UFC Quick Quote: Is Brock Lesnar too big and too slow for MMA?

"Honestly, I think big guys are easier to fight. They don't move as fast, they get tired quickly and they're not as technical.... If I want to sharpen my tools I have to work with somebody who's not a sitting target like Forrest. Who moves around a lot, he's extremely conditioned. He's fast and can throw 300 punches compared to 30 punches a round. Forrest is my worst nightmare. Basically you have to go for broke and knock him out, and if you don't he's still going to be standing there coming after you.... There's so many things going on in the fight. I think his mind will be paralyzed because he's having to deal with so many new elements. Instead of going for things real slow and powerful, I may as well go for speed so I can add more chaos to his brain."

-- UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir tells CageWriter.com that he has enlisted faster, busier and lighter training partners such as Forrest Griffin to help him get ready for the 6'2" 285-pound ball of muscle also known as Brock Lesnar. Mir and Lesnar are scheduled to rematch in the main event at UFC 100 on July 11. Mir -- a Brazilian jiu-jitsu stylist -- took home the win (and almost Lesnar's leg) with a first round submission in their initial encounter back in 2008. So will speed and technique be too much for Lesnar to handle or will the behemoth be able to rely on his brute strength, wrestling and big 'ole hamhocks to carry him to victory?

Did Frank “5 Minute” Murr just say that Brock will get tired??? If Murr thinks Brock is slow and tired, then the untimely death of Murr is a foregone conclusion.

I know what you mean allamerican. I find myself posting less than I used to. Maybe I spit the bit right out of the gate. I usually just jump in for the occasional, friendly insult, or a note of agreement.

DANA WHITE NEEDS to sign Vitor ASAP! Not only is their a great fight on the Horizon between Vitor and Anderson, but mr. Wanderei Siva is said to be fixated on getting a rematch with the man who embarressed him in brazil (Vitor)!

"Sooner or later [the rematch] is going to happen. I’m ready to face anyone, including him." – Wanderlei!

Now thats an epic match up right there!

Interesting comment by Murr seeing that he is KNOWN for having bad conditioning and in thier first fight, it sure looked like Brock’s punches were quicker than Frank’s.

Looks like Murr is wrong on all accounts here except saying that Lesnar is powerful.

no doubt John…the possibilities are endless with Vitor in the UFC…AS maybe but I could see him really doing a number on Wandy

I think you guys misunderstood what he meant.
He was talking about big training partners. They are not fast enough so he had to get Forrest.
Brock is a very unique Heavyweight so you wont be able to get someone similar to train with.

Ah yes, just re-read the article and it makes sense now. He’s trying to prepare for brock’s speed by bringing in faster guys. God I hope Mir wins somehow. I mean everything about brock is awesome, except the person he is.

by just some dong on Jun 30, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John, Vitor-Wandi II would be awesome. I’ve never seen anything like their first fight, Vitor’s hands were so quick it was scary.

Lesnar is really quick for his size, he’s proven that in all of his fights. Cardio may be a question mark, as he seemed to tire against Couture, but it’s definitely a weak point for Mir, so it’s smart for him to work on this with cardio machines like Forrest. I have Lesnar winning by TKO, but if Mir is training as hard as he is implying then this could be the best that he has ever looked, and I hate Mir so I’m starting to get worried.

To be honest this article is pretty misleading, normally Mir says some dumb things but in this case all he said was that he wanted to train with smaller, faster fighters like Forrest. Sure he has to train with some big wrestlers to be prepared for Brock but Forrest should be an excellent training partner for Mir.

by David W-S on Jun 30, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mir is full of crap. He said Forrest is his worst nightmare? hahaha!!

I don’t know anyone else who would actually say Forrest is tougher to fight than Brock Lesnar.

by ProKev on Jun 30, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ProKev, I interpreted it as Mir saying that Forrest is a tough training partner who pushes him further than a big bulky guy would, which is why he’s training with him instead of a large HW for Lesnar, he’s not actually dismissing Lesnar as being too big and slow as far as I can tell. Forrest is a cardio machine and has one of the best work ethics in MMA, whilst Mir is notorious for being lazy so for once I can see his point.

There is a chance that Mir will come into this fight in the best shape of his life, so that has me worried for Brock’s chances as Mir’s cardio has always been what has held him back.

Maybe Frank doesn’t remember much, because he did get hit in the face like 500 times but Brock took him down with ease and didn’t get hit once. So Somebody tell frank to ask a friend to load up the video and watch it. That is if your eye is healed from the last beating you took. Brock is faster and stronger then you. So next interview just say something like “If I can avoid not getting killed until I can get him in a submission hold i may have a chance.”

by JJKID on Jun 30, 2009 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Frank just has to say this stuff, I am not a Frank fan but I know he can’t be that dumb. In their last fight Frank was slower, weaker, just had more experience and was more technical. Now he doesnt have the experience factor going for him as much. Frank is going down in a huge way, I think Randy would beat Frank and we know what Lesnar did to Randy. It may not be over as fast only becasue Lesnar wont’t want to clich or stay close to Frank, but he will finish him in the stand-up I think. Frank is overconfident from his last fight with his stand-up power and speed. Nog was slow and always has been, but usually can trade with anyone. Frank will find out very quick that hitting Lesnar with a jab is like hitting a Grizzly with a BB gun, only pisses him off. Frank can throw 10 perfect jabs, but it only takes one big “Ham Wawk” to kill a Murrrrr.

by Cantrim on Jun 30, 2009 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually Lesnar didnt look like he liked getting hit at all when he fought Randy. I know Mir isnt known for his power either, but I bet he hits a whole lot harder than Randy. Im not saying Mir wins this fight, but we havent seen how Brock reacts to getting hit with a hard combo.

Yea that makes sense, train with a guy who’s style is completely opposite of the guy you’re going to fight; that way you can get a real good feel for what to expect here. Brock by complete domination.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 30, 2009 9:52 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Here here odamn, training with Forrest Dump’s really gonna prepare you. Should have tried to get the Incredible Hulk in to spar with, he’s the only thing that compares to Lesnar.

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

O damn i disagree, he needs to improve his own game and not try too much to think of what Lesnar does…
Mir needs speed and most importantly technique, so sparring with a big dude who has zero standup technique and only power would be worthless…

by RoB on Jun 30, 2009 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No it wouldn’t be worthless, there’s a big difference between Forrest Griffin taking you down and a big HW fighter taking you down; a diff between moving around, locking up subs and getting up from under a guy like Forrest and doing the same with a huge HW fighter. Not to mention the insane reach that Lesnar has that everyone is going to have to deal with. You don’t train with a LHW guy that you can bully around and out muscle when the guy you’re going to fight is bigger and stronger than you are IMO. And to top that off, like Mac said up above; to sit here saying that Lesnar is slow… He must be blind.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 30, 2009 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m just saying, he’s going to train with small fast guys, then he’s going to step into the ring with a guy thats 280 lbs come fight night, 87" reach or so; who’s stronger and bigger than he is. He was better off bringing in Shane Carwin, Tom Erikson, or someone, anyone with big size and good ground skills.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 30, 2009 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s training with Forrest on his stand up. Don’t know why you think he’s trying to use Forrest as a Brock dummy but I’m pretty sure he’s just trying to get used to a barage of punches and endurance by training with Forrest. A decent call but I would also make sure I’m training with a big power puncher and an amazing take down artist. Sherk is to small to match Lesnars strength but I’m sure he could teach Mir better take down defense. Valequez would be a good choice to train with against Lesnar but if Mir really wants to win he should go train with Fedor lol. I’m a little depressed to hear this tho because it seems like Mir isn’t focusing on the right aspects of his game, but I thought the same thing before he fought Nog and I still rooted for Mir to win and he did. So here’s nothing, Mir by achilles lock in the first. (I don’t think Mir can survive to the second unless he has ground control the whole first)

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jun 30, 2009 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Blah, who knows, it says he’s got some big guys in the cage writer article; I guess we’ll see. I still don’t think 10 Forrest punch’s are going to equal 1 shot from Brock but time will tell.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 30, 2009 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

way to take control Odamn. Its really not my intention to come on this site evry day and Bash Frank Mir, but how else could I possibly respond to this?

HOw in the world does training with forrest to fight Brock make any kind of sense? Frank Mir should be training with a guy like Shane Carwin, or bobby Lashly….If I were Mir, Forrest is the last person that would want to prepare me to fight Brock. LIke I said, Mir should be grappling with guys like Carwin and Lashley, and be sparring against someone with a lot of power, and a super long reach….I dont know how Forrets fits the bill in either of these scenario’s. I am baffled by this quote!

and what the hell is Mir talking about Brock being slow? if Brocks slow, what does that Make Mir? Brock weighs about 45 lbs more then Mir, yet Brock is still the faster of the two, and I dont even think its close. Mir isnt 1/10th of the athlete that Brock is.

I dont get this quote at all. I am completely Baffled!

All I know, is half my knot will be riding on the bROCKness MONSTER come July 11th!

misinformation? I don’t believe anything fighters say about thier pre-fight training anymore. And I don’t listen to Mir. He’s big into the psych part of the game so he says what he thinks will help not what he’s really thinking. After the fight he may speak a little truth…….if he can speak.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 30, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lol I can’t say I disagree, I was just trying to make sense out of why he’s training with Forrest. After my first attempt was obviously rebuttled I guess all I can go with is he’s playing mind games with Lesnar. Trying to throw him off his game, otherwise I pretty much agree that Mir may have dove off into the deep end.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jun 30, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by John G on Jun 30, 2009 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John— Here’s why training with Forrest makes sense: Mir wants to see Lesnar’s punches coming. He’s going to be looking to move. Sparring with Forrest is going to make Brock seem a lot slower (in terms of hand speed) on fight night. I’m sure Mir saw the Randy fight; he knows that if he even gets clipped, he’s going to fall.

You also have to keep in mind that sparring is not like an actual fight; nobody is looking to knock anyone out. You can’t really prepare for knockout power; you can just prepare to avoid it, by working on your head movement, footwork, etc…

And lastly, Forrest is not the only guy Mir is training with. I’m sure he’s wrestling with heavyweights, and sparring with fighters who have longer reach.

Since when has Forrest been renowned for having “fast hands”.

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

THis is a good deabte. I dont agree with everything being said, but all good points.

I know you dont want to KO your training partners in sparring. But to some extent, Mir has got to get used to tasting the power of brock. I just think he has to be mentally ready to take one of those shots…and thats where I dont see the value of Forrest’s pitty pat punches. IMO, Frank shouldnt concentrate too much on Brocks hand speed, he needs to learn how to deal with Brock’s reach, which is exactly what caught the master gamplanner Couture off balance and cause him to buckle.

He needs to be sparring with someone with Monkey arms like Kongo or tim Sylvia, Wes sims or with really long arms…problem is, I doubt any of those fighters would help Mir out!

by John G on Jun 30, 2009 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know what O damn or John is talking about… O damn Mir is pbviously talking about sparring with Forrest in the standup not wrestling or BJJ!
and what he has to do to counter Lesnar and improve his own game which is more important than anything is bringing in someone like Forrest, with speed and technique cause that is what’s it’s ALL ABOUT, I know there are faster and more technical guys than Forrest but almost all HW’s are obviously slower than most LHW’s anyway with their size…

Im sure he spars with alot of different standup guys, but to train standup with guys like Tim Sylvia, Lashley, Carwin would do nothing to improve his standup cause those guys have no technique and they are all slow that would give him nothing!

by RoB on Jun 30, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and the secret to not taste Lesnar’s power is spelled DEFENSE and movement! not the type of defense that Wanderlei rolls with, leaving your chin exposed and eating punches with your face..

by RoB on Jun 30, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rob the cagewriter article says he trains with big guys too; Forrest is just one of the smaller people he brought in. So, Mir IS training with the bigger guys; and you may not feel that he gains anything from that (which I don’t understand how you figure that one) but obviously Frank Mir and his trainers feel that it benefits him to train with some bigger guys.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 30, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And I don’t see how you figure Forrest Griffin is a better Wrestler than Carwin or Erikson. Frank would probably benefit from a little more aggression in his stand up, or he could go Tito Ortiz style and be ALL defense with absolutely NO offense and ZERO striking skills.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 30, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe Frank could fake a back injury pull out of the fight, then he can spend the next two years or so not fighting while still doing interviews talking about how relevant he is in MMA and what a big star he is.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 30, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just said that he didn’t train wrestling or BJJ with Forrest only standup… I do not see where i said anything about wresling… take a sec and chill!

Bigger guys with reach are of course good to spar (standup) with if they’re technical and fast we’re talking about pro boxers and real kickboxers not big Carwin’s or Lashley’s cause all they have is size and power and Mir is not that big guy with that power so he needs to concentate on how to avoid that power…
I think a big mistake ppl are making is that they concentrate too much on what the other guy is gonna do instead of improving their own game and thinking about what they’re gonna do…

by RoB on Jun 30, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

haha fake a back injury? don’t be pathetic now…
since when did people start having major surgeries for fun?

by RoB on Jun 30, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and you think Tito should say no to doing interviews? He’s a star that’s why he’s doing interviews in the meantime while he’s recovering, blame MMA for having no names or no nothing instead of hating….
And how he speaks about signing for this or that org is how you handle your business, but since MMA is such a strange and small biz people won’t understand that..

by RoB on Jun 30, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by A-DuB on Jun 30, 2009 10:19 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Lesner is just as cocky as Mir..lets examine their last 3 fights to determine who has the right to be cocky…

Lesner

1. Lost to Mir which says a lot
2. Beat herring in a decision after dropping him in the 1st
3. TKO Randy, a 45 year old man who was winning the fight imo

Mir

1. Submission of Hardonk…meh
2. Submission of Brock with questionable reffing but a win none-the-less
3. TKO and finishes NOG

IMO Mir has much more of a right to be cocky here. Not only has he beat Lesner already but has held the title before and has struggled to get back to that same title. Not a big fan of either guy but Brock needs to win a few more BIG fights to be able to say what he’s been saying about the title he claims to have earned

Mir loves to talk up a fight. He needs to ask Couture and Herring about his lack of speed.

I really want to see how busy Mir will be after Lesnar lands a good shot on him. I’ll be really impressed with Mir, if this fight goes past the 2nd round. He has never demonstrated any true striking power.

brock lesnar = most overrated fighter in mma history. his boxing is terrible. he’s not technical at all. his jiu-jitsu game is even worse. i wanna see brock go 5 rounds with somebody. 100 bucks says he doesnt have the cardio to even last 4 rounds. i can’t wait for brock to lose again. i hope he enjoys his 15 mins of fame.

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

murrrrr will be destroyed, how can you use the statement of “most overrated fighter”? by lesnars own addmission he is learning as he goes. the size, speed and athletic ability gives him credibility. like lesnar or not, his attributes are undeniable. the only hope muurrrr has is a foot lock in the first 60 seconds, after that his head might actually be removed from his body.i would happily triple that 100 if i knew you. thats easy money.

by daz on Jun 30, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand the naural instinct to make this statement but, exactly how is he overrated? Overrated would mean people are saying he’s good enough to be the UFC HW champ, while not actually being good enogh to be the UFC HW champ…but he is the UFC HW champ.

I don’t get the whole purity of MMA thing. He is a fighter, and he beat one of the best in the world. If he needs less “mma” skill because he is such a freak physically, so be it. I doubt Heath Herring left the Octagon saying “we’ll I’m still a better technical fighter”. No, he was too busy scrounging the floor of the cage for the splintered pieces of his eye socket.

That said, put an equally big, fast, and technical fighter in front of him and he is going to have a tough time. I just don’t know who that is yet, maybe Mir, we’ll see.

sure he may be the champ, but he only had to beat two people to become the champ, one being a 45 yr old man… not to mention this is the weakest division in the UFC, so maybe lesnar really isnt that good? well have to wait and see… i dont even really think mir is a big challenge either, lesnar needs to face a guy like gonzaga or carwin and then well really see what hes made of

I hear you but, I don’t know many people that are saying Lesnar is “unbeatable” or “a god” or “(in tears)the greatest man to ever grace us with his presence” like we say with Fedor.

It is what it is, and he is the HW champ. Any argument about the actual credibilty that holds is certainly up for debate, but you cannot argue with the title itself.

Anyway, I think we all get it. We know he’s not the best, but he is and will be a force in the HW division for sometime.

Brock trains like a beast. It would not surprise me to see him able to go 5 rounds. I also can’t agree with the overrated comment. If you were to say he is inexperienced compared to other fighters, that I could agree with. Overrated just doesn’t work for the guy holding onto the belt.

by Jeff on Jun 30, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea, training with forrest in your guard is totally the same as training with brock in your guard…

by HellaHectic on Jun 30, 2009 10:25 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If Frank Mir really feels that training with Forrest Griffin (max weight no more than 230) to prepare for a huge strong guyt like Lesnar (max weight 280) makes any sense then that tells u something abaout this fight…I always said that in this fight, Lesnar should use his wrestling in reverse and try 2turn it more into a stand up battle….I remember the 1st fight, everytime Lesnar put his fist to Mirs face, he fell down.lol…

by Silva_Rampage on Jun 30, 2009 10:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I hope that’s exactly what Brock does. Punch Murr in the face, make Murr either stand up or quit, repeat until Murr actually does quit. And he will quit.

by PW on Jun 30, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think Bork knows how to punch. It’s a hammerfist or nothing.

No, ask Heath Herring if Brock Lesnar knows how to punch! I’m sure Herring can show you the scars to prove he can!

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Brock does not know “how to throw a punch”, as you say, then you prove my point. His incredible speed and size must make up for it, since he put Mir, Herring and Coutre on the canvass.
So, imagine the potential for a guy that apparently nobody thinks can fight, but is beating up some of the best in the game, and is still relying on his raw size and speed.

Look, I don’t really like defending Brock but, you can not deny the obvious (IMO).

by Jrandolph on Jun 30, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sarcasm, man.
I enjoy a good fight.

Stand up war = good
Throw in some clinch work & transitions = even better
Two guys with awesome jits, making the groundwork a chess match = I’m loving it.
If it goes the full 3-5 rounds = I can’t ask for more.

Bork usually ends up in the dryhump + hammerfist routine.

(…with the exception of when he was spanking Mir on the butt, instead of tapping… which was comical.)

I’ve seen it.
More than once.
It’s not pretty.

Make a list of the top 20 WELL ROUNDED fighters that you really enjoy watching. Do you put Bork on there?

by Drew C on Jun 30, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Forrest also punches like a lady. Nobody fears getting hit by Forrest. Let’s look at Brock’s punches: sent Mir collapsing and sprawling on the mat; crushed Herring’s eye; dropped Randy with a glancing shot.

by PW on Jun 30, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

glancing shot? more like a temple shot..

nonetheless~ brockness does have power~ but

he has never put someone out with one punch..

aside from the temple shot delivered to randy, brock didnt have mir or heath in serious trouble from the "initial punch’ that knocked them down..

both mir and heath were VERY cohearent~

by stinky~fingers on Jun 30, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree. Murr was in serious trouble before Il Moustache intervened on his behalf. And while Herring somehow managed to survive the full 15 minutes, he was for all intent and purpose finished after that first blast dropped him 3 seconds into the fight. Hell, Herring is a 250-pound grown-ass man and thqat punch sent him rolling all the way across the ring, except it was real, not a professional wrestling “sell.”

by PW on Jun 30, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

brockness didnt make him go that far~

heath clearly rolled with the punch as he hit the ground..

and mir wasn’t in immediate trouble either[ off the 1st punch]

the only fighter brock dropped with 1 punch and had in trouble was randy~ and he took it on the temple at 45 years of age and still wasn’t ko’d on the one punch~

by stinky~fingers on Jun 30, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

when brock starts crippling peeps with one punch i will agree..

he has only finished one ufc fight~

mir and heath both took his gnp~ and also took punches standing~

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely dude. Lesnar hits like a bulldozer. He crumpled Randy with a glancing blow, broke Mir’s orbital bone with one shot and dropped Mir twice in their first fight. Mir dosen’t take a good shot either. Brandon Vera KO’d him in the first minute of their fight. That’s a guy who is about 40 lbs smaller than Brock and certainly not the physical prowess that Lesnar is either.
If I were Brock I would keep this fight standing and look to connect with strikes. He won’t make the same mistake trying to just rush in and take Mir down this time.
Lots of luck Mir- you are going to need it this time!

I’m getting the feeling that most of the fans who are commenting have never competed in any level of MMA…or any sort of contact sports… I give Lesnar all the credit in the world because of his athletic prowess in the collegiate ranks and his recent success in the UFC. However, Mir has an established record as a Mixed Martial Artist. On paper, I would give the nod to the dude who already made the ‘champion’ tap out.

Hype doesn’t equate to victory. The only thing I worry about is the fact that Brock should be fighting at SUPER HW and his fists should be labeled as WMD’s according to Newton’s Second Law: Force = mass x acceleration. I.E…One punch can end the night. That being said, I’m partying at Mandalay Beach with 5 bills on Mir proving mma skilz> freaky amateur power

by NoDecoy on Jun 30, 2009 12:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yep, because competing at any level of MMA makes your opinion any better then someone who hasn’t. Im sure neither of the VAN Gundy’s (sorry for the basketball reference) have never Played basketball but The Ron Jeremy look alike is a hell-of-coach. Everyone on the Board Knows Mir is more technical, that is what saved him the first fight. I’ve watched the fight many times and Lesnor dominated every aspect of the fight but inexperiance got the best of him. Lesnars technical skills have improved more then Mirs ability to get hit in the face by lunch boxes. So instead of betting 5 bills on Mir, Give me 250 and I’ll kick you in the junk. I’ll save you some money but either way your gonna be sick to your stomach. Lesnar by TKO first round.

I can’t believe all the Mir haters out there. When Brock was first starting in MMA everyone on this site constantly talked shit about how someone so green who also happened to be a former fake wrestler was getting so much hype, then even got more up in arms about the audacity of the UFC for giving him a title shot after a couple fights. Now everyone is favoring this guy over a seasoned veteran and former champ?!?!? What the hell is going on? I can’t take anything away from Brock, he is a beast of physical specimen who is also athletic and a champion collegiate wrestler. But come on, he’s like the Shaquille O’Neal of MMA…he has the size but he can’t make free throws (i.e. has no technical prowess). I know that Mir is cocky as hell but a lot of it is all psychological. If his ability to get a bunch of guys panties’ in a wad on a message board, he probably is getting in Brock’s head at least a little bit. I’ve been a fan of Mir every since that nasty arm bar on fat boy Tim "The McManiac" Sylvia back in the day and am predicting an upset TKO. However it is certainly possible that Mir won’t be able to catch Brock this time and get pounded out by Brock’s lunch box fists, in which case it will make me a believer. Either way, I can’t wait for this card.

a lot of people reading far more into mir’s quote than there is.
at no point did mir say lesnar is slow. he didn’t even imply it.
he’s just saying forrest is faster than most “big guys”. (he’s basically kissing forrest’s ass)

either way – no matter what frank is talking about (and he does indeed talk too much sometimes) – he really ought to be working out with montsterously BIG, fast guys, and sharpening his wrestling skills.

i love frank, but if he doesn’t respect lesnar’s speed – and FAR SUPERIOR wrestling, he is going to be in a world of hurt.

lesnar is less likely to make some of the same mistakes & caught in a submission.
lesnar is far less likely to get rocked by a few punches than big nog did.
and maybe most importantly – lesnar is less likely to get taken down by frank than the other way around.

by frank on Jun 30, 2009 1:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I just want to put my 2 cents in as far as the Couture vs Lesnar fight. Was is just me or was Randy (hald the size of Lesnar) outwrestling him and controling the huge ball of muscles on the fence. Lesnar with his wrestling titles and size could not outgrapple Randy.
He does hit very hard and caught Randy.

Just my observation. Lesnars “MMA” grappling is ehhh.

He is just huge.

Randy was doing reasonably well vs. Brock until he got caught, but in no way was he winning the fight. He was surviving Lesnar’s takedowns and he got off a decent punch but that’s about all. Had he been able to last into the later rounds it might have been interesting, but I don’t get how people think Randy was somehow in charge of that fight before Lesnar put him down.

Lesnar is for real. If he fights smart he can beat Mir, but I’m gonna lean toward Mir finding an opening and capitalizing.

by revjames13 on Jun 30, 2009 3:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Brock is huge, Brock hits hard, Brock wont gas. Who knows?

First of all, anyone who thinks Brock is huge hasn’t seen Frank Mir walking around at a Grapplers Quest tourney. Brock is huge, but Frank is also really big and might even be taller. As a seasoned grappler Mir shouldn’t have a problem with the weight difference. I’m a BJJ competitor and routinely spar with people who outweigh me 30-60 lbs. The extra weight is tough but my experience and technique usually keeps them in control. It’s almost paradoxical; the larger/stronger/more atheletic the man the slower their technique evolves becuase they are so used to relying on their natural strengths. There will be little if no difference in Brock’s grappling or sub game. Brock’s wrestling will definitely come into play, but an experienced grappler should be able deal with it.

Second, how hard does Brock hit? He caught Herring early with a right and Herring back rolled to avoid falling flat on his back under a larger man. There’s no way Brock hit him hard enough to make him fly that far and do a cartoon-ish flip. He didn’t knock out Herring, or knock his head off, or squish him like a grape. He controlled him and beat him up (no way he’ll do that to Mir). He clipped Randy in the back of the head and knocked him down. It had nothing to do with power.

And gas? He’s had one fight go past 8 minutes of ring time and most of that he was holding a smaller man (with limited offensive grappling) on the ground. For the amount of muscle Brock carries around, he will never be known as a cardio machine.

Conclusion- Aside from a punchers chance, if Brock doesn’t tear his head off, squish him like a grape, brake his skull or just physically eat him, Mir wins this one every time due to superior technique in every area except wrestling.

Good write up GP!

by SoCal on Jun 30, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Terrible write up!

I’ll just pick a few points. If you think Brock lesnar’s extra weight isn’t going to be a factor you’re wrong. This is a real fight and not “sparring” and having to have a giant animal like lesnar pushing you around and lieing on you will fatigue you far quicker than a guy of equal or lesser weight.

“He clipped Randy in the back of the head and knocked him down. It had nothing to do with power” So presumably if i “clipped” randy like that too, it would have the same effect. Of course not,it has everything to do with power.

I maybe wrong but i think that brock was always renowned in his amateur wrestling days for having excellent cardio and lest we not forget Frank Mir is no GSP!

Mir is better at jits and Brock is better at wrestling. The standup is up in the air though. Mir may have better technique but Lesnar clearly has more power.

Mir doesn’t win this every single time! To describe Lesnar as only having a “punchers chance” is naive. Did you see the last fight??? Mir was getting destroyed on the groung till the referee saved him!
