That’s all on the ref. Yvel did nothing wrong.

I wounldn’t say “all on the ref” but ya probably 80% ref, 20% Bert…something should be said with regards to common sense. Pedro obviously was way out there. I know adrenaline kicks in but c’mon, the dudes not moving

wtf? how is it at all yvel’s fault???? half of you guys dont like him cuz he is a ‘dirty fighter’ people complaining that he was hitting him too hard when he was out!?! well he is not going to hit him softly when his objective is to get the ref to stop the fight!
this was completely the ref’s fault!!!
he watched him take too many shots before stepping in
nobody complained when gonzaga punched cro cop a couple of times after he was clearly out but just cuz yvel is known for being dirty he gets partly blaimed for the ref being stupid

Yvel did nothing wrong, he’s grown out of his old childish ways.

nOt only did Gilbert do NOTHING wrong, Im actually shocked to see him acting classy like this. He was very respectful to Rizzo after the fight and during this interview.
I like watching him fight, but have crucified his actions through the years…so I gotta give him props when he conducts himself with class like he has been!

I didn’t watch the fight at all. but if I was Yvel, I’d stop first and ask the ref and even point to Rizzo’s “lifeless” body. Hehe!

Just skimming the headlines for the first time since Friday… That was 100% F’ing BRUTAL. Looks like Yvel vs Buentello now for Affliction.
As for who’s fault? Yes it is the ref’s responsibility to stop the fight, however, there have been many fights where the fighter is clearly unconcsious and the opponent simply stops hitting them. BUT, there are also many instances when the fighter knows the opponent is out but continues to hit them anyway. For example, Rampage vs Wanderlei 3 – the ref is pulling Rampage by the waist and Rampage is still drilling the sleeping Wanderlei.
Unconcious fighters getting beat senseless (literally) is the only aspect of the sport that I can somewhat understand the arguement made by the people who oppose mma.
BUT, a lot of us like to watch that kind of stuff.
by ViolentMike on Jun 29, 2009 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If I were an MMA fighter and I KNEW 100% that my opponent was unconcious, the only way I consciously continue to hit them in the face is if I had a serious personal issue with him.
by ViolentMike on Jun 29, 2009 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
or just personal issue’s~ which yvel does have..
yvel even admitted in this interview above that he thought it was a late stop..
he said himself he knew perdo was out..yet he continued to drop bombs on a dead body..
respectful in one sentence and then contradicts himself in another..
definitely an entertaining fighter though..

I just rewatched the slow mo replay a few more time, and I have to say the ref stopped it right after Rizzo was clearly knocked out. Some unnecessary damage yes, but clearly not way after he was knocked out.

I want to see Yvel fight Overeem; I’m curious to see if Overeem would even try to stand with him or just go straight for the TD. I don’t think anyone in the HW division wants to trade with Yvel at all. I knew the Rizzo fight was going straight to the ground regardless of what anyone said. I guess the weakness in his ground game makes it the easy choice. Maybe Brett Rogers would trade with him?
by O damn he got caught on Jun 29, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Alright if thats the case this is a perfect example. Mirko Cro Cop was fighting somebody and the guy was shot and done for and Mirko litterally stopped punching the guy and looked at the ref; and was like call the fight already! Its the refs fault!

Gonzaga did that as well against Hendricks. Funnily enough I’ve just read an article by a boxing journalist on the UFC and he complained about Hamill-Munoz being a late stoppage, it’s a good job that he didn’t see this fight as it rivalled Brown-Sell for lateness. This ref should be suspended for negligence, because of him Rizzo could have been seriously injured.
I don’t blame Yvel, he acted really classy hushing the crowd and checking on Rizzo. The referee should have stopped the fight a lot sooner, that is his responsibility not Yvel’s. Maybe he could have told the ref to stop it a la Gonzaga/Hendricks but I don’t know what more he could have done in that situation. Yvel deservedly has a bad reputation but in this case he was not in the wrong.
As for Rizzo, after another brutal KO defeat I think he should consider retirement. He’s way past being a top HW and these brutal stoppages are not doing his health any favours. If he doesn’t stop fighting soon I fear a sad end to his career.

i was one of the peeps bashing on yvel~
and i must say, i agree with johnG.. i have never seen gil act so respectful..
at first i never saw how he shushed the crowd, and waited on knees for pedro to awake..
not till i watched the fight the second time..
i also thought it was about 5 power shots after the ko~ but again i was wrong, while rewatching it, i only counted 2 unnecessary punches..
all in all~ like i said a million times yesterday~ its all the REFS fault, no doubt..
but i do agree with mcarthur.. gilbert needs some more common sense.. pedro looked bodied~ i dont care about adrenaline, at that point u should know ur opponent isnt moving..
but still ALL the refs fault..

the fight isnt over till the ref says its over…yvel was just doing his job…but its shit like this that causes early stoppages…when refs start getting criticized they started getting overly cautious…this will start a trend of early stoppages in this organization…no ref wants to be in charge when someone gets hurt…
so now be prepared for fights getting stopped over bullshit now…one tiny little punch connects and a fighter gets a little wobbled and before he gets a chance to fight back it will be stopped…they’ll all have that picture of rizzo in the back of their mind…“oh shit i dont want that to happen on my watch i better stop this”..

by HellaHectic on Jun 28, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
This little crap organization will have no affect whatsoever on ufc 100… This kinda stuff happens all the time.. just because its gilbert yvel people make a big deal.. because he’s a “dirty fighter”
by ItsNormlToSmokePot on Jun 28, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
but in general it does…i forget which fight it was a month or 2 ago where the guy was pounded in the ufc fight so bad and the ref should have stopped it 2 or 3 different times…nd dana said the ref should never ref another fight..(sorry, forgot the names of the guys)…but u have that example, and now this one…once it appears as if its an across the board problem the refs will begin to feel the pressure to stop fights early…in all organizations…
so it isnt exactly true to say this fight wont have somewhat of a ripple effect in other organizations..

Brazil 3 USA 2
USA blows a 2-0 lead at halftime and lets 3 unanswered. Exactly why I can’t get behind my team. If the USA ever wins a cup I think it diminishes world football.
by Z on Jun 28, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What are you talking about. Your guys did you proud. Massive underdogs and man for man on paper way outclassed. They did terrificly well to make the final. I know it’s only the Confederations Cup but it marks a big step forward for US football, sorry soccer. If you guys could just unearth a couple of truly worldclass talenets you could compete with the top 10 on a consistent basis.
They didn’t blow it, Brazil just raised their game and found another gear or two. They couldn’t do anything about.

US earned a ton of respect internationally today and with the win over Spain. Trouble is all of our premier athletes are steered toward baseball, football and basketball. Still, with 300 million people we should be able to find 24 guys who can compete and win at the highest levels.
by PW on Jun 28, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You have 24 million people playing the game at some level but only 1500 pros.
The US did earn a tonne of respect. I look forward to seeing how you guys get on next year in the World Cup. I think you guys should be aiming for a QF anyway but it depends on who you draw in the group stages. I had to laugh at Spain, they’re back to their bottling ways. Barring last year, they’ve always been the ridiculous talented team who find a way to blow it. The Dutch fall into the same category too which is a shame.

We do have 24 guys that could compete at the highest level in soccer, there in the NFL and NBA. Just look at LeBron James abd Reggie Bush. Those guys are animals.
by Bobby on Jun 28, 2009 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well I imagine someone Lebron’s size would have to be either a keeper, centre back or a defensive midfielder. Patrick Viera, Yaya Toure stlye defensive mid. Or a box to box machine ala Michael Essien. I know you guys haven’t a clue what I’m talking about but yeah he probably could but most of the NBA guys are too tall and leggy to be able to manipulate a football well at the highest level therefore they’d probably have defensive roles.
It’s still primarily a skill based game. Running 100m in 10 flat isn’t worth f all if you actually suck skill wise. I think Djibril Cisse is in the wrong sport. Walcott could still come good.
You guys could be awesome at Rugby which is pretty much football without pads and helmets.
by RobH86 on Jun 28, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am awesome at rugby, thank you very much! Actually, I’m a good player on a D-III Texas team, played every position from lock to wing. And given Americans’ love of action and violence, I don’t know why rugby isn’t bigger here.

Because of the NFL I suppose. I always find it funny how the American fans at the games boo the opposing kicker when he’s about to take a penalty or conversion. It’s hilarious because no one else does it. Everyone else goes dead quiet.

you guys all made my point for me. IF the elite players in the US ever start to play soccer at the pro level then we may win but if we keep going in half assed with so-so player and win a cup or a high level tournament then I still says it diminishes world soccer. I am admittedly ignorant of the sport but my best friend is a huge soccer fan and was a player his whole life. His theory is great! He says that the main problem in this country is the lack of pros teaching at the beginner level. He says it is all dads who would rather play their sons than play the best players and develop them. The US coach’s son is a starter…coincidence?
I suppose I should commment on the actual thread topic :)
I think it’s all on the ref. His main job is to protect the fighter. All too often I see the ref standing around watching the fight like a fan and getting surprised when someone is KOed or choked. There is no excuse for a fighter to be choked out and the ref not know it. He should see it coming and be prepared. I see it and I am at home! It has disturbed me enough that i am saving to take the online cert course to become an MMA referee. I may also travel to CA to attend Big John’s course. I can do a better job than almost any of the ref i see.

Ok in that case the ref did an awful job. How did he let it go that long. What a disgrace. Everyone could have called it….Fabiano was a mile offside lol. I kid I kid.
No seriously, horrible job by the ref. Still though Yvel was trying to kill him lol. I remember when Matt Brown pretty much knocked out Pete Sell on his feet and he looked at the referee. No such compassion from Yvel. Then again you know what you’re getting into when you sign up to fight but you expect the referee to protect the fighters better than this.
I wonder will there be any repercussions for the referee?

Only one extra shot. 2 shots less than the unnecessary 3 extra shots performed by Rampage against Wandy.

The fighter can stop throwing blows on his own accord regardless of ref stoppage or not. If your opponents is out the fight wont go on very simple, I think Yvel shouldve just stopped throwing regardless of who says what.
by the spyder on Jun 29, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rampage shouldve been suspended for that BS he pulled. Remember when Babolou got suspended for holding his choke to long!!!!! BJ did it to someone in one of his fights as well, his choke was held way longer than Babalou’s, I was shocked when nobody even said anything about it. Regardless Yvel shoulve stopped hitting him. Its moments like that that make MMA not look like a legitimate sport, that was f"ing brutal and I can understand why someone watching for the first time would be put off by that incident, it was way more brutal than it needed to be. Just a though but isnt Martial Arts about mutual respect between fighter cause ther wasnt much shown there at all………discusting if you ask me!!!!

These guy’s are trained to throw until the ref stops. It’s easy to sit on the outside and say he could of stopped. The adrenaline was pumping through Yvel and he stopped soon as the ref touched him like he’s trained to.
