Kenny Florian: Diego Sanchez should be careful what he wishes for

Props: BostonHerald.com
Quoteworthy:
"That’s a [rematch] I’ve wanted for a long time now. (Sanchez) should definitely be careful what he wishes for. If he thinks the same thing is going to happen, or I’m the same fighter at the same experience level, he’s going to be in for a surprise. I think he’s going to be saying, ’Yes, yes, yes’ on the way into the ring and, ’No, no, no’ on the way out of the ring if he faces me. It’s a completely different time and I’m a completely different fighter. I definitely don’t think he’s evolved as much as I have, that’s for sure. He’s fought at 155 twice already and he has yet to finish any opponent. He’s seen what I’ve done in the weight class and the fighters that I’ve fought and I think he realizes that, although he won the show, I’ve done bigger things in my weight division than he did at 170."
Number one lightweight contender Kenny Florian responds to statements made by Diego Sanchez following his split decision win over Clay Guida at the June 20 TUF 9 Finale. "Nightmare" thinks it is he, not the man he 'walked through' more than four years ago, who is next in line for the 155-pound strap. Aside from the loss to Sanchez in his UFC debut, Florian dropped a blood-soaked unanimous decision to Sean Sherk for the then vacant division title at UFC 64: "Unstoppable" back in October 2006. He has not tasted defeat since, winning six straight against many of the best the class had to offer and going 9-1 overall during that span. If he manages to get past BJ Penn at UFC 101 on August 8 in Philadelphia, we could see them finally determine which TUF-guy has evolved the most. Thoughts?

Would be an awesome match, Kenny wouldn’t finish Diego, or win for that matter….

wow im suprised all you guys are giving diego so much credit… like kenny said hes had 2 fights at 155 and didnt finish either opponent… correct me if im wrong but kenny has finished all of his except huerta and sherk… id say hes definitely done pretty well… pretty close fight but i think florian is too smart for diego and will punish him

kenny sounds WAY 2 confident for gettin his ass WHOOPED by diego already…hopfully kenny just shuts his mouth once bj beats him

diego would win this fight… just because he hasnt finished a fight at 155! doesnt mean anything
he had a boxing match with joe daddy and he has a solid chin and then guida who also has a great chin and has never been knocked out…. the way i see it he has won 2 decisive matches to become number 1 contender (guida should definitely not of been a split decision)
anyway i think you’ve gotta give him time at 155…. i predict him winning by ko/tko very soon at 155

Dang right! And he always says that he finishes opponents, but this time, he’s gonna have a nightmare ‘coz Diego’s psycho!!

finishing opponents or not does not make a difference, a win is a win and everybody has different styles…
If Kenny tries to fight Diego he’s going to lose for sure, he’ll have to stick and move for 15 min which he won’t be able to do, Diego’s just too good too strong!
by RoB on Jun 28, 2009 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions
or wait a sec, did i just say 15 min i meant 25 min cause Kenny’s the titleholder and that is even better for Diego…

Rob you gotta be kidding. Your looking past BJ? i hope you don’t have money on Kenny cause BJ is NOT letting Kenny take it from him. Its funny how you think because BJ lost to GSP whos just plain bigger and stronger that he’s gonna lose to someone like Kenny. Have you been under a rock? BJ is still the light weight champ for a reason. He is the best light weight on the planet period….

i dunno but if i ever got a beat down like diego gave kenny i wouldnt be sayin what kenny is saying,,,,he is wayu to cocky for getting destroyed by diego already….diego has only ever lost because the other guys were bigger
by JG on Jun 28, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Kenny’s almost a completely different fighter. I’m not saying he would necessarily beat Diego but his points are valid. He’s cocky because he’s a changed fighter. Totally different.
by Kobajack on Jun 28, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions
kenny sounds confident to me, not cocky. kenny has definately improved more than diego has since they 1st fought. besides that fight was at middleweight, 30 pounds over kennys natural weight. way different fight then their 1st meeting. this would be a close fight and could go either way. so what if diego has only lost to bigger fighters, so has kenny.
by bullsh*r on Jun 28, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Koba is right and at this point i would be more than confident in picking him against Diego. He has superior striking (having one good combo that always ends with an uppercut does not mean good striking) and comparable ground games with wrestling going to sanchez. Wrestling won’t factor in though since diego’s style is more about burning guys out on the fence than actually dominance. Kenny’s cardio is too good to fall prey to that and he is definitely the smarter gameplanner.
by NameNotRequired on Jun 28, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I liked Diego from the beginning and have never bet against Kenny after his first 3 fights where he proved me wrong everytime. I agree with you about Kenny being the smarter fighter, I think he is probably one of the smartest fighters in the octogan the way he always adapts to each opponent and always manages to fight his fight and not fall victim to the strengths of his opponents, unfortunately for him, Sherks brute strength and power was to much for him. That is what won Sherk the fight, even though Kenny was the superior fighter technically, Sherk just overpowered him. If Kenny was a little stronger in that match, or Sherk decided to stand and trade like he has been lately, I think the result would have been different. If Diego goes in there underestimating Kenny he will lose, but considering Diego has never been close to being submitted, never really been beaten up and never really been in any real trouble until Guida had him on his back (where he still couldn’t do much damage), you know it is going to be an awesome match. Kennys hellbows could get the fight stopped with cuts, or Diegos solid jaw could be a deciding factor (don’t really remember seeing Kenny ever really get hit).
by Ade on Jun 28, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Kill-Flo and Diego are probably my two favorite fighters because they are both well-rounded MMA fighters who are capable of finishing a fight at any time from any position. Both have exceptional BJJ skills, so those would cancel each other out. Both have excellent kickboxing and Muay Thai. I think the difference in this fight would come down to Diego having a big advantage in strength and wrestling. Diego via UD.
by PW on Jun 28, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions
I can’t wait to see it. I don’t think I’d be betting on it though.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 28, 2009 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Remember that Sherk was likely on the ‘roids when he fought Kenny. That guy hasn’t been the same since he got busted and would probably get thrashed by Kenny or Diego right now. Also Kenny and Diego were at 185 when they fought before, which I think was a better weight for Diego than Kenny (I guarantee cutting to 155 is harder on Sanchez than Florian). So there have been too many variables to really look at the past without taking it with a grain of salt.
All that said, I’d go with Kenny to beat Diego. The two are very close in terms of skill but Kenny would have the deeper gas tank. The weight cut would start affecting Diego as the fight wore on, and though Guida couldn’t take advantage of his superior cardio, Kenny’s got the killer instinct so I think he would.
by just some dong on Jun 28, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with PW..it would be a close fight, but Diego strength and Granite chin will take him right to a Unanimous decision win over Ken flow!
Only time Diego has ever lost was against Big, Strong wrestlers. Kenny is the exact opposite of a big strong wreslter, and i THINK dIEGO Would just rough him up! Kenny has great jits, but Diego’s is out of this world (on top)…kenny has the better guard..should be interesting!
If it were a 3 rounder, i say Diego via U decision… 5 rounder, Diego would TKO him!

by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Jun 28, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Kenny’s strength is very underated, since Sherk he’s gotten a lot physically and mentally stronger while his game has improved by leaps and bounds. Im probably one of the few that think Kenny would squeek a split decision over Sanchez.
by DAVE A on Jun 28, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions
they are so evenly skilled that it comes down to who is the better fighter and that’s Diego!
by RoB on Jun 28, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions
There are few fighters I respect more than Florian. His steady progression due to intelligence and work ethic has been impressive. Technically, Florian is more skilled than Diego. Diego brings an aggression level and flat out intensity very few can deal with. What would determine the winner would be whose style of fight it would become. If it stays technical Florian will win. If it becomes a brawl it favors Diego. Either way, it’s a great potential matchup. Kneejerk pick right now, I’d lean slightly toward Florian. I think he’s shown greater, more consistent improvement over time and is far different than when they fought at 185.
by CL on Jun 29, 2009 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions
CL…good points but if you remember when Kenny fought Huerta…Huerta wanted to make that fight a brawl and Kenny calmly side stepped out of any brawl in order to stick to his game plan and pick Huerta apart with technical striking. Kenny is extremely mentally tough and he’s a very calm and patient fighter. He’s also gotten a lot more physically stronger as well. Diego brings a crazy intensity to his fights but I don’t see that being a problem for Kenny. Diego has a weak guard and Kenny will exploit that. Kenny’s level of jitz is a lot higher than Diego’s and when the fight hits the mat…that’s when you will see the difference. People still underrate Kenny and when he beats BJ…maybe some will come around. Florian is such a smart fighter and he trully dedicates himself to the arts and he can adapt to any style in the cage.
by Buster Bluth on Jun 29, 2009 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions
All I hear about is how much Kenny as improved…what about Diego? Coming off TUF this guys has improved tremendously…his improvements are overshadowed because he was already a beast on TUF…while Kenny was a nerdy whimp..so Kenny gets all the credit for being improved, and diego gets overshadowed!
When Diego was on TUF, he basically had the skill sets of Jake Sheilds: GOod wretsling, great ju jutsu top game, ending fights by mounting his opponent and TKO’ing away. Diego;s stand up was putrid!
Now this guy has shown the ability to win technical boxing match up….he has shown abilities to turn the fight into a muy tai brawl and fight very effectively..His guard has gotten a lot better. I could tell how much technically better he is off his back when clay was on top of him. Grant it, he couldnt submit clay, but not many fighters can. Once he gets acclimated with the weight cut….he will thrash Kenny!
But, If I were Deigo I would NOT fight kenny until getting used to the weight cut….
by JOhn G on Jun 29, 2009 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions
Nice post john…Diego’s stand up has improved tremendously when you look back on his days in TUF. I wouldn’t say his muay thai is great but it was non existant on the show…his boxing is what really sticks out when you look at Diego now. He was never really a threat on his feet back then. He would just go for the takedown and start pounding on people. I think his ground game off his back still has a ways to go but luckily for him…he doesn’t up there very often.
Having said that…Kenny has improved in every single attribute of a fighter…he’s mentally and physically stronger…his jitz is close to a world class level if not already there…his muay thai is very underrated. His kicks are very effective and he uses a variety of them. His jabs score points and his footwork is ever improving if I can steal a Goldberg quote…lol. He didn’t have a lot of confidence on the show but ever since he fought Sherk…his rededication to the arts is very apparent.
If these two were to fight…one thing is for sure…it would be an absolute war. It’s hard to see either fighter getting finished. I think the advantages that Diego has are wrestling and boxing…Kenny has better jitz and muay thai. Diego is physically stronger while Kenny is a smarter in-cage fighter. Styles make fights and this is the perfect contrast to each other. I still give the edge to Kenny cause I think Diego still underestimates Florain…BIG mistake.

This is going to happen eventually and I can’t f*ckin wait! I think Diego still takes it. He has only a couple of fights at 155, but even at 170 he beat everyone. His only 2 losses were by decision and so I think he did extremely well at 170. Another fight or two at this weight class and he’ll be settled in and kicking asses; including Florian’s.
by Caknakker on Jun 28, 2009 1:02 PM EDT reply actions
Kenny would beat that ass at 155. No matter what happened before, they would be fighting at 30 lbs less each. It’s a entirely different situation.
by JasonFahQ on Jun 28, 2009 1:04 PM EDT reply actions
Kenny Florian getting too big for his boots methinks…Diego was a force at 170 and he lost a lacklustre fight to Kos and a close split decision to Fitch, which I thought he actually won. So Diego has done a lot at 170 and he will eventually be the champion at 155. Kenny got schooled by Sherk lest he forget and he’ll got owned by BJ. Diego is the only guy at 155 that will give BJ a good fight…for the time being anyway.

If you are talking about fighting skill when you say talent, then I would definately say that Diego is the more talented fighter. Forrests’ stand up is no better than Diegos, and I do not beleive that Forrest has the ground game that Diego displayed in the Diaz, Karo and even the Fitch fight even though he lost.

Diego has beaten Nick Diaz, Karo Parisyan and Joe Riggs at 170.
Much tougher competition than Kennys faced at 155. Kennys biggest wins are against Huerta and Stevenson. Diego also has a win against Stevenson. That was his LW debut, so Im not really interested in hearing how Kenny finished him and Diego didnt. There is an adjustment period whenever a fighter drops weight classes.
Sure Kenny has evolved and it will be a much tougher fight this time around. But I do not think Kenny has the tools to beat Diego. The only fighters who can give Diego problems are stronger wrestlers. Kenny does not have that advantage on Diego. Kenny will never submit Diego and he cant KO Diego.
I see this being a closer fight this time around, but the same result.
Unfortunately we will not see this fight anytime soon, cause Kenny will lose to BJ and Diego will get the next titelsshot.

haven’t you noticed Kenny’s footwork as of late. he avoids damae and sets up knees, elbows, and kicks while his opponents attempt their persuit. Kenny is exremly light on his feet and has great range while Diego is more of a Frazier to Kenny’s Ali (style). If Diego starved himself to make ‘55 at the time Kenny fought sherk then Diego might have handled sherk better than Kennny did, but it’s very unlikely he could have beat him.

. First when they fought the first time it was florian third mma profesional fight. Second huerta having a suspect chin? When have we seen him get knocked out? He got drop by guida but recovered quickly. Diego has never had 1 punch knockout power but he is explosive. I think this would be a very technical striking battle that would go to decision and be a close decision. Everyone thinks diego has godly striking because he fought guida who has horrible standup .Also diego hasnt finished alot of his fights he finished luigi at the end of the fight and joe riggs. I not going to predict a winner if they fought because it to close to call. And if kenny beat bj penn which is a huge if. Then i give kenny the advantage against diego because a 5 round fight favors kenny because diego said he still having trouble making weight and never has been thru a 5 rounder. He was also slowing down in the third against guida. I gurantee that no one would be getting owned in the second fight.

I don’t think Florian is talking trash. He is just responding because Diego has made comments recently how he dominated Florian before and expects to do the same again. Regardless of the previous outcome, I don’t see where Diego can think like that after so much time has passed since the previous bout and people get better in the sport and things change. He’s obviously got a big ego but I think he will be surprised at what Kenny brings to the fight assuming they get a chance to fight again.

Yeah if Diego cant get the takedown early than he is in serious trouble. Kenny has excellent cardio and superior leg kicks and better punching and better submissions. Maybe Diego will bully Kenny the entire fight again??? Both fighters are worthy of holding a belt sooner or later…

ok yea lets look at the actual facts, for kenny to even get past bj is gonna be too difficult for him and the explosiveness of sanchez will get kenny not to mention the fact that sanchez’s wrestling is excellent he’ll take kenny down and pound him to a tko. If sanchez doesn’t get kenny hurt in the first round then this probably will be kenny’s fight but until i see it with my own eyes diego won’t have to worry about kenny anytime soon since he wont make it past bj
