Alves hasn’t fought since hughes right? how long ago was that, ufc 87? does any one think the ring rust might be a factor, or has he fought any one since. I mean $h!t even hughes fought after that fight, and he is all about those long lay off lately.

i stand corrected, but 90 was a pretty long time ago as well. oh well, hope its a good fight and not just gsp on top the whole time. Both these guys are such good strikers, it could be briliant.

yeah alves chose to wait out a title fight~
he could have fought agian inbetween but, decided to waitand fight the winner of gsp/bj~
i dont blame him, and i dont think he will have cage rust~ ufc 90 wasn’t that long ago..
by stinky~fingers on Jul 1, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
alves sounds confident, and he is a bad mo flicker, i think it would be great to see gsp get frustrated in the stand up, then not be able to keep alves down, i haven’t seen him stressed since gsp vs bj 1, serra too him out to quick to see him sweat.
by Blazy J on Jul 1, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i dont think gsp will have half the problem with avles as most think~
thiago is definitely a top notch fighter~ but imo, gsp is on another level then all ww fighters that walk this earth~
when gsp needs the fight on the ground, it will happen!!
if he cant put alves away on the ground, he will exhaust him there, stand up and put him away~
gsp for the win~ this fight is not going the extra rounds..
it will be over in 3, imo~
by stinky~fingers on Jul 1, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
your probably right, i just hope it’s a close war, like i said these two guys could really make a beautiful fight, if alves can keep it standing more than not.

Right on Stink, I’ve argued this stuff for the last three GSP fights and I thought after GSP v BJ it would be over. GSP can hold down every WW on the planet period.
GSP will dominate Alves!

Damn right Stinky; I can agree with you on this one. IMO Georges has already beaten more well rounded fighters than Alves.
by O damn he got caught on Jul 1, 2009 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You all forget that you don’t lose to the well rounded fighters, you lose to the dangerous ones.
GSP lost to Serra once, not because he was so well rounded. It was because he had power and got caught.
When the other guy has KO power, watch out.

i agree 100% stinky..and this is just to bug you.. I heart gsp..he is hot now only if he didn’t have the frenchie accent..damn it!!
by sarah on Jul 1, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think Serra was all that dangerous, But I think GSP was way off that night. He took Serra for granted, and payed for it. He gang raped Serra in the next fight, and did worse to B.J.. I don’t think there is a chance in hell that he takes Alves for granted, in fact I would imagine he trains harder for this fight than he did against Penn. GSP can get this fight to the ground, and from there he is a better fighter than Alves. I agree with Stink, it will be a good fight, but not as close as some may think.
by naturalshadow on Jul 1, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Serra accidentaly hit him behind the ear!!!!!!!!
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 1, 2009 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think SErra, Hughes or BJ was dangerous at all, the UFC hyped those fights up so much and that clouded ppl’s judgement…. Thiago Alves is the real deal and i feel sry for GSP cause he is such a good guy and a great champion, but i don’t think he’ll withstand the striking power and the standup techniques aswell as the takedown defense of Thiago…

lol sarah~ and im just saying this to bug u back,,

Rob,
The absolute best WW takedown defense in the world can not stop GSP from putting you on your back. Against, GSP if you make him try more than once for a takedown, you are doing great. However, if he wants the fight there, it will go there. The only way GSP loses is if he takes a big shot and decides to keep it standing. He would have to beat himself. I’m telling you, GSP is as much a lock as you will find at the title shot level.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 1, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And yeah Stink, you’re back on the side of right, lol. (Guida showed a crazy chin so I don’t hold that call too much against you)

I think this fight is going to be determined in the first few seconds of the bout. Whoever is the faster starter is gonna win i think. Also Alves is better at “restarting that engine” if you will since he can build up momentum with his striking but get taken down. He just gets right back up and can restart. The only time gsp had his offense shut down that i can think of is the BJ fight and the damage he incurred didn’t allow him to get back into it like himself. Without much experience in getting shut down, i don’t know how he recoups if alves is able to stuff some of his takedowns. I know that was a long time ago and i don’t think it will factor in this but for some reason it keeps bugging me. Anyways, i love both fighters so i just hope that we see a great technical battle in all areas with the better coming out on top. As far as Alves, anyone out there see value in him at +260?
by NameNotRequired on Jul 1, 2009 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
there’s tons of value on Alves, that’s a must!! he’s going to win!!
what people don’t realize is that Alves is going to stop the fight inside the first two rounds, he has the ability to end it in the first minute, all he needs is to connect with some punches or a knee when GSP comes in, he even dropped Kos with a left jab..
by RoB on Jul 2, 2009 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes stinky..fully aware..thus i did it..generally speaking i only comment about fighters abilities or lack their of..i am not actually “one of those chicks” but i think that’s the last you’ll hear of that crap from me..
i think NameNR is totally right on the first few seconds of the fight being pivotal on the outcome..and i doubt there will be more than few seconds of the testing water technique before someone explodes..i want to believe that this fight will showcase gsp being leagues above most ww’s.. but alves is a tough youngin and there are dangers for georges.
by sarah on Jul 2, 2009 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
GSP’s speed will be too much for Alves. He has a ‘punchers’ chance but I’d give him nothing more. I see GSP finishing this fight late in the 3rd or 4th round. I don’t think Alves will have the juice to make a decision.
What are the odds on Alves making weight?
by Arnold on Jul 2, 2009 7:19 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If GSP wins, I will be my first wrong call in 20 months. It’s bound to happen at some point. My streak can’t last forever, but I don’t think GSP is going to be the one to bust my streak.

I guess your forgetting that he whooped on Koscheck. He beat 3 of the biggest douches in the UFC all in 1 calander year. How does anyone not love this guy?
by BNF on Jul 1, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well put about the 3 biggest douches… I couldn’t have been happier to see Karo get KO’d. I didn’t know who was more upset, Karo or Rogan?

Right, I think they are buddy buddy and have trained together before. I love Rogan, but sometimes he is a bit biased.

I like Alves, but like Stinky said above, I think GSP takes this one. I think Georges is too smart to play into Alves’ hands, and if he does get in trouble on the feet he will put Alves on his back and wear him out.
by Diceman on Jul 1, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
When he does get into trouble on his feet is when Alves is gonna know that GSP wants to take it to the ground, and that way see it coming sit back and defend it…
by RoB on Jul 2, 2009 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
hmm I don’t consider GSP the P4P fighter in the world… he sure is up their but i don’t think he’s got it yet- Either way its gonna be a amazing fight, but i see GSP via UD winning this fight, i don’t think GSP can KO or TKO Alves or Submite him- WAR GSP- Then hopefully after he wins we can see A.Silva vs GSP- and a rematch between Fitch and Alves- it would be sick to see after they both have evolved so much to see who would win second time around.
by ricky on Jul 1, 2009 2:17 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
after kos got knocked out in his last fight i doubt they wanna consider that as big of a win as hughes
by Jared on Jul 1, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
this fight isnt going to a decision..no way thiago has the cardio to counter the pace of gsp for 25 minutes…if alves doesnt finish this fight in the first 3 he sure as hell isnt gonna finish gsp in the championship rounds…
by HellaHectic on Jul 1, 2009 2:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i agree but damn do i ever want thiago to win. gsp has looked unbeatable in his last few fights and i think thiago is going to catch georges around the second round with a big strike.
by Jared on Jul 1, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
LOL shock the world….give yourself somemore credit thiago, your no serra, this fight is close to 50/50 IMO. GSP does have more tools and is IMO a better figher but thiago is a very powerfull striker and that is the X factor in this fight. On paper there close, both dominated koscheck and won a decision, both dominated hughes and finished him within 2 rounds. I’ll be rooting for gsp but will be surprised if he dominates alves, but then again would be surprised if alves dominates gsp. Gsp completely took bj’s strengths away from him, and can’t wait to see what happens in this fight, what stadegy gsp uses here. All I really hope for other than gsp winning is a good fight something that goes atleast 3 rounds not some quick flash KO.
by nathan on Jul 1, 2009 3:21 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
GSP has no advantages? Just a bigger name? WOW Thiago! Keep telling yourself that when your on your back getting your face smashed. Thiago may have the striking advantage, but GSP has the advantage everywhere else.
by LJ on Jul 1, 2009 3:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
GSP looks extra greasy in that picture. I hope the NSAC keeps a close eye on him and his cheating corner pre-fight and fight time to make sure that Greasy St.Pierre doesn’t lather up with petroleum jelly.
by xxBAxx816 on Jul 1, 2009 4:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Alves is definitely the best striker in the ww division. But, this isn’t kickboxing. Problem is, he’s not a real well rounded fighter like GSP. GSP is right, he does have more tools. that’s why he’s #1 or 2 on the p4p list. GSP could submit him, gnp him or ko him. Alves’ only shot is a KO.
by Rich on Jul 1, 2009 4:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It’s been a while since St. Pierre has been in the octagon with a high-level striker. His last fights were against Penn (twice), Fitch, Koscheck, Serra (twice), Hughes (twice), Trigg and Mayhem Miller. All of those fighters are primarily wrestlers or submission fighters, even though BJ does have good boxing.
I do think Alves has a better chance than most thing, but I still believe St. Pierre is a little better at more aspects of the MMA game.
by MMAMoneyLine on Jul 1, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You don’t think that Fitch is a better fighter than Alves – you DAMN RIGHT HE IS!!!! Alves is a perhaps either the top 3rd or 4th MW fighter – sure he can strike but he also hasn’t fought much lately, has trouble cutting weight, and if the fight goes in the 3rd round, he will be gassed and will have his nose end up looking like an ear with all the GNP he will be getting. GSP will take this fight to the ground and dominate.
by deadgrassinyard on Jul 1, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fitch is not even close to being a better fighter than Alves is…. only thing he has on Alves is offensive wrestling
by RoB on Jul 2, 2009 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If they have a rematch, I guarantee that Fitch would win again. Alves is overrated and will either gas out or lose via submission in the 3rd round against GSP.

They won’t. They are both smart cats. Alves knows he doesn’t have GSP’s stanima. Alves is not names the Pitbull for nothing. he will attack from the get go & GSP knows this. I can’t wait to see GSP’s gameplan.
WAR GSP!!!

I’m astonished that way more people were picking BJ over GSP than Alves over GSP. I didn’t think BJ would beat him, and I don’t think Alves will either, but I definitely think Alves is a bigger threat to GSP.
by Diceman on Jul 1, 2009 5:55 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
We know that now, but coming into the 2nd fight the only reason I was picking BJ over GSP was because of the first fight. I thought Penn worked him over pretty good in rd 1 of the first fight so I gave him a stand up advantage. Then if you take and give BJ the hands advantage and consider just how flexible and good he is on the ground it just seemed like no matter where Georges took the fight he was going to have a battle on his hands. Since Penn had fought at 170 and even subbed Matt Hughes before; I really didn’t think the size and physique would be so much of a factor. I think the reason Alves isn’t getting a fair shake here is because of his ground game. If it hits the ground you’d have to be crazy to think Alves is going to hold his own grappling with GSP.
by O damn he got caught on Jul 1, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, size is definitly a factor. GSP will win but will have quite the battle controlling this big guy. Alves is a big dude with lotsa balance.
by neeko on Jul 1, 2009 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understand the thought process O Damn, but I guess I just really felt confident that BJ was out of his league going into their second fight. The amount that GSP had improved his physical and mental game since their first fight, coupled with his distinct size advantage just made me really think GSP would have no trouble controlling BJ. I think Alves’ size and striking will be much more of a problem than anything an undersized and cardio-slug BJ could pose.
by Diceman on Jul 1, 2009 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe, but remember, Penn stopped EVERY TD attempt Georges threw at him in the 1st rd. Can you name another fighter that has stuffed GSP for even 1 rd when he wanted to take them down?
by O damn he got caught on Jul 2, 2009 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Honestly thiago’s boxing isn’t as good as he’s getting credit for, and IMO I think gsp might beat him in a straight up boxing match. He has kind of stubby arms and is only good in the pocket, gsp will have a nice reach advantage, lytle owned alves in the standup in the first round with his boxing. What gives alves the advantage with boxers is his powerful leg kicks to keep them out of range, which he did to lytle and if he fought bj he would do the same, but penn would own him in a boxing match IMO. Gsp also has great leg kicks, can move in and out of range, but just lacks the power and knee’s of thiago. I also think alves build gives people a false sense of his abilities too, its not a bodybuilding contest…the one who fights best on fight night wins this one, not the most muscular or strongest.
by nathan on Jul 1, 2009 6:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If you think about this fight rationally and look at alves last 4 fights none of them were good strikers, only lytle was a good boxer who owned alves in the first round, and koscheck even won a round in the stand up. GSP is a much better striker than these guys, better wrestler and better at bjj, athletism, cardio, game plan. IMO alves only chance is to catch gsp with a hit, and rock him, which has only happened once in 20 fights. The more I think about this fight with emotion aside the more it favors gsp, but again this MMA you can expect the unexpected.

I really don’t care about the Lesnar/Mir fight as much as this one. Put this one as the headliner. I don’t see the Lesnar/Mir fight going past 1 round. This is gonna be way more exciting to watch then a 280 pound beast tackling Mir than hammer punching his head in. I hope I am wrong. The great thing about GSP is that we never know what he is gonna do in his next fight.
WAR GSP!!!

no one seems to realize how good gsp is with his hands and he does have power. Alves is going to be shocked. And if he thinks his knee n kicks are guna get gsp he’s guna get frustrated.
by gogogo on Jul 1, 2009 7:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
First off alves is a predominately a counterstriker. So I dont think he will be bringing the action he will try to counteract what gsp does. Second i dont think the weight is going to be a issue here. Gsp is a big ww and alves prolly is 5 pounds more then him. Bj was 164 and that was bodyfat that a weight disavantage. People making a deal out of the weight are just selling the fight. I think we going to see a fight very similar to the gsp hughes 3 fight. Gsp mounts grabs a arm and thats a wrap folks round2!

for some reason I think this would be a short fight .. with GSP winning via gnp .. ref stopping the fight .. and same would happen in the Lesnar Mir fight too .. with Brock winning .. ref stoppage .. hype is always huge for these kind of mega fights but they have a tendency to end pretty quick .. don’t get me wrong I am still buying this pay per view .. no way I am missing it.

I want to no why the UFC is promoting the Mir fight as the main event.Gsp could be the best pound for pound in the world,Alves is awsome too. This could be the best fight of the year. And Brock and Mir are probabley not even in the top ten HW in the world. If you ask me they are way over rated and under skilled. The hole HW division in the UFC is a little weak. The WW division is stacked with great fighters.I don’t even care too see the Mir fight,I think they both suck.
