Stephan Bonnar: 'I have to win. I need to win' against Mark Coleman at UFC 100

Props: MMAFanhouse.com

Quoteworthy:

"Winning is so important. It's not just about fighting in the UFC. We get paid significantly more if we win. I have to win. I need to win.... I'm feeling better and I've learned to taper back a little bit. For example, I felt a little run down a few weeks ago, so I took a couple days off. Now, in the last two weeks of training, I'm only pushing hard once a day, while the second workout is lighter, not as intense.... I've been working on [my wrestling] a lot more. And, I kind of know he's been working his standup a lot . So I wouldn't be surprised if he traded with me for a little bit. But I expect his instincts to kick in and take me down, or try to take me down.... His biggest strength is wrestling and being on top of someone. Even with Shogun, you could see when he got him down, it was hard for Shogun to get up. It's not a good place to be."

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) sensation from season one, Stephan Bonnar, talks about the importance of winning his next fight and what he is/isn't doing in training to prepare for Mark Coleman at UFC 100 on July 11. One thing he certainly isn't doing is feeling relaxed with what some might perceive as a "lifetime pass" from UFC President Dana White to compete inside the Octagon regardless of results. "The American Psycho" has lost three of his last five fights; however, he was looking sharp after stringing back-to-back wins before locking horns with super prospect Jon Jones earlier this year. Can he get back on the winning track less than two weeks from now or will Coleman drop "The Hammer" with his trademark takedowns/ground and pound en route to a victory of his own?

Another obvious fight. UFC 100 has some very one-sided fights. GSP vs Alves is the best matchup and even that might just be a GnP clinic by GSP. I’ll be stoked to see it, but it may not be the best UFC by a long shot. Maybe the undercard will produce some nice highlights.

If you cant beat Coleman sun it really is time to turn it in! Talk about a gimmee. Weather the initial 30 second onslaught from the old warhorse, wait for the hands to drop to the knees due to fatigue then pick the old man off anyway you like!

what!?? you must be kidding?!!! haven’t you heard that Coleman could beat Machida…Bonnar will be a piece of cake! He trains with Baroni ya know! ;)

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I forgot he trains with Baroni at team cardiohouse, sorry hammerhouse, Coleman all the way then!! Next stop Machida!

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I believe he still trains at frontporchhouse…lol

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Same place as BJ then! lol

I don’t know why they don’t go to a better training facility and just head over to Jens Pulver’s Garage.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 30, 2009 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

LMAO!!! i heard he just got a little bar fridge installed for cool drinks after he finishes jumping rope

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

And a little portable fan put in, just incase they happen to break into a sweat lol

Until Coleman starts training with the wORLD Famous STABILITY Ball….He will continue to struggle! hahahahaha Dont you know, the stability ball is the secret to success? Just ask Frank littleCOCK, shamrock, whatever that loser’s name is!

Coleman is a tough old guy that needs money. Hate to see him fight only because if he didnt need the money he wouldnt be in there.

by Cantrim on Jun 30, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

good point till you think about what else could Coleman actually do…

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Funny comments, Coleman’s cardio was laughable at 93, chances are it will be just as bad at 100, unless he used his undeserved FOTN money from that show on a new camp. Bonnar has this one in the bag, if he is mentally and physically ready, he looked pretty deflated after the Bones Jones defeat so I’m hoping that fight didn’t kill his confidence.

True but the guy he fought is now fighting for a title with a little luck it could have been him.

by Mike on Jun 30, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

All the four leafed clovers in the world, even the ones borrowed off that great Irishman marcus davis, wouldn’t have given coleman enough luck to get a title shot.

coleman…jeezzz..

by mikeybear on Jun 30, 2009 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I feel like Colemans worried old mother every time I see him in the ring.

“Don’t get hurt Mark!!”

by DirtyML on Jun 30, 2009 10:06 AM EDT reply actions

i just feel bad cause the guy brings his kids to the fight and at his age there’s no telling what could happen

by McArthur on Jun 30, 2009 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

When you think about it; this guy is 42 years old; he’s obviously not got the money or experience to retire or support his family doing anything else. It kind of makes you want to root for Coleman, this guy was big when no one was making any money; he declined as the sport grew and now that they’re pulling in better $$$ for the fighters he’s over the hill. He’s got his two daughters and a wife that he’s fighting to support. I like Bonnar but I hope for Colemans kids sake, that he can pull this one out.

These comments are 2funny…im not gunna lie, if Shogun was in better shape when he fought Mark in ufc….he would’ve had his head kicked clean off…hands at the knees…not a good look Mark!

by Silva_Rampage on Jun 30, 2009 10:33 AM EDT reply actions

Why was dana so worried about liddell’s health that he retired the guy but keeps putting Coleman out there to get hammered. Aren’t they BOTH UFC legends?

by suckit on Jun 30, 2009 10:49 AM EDT reply actions

Exactly! He knows chuck’s past it now but still a massive draw and would make another promoter very rich, but coleman wouldn’t!

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Coleman hasn’t gone night-night in 3 of his last 5 fights.

by PW on Jun 30, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Coleman also isn’t as wealthy as chuck is. ( assumption on my part, but accurate I’m sure)

by James S on Jun 30, 2009 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Debatable whether chuck is richer, he has a tendency to ahem “blow” his money.

by attakdog on Jun 30, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

lol excellent wording attakdog

by James S on Jun 30, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I heard he sometimes “strippers” his money too.

by PW on Jun 30, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Dana retires the guy and gives a shot at the title to the guy who beat him doesn’t really make sense.

by Mike on Jun 30, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Dont worry mate, I think you’ll get your win here.

He probibly will. I really would like to see Coleman do good in the ufc again, but i just dont see that happening. Put Mark in there with Houston Alexander!! Easy win.

I think the UFC should pull a WWE and have chuck fight coleman loser has to retire… tho saying that in the WWE they will back in 6 months

by CoN'r on Jun 30, 2009 6:41 PM EDT reply actions

I have to go Bonnar all the way. Before his injury he was kicking ass and now he is all healed up and ready to kick ass again. I know that look in his eyes very well and he is not going to lose…He was born to do this and has kind of been training for it all his life. Lets get it done cuz!!
