lost the fight to Tibau 30-27, anyone who gave him a round needs to relearn how to judge fights. At worst 30-29 if you give 10-10s for the first two since both did nothing.
by NameNotRequired on Jul 8, 2009 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
THank you NNR! In a world where we have been seeing 1 bad judges decision after another…..imo, THE gUILLARD/tIBAU FIGHT WAS THE WORST JUDGING YET!
i GUARENTEED tIBAU TO WIN THAT FIGHT and I had a lot of money riding on it, and the judges totally FOCKED me! NNR, IMO, Tibau won every single round! I cant even see an argument for giving a round to Melvin.
Nate might not be able to box with Melvin, and he might not be able to take Melvin down….however Diaz has such an advantage on the ground, that all he really needs to do is pull guard and the fights OVER! We wont see Nate wrestling Melvin to the ground, but we very well could see Nate take Melvin for a ride via one of his awesome Judo throws!
Huerta will continue to fight. He wanted a new deal with the UFC, but he felt the dollars werent right. For him to be back fighting means he is done with his little movie..I just think he over values himself. He might not be worth what he is asking for to the UFC…but Im sure affliction and strikeforce can use a popular, young marketable fighter like Huerta!
I wouldnt mind seeing Huerta and the Polish Hammer slugging it out!
Huerta vs. Din tHomas would be cool too!

Roger is worth every single cent, they weren’t even paying him good!.. Huerta is the most popular fighter on that card with the biggest star qualities! him and Diego Sanchez are the two guys in the LW division with the most star qualities and they both could become huge even though Diego is on his way, since he is winning the LW title!.. BJ is too lazy and he’s not a good enough athlete, he just looks pretty tired to me..

Tibau did not win round 1.. I can not understand how u could possibly give that to Tibau, all he did was do no damage or no nothing, wrestling is not fighting, and Guillard got right back up everytime and landed way cleaner and better shots through the whole 1st round!..

hey closer, this is something I posted yesterday. It’s heartfelt bro. I’m off to take a nap guys, sick and tired of useless bashing. peace!
.
Off topic to Alpha male and any one else I offended (canadian). I apologize. After reading alpha’s rant, I had to ask my wife if she wrote it. It was word for word one of her usual lectures about me being a sociopath and arrogant. It really isn’t my intention, it’s just me. Sorry I bring up obscure things like a 12k run at poker (in 6 weeks) or my job. I’m just being me and being honest! I would never bash anyone for doing the same or brag to make someone feel like a douche! If you got a good new job, I’d congratulate you (like I did with Chefdaddy), if you graduated college I’d do the same (like John). I could get my mma news from any of a dozen or more sights, I come here for my peeps in the comment section! We make mania what it is! My intentions are not to hurt anyones feelings or come off too much like a dick! I have talked to or texted many guys off the site and obviously have put together a trip to 101 for almost 20 maniacs so we can chill for a weekend and watch mma with guys we chat with every day! You are all (most of you) very knowledgeable, and I enjoy chatting with you immensely! I won’t change who I am, but know I truly am not trying to offend anyone and am sorry if I did. Sorry also that this is John like in length!

one more thing closer, if it were an mma related opinion, of course I’d respect it, the bitchy wife comment not so much! I was fine growing up, played 3 sports in high school, went to college etc. pretty normal everyday guy. yes I took it too far with my comment and meant the apology. you are the one who started a comment section with a comment about me. I let it go as of yesterday. I live my life day to day, what happened yesterday is forgotten today, you rehashed it bro. No hard feelings, truth is, tomorrow is another day and I won’t think twice about today! If you make a comment I agree with, I’ll be the first to say I agree, I don’t hold grudges. actually am just a pretty laid back guy most of the time!

by McArthur on Jul 7, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
To be fair to Nover, the stoppage was shocking. Sure he was overhyped and has to work a lot on his wrestling to have a hope in the UFC, but he still has a lot of potenital.
As for this fight, Diaz should smash Melvin. Nate was let down by the judges against Clay but was outclassed by Joe Daddy, hopefully he will have worked on his striking with Nick and is not too stubborn to take this to the ground, Melvin has no ground game and if the Tibau decision was as bad as I’ve heard it was, he has no place in the main event. Nate’s going to choke out Melvin, hopefully he’ll have a celebration to top Clementi’s.

Diaz will weather the storm and finish towards the end of the first round. The MMA weatherman calls for 33% chance of a Triangle Choke, 33% RNC 33% Armbar. 1% Chance of Guillard TKO.
I would love… L O V E to see Diaz with a one finger solute while he squeezes the bleach out of Mel’s hair. If Guillard can’t beat Clementi there isn’t much shot at beating a Diaz if it hits the mat.
Maynard should grind out the decision, but I believe Roger will make him earn it and it will be a great bout.

I think they are throwing nate a easy win to get him back in the standings. As much as I hate nate, he has good jitz and steals wins. Melvin is notorious for sticking his neck out.

Let’s see how good Nate’s chin really is. Hope Melvin can catch him flush.
Yeah, Melvin’s last match against Tibau was definitely a BS decision. He should have lost.

I swear half the people in here are retarded. Melvin vs diaz. We all know that melvin has been loosing off of submissions and on the ground….right? so what the hell do you think he has been working on? hmmm tough question, i would have to say his ground defense. Melvin is gonna knock diaz off his feet. Melvin is way to strong for diaz, way to explosive and way to aggressive. Cocaine will win this fight over the stoner
