I for one find it a bit weird BJ talking tough in just a towel.

by UK_Chris on Jul 3, 2009 5:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think it’s a towel. But its bj penn he would still be tough wearing a pink bikini.

by amm on Jul 3, 2009 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ah yeah, maybe some white shorts. Although I still find the lil clip slightly weird. Cant quite put my finger on it…

by UK_Chris on Jul 3, 2009 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BJ Penn needs and anti-itch cream because you can’t look tough when you’re scratching your butt.

wow bj really makes it really hard to like him, cant wait till florian takes the title off that spoiled crybaby

what did he do wrong this time?

maybe it’s time to give him a break, huh?

by ja434650 on Jul 3, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, maybe it’s time to move on with this crybaby grease thing.. that’s a half a year ago, and YOU are still dwelling on it. damn, BJ must be happy that someone(YOU-brendan) is still thinking about him. haha.
i totally agree with you, ja34650. time to move on..
gotta admit, he does look in great shape.. we’ll see what happens on aug.8! WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where was Kill-Flo talking trash? That just sounds totally out of character for him.

by PW on Jul 3, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who does BJ train with that gives him a run for his money? When u hear of all the other top fighters training they all got top named fighters as training partners. Win or Lose Florian is going to give BJ a tough time.

by DAVE A on Jul 3, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BJ doesn’t need to train with anyone, I would love for him to knock Kenny “the gay” Florian out!
but as i’ve said i think Florian is going to win…

by RoB on Jul 3, 2009 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is BJ on something? Seriously. I’m not trying to be funny. All the scratching and weird mannerisms… anyone know someone on drugs who acts like this?

I can’t wait for this fight. I’m more excited for this than the GSP fight. I knew how that fight was going to go before it started. But I can honestly say that I’m not sure how this one will go at all. It’s dumb to count either guy out. I put a little on Kenny just for fun and b/c he’s the underdog, but I have no idea what will happen.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 3, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know people that move around alot when speaking and drugs are not involved at all but I will say Kenny annoys me more than BJ does. I mean Kenny comes off as a “know it all preppy little point dexter”. While BJ just seems like a cool guy to me. Lets not forgot, grease had nothing to do with BJ losing, but the fact is GSP or his corner stll infact cheated….why wouldn’t anybody want to protest the outcome?

…Wha?

This is the lamest attempt of “trashtalking” I have ever seen. I know you have to hype the fight but, geeze, that’s just weird man.

Not to mention, Kenny (IMO) has been tripping over himself to recognize BJ as one of the best p4p guys in the world, so I know this is BJ trying to get himself and his fans hyped.

I don’t see why you can’t approach each fight differently. If it’s not a blood fued, so be it. I would rather see a sincere fued or sincere respect, this is not the WWE. The false hype does nothing for me.

Didn’t Kenny say “it’s time to kill the master” infront of millions

by Robert(1) on Jul 4, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Robert(1),
Yeah, but after he kised his *ss and made all over him being “The Master”.

My point is, I’m not buying the bad blood thing between these two, plain and simple. I get it, you gottta find some reason to hate the guy but, you and I both know (regardless who wins) they will be raising each others hand, saying “their opponent was much tougher than they imagined” and, “he’s a legend”, “he’s one of the best” I’ve faced", blah, blah, blah.

Some guys really hate their opponent (davis/Hardy or Shamrock/Ortiz to nam a couple) but, if this is BJ’s idea of throwing down the “smack talk” it’s pretty dull.

alright Mania, I get it! YOu are about to create a thread with the news I posted. Well I spent over ten minutes researching and writing that post, and you actually posted it, only to remove it minutes later. when you eventually create the thread, EVERYONE is still going to respond to yOUR thread regardless if they responded to me in the other thread where i posted the same thing. This post isnt meant to attack you, YOU are the MAN, and I have nothing but love and respect for this site and the work that you and your staff do. When I post news like that, my only objective is to have more mma things to talk about on a given day, and for mma addicts like myself to get as much news as possible because I know thats what I would want. I am thrilled when you create a thread about news I posted on the same day, because more people respond to it, when you make a thread about it as opposed to when i post it. Its just a little frustrating when I spend time researching and posting mma news, post it, and it never appears!

Haha, it’s happened to me before too, John. Your post will probably pop up here once Mania posts a new thread about it.

im a bj penn and i thought ken flos chance at winning was due to cardio but im impressed with bjs physique this early going into the fight. bj is the most skilled fighter on the planet (flame on) the only problem hes had was cardio. to see him this ripped this early i cant see anything else other than a total destruction of kenflo.

by Jared on Jul 3, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes BJ looks to be in great shape. His chest look ripped. But i think Kenny is going to come in with a good game plan and his jits is going to suprise BJ alot and so will his standup. I say Kenny via Decision.

by kelpheadtwo on Jul 5, 2009 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BJ looks to be in great shape. I really like the quite approach that BJ is taking in this fight. Kenny has been running his mouth like crazy, and BJ is just sitting back, with a calm and diabolical composure. I think BJ is a very PROUD fighter who was embarrassed in his last fight…to me that is the scariest version of bJ Penn possible, and its just a bad time for Kenny to be facing BJ!

by JOhn G on Jul 3, 2009 5:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

People act like BJ Penn cant bounce back from being dominated. Its no secret that BJ is one of my favorites and that I HATE Matt HUGHES with a passion…but I do recall Hughes ending the 2nd fight in a dominating fashion and BJ bounced back, went on a dominant TEAR, and IMO, more then proved that he is virtually unstoppable when facing opponents that weigh 155 lbs!

Im also really sick of people having nothing bad to bash bJ Penn about other then his personality and cardio problems. 1st of all, that Cardio crap is WORTHLESS! BJ hasnt come into a fight in anything less then stellar shape, in over 2 YEARS NOW! Saying Kenny will win via Cardio is like saying that Rampage will get submitted because Sakuraba submitted him almost a decade ago. THat argument OLDS NO WEIGHT THESE DAYS!!!! Get over it…and find something credible in this day and age to Bash BJ Penn about!

Everyone has abandoned the BJ Penn bandwagon because he lost to the best fighter in a division that is proven that BJ has no business fighting in..now everyone is picking Kenny to beat him.

when People make their arguments about why Kenny will win, all I hear is BJ used to have cardio problems ages ago, and that they cant stand his personality. WEll this is a fight, and what comes out of your mouth really doesnt have anything to do with the actual FIGHT. Kenny is a top 5 fighter, so I have no problem with someone picking Kenny to overthrow the greatest lW to ever step in the Octagon, that happens to still be in his fighting Prime.. But I have yet to hear a single good analysis as to how people expect Kenny to win this fight considering the fact that BJ has the advantage in every single aspect of the sport!

by JOhn G on Jul 3, 2009 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kenny has better striking. BJ has a good jab and is a better boxer but Kenny has better kicks and knees. One knee can change or end a fight. Kenny is more explosive too throwing endless elbows real muay thai, all 8 limbs. BJ knew jui jitsu very well in an age where almost no one else his weight did and he also has good wrestling takedowns and a decent jab. That is all it took to dominate back then. His biggest win after Matt is Sherk. And Matt also beat BJ…bad. He is not a 155 god. He is right there with Florian and Diego as a top 3 155 in the ufc top 5 over all 155.

by hatteras on Jul 4, 2009 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

1st of all, that big win over Sherk is a big win.

Sherk dominated Kenny all day and Sherk has worked a lot of other solid competition. And that wasn’t an off day for Sherk.

I love that fighting everyone can shut up after the fight is over. Nothing anyone says or reasons in here matters on July 11th, they just go fight.

This is why MMA is my favorite sport (well, and many other reasons).

by Bennie Blanco on Jul 4, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

muay thai. kenny’s muay thai is likely the best at 155 in the whole world. he is also great in the clinch. i still think bj wins but if kenny can keep him on the end of his kicks and punches, then he could win this.

that being said, i think bj wins this fight.

by JB on Jul 4, 2009 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nothing bad to bash him about but his personality? I think that’s generally the main thing to bash people about.

John – Don’t know if you saw an old post i made but did you see Buakaw vs John Wayne last weekend? i am having serious doubts about him winning MAXX. Man, seriously he’s a big nog at 27. It was his 226th fight. Right now Kyshenko and petrosyan are the best bets. Still though, i hope he wins.

Oh yea, kenny by whatever he wants. He’s gonna work the body to rob him of that cardio which we still haven’t seen at LW. (Also Never will acknowledge Baby jay after his mommy testified at NSAC even if he’ll probly win here.)

NNR: although your news saddens me, thanks for informing me because I havent actually gotten a chance to watch the fight yet. I too feared that he went Big NOg on us after all the wars, I was hoping that we were wrong, so this news is disturbing.

I primarily root for BUakaw against basically anyone he is ever matched up against. But if he doesnt win it, I would want to se Petrosyan win it!

NNR: YOU are better then that. Deep down in inside you KNOW that bJ wont be losing his lIghtweight title any time soon!

Good on BJ for handling this pre-fight hoopla minus the silly trash-talk. A much classier version of Penn than we’re used to. Maybe he’s learned from some of his many mistakes.

I think not.

by Lester The Pimp on Jul 3, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, maybe it’s just that I’m a firm believer in second chances. BJ can’t erase his past transgressions, and make no mistake, I shall continue to mock him for them with great vehemence and much cruelty. ;-)

That said, if the guy is making an effort to be a better person (or even just come off as one) then I feel obligated to commend him for it.

by Jeremyjackson on Jul 3, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Great post JJ. I too am big on second chances. It doesnt matter to me how many times a man messes up, as long as he eventually gets it right, I will praise him for it! changing isnt easy too do, and it takes admitting that you were wrong to make yourself change, so I gotta get behind BJ for that!

by JOhn G on Jul 3, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m good for 2nd chances too. He got humbled, didn’t know how to handle it at first and now he isn’t making sweeping statements. He just said, “ok, I’m training hard and you better be ready too. You’re going to knock me out? ok, lets see.”

This is good trash talk that invovles no trash.

I can’t say I don’t like trash talk as michael jordan was the king of trash talk and my favorite athlete.

I think it’s just weird to hear BJ not being a douche. He’s been playing that role for quite a while now (because he is a douche). So, the quiet and meek BJ comes off weird. I dont think Florian will win, but its not out of the realm of possibility.

I think since BJ got sent back to earth after the beating he took from GSP we won’t be hearing much trash talking from him anymore!

by Griffinfan05 on Jul 3, 2009 6:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He obviously didn’t take speech class where they tell you to avoid distracting motions with your arms.

He comes off as nervous in front of the camera.

On another note, BJ’s juvenile-seeming attitude really irritates me to the point of wanting to see him get his whinny head BASHED IN.

by Mc19 on Jul 3, 2009 7:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He looks way more fit than he did a month out from the GSP fight.

Let’s face it, GSP was able to manhandle BJ because he’s a huge WW, whereas Florian is not even a particularly big LW. GSP is also maybe the best P4P fighter in the world. Florian is only perhaps one of the top 5 LW’s in the world. I think Sanchez could give him a run, as well as Edgar, Sherk, Griffin and Maynard.

BJ is on another level than these guys at LW. If he doesn’t prove it against Florian, it will be a big surprise.

There’s no way that Florian has the edge on the ground. At best, his jits can neutralize Penn there for stretches of the fight, but I can’t fathom him actually scoring points on the ground against BJ.

To his credit, Florian is wily and elusive on his feet and mixes it up well. But BJ has the edge in power beyond a doubt. Takedown defense is all Penn.

You can make fun of BJ based on his poor showing against GSP (the trash talking really bit him in the ass)— but you can’t deny that he looks ready to fight. Kenny Florian is a great overachieving fighter who has improved tremendously, but I don’t think he’s ready to deal with a BJ Penn that is on a mission to redeem himself.

I think BJ is gonna finish him with extreme prejudice, but Florian will put up a hell of a fight.

i think adam g doesnt want to get his hopes up, after this loss its going to be the end of the line for bj. He will realize he wasnt even comprtitive against gsp, and florian after picking him apart will force bj to call it quits. Like gsp has stated i dont think bj is going to have any answers . Kenny has a huge reach advantage, unlike sherk, great movemrnt, he will circle, and use leg kicks, and his muay thai to keep bj at bay, and batter him. Bj has good boxing , but fllorian has better overall striking, on the ground their jits neutralize each other, no one will submitt the other. I expect kenny to also have vastly improved wrestling from training with GSP, ND WONT BE SUPRISED if he takes bj down, anyway i dont see bj winning a single round

Dang alot of you people are a bunch of haters. BJ is one of the best LW in the world. I think you people might forget he moved up a weight class to fight GSP and got man handled. The same thing would happen to GSP if he moved up to fight A. silva. The only thing I give Kenny the edge in is the Muay Thai nothing else. I believe BJ has the better standup and a slight edge in the BJJ department. Kenny won’t TKO BJ nor submit him, the only way Kenny will win is by outscoring BJ in the same fashion he did Huerta. I believe this fight will end in a UD in favor of Kenny.

It doesnt matter how good a shape BJ is in, everytime he fights his opponent is in way better condition than him. If this fight goes deep Kenny has the advantage.

For all of you bad talking BJ Penn…..don’t forget this guy is an animalon te ground….If I am not mistaken even Kenny himself has gone there to train with him in the past….If I were Kenny I would stop talking sht to pump myself up cause Bj will end up putting him to sleep or snapping his arm off just to spite him. Remmember how longhe held that choke on Jens!!! Jens learned his lesson for running his mouth to BJ and Kenny will learn his soon too.

I didn’t even watch the video because the last video I watched was when BJ Penn said he was going to kill GSP. We all know what happened there. I for one think Kenflo has an excellent chance of winning and I hope he does.

Strange video….kinda creepy. Oh and I hope BJ gets destroyed.

I think that BJ is still not over the beating. He knows the MMA world is laughing at him, he’s no longer the “cool kid”, but rather the one people are laughing at.

GSP is still in his head. His insecurity is apparent here. To give him credit, he does look in good shape. His cardio is prolly improved.

I for one like BJ, at least as a fighter anyway, but I cannot picture Kenny as the champ, and even if he somehow beats BJ, I don’t think he’ll hold the belt very long with Diego, Maynard around.

BJ looks in the best shape I’ve seen him in over the past 3 or 4 years, but he comes off as being insecure in this video. He shouldn’t even have posted it and I think the only reason he did was to prove he’s in shape, which he is. If BJ can get his confidence back Kenny is in trouble. Kenny is like a little nerdy/bony kid who cannot finish a fight except against Joe Stevenson who got schooled in the BJJ department. I think BJ will finish Kenny in the 2nd round. I expect Kenny to run and circle and circle trying to avoid as much damage as possible much like he did in the Huerta fight.

BJ is playing this perfectly. Flying under the radar, not much talking, just getting prepared for the fight. BJ is an animal who lost to the best fighter in the world (at least top 3). BJ wins in a blood bath 2nd round.

Is it me or is BJ more ripped than he has ever been? Maybe the GSP fight knocked some sense into him. He went from a fighter in my top 5 to being one of the most hated fighters for being such a freakin crybaby & a guy who doesn’t take his fights seriously enough. No heart. War K-Flo just for that. I do see BJ working out so he is in shape enough for a GSP/Penn fight in the future. Unfortunatly GSP still has a long head start over him.

If BJ cleans out the LW division in the same manner in which he beat Sherk and Stevenson, he may get another crack at GSP before his career is over. Right now, he needs to redeem himself with a huge win over Florian. He can’t even let the fight be close, he has to overwhelm him.

I’d say he looks better than I’ve ever seen him fitness-wise before a fight, and we’re still a month out. He doesn’t have the relaxed cockiness that he did before the GSP fight (huge mistake). He looks desperate and hungry, which doesn’t bode well for Florian. I do give Florian credit for being a very resilient and smart fighter and I don’t believe he will go down without putting up a hell of a fight, but I see BJ owning him in the end with a submission finish.

I doubt many would want to see gsp/penn 3 and the UFC would have difficulty marketing it.

I met BJ shortly after his win over Sherk and I was so excited to get to meet him until I actually met him… I’ve met and talked to several fighters “Mike Bisping, Rampage, Dean Lister, Faber, ect” and they seem happy and enthused to meet their fans! BJ on the other hand looked bothered and a bit annoyed… He did take the picture with me and signed my BJ Penn, Cage Fighter Walk out shirt but I can tell he would have rather be left alone! The second day he saw us and totally avoided me and my three friends… That day he lost several fans….Although I respect him as a talented fighter I will always route for the athlete that loves and genuienly appreciates his fans…. With that said “WAR KEN-FLO!”
