Gilbert Yvel vs Paul Buentello Affliction fight now likely for Aug. 1

With a scary-looking win last night, Gilbert Yvel is now set to take on Paul Buentello at Affliction: "Trilogy," which is scheduled for the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Aug. 1, 2009.
"The Hurricane" just got done storming Pedro Rizzo at "Ultimate Chaos" from the Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss., stopping the Brazilian in the first round with a series of strikes that were downright criminal (albeit legal inside a cage). He announced after the knockout that the victory earned him another shot under the Affliction banner.
The Dutch Muay Thai specialist was roughed up by former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett in his first attempt with the promotion at "Day of Reckoning" on Jan. 24. Prior to the beating he took against "The Babyface Assassin," Yvel was enjoying a seven-fight win streak, dating back to mid 2006.
He'll look to again get back to winning consecutive fights in little less than six weeks, but it won't be easy against "The Headhunter."
Buentello -- who was originally booked to battle Tim Sylvia before he sustained a nine-second knockout loss to aging professional boxer Ray Mercer earlier this month -- was last seen using Kiril Sidelnikov’s face as a human punching bag for almost three full rounds at Affliction 2: "Day of Reckoning" earlier this year.
The American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) product went on to eventually score a late third round technical knockout over the Russian Sambo specialist, who later tested positive for having banned substances in his system after the match.
This will be Buentello’s third appearance under the Affliction banner — he outpointed last minute replacement Gary Goodridge on the judges scorecards to earn a unanimous decision victory in the promotion’s inaugural show in 2008.
Over his past 13 fights Buentello has only dropped two contests — one was for a shot at Andrei Arlovski’s UFC heavyweight title back at UFC 55 and the other was at the hands of Alistair Overeem last November on a Strikeforce card.
Affliction 3: "Trilogy" will feature a main event between WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and top-ranked division player, Josh Barnett. Former Dream middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi is also expected to make his fighting debut on American shores against Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Renato "Babalu" Sobral.

Yvel will beat most heavyweights that dont have a ground game…simple as that. its actually pretty simple, stand with Yvel, and you will probably lose. NOt only is he a very brutal striker, with power oozing out of every limb, but the guys is just a tough SOB. He will be able to absorb more of his striking opponents shots, and I dont think too many of his opponents can absorb his striking and continue to move forward.
He is going to KO Buentello. I am sure of it, and he will probably be an underdog like he was last night against Rizzo….I will continue to ride Gilbert all the way to the bank, like I did last night.
Also: YOU guys need to watch this weeks segment on mma live. Bellator creator and CEA, Bjorn rebney talks about how bellator was created and its future. This guy is a very intelligent man, and he has come up with some great idea’s and concepts which IMO will make Bellator a success in the future, and cause the company to continue to grow. Just a really smart guy! He also said that in about 30-45 days announcements will start coming forward about season 2, and what English speaking Network season 2 will be on!

Wrong Jared. Paul will pick Yvel apart on the feet – Yvel is just a brawler and Paul can be a technical striker when he wants to be. If it’s a brawl, Yvel should be favoured but if it’s a technical fight Yvel will lose. And lol at Yvel thinking he deserves a shot at the champion – has he already conveniently forgotton about the beating he received from JB?

yeah but that was ground and pound im willing to bet that yvel will win a quick ko like the one arlovski got maybe not 10 seconds but a minute or so into the fight.

there won’t be any GnP if Yvel tries to bumrush Paul, cause Paul will put him to sleep…

Who would have thought that after the collapse of Pride, that the Hurricane would be a somewhat relevant fighter. With these two wins, he will crack top 15 rankings for sure.
Jay- Gilbert trained at Vos Gym for how long? You don’t think he can be technical, if he chose to? Don’t watch the Kiril fight to decide on Paul because baby fedor was way out of his league and had serious serious flaws in his game. As far the barnett fight, no one will convince me that barnett wasn’t getting smashed from the bottom, period. (Don’t know why but after that performance, i’ve become a fan)

i have watched Gilbert Yvel fight for a long time now…and although I never really a fan of his personality,I always looked forward to an enjoyed watching him fight.
I remember I was so amped up for the Yvel/Wanderlei fight.I anticipated one of te biggest wars of all-time, and then I was NEVER so disapointed like i WAS When wandy landed that groin kick, shattering Yvel’s cup, causing Yvel a world of pain and the fight to stop. I am such a wand fan, and I remember being scared out of my mind that day cause I thought Yvel would KO him….If you could hang with wanderlei in the striking department during wand title reigh in Pride, then you are one bad mofo
I dont know where you guys are getting hte idea that Yvel isnt technica. Buentello may be the most texchnial boxer, but Yvel has much more technical Muy Tai…and if he wants to turn it into a brawl, he has the chin and overall toughness to back it up.
He did a ton of damage to Barnett off his back, and there arent too many men in the world that could have lasted over 10 minutes ith Barnett mounting them landing BOMBS repeatedly.
Buentello’s chin is wiggidy wiggidy whack…Yvel’s is great…Yvel will be the one doing the headhunting!

NNR, despite his training at the Vos Gym has Yvel ever demonstrated his techincal prowess in any of his fights? Erm, NO. Therefore, there is no reason for me – or anyone for that matter – to expect him to start fighting smart against Paul. Buentello is a touch mofo who picks his shots and I don’t make that statement based on his last fight. I’ve seen all his fights and he’s solid on his feet; he may lack the power that Yvel has but he more than makes up for it in brawn. Kudos to Yvel for sticking in there against JB, but his ability to last until the 3rd round is more a reflection of JB’s inability to inflict effective GnP than Yvel’s ability to absorb punishment. We’re either gonna see a Yvel brutal KO or a Paul UD victory – and I believe the latter to be the more likely outcome.

This fight is a upgrade for affliction and the third best match-up on the card.

As far as pure grit/toughness, i believe they are equal to each other. Buentello had a propensity to gassing but he looked fresh in the 3rd against Kiril. I agree with your statement that Yvel KO or Buentello UD. But i tend to belive the Yvel KO simply because paul is not the fastest starters. Unlike this fight, both suck at grappling or wrestling so i doubt any ground game even if a slip occured. Btw it still boggles me that we are dicussing Yvel in a serious manner in a fight that can actually affect top 15 rankings. Anyways, we’ll have to see who’s right.

yeah if Gilbert tries to rush Paul like he did against Rizzo last night he’s getting knocked out!… Roman Zentsov knocked him out like that in Pride when Gilbert rushed him with his hands down and swinging..

A much better fight than Sylvia. I thought Buentello would have knocked him out in the first round even before the Mercer fight, has always been one of my favourite heavyweight strikers. This is definately a more of a quality match up. I remember watching a clip of Remy Bonjasky working out with Yvel, there workouts looked like proper fights. Some seriously powerful kicks were being delivered. Not sure how Paul is going to cope with those. This is not going past the first round, can’t wait.

i m 100% sure that he would KO ARLOVSKI like what he did against RIZZO!hhhhh…man ARLOVSKI should train hard head movement and that’s VERY important for fighters…
