Frank’s starting to look buff, I’m not sure if it’s wise to try and “outbuff” Lesnar – surely training for speed would make more sense? But just hope Mir gives him a few clean shots on the chin, yet to see Lesnar really tested on his stand-up. Want Mir to win (again) really to give MMA more credibility than “the big guy wins” to the casual fans.

by Jimrod on Jun 30, 2009 7:27 AM EDT reply actions

Lesnar is relatively new to MMA so you have to give him some time to learn his game. I’m not a big Lesnar fan myself but the man is a solid specimen and an amazing wrestler. The art of wrestling and ground and pound has made a nice come back. I’m still pulling for Mir to win, but I just want to say I don’t think it’ll push the sport back if Lesnar wins.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jun 30, 2009 7:58 AM EDT up reply actions

me too but just don’t think he can stuff a takedown let alone a Lesner takedown…sub is his only hope and it’ll probably need to be a choke cause Brock won’t leave his limbs hanging out there again

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 8:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah and a choke on that huge fcking neck just wont happen, Brock by TKO.

by Blackbeard on Jun 30, 2009 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions

once a RNC is completely locked in it doesn’t matter how big your neck is…it might just take a few seconds longer

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Best shape he’s ever been in by the look of it. Might see the emergence of a really bad ass Frank Mir in this fight. I’m still taking Brock to win though; it really doesn’t matter how much Frank Buff’s up, just about anyone is always going to be at a physical disadvantage going up against Brock.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 30, 2009 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

He does look extra jacked-diesel!

I’m DRIVING the Mir bandwagon. People can down-play and give reasoning as to why the facts are misleading, but they are still FACTS.

1) Mir showed iron-clad fortitude by weathering a moderately savage beating from the MAN-BEAST that IS Lesnar, to come from behind with a definitive finish of his own.

2) Mir took on a living legend in Big Nog and proceeded to, in the words of Frank Lester, BASH HIS HEAD IN.

by jammin on Jun 30, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that the only way Mir wins is via sub and as we saw in the last fight Brock can muscle his way out of most subs unless he is really dumb and hands it to Mir but like it was said a rear naked choke is game over no matter how big you are. With that said, Brock’s ground game/control is to much for Mir to be able to take his back and have time to sink it in.

by Edgecrusher71 on Jun 30, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Randy showed Brock is fightable (is that word). He showed that Brock can be clenched and rocked. If Mir can mirror that style and avoid the big or glancing blows he may have a chance in the later rounds for a sub. That is the big problem, can anyone avoid that one hit?
I am pulling for Mir to make Brock work for the belt this time!
Brock v Kongo
Brock v Cain

by mmamac on Jun 30, 2009 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Just over a week to see Brock hit the ground crying again! I just can’t wait, I feel all giddy inside. :)

by UFC Champ on Jun 30, 2009 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Brock vs Cain or Kongo? F that, I don’t care if he is a new comer still… Brock vs Carwin! I think Carwin would destroy both Cain and Kongo

by Edgecrusher71 on Jun 30, 2009 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Aye, who else is thinking this fight lasts 15 seconds -

Lesnar sprint, double leg takedown, Mir gets slammed on his ass and in the process sinks in the guillotine choke, wraps legs round Lesnar and both being dry gets it locked in. 8-9 seconds of squirming from Lesnar then the tap… ;)

by Jimrod on Jun 30, 2009 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions

would love if that happened but i think lesnar is too good for that, he’s strong enough that he doesnt have to completely put his neck under mir’s armpit to push down the takedown.

by bobby o'shea on Jun 30, 2009 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

If Mir submits Lesnar, it will be with something less obvious.

The question is “if”.

by DubNub on Jun 30, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Brock is not going to the ground. Murr will go to the ground every time Brock puts a 4XL fist in his face. The only submission that is remotely possible is Murr tapping from strikes.

by PW on Jun 30, 2009 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

He will tap from strikes!(Not a real prediction though…I just hope)

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 30, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope. Mir will be knocked out cold.

I see Brock grabbing him and slamming him into the mat until Mir passes out.

Seriously.

by OJR on Jun 30, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Man when you said that I had a flashback of the big show fight that came to my mind(WWE)…the, one where he actually broke the ring!
Not exactly the same but how great, would that be if the octagon collapse, while Brock’s slamming Mur into the mat…

mir looks huge … or maybe thats because he is standing next to a midget?

but seriously he does look pretty built

mir usually has good strategies but i dont know what he is going to do here, it surely has to be a sub he can try and out box him but he will have had to of worked extensively dealing with speed and power

i think subs his only way but i’m hopin he wins because i seriously dislike lesnar!!!!!

by ufcaddict on Jun 30, 2009 8:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I dont get the hate for Lesnar? The “WWE” thing is lame, Franklin used to be a teacher. Nover used to be a nurse! Jon Jones is taking his time in fighting big name guys and so is Anthony Johnson. Lesnar didnt make us wait 1 or 2 years to see him fight quality opponents. So why so much hate?

by JV on Jun 30, 2009 8:36 AM EDT up reply actions

for me its his arrogance and lack of respect for the fighters that built MMA…despite whether or not he could pummel them

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 8:50 AM EDT up reply actions

that is exactly what i like about Lesnar! and the fun thing about it is that he does more for the sport than any of those dudes ever did… just look at the interest around him and the numbers they get when he’s performing!

by RoB on Jun 30, 2009 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

true…to each his own

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh mY GOd. I agree wuith JV…The end of the world is near! lol

Seriously though. GOod post JV. LIke u said, this guy dove right into the deep end and has been signing on the dotted line to fight big names to prove his worth. At this point I dont even look at Brock as a WWE star…he is a full time MMA fighter. YOU beat Randy Couture and Heath Herring (2 heavyweights with a world of mma experience)…THAT MAKES YOU AN MMA FIGHTER! Dont know many WWE superstars that can beat Randy n Herring in theOctagon. Brock is an MMA fighter. Get used to it haters!

I posted this last week, but I think its a GREAT POINT so I will post it again. There hasnt been a fighter in the history of mma, that has started off his career fighting nothing but Big Names like brock has been doing, and I gotta RESPECT THAT! Especially when you consider the fact that he has absolutely ZERO Amatuer mma experience. I challenge anyone to name 1 mma fighter to have fought better competition then Brock has in the first 5 fights of his mma career!

YOU dont have to be a fan of brock, but EVERYONE should respect the approach that he has taken. IMO he has been respectful in mma, and is hell bent on proving himself as a top mma fighter….and I gotta respect, and get behind that!

If any of you dont at least respect that, then PLEASE, name 1 fighter who has started off his mma career fighting tougher competition than Brock has in his 1st 5 fights. Can anyone name a fighter that has been thrown to the wolves (by choice) more so then Brock?

you tell me who has ever faced better competition in their 1st five fights then:

Pork Fried Rice
Mir (former champ)
Herring (tough SOB, world of experience, fought everyone
Couture (former champ/legend)
mir (former UFC champ)

that alone is impressive, but when you consider that he didnt have the luxury of having an amatuer career…It really makes what Brock has done, nothing short of remarkable! NOt my favorite fighter by any means, but I RESPECT THE FOCK OUT OF WHAT HE IS DOING!!!!

by John G on Jun 30, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Excellent Post John. Those are some of the reason I like him.

by jay on Jun 30, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

thanks man!

by John G on Jun 30, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t like the way he acted after the Herring fight. Even if Herring was talking shit, I don’t like to see 280lb grown min pointing and fake laughing like a 4-year-old. Handle yourself like a man.

It’s also hard for me to get behind a guy who is so much bigger than most of his opponents. I wish the HW class was split. I know that may not be practical now, but at some point I hope to see it.

Having said that, I respect the guys ability and work ethic. Afterall, I’m dropping a lot of money on him. But I can see where the hate comes from. He looks like the bully and has acted like it a few times.

He’s been pretty respectful as of late. I hope he continues down that road.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 30, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I think its VERY practical to split the HW division…not only would HW’s drop to 225 or so but possibly LHW’s would stay up there too…I think a division of 225ers is more practical than a new division of 195ers

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats a fair post Punch. I listed the things I liked, but you definitly pointed out some things that bothered me as well, and like you said, I can understand why some people dont like him.

I never really liked guys that were so much bigger then the competition, for example: Tim sylvia…but those big guys like Sylvia that rely on size are all pussies at heart who survive soley on size…at least Brock has killer instinct. Its intruiging to watch him unleash his power! Hw division is changing and guys are getting HUge so, its not that bad anymore. Brock is a lot bigger then Mir, but after that, he will start facing guys close to his size and thats when it will get interesting.

I also didnt like his antics at the end of the Herring fight, but realistically, I cant really hold it against him if it continues to be an iscolated incidint. if it happens again, I will be pissed, but he was coming off of a BS loss to Mir that embarressed him, and he had a ton of pressure on him, not to mention it was in front of his home crowd, and all the “real UFC” fighters including Herring bashed him….so I will forgive him for that. He was respecful when he Ko’ed Couture to win the title…I think he will show a nice mix of being respectful and just a natural bad ass!

by John G on Jun 30, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Punch, what’s your opinion of someone like GSP coming into a WW fight at about 190 pounds after his weight cut? Is it fair to say he relies very heavily on being bigger and stronger than his opponent as well? GSP certainly isn’t the only one, just making a point here.

by PW on Jun 30, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair point PW…And,like john said It was comprehensible from brock’s part to reacted the way he did after his first W with the fact that he was in is hometown!Though Punch said it well also…he have been respectful as of late…unlike F*%king MURR!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 30, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

as i said, Lesnar does more for the sport than anybody at HW and almost more than anyone in the UFC! he sells tickets and he creates alot of interest around the shizznit, so you could say that he’s giving the other boys more money!… Pushing someone in the back or laughing is cool with me i have no problem with those kinda things AT ALL and that’s b/c he’s doing it for fun, ppl need to relax and stop being so bitter, it gets the crowd fired up and it is a fight!…

by RoB on Jun 30, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

What’s good maniacs?

John,

Brocks 1st fight was against a total can. Min Soon Kim I think his name is. Not to mention Brock out-weighed the guy by like 100lbs. Herrings abilities are subjective. Its just as easy to argue he’s mediocre as it is to argue he’s a real threat.

What about Randy’s initial forray into the UFC? He fought and beat Vitor Belfort & also Maurice Smith who was the champ at the time. Both guys were at the top of the MMA food chain too.

Lyoto fought BJ, Franklin & Bonnar in his 1st 6 fights.

BJ fought Caol Uno (world ranked), Jens Pulver (Champ) & Din Thomas in his 1st 5 fights.

If we take the time to look further I’m sure we’ll find other fighters with similar records.

But this is about Lesnar, right? The guy walks around at 290 lbs roughly, cuts to 265 and weiht about 280 come fight night. That’s the ONLY reason he’s been able to dominate and Ive yet to hear an arguement to sway me from that belief. Lesnar at 250 may still win fights but he’d have to actually deal with real adversity to do so.

by Machine on Jun 30, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha, talk about disrespect what about Murrs stupid ass Ecko Unlimited commercial where he states there are only 10 guys in the WORLD that could beat him in a given night… HAHAHAHA
Don’t get me wrong, I think Murr is a good fighter and is improving but what an arrogant ass clown!
The cunt smog isn’t just talking MMA, he is saying anyone in a street fight even if they had weapons like a bat. I got a funny feeling there are plenty of martial artists out there who would eat Murr alive in the street especially if they were wielding a bow staff or nun chucks and new how to use them. Pompous ass!

I gotta take Mir in this one. He is looking to be in awesome shape and nobody can deny he has more MMA talent than Lesnar. I say Mir by KO or TKO when he catches Lesnar with a knee coming in for a takedown.

by Mahde on Jun 30, 2009 9:27 AM EDT reply actions

Murr has 2 TKOs in his career: one on a near-dead Nogueira, and the other 5 years ago on the legendary Wes Sims. His only hope is to have Il Moustache Mazzagatti tackle Lesnar and hold him while Murr puts on a choke.

by PW on Jun 30, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

i really wonder where mir’s career would have taken him if he had never been in his motorcycle accident. How long would he have remained the ufc champ and where would he have ranked as far as the great heavyweights if he had a full career and wasnt hurt in his prime?

he looks like he’s finally using his talents the right way. I’d love to see a case where he somehow gets brock on his back, similar to when mac danzig fought tommy speer. I don’t see brock being comfortable on his back and I wouldnt imagine him believing that frank would try to take him down. that would be interesting to see.

by bobby o'shea on Jun 30, 2009 9:53 AM EDT reply actions

If Mir somehow ended up on top 90 seconds would be enough for him to get the job done. I don’t see him getting top position at any stage of the fight though.

by RobH86 on Jun 30, 2009 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Forrest said it best that it’s hard to root for a guy like Lesnar, he’s never seen adversary, he’s always been so big and just runs through people.

I think he’s a bully and quite honestly bad for the sport.

I’ve never seen Mir so ripped! Mir by submission!

by Ellsie on Jun 30, 2009 10:54 AM EDT reply actions

I get so sick of this comment, so then you must hate GSP and ALves… They are both bad for the sport are you hoping they both lose then?

Yeah, Brock has never faced adversity coming from a broke family in middle of no where Webster, SD and wrestling his way from a Juco to University of Minnesota… yeah he has never had adversity. I think BJ is worse for the sport in that regard (I don’t truly believe this but making the point from your standpt.)
Mr. I grew up rich and an extremely talented but that will be enough and I will encorporate a subpar work ethic. How is that better than Brock’s intense work ethic along with his physical gifts and make no mistake that most of his gifts come from hard work otherwise you would just end up with a big guy that can move very well

by Edgecrusher71 on Jul 1, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Does Mir have the frame for a lot more muscle?

Looks like he does. The problem is “looking” buff doesn’t equate to “wrestler” strength.

Even if Mir packs on a lot of muscle, Lesnar has had a life time of wrestling strength.

I hope Mir takes it for the sake of the sport. Brock is not an MMA fighter(yet)…It is his size/strength that wins fights.

by DubNub on Jun 30, 2009 11:46 AM EDT reply actions

What exactly constitutes a true MMA fighter? A title? Brock has it. Dominating wins over notable opponents? Yep, Herring and Couture. A never-before-seen combination of speed and power? Got it. Brutal striking power and world-class wrestling ability? Check and check. The likelihood of winning a fight via triangle choke? OK, maybe not.

Brock doesn’t have the diversified package that someone like Kenny Florian has, but Brock’s only been training for about two years. Brock does, however, have a much broader MMA skill set (wrestling, GnP, stnad-up) than a lot of guys who have been around a lot longer than he has.

by PW on Jun 30, 2009 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Great post PW

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

PW-

That’s a nice post but I disagree.

A “true” MMA fighter is someone who incorporates a variety of techniques/attacks and has a hand in alot of disciplines.

I think we can all agree on this, yes?

Every MMA fighter has a dominant base ala wrestling, karate, jits, etc.

Brock is dominant in a heavy weight division filled with one dimensional fighters, not “true” MMA fighters. The only exceptions being Nog and Randy, IMO.

This is not to say that Brock will not expand his skills but at this point he is getting by on great genetics.

I agree with DubNub.

by OJR on Jun 30, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed…like the Fridge playin for the ‘85 Bears…wasn’t built like a running back, had no speed, no moves, no running back skkills what-so-ever, but still scored TD’s…that example a bit extreme but ya get my drift

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

According to your criteria OJR half the UFC roster can’t be considered “true” MMA fighters. When was the last time Chuck Liddell kimura’d someone or Demian Maia KO’d someone?? Are they not true MMA fighters?

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

K-Dog-

Chuck is a KO artist. Maia is a jits wiz.

Nothing “mixed” about that.

No, they are not “true” MMA fighters.

I know I am splitting hairs and/or coming across as elitist but that’s just the way I see it.

by OJR on Jun 30, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

with chucks wrestling base~ and the fact his kisckboxing is[was] off the hook, i would have to disagree ojr!!

chuck is definitely a mma fighter..

being a pro in one aspect is great to have in mma~ chuck has 2.. wrestling and kickboxing..

just cause chuck liked to use his wrestling to defend td’s doesnt mean its not there..

maia, yeah! he needs more all around work.. but he can get there.

by stinky~fingers on Jun 30, 2009 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I count 5 maybe 6 “true” MMA fighters on the UFC books then according to your criteria.

Would Chuck have been able to win all his fights if he didn’t have a background in wrestling to help with his TD defence, so he coud keep it standing and KO his opponents? Does that not make him a “Mixed” martial artist?

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

You beat me to it stinky

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

If Chuck had a kickboxing base, I never saw it and I have been watching MMA for a bit now. He def has dynamite in his fists.

Having a great sprawl is not indicative of an all around wrestling background.

I can avoid punches and jabs very effectively but that does not make me a boxer.

Let me ask a question :

If you know a fighter can finish you in only ONE way, does that make him a true MMA fighter or just a great fighter?

You know my answer!

by OJR on Jun 30, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re on a loser here OJR! Just coz you can only KO somebody to win and not win by flying gogoplata triangle achilles lock doesn’t make you not a true MMA fighter.

You call Randy and Nog the only true HW mma fighters. When was the last time Randy Ko’d someone or submitted someone? When was the last time Big Nog scored a win via left high kick?? Why are they “true” mma fighters and guys like Brock, Carwin and Gonzagha aren’t????

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Sanchez and Florian are probably my two favorite fighters because they can finish a fight at any time and from any position, so I really do appreciate the ‘mixed’ in mixed martial artist. I also think Lesnar is far more well-rounded and has much more skill than he gets credit for, as opposed to just being an overwhelming brute. We already know he’s an elite wrestler. Lesnar will also out-box Murr, he can ground and pound, and I’m sure he’s also worked pretty hard on sub defense. There are guys who have been training for 10 years that don’t have that aresenal.

by PW on Jun 30, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think Brock will finish a fight via sub from his back, but good luck getting him there. Standing, top position or clinch against the cage, Brock can make anyone pray for a quick death.

by PW on Jun 30, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

yall sound crazy~

chuck not a kickboxer?? haha~ back in the day thats mostly what chuck used..imo~ one of the reason chuck fell off was cause he stopped mixing it up..maybe thats why u think that..

but back in the day~ chuck would wrestle and kickbox.. he just got dominant in his tdd and relied on his hands..

chuck is[was] definitely an all around mma fighter, no doubt.. watch some ufc before event/40~

by stinky~fingers on Jun 30, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

plus~ the wand/chuck fight proved he still knows how to ‘mix it up’, and that he didn’t forget true mma..

like i said~

u NEED at least one dominate form of martial arts to have a good chance in mma! and then u train ur butt of at the rest, and work ur all around game..

chuck is[was] dominant in TWO martial arts, and knows and trains the rest.. that = a mma fighter to me…

if u think a guy who has only been subbed ONCE doesnt know jj, or when his tdd didn’t work, how fast he would get back up..

just cause chuck didn’t ‘mix it up’ late in his career, doesnt mean he isn’t an mma fighter~

by stinky~fingers on Jun 30, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I saw Chuck fight a long time ago vs. Noe Hernandez, a buddy of mine from MI. Back when the UFC was a glorified tough man competition.

That was when Chuck was a mean, lean killing machine.

That fight was all stand up from start to finish. Nothing else.

Vs. Wand? That’s weak, Stinky. He basically used that take down for points and not to implement any GnP.

I understand your argument but I don’t agree.

Chuck was a great KO artist with alot of sick power.

That’s it.

by OJR on Jun 30, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

OJR you’re crazy today! Big Nog and Randy can finish a fight from any position? So couture can finish you from his back? That’s a real long shot! Big Nog can KO you standing up? Another long shot!

Gonzagha can finish off his back and KO you standing up, ask CC! Carwin has Ko power standing up and a brutal gnp, same as Brock. They have more chance of finishing you from any position than Nog or randy IMO.

Guys who are equally as good standing or striking are extremely rare, so just to label the GSP’s and Bj’s of this world as the only “true” MMA fighters is a poor argument.

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

bottom line is that they FIGHT under MMA rules!
I could pull submissions on anybody and knock them out, being an MMA fighter means that you’re doing it proffessionally and training all aspects of it.. not how you are at it

MIR looks in great shape. He doesn’t look like he’s trying to be the same size as Lesnar, but he does look like he’s in great shape from where he was a couple fights ago. His speed will definitely be a factor

If he can fire off a few shots and also do well in the clench (see the Lesnar vs Couture fight) he can get Lesnar in a position where he will be submitted again.

Then again, the way Mir rocked Nog, I could see a KO in this fight. Lesnar seems like the type to fold quickly from some big punches.

by GreenStar on Jun 30, 2009 12:03 PM EDT reply actions

Brocks best way to win is a solid shot to Franks chin. Too bad Brock isn’t great at leg kicks..a serious kicker on Franks past injury would surely end the night. However even with all Frank’s skills, he as any man, can be ko’ed. I bet on Frank the first fight. I will be betting on Brock this one.

Mir is JACKED! as well as an overall BIG DUDE.

Extremely fine-tuned grappling skills + Solid striking game + Jack-diesel physique/athleticism = BAMF, who’s not to be counted out.

Lesnar’s a man-beast, no question about it. However, last time they were in a stare down, Lesnar really didnt look THAT much bigger.

I think this is going to be a good fight, with tables turning like a Harlem house-party.

Lamest UFC Heavyweight championship fight since Monson v. Sylvia. I’d rather watch Severn v. Shamrock 2 on loop than these fucking homos. I’d rather get drunk at Applebee’s than watch these plebs.

Yes Randy did hold his own for a short period of time, but the weight difference proved to be too much of an advantage. Maybe Frank can stay in their longer with the same style as Randy. Hopefully, Frank has worked on his take down defense because if it goes to the ground I think he’s grounded and pounded. However, if Lesnar gets sloppy on the ground Frank may submit him. Only time will tell. I’m giving it to Brock with a glimmer of hope for Muir.
