UFC 103: Mike Swick vs Martin Kampmann in the works for Sept. 19

Former top middleweight contenders and current UFC welterweight standouts Mike Swick (14-2) and Martin Kampmann (15-2) are in talks to hook 'em up in a fantastic 170-pound showdown at UFC 103 in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19, according to sources close to both camps.

Swick has pushed his undefeated mark in the welterweight division to 4-0 after a "quick" technical knockout of Ben Saunders at UFC 99: "The Comeback" on June 13.

It was the second straight stoppage for the American Kickboxing Academy product and a strong argument for his place among the next in line for the 170-pound strap.

Perhaps a win over Kampmann in front of a friendly hometown crown may be the final stepping stone.

"The Hitman" last competed at UFC Fight Night 18: "Condit vs. Kampmann," spoiling the Octagon debut of World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) Welterweight Champion and top-ranked 170-pound fighter Carlos Condit. He defeated Alexandre Barros via second round technical knockout at UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson" in his 170-pound debut earlier this year.

Prior to the back-to-back wins, Kampmann had his nine-fight win streak snapped after getting wrecked by Nate Marquardt in short order via bruising first round technical knockout at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" back in September 2008. It was apparently a wake up call for the Danish kickboxer that perhaps he is better suited to compete in a division 15 pounds lighter.

This will marked the third time that Kampmann competes at 170 pounds. And if he is able to perform well like he did on April 1, he could be facing even more top competition in the category sooner rather than later.

cant wait for this. martin by: because he’s better.
he’s like that cop on terminator, you just cant hurt him.

by day1er on Jun 29, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

He is better on the ground i’ll give you that. But Swick is better on the feet.

Martin will need to get this to the ground but it won’t be easy as Swick is training with 2 of the best wrestlers in the UFC in KOS and Fitch. He’ll have good TD.

either way i can’t wait!

by SoCalStunNa on Jun 29, 2009 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Can’t hurt him?

Marquardt DESTROYED him.

by Blackbeard on Jun 29, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

swick aint no marquardt. dont bring that weak stuff around here. j/k bro. i dont see swick able to hurt kampmann. i dont see him outstriking him or beating him on the ground. swick wanted a challenge and now he has one.

by day1er on Jun 29, 2009 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

This is shaping up very nicely. This is going to be a great fight.

by DSmith on Jun 29, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Kampmann’s wrestling sucks and his ground isn’t good enough to sub swick. Mike is gonna go in his guard and “swick” out for the judges’ nod. Though kampmann is more technical standing, swick takes by aggression, speed, reach and power. So in the standup, i see marting getting marked up a bit. Either ways, swick wins everywhere here.

by NameNotRequired on Jun 29, 2009 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Martin will Crush Swick, I have said it before. I would have gave Swick an advantage when they both fought at 185, but I give Kampmann all the advantage at 170 where he has a better build for the weight class, swick is skinny at 170 and Kampmann still has power. I know Swick knocked out that glass jawed canadian and The smiling bobble head guy, but he will not be as fortunate when Martin grinds him out for 3 rds…

by JRE on Jun 29, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree nnr~ i dont think swick is going to stand and bang like most want..

i feel swick is going to shoot right away~ and try to win on the ground..

but i do hope they decide to stand and trade~

should be a good fight~

by stinky~fingers on Jun 30, 2009 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

JRE, I wasnt even thinking about the Saunders fight when I said Swick would (T)KO him. All Im saying is dont sleep on Swick, the guy was very good at MW. Now that hes adjusted to the weight at WW, hes a big threat to anybody! Kampmann fights to Swick’s strenghts so thats why I thought KO. I know Kampmann is legit! But people are really overlooking Swick. Thats all homie, just my humble opinion.

by JV on Jun 30, 2009 6:45 AM EDT up reply actions

man this will be a fight

kampmann is 1 of my favourite fighters but swick is a beast

i see this being a back and forth match up but i think swick takes this

by ufcaddict on Jun 30, 2009 8:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Neither fighter will get destroyted in this fight! THis is going to be a very close and hard fought fight that will end in thehands of the judges. Judging has been really crappy as of late, and I think that this will be such a close fight….that i this site dabtingt he judges decision on this match up for weeks following this fight.

I would strongly advise both of these fighters to do everything in their power to try and finish this fight because its going to be so close, that one of these two fighters isnt going to agree with the judges decision.

not really much of a swick fan, Im not crazy over Kampman either, but i will admit that they are both top WW, and stylistically, this should be a great fight. If either fighter becomes a +150 underdog or more…I will lay a smallamount of money on the DOG…If the odds are close to even, I wont even bet this fight because I think they are so close in skill that if they fought 10 times, they would probably split and get 5 wins each…so It just a matter of who is better on THAT NIGHT.

by John G on Jun 30, 2009 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

johnG~ exactly how i see it player~

depending on odds? i will be betting the dog~

great match up

by Randy for Couture on Jun 30, 2009 7:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Winner deserves a title shot, especially if its Swick, that would be his 4th straight win @ WW.

by Ed C on Jun 30, 2009 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Tough fight to call. I can see Swick knocking him out or maybe Kampman submitting him. I think if this fight goes the distance it favors Kampman as well. Not sure who to pick, but I’m leaning toward Kampman. I’ll definatley be rooting for him any way.

by DB on Jun 29, 2009 8:19 PM EDT reply actions

Swick is going to win this one, easily.

by JonnyBoy on Jun 29, 2009 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Not easily, boy, not easily…

by SoCalStunNa on Jun 29, 2009 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

martin for the win!!

by JIZZO on Jun 29, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I really want to see Martin win this fight, but this will be a tough one for him. He better train hard cause Swick always does.

by belfort_fan on Jun 29, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

This should be a good fight. I know they will both want to bang, but doesn’t Kampmann have the advantage on the ground? I know Swick has a good camp with a lot of guys with great ground games, but I don’t think Swick has a great ground game. I’m a Swick fan and hope he wins. But this should be a War.

by BeerMan on Jun 29, 2009 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

Cant wait for this fight. This has FOTN written all over it.

by allamerican on Jun 29, 2009 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

i’m wondering how many times Goldy will say the same thing!

by SoCalStunNa on Jun 29, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

this fight is such a joke lol. kampmann by murder.

by lefthook187 on Jun 29, 2009 8:52 PM EDT reply actions

I am kind of upset about this match up and excited at the same time just because I love watching these guys fight but don’t wanna see one of them lose. But I see Kampmann as an underdog but not by a large margin.

I hate having to decide on one person but I think I will take Swick by UD.

by Jon on Jun 29, 2009 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

Eazy win for Kampmann. Swick should have lost to Burkman.

by RonnyRAGE on Jun 29, 2009 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

That was Swick’s first fight at 170lbs and his first time ever cutting weight. The weight cut was very tough for him for that Burkman fight. He is a much different “170lbs fightter” now. In my opinion, not a fair conclusion to draw.

by KPC on Jun 30, 2009 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I see a decision. Toss-up fight

by John on Jun 29, 2009 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

fight is signed but both guys deserve a title shot
winner takes it!!!

by bryant on Jun 29, 2009 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

idk whos gonna win but im sure that both guys got there work cut out for eachother, but they both got the top comp that they deserved..

by guyverbob on Jun 29, 2009 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

hate to say it, but i give a slight edge to swick. i think he takes it by decision

by warwagonmma on Jun 30, 2009 12:54 AM EDT reply actions

This is going to be a sick fight! So evenly matched!

by mmafreak100 on Jun 30, 2009 6:25 AM EDT reply actions

kampman by sub/tko

by markg on Jun 30, 2009 6:39 AM EDT reply actions

Does everyone think this is a #1 contender match up? I mean GSP would smoke either of these 2 guys but realistically who else is out there?

by WB on Jun 30, 2009 8:58 AM EDT reply actions

Swick by Swickotine…or whatever the hell he alls it. Kampmanns one mistake will cost him. I want to see him fight Condit again

by Christafo on Jun 30, 2009 12:05 PM EDT reply actions

i wonder if anybody saw Swicks last fight? A lot of people thought Ben Saunders couldnt get hurt and look what happened to him…

by ChanceIt on Jun 30, 2009 12:46 PM EDT reply actions

Swick by UD and im definitely not ruling out a 3rd ko

by ChanceIt on Jun 30, 2009 12:47 PM EDT reply actions
