I am a much bigger Nog fan, then i am of Randy, but I have to admit that Randy was the real UFC champion…so in my
(Biased against Mir) eyes Brock is the real champion. Normally I wouldnt care, because they both beat Legends to win the belt…fair is fair, but when they are going head to head, we have to consider Brock the real champion, especially since you take into account that he is the favorite…but whatever. Stupid debate anyway!
well I honestly dont care what mir is doing although I hear he does have a good team around him. This is the 1 post where I am not going to bash him. But I will give my serious assessment that I truly dont believe he is a top 10 Heavyweight, and I honestly dont expect for him to ever be in position to fight for a title again. I bash guys like Forrest and Randy on a daily basis, but I know and admit that they are top fighters who are a tough match up for just about anyone in the world…but Mir, I truly dont think he is good enough to where he should be fighting for a UFC title. I honestly dont. THats not to bash him, there are hundreds of good fighters that will probably never fight for a title. I think he has a fabulous guard and really good ju jitsu, but nothing special in any other aspetc of the game. He has always had close to BOb sapp like cardio problems. HIs cardio might have improved. I seriously hope so, its the least he could do, wearing UFC gold around your waiste. At least show up in world class athletic shape, after all that what UFC fighters are supposed to be. I dont think its too much to ask that someone fighting in a title fight, show up in top form. Some say, that some guys will never be cardio machines, no matter how hard they work. I dont know if thats true..hopefully someone on this site can clarify that for me.
I dont mean to diminish his ground game, but I dont see Mir out jitsing a guy like Werdum, GOnzaga, or Big nog and thats OK, not a lot of people can and even if he cant, his jits will always be top shelf, I will NEVER take that away from him. The most disappointing part of the Nog fight to me, was that we never got to see those guys grapple. Mir has never competed in ADCC, nor has he ever really been in a ground war against another good jits guy with serious world class credentials…so I have a hard time figuring out how good he actually is on the ground.
I would like to see Mir fight GOnzaga because he would be forced to make it into a grappling match. Mir might think that he has this new improved stand up, and it probably has improved, but from what I see its still really basic and he hates getting hit…so I think he would be petrified of striking with gonzaga (and I wouldnt blame Mir if he was), so he would probably close the difference fast and make it a grappling match up…and thats what I want to see. I want to see how Mir’s ground game matches up with a BJJ Black belt with serious credentials. For all I know, he could school GOnzaga on the ground. I dont think so, but my point is we really dont know with Mir because he has never grappled anyone with credentials in his entire UFC career.
I bash Mir all the time, and it pissed many of you guys off, and I continue to do it for fun, but not TODAY. THis post was not meant to bash Mir at all. Its just my honest assessment of him as a fighter and me stating what questions I would like to see answered about Mir, in future fights.
this is what I think of the individual aspects of his game:
stand up: Average, still kind of basic. Doesnt like getting hit standing up. He can take punches while on the ground to pull off a submission, I will def give him credit for that. tO me it seems like he is afraid to get hit standing, but is willing to deal with being punched if it can lead to a submission. I dont think he will ever outstrike a top 10 uFC heavyweight ever again in his life. For those that think I bash him, please let me know what top hw, YOU GUYS COULD SEE MIR OUTSTRIKING?
Clinch: Average, you wont see many fighters gameplanning for Mir’s clinch game
Wrestling: Average. Cant stuff to many takedowns, but he has been effective in getting opponents to the ground, weather its using wrestling, jits trips, pulling gurad, or just dragging his opponents to the ground, he has been able to get his fights to the ground and I will give him credit for that. But when you think Mir, you definietly dont think…wrestler!
Cardio: Like I said, I really dont want to bash him, but If I am being honest, I have to say that he has shown below average Cardio throughout his UFC career. I mean, he will look like its the end of a 5 round war, and then you look at the clock, and its midway through the second round. THat is unacceptable. I will be fair, and say that Maybe his cardio has improved. Point is, since the hardonk fight, his fights havent gone past the 2nd round, so for all I know, maybe his cardio has improved…but FROM what I have seen in the past, I think its fair to say that he shown below average cardio
I tried to make this as much of an honest assessment as I possibly could, so I am curious to hear what you guys agreed with or didnt agree with about this post!

Agreed; Randy is top notch and can give anyone a run for their money.

LOL, I was just waiting for your response on that one; I take my Randy jabs at u where I can get them. ;)
As for Mir, I’d have to agree, Average striking, above average jits, average wrestling, below average cardio. I can’t say much about the Clinch, it’s not a position I’ve seen him in much. But that makes for a pretty well rounded fighter. See, IMO, the reason Mir is so successful is because he’s a HW with good Jits; seems like when you go up a division in weight the jits talent thins out a little bit in each division. You look at Mir’s past fights, and just like you said; you won’t find an opponent with great ground credentials. Side note: That arm lock he had on Pete Williams (I don’t even know what to call that)… sick..
AND an indicator of his faith in his ground game should be the Nog fight; you could tell that the gameplan was to have NOTHING to do with Nog’s jits. I don’t blame him at all; perfect gameplan and it worked. Realistically though, if you look at the UFC HW division as it stands right now, you gotta rank Mir top 5-10. There might be a lot of guys you’d favour over Mir in a fight, but imo not one of them could be viewed as a complete lock to destroy Mir.
So While I don’t think he’s going to hold the belt for very long if he does beat Brock; I also can’t say he’s unable to compete and win against top HW competition.

John,
I’m thinking about dropping half my roll on Brock if the odds get a little closer. How about you?
And I like Mir, but that should make it clear how I feel about this from a logical perspective. I read your book :) above and I don’t think you’ll get a ton of response b/c there’s not much to disagree with.

They should´ve make a 3 show Prime Time countodown show. I mean if the Crybaby got one, shouldn´t UFC 100 got their own?

Yeah I can’t believe they are going to cram all these big match-ups into a one hour show.

anyone else notice that Alves has a big HGH head? I’m sure he’s taken roids.
That being said he poses a great matchup for GSP, that fight should be fight of the night, and I’m hesitant to take GSP because of his questionable chin.
GSP wins this fight with his wrestling & ground and pound, not his kickboxing.
by Scott White on Jun 29, 2009 3:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What questionable chin? He got hit behind the head in the Matt Serra fight just like Randy vs Brock.
Alves looks like a typical Brazilian to me and I don’t think he uses Steroids.
Man, this Card is going to be EPIC!!!!!!

Damn I wish I was born in Brazil if your typical Brazilian looks like that.

I think Alves already got popped once for illegal steroid-masking diuretics and failed badly to make weight against Hughes when his little injectable helpers weren’t available.
by PW on Jun 29, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, he uses diuretics to make weight so you can’t say that he dosen’t use steroids. If he would take one illegal drug, you can’t put it past him to use another.
by Rich on Jul 6, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hgh and roids are two dif things. Roids don’t make your head bigger and hgh makes EVERYTHING bigger! I’m not going to sat he has or hasnt, but it sure looks like he did/does. It’s def not as obvious as Lesnar! LOL
by BOW on Jun 29, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
HGH doesn’t cause any abnormal bone growth.. You can’t get that kind of frame from taking HGH.

in regards to Lesnar anyway
by O damn he got caught on Jun 29, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, HGH can cause acromegaly- an abnormal growth of the facial bones; protruding forehead and jaw. I teach college Anatomy and Physiology and am a collegiate strength and conditioning coach so I know this as factual information.

Everyone can get hurt at any time. He has only been rocked once in his entire career. But I think he is more cautious now than he used to be since the Serra fight. Before that he used to strike a lot more. Now, he utilizes his wrestling more than his striking. I think he is going to surprise Alves with his striking this fight though. One thing about GSP, he takes another fighters strengths and proves he is better than they are. Besides, Alves has been stopped more than GSP by far lesser fighters. If you want to look at past fights.
Myself, I don’t think that what happened in the past is all that important in either fighters’ case.
