Tom Atencio: Dana White is wrong to criticize anybody that steps in the cage

Props: MMAWeekly

Quoteworthy:

"I’m gonna figure out where to go from here. I love this sport, but I hate this feeling. I feel like a Mack Truck hit me. My whole body hurts. It’s hard to walk or do anything. But I just love it. It was a war. And there’s nothing better than knowing (Randy Hedderick) was beating my ass and I came back from a virtual loss. I think (for Dana White) to say that he was a 'nobody' and a 'nothing' is presumptuous, one, and two, I always say I have a lot of respect for anybody that steps in the cage. I don’t care if you’ve lost every single fight. At least you’re the one doing it. For somebody to criticize that, I just think it’s wrong."

Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio blasts UFC President Dana White following his June 27 TKO victory over Randy Hedderick at "Ultimate Chaos" from the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss. The 42-year-old "T-Shirt Guy" takes White to task for criticizing Hedderick as a patsy that may have been hand picked for Atencio to walk through. Atencio maintains that Hedderick deserves respect for having the guts to step into the cage — something Dana White refused to do even after Atencio publicly called him out. Is Dana a scab for not getting in the cage? Or does Atencio miss the mark in that Dana is right where he needs to be -- running the UFC empire on a day-to-day basis? What say you?

I’m not much of a affliction fan, but gotta give Tom Atencio his do. The guy showed incredible heart. Dana wouldnt of made it past the 1st round.

I agree with Atencio. I feel the exact same way. When he said:

“I don’t care if you’ve lost every single fight. At least you’re the one doing it. For somebody to criticize that, I just think it’s wrong”

He said it perfectly.

I respect him more because he really is a true fan of the sport. The UFC is the premier promoter and my favorite by far, but Dana should at least respect Atencio’s ambition.

Atencio’s fight helped Affliction, it certainly gained some extra attention. What Affliction really needs is a Reality show with a different format from UFC. Dana is also right, Atencio should be focusing on building the company from here on out.

by DAVE A on Jun 29, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Atencio fought well and he deserves credit. I don’t know if Dana trains in MMA, but he is certainly bigger and stonger than Atencio, not to mention probably a better boxer. Nevertheless, Dana has nothing to gain and everything to lose by fighting Atencio. So, if he is smart, he won’t fight him, even though he would probably win.

U think Dana wud beat Tom because he has “better” boxing.

Good for Tom for going out and doing what he wanted to do. He’s right about fighters just stepping into the cage thing.

On the other hand, I don’t disrespect Dana for not stepping into the cage with Tom or anyone else for that matter. Does Dana really have to accept any challenge thrown his way? No. Did you scrap with every guy that wanted to go at it in high school? No, you didn’t.

Some people have better things to do, in Dana’s case its running a huge promotion.

UFC champ is right, plus how come every time Tom gets his name in print he has to talk about Dana? Shouldn’t he be promoting his own organization? Instead of talking about your man crush on Dana worry about your failing business.

it takes 2 to tango

by McArthur on Jun 29, 2009 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

its the other way around Jay. Dana should keep tOm’s name out of his mouth. UFC is the top dog….Dana is basically the king of mma, he is the one that has no business bad mouthing Atencio every time someone sticks a microphone in his mouth..why bother? when you are the top dog like Dana is, up and coming people are always going to try and make a name off of you….If I were Dana, I wouldnt even acknowledge Affliction’s existence, at least not Publicly.

Its like when a young up and coming fighter tries to make his name off of an existing star. If the up and coming fighter is completely beneath the established fighter, its up to the established fighter to ignore it!

I do completely agree that Dana has no business bashing any man that is willing to get into the ring and test themselves against another human being. I watched Atencio’s fight out of curiosity, and I actually walked away from that fight entertained. Not only was it an exciting fight, but TOm put on a gutsy performance. Do u guys realize what an accomplishment that was? Forget for a second that Tom was fighting a no name guy….Tom is a 42 year old man, that rarely fights. Its not the same as being a 40 something year old couture who is a freak of an athlete and been training and competing for DECADES…atencio does this once in a while, just for fun….which makes what he accomplished this past saturday pretty damn impressive if you ask me!

by JOhn G on Jun 29, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought that Dana was only responding once in a while because people were asking him questions about Tom. He can’t just say next question. But everything I see about Affliction it has something in it about UFC or Dana. It’s all moot really because Tom and Affliction have one more month until they go away for good.

by jay on Jun 29, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John Dana doesn’t bring up Tom hardly ever! People ask about him, and he responds. Tom is the one who can’t keep thinking about Dana.

If Dana was so obsessed with Atencio, then there would have been numerous quotes out there about Dana commenting on Atencio’s fight. Dana just plain doesn’t give a sh!t.

by Syn on Jun 29, 2009 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They should BOTH STFU.

by OJR on Jun 29, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Full credit to Atencio for winning this fight, like Lester on TUF he won through pure grit and determination rather than skill. Whilst his opponent was sat on the stool realising that he didn’t want to fight after all Atencio was ready for R3 despite nearly being KO’d a couple of times in R1. Nobody can bash Atencio’s heart and he proved that he has the right mentality to fight for a living. For a 42 year old man to do what he did is impressive.

However, Dana shouldn’t have to fight to prove his worth, he’s already the most successful MMA promoter of all time so why would he decide to fight. Atencio did well, even if his skill set is limited and his opponent was poor, but a fight with Dana would be ridiculous. Here Atencio is looking desperate, randomly throwing out Dana’s name in a bid to create some controversy and get more people talking. Fighting doesn’t make your opinions on MMA more or less valid and certainly can’t be used to criticise a successful promoter in the sport.

People bash Lesnar and Lashley for being former WWE wrestlers but a promoter v promoter fight would bring far more shame than having a couple of excellent amateur wrestlers with a pro wrestling background be successful in the sport.

by David W-S on Jun 29, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Atencio was responding to Dana White’s comments bashing Atencio and his opponent. If you’re not willing to step in the cage then you shouldn’t be knocking the fighters that do. And yes Jay, you can very easily say “Next question”, people do it all the time in interviews. I tend to agree with John G on this one. If you’re the top dog you don’t even need this crap. Jay-Z doesn’t even respond to rappers that diss him anymore because he said he’s got everything he wants, and he’s not going to give some young guys a name off destroying them in a rap battle. If you’re the best, and everyone knows it, no one is going to think you’re scared if you just say you’re not going to talk about someone(i.e. Dana could easily say he’s not going to talk about Atencio or Affliction and that would be the end of it).

by Diceman on Jun 29, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Diceman is right. If I were Dana and people would bring up another company or promoter….I would HONESTLY SAY: “NO Comment”. WhY give a young gun a chance to make their name off of you? THats the oldest strategy in the book…call out the big dog and cause some noise. Anytime Dana and Atencio bicker back in forth….Its a win for Atencio. If Dana were smart he would STFU and realize that, and NO COMMENT all affliction related questions.

by JOhn G on Jun 29, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Does anyone else think it is pathetic that this clown can’t go 10 seconds in any interview without brining up Dana White? He is so obssessed with him, it is ridiculous! Stop worrying so much what Dana is doing and worry about your business that may fold soon!

by ---Caesar--- on Jun 29, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it’s pathetic that Dana White keeps mentioning him.

by KS on Jun 29, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve never heard Dana mention him in my life unless he is asked about him

by ---Caesar--- on Jun 29, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And you think Atencio isn’t ever asked about Dana? So you think it’s always that Dana is just poked and prodded about Atencio until he snaps and says something, but everytime Atencio says something about Dana he calls his own press conference to do it? Give me a break.

by Diceman on Jun 29, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dana is a fan of the UFC making the UFC grow, if he was a genuine fan of the sport he would cross promote and give the fans a chance to see matchups against other orgs. We all know the UFC doesn’t need to do this, but if he was a genuine fan of the sport, that wouldn’t matter.

by Ade on Jun 29, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Like he did with Pride and Wandy, only for Wandy to be pulled out??

If he wasnt a fan of the sport he would be all for Anderson vs Jones. But he isnt.

You can tell by his actions that he is a fan of the sport, and doesnt want it to get hurt, anyone that thinks otherwise is an idiot.

by WP on Jun 29, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is a fan of himself and of the UFC. If you think that him being the president of the biggest MMA promotion in the world and acting like a pissed off teenager in all of his interviews doesn’t hurt the sport you are an idiot. The sport is still fighting to get sanctioned in some states, and he runs around using anti-gay slurs and dropping the F-bomb every other word. Yeah, great way to promote an already “controversial” sport. And you know damn well if any other company picked up a former WWE fighter and had him fighting for a championship after a couple fights Dana would go off about how bad it is for the sport, and half the sheep that swing from his nuts would agree.

by Diceman on Jun 29, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i dont know about that.. for all we know dana could be the best fighter in the world.. not saying he is, he could be the worst one as well. well prob never know so to speculate is kinda pointless.. one thing i agree with fully is that nobody has the right to criticize somebody who has the balls to get out there and do anything, not just mma. i think the t-shirt guy honestly feels alive when he goes out there thats y he does it. and i also think if he n d.w. were to fight i think he would do it even if it were open weight..

by hex on Jun 29, 2009 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw the fight and sue me for not paying attention but what weight was this at? Dana would probably come in at 205 if they fought, seems like he might be took big for Attencio. There’s really no reason for him to do it anyway; he’s never said he was a fighter; never claimed to be a fighter. And at this point with some of these other MMA org’s coming up and actually sticking around; co promoting anything (even if it is a fight between to guys who have no bearing on any division) with any other organization involved is just bad business for the UFC.

Damn, so they got a LW fighter, to fight against Tom at 160 in his MMA debut?? I know it can’t be Atencio thats giving up the size, cause that guy looked to be the smaller fighter. Talk about playing it safe…

by O damn he got caught on Jun 29, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At 42 years of age and not being a full time MMA fighter, Atencio was NOT playing it safe.

by OJR on Jun 29, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The guy he fought was a 4-3 amateur and was making his pro debut.

by Syn on Jun 29, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So? 42 years old is 42 years old. And he doesn’t train full time, either.

The reason Randy is so loved is because he has become one of the few exceptions to that rule.

So let’s jump off the DW train and give Atencio his due.

That being said, its obvious he is calling DW out to get attention for his company.

Tom Atencio is a retard. The fight was just a publicity stunt to try and show that he is more “into” the sport than Dana, that he’s not afraid to get dirty, and that he is more committed. Personally, I don’t give a crap about whether or not these guys can fight. I want to see good fights and the UFC takes care of that. Why should Dana waste his time training to fight some goofball when he can be working on putting more great fights together. Atencio should take note…or go away.

by Yep on Jun 29, 2009 10:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

…what does what your saying have anything to do with the fact that one guy wants to fight and one guy wants to run an org??? You get to see your good fights and Tom gets to be in one.

u want to see good fights?~ well the atencio fight was entertaining..

no way was it set up for a ‘publicity stunt’.. hedderick almost put him away in the first..

he was hungry for a knock out, and i believe he knocked tom down twice..

good fight with a lackluster ending..hedderick quit on the stool end of 2nd..

I think if you fight for a living breaking your nose, hand and losing a couple teeth are inevitable. Can’t really insult the guy; I don’t know what it feels like to break a bone in the middle of a fight and keep trying to fight.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 29, 2009 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You can see how busy Dana is on a day today basis, just on his blogs. Yes, they are a week before an event, but you get the idea. The UFC is just 10 times as busy as any other organization. Dana just couldn’t train for a fight while running things. Plus, if he did, it could all be for not if something happened – training, scheduling, or pull a Tito.

by JTK5 on Jun 29, 2009 10:07 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

off topic but just read a jon jones article.this guy said at the moment hes running at about 15% of his full potential.wow!im not jumping the gun here and dont wanna get flamed but ive never been this excited about a potential superstar before.if he keeps improving and gets some championship rounds cardio(he looked gassed at he end of the bonnar fight)he could be the only fighter whose style could give machida problems.if he runs through obrien i say put him in with banha or the polish experiment.

ill calm you down abit. in every interview with a trainer or coach or friend of a fighter they always say crazy stuff like that. JJ has looked solid.. but lets not rush the poor guy in a L yet.

by eightyproof on Jun 29, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agree 100%, if you do not fight, you cannot be critical of those that do, period. Dana should man up or shut up. it does not matter the age or the skill, as 1% of fighters are pro , the other 99% are people who face the fear of hand to hand combat.i am one who has and that is the victory, realizing that the fear/doubt is a mind thing and evaporates with the first good shot to the nogan is huge, so , if you do not do battle, shut the fuck up with the disrespect of those that do,

by daz on Jun 29, 2009 10:16 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

its not about dana having to ‘man up’.. he would never do this because it involves cross promoting, or atencio just using danas name to plug his promotion..

its all buisness..

u dont hear dana going out trying to hook up all these cross promo fights,~ he doesnt need affliction to prosper, but affliction needs the ufc..

and thats why tom atencio will do anything to leach of the ufc…even if it means getting beat down by dana~ he would do it..

by stinky~fingers on Jun 29, 2009 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gotta agree with you Stink; notice no one’s asked Dana or gotten a comment from Dana regarding the fight or the comments afterward. He may give the issue a few minutes of attention if any at all; but thats about it.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 29, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he only talks on the “issues” when the media is asking the questions..

but like u said its only brief~

i thought the t-shirt guy was done in the first round..he took some punishment for sure..

i was suprised with the mans heart and focus..he bounced back and whooped dood in the 2nd round..

i actually really enjoyed this fight~ aside from the lackluster ending~

atencio is alright in my books~ as long as he keeps danas name out him mouth, he doesn’t seem that bad of a dood~

lets face it’ dana would probably beat him down..this fight will never happen, and its actually funny that tom atencio will do anything to get his brand plugged through a ufc show..

if the t-shirt guy spent less time talking about the ufc, he could focus 100% on his promotion.. but no, its always ‘dana this and dana that’..

i loved in his post fight interview he was like “screw u dana, screw u”

it was kind of funny..

either way i respct the man for the show he put on this weekend, and all the affliction cards to date[i enjoyed both]

~thanks jesse.

I don’t really care for the politics attached, but the fight was pretty competitive. A decent MMA bout. I have seen far worse. I enjoyed the back and forth scrapping. I wasn’t quite sure why Randy Hedderick didn’t answer the bell for round three. The announcers never mentioned the reason. A broken nose perhaps?

In any case, I’m sure Dana White will point out this solidifies his contention Randy Hedderick is not a real MMA fighter. This logic will include BJ Penn’s inability to answer the bell for round 5 in a Welter-Weight title fight against GSP. BJ Penn is not a real MMA fight either. He’s Hawaiian. Probably a silver spoon-fed surfer dude instead of a casino employee.

Dana is just pissed because Tom’s fight was better than most of the fights that the UFC put together this year. Tom showed lots of skill, more than Dana ever showes. UFC is marketing machine that can care less about their fighters. When they start to wind down, Dana talks s*** about them, throwes out a bunch of sware words, then cuts them loose. He is a prick, that is what he is good at.
