Din Thomas was willing to drop his drawers for Javier Vasquez at 'Ultimate Chaos' (Exclusive)

"I got to 146.6 and when I asked the athletic commission if I was okay, they said 'yes.' It made sense because some commissions allow you a two-pound allowance. So I left the stage and started drinking right away to get rehydrated. Javier's camp then apparently told the commission that they wanted me to cut the extra half-pound. So I tried and damn near killed myself in the sauna. It didn't make sense -- if Javier wanted me to cut the weight why wasn't I told on the stage? I would have dropped my drawers and made it."

-- Din Thomas reacts to getting pulled from his featherweight bout against Javier Vasquez at last night's (June 27) 'Ultimate Chaos' pay-per-view event from Biloxi, Mississippi. "Dinyero" became ill after a difficult weight cut to make the 145-pound limit — something he apparently had to do twice after rehydrating at the conclusion of his first attempt. Thomas was of the understanding that he had a green light from the commission despite the overage -- the Vasquez camp saw otherwise. Mark Kergosien was called in as their new opponent after Thomas fell ill from repeatedly cutting weight and was scratched from the card.

the told him 1.6 lbs over was good that’s what is unacceptable.

did you not read the story. It was 0.6 over. He could have cut that in the extra time easy if taking off his shorts weren’t enough. Its Javier’s camp pulling some bs and it screwed Din out of a paycheck

Cant believe that Tom Atencio had world renowned chute box trainer, Rafael Cordero in his corner! I would give my left nut to be trained by him!

Symantics. The fight was at 145, so he was 1.6 pounds over. Usually they allow fighters to be only 1 pound over, so yes he only needed to cut an extra .6 pounds, but he was still 1.6 lbs over.

P.S. This is the fault of the commission. He could have easily made weight if he was told that he needed to drop the extra .6 pounds. It’s pretty unreasonable to tell a guy he’s fine and then ask him to drop more weight after he’s started re-hydrating. The commission should have told the other camp that it was too late.

Didn’t Gina Carano lose a few pounds from taking off her undergarments?

@JOhn G

Atencio looked really good in that fight. I had no expectations of the guy, never having seen him fight. Actually, I expected lop-sided fight with him getting beat, based on his Twitter updates (all about flying around and having interviews). In fact, he was training hard, and the guy looked very sharp. I mention on another news blog that his style (not his experience level) reminded me a lot of Brandon Vera. For a guy with only a 2-0 record, Atencio looks and fights like he’s had a good 10 fights. Tenacious, sharp accurate striking, devastating leg kicks, and great Muay Thai and jits defense. Definitely won my respect.

I don’t care about the .6 pounds since I know Dinero could have cut it. For any of you out there who have never wrestled, the second you start drinking or eating anything, it adds weight and becomes hard to take back off in a few hours time. This was clearly just Javier trying to break Din down to have an easier fight. IMO this was a very dumb move on Javier, he should have just taken a percentage of Din’s purse and then fought the bigger named Din. Instead he fought Mark…

and what difference is half a pound gonna make like come on

by DantheMan on Jun 28, 2009 12:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It’s the principal. Javier made the cut so Din should have to as well.

Anyway, this is the commissions screw up (and Din’s of course). They should never have told him it was ok to come in 0.6 over without talking to Vasquez’s camp first.

Din was puking his guts out and had to go the hospital. I don’t think it’s like he’s making it sound. He is trying to spin the situation, the reality is, he came in with too much weight to cut and lost the fight on the scales. If he was fine at 146.6 he would have made the fight, but he was too drained by it even if they would have let him fight.

I thought something was up when I first saw that he weighed in 1.6 lbs over the limit, not making weight is the ultimate sin in this sport but Vasquez’s camp and the athletic commission shouldn’t have messed Din around like that. It may be unacceptable to miss weight but it’s just as bad to allow a fighter to compete then change your mind when he’s rehydrating and force him to make another weight cut. Not good from any side involved in this debacle.

Vasquez has done nothing wrong here. He has every right to ask Din to cut the weight.

by thecolourofsleep on Jun 29, 2009 2:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Then after he won the fight he shoulda kept his mouth shut about how he’s so sorry it wasn’t Din that he got to fight; and how he was really looking forward to it.

the contract was for 145 din had a enough time to get to weight. javie trained hard and was there to fight bottom line

by ts on Jun 28, 2009 7:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Half the battle is cutting the weight. If your not able to hit the contracted 145 then you shouldn’t be able to fight. Din is a professional and a veteren, if he us not able to make 145 then he should go back up to 155. Absolutely Din fault, Javier camp has all the right to have Din make 145. Din lost to the scale before he could ever throw a punch, Din’s fault…
