Gilbert Yvel scores brutal knockout of Pedro Rizzo at 'Ultimate Chaos' ...
... that even had the referee frozen in time:

Props: Sherdog.com
Was the official asleep at the wheel or were Yvel's violent head bouncers just too quick to stop sooner?

by mataleon on Jun 28, 2009 12:38 AM EDT reply actions
that ref should be fired!!~
im suprised rizzo’s not dead..
and yvel is such a dirty fighter.. adrenaline is one thing~ but those were straight up power shots!! rizzo was clearly out..
very entertaining ko~ but that ref should be let go for sure..
and gilbert just continues to gain fame for being a disrespectful son of a pistol~

great photo by the way!
the picture says it all~
ref sleeping = yes!
gilbert too violent = yes!
pedro obviously unconscious = yes!
by stinky~fingers on Jun 28, 2009 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions
gilbert too violent? you cannot blame the fighter!! you are told to fight until the ref pushes you off of your opponent, thats what he did. i have a problem with guys who take extra shots, but thats when the ref is trying to stop them, but they keep punching. in this case, yvel did nothing wrong!!

If Rizzo had died, the ref should have been charged as an accessory after the act. Pathetic….and I keep thinking of the #1 thing refs are supposed to look for……fighters intelligently defending themselves. The picture speaks 1000 words.

caesar~ did u watch the fight?
those were straight power shots.. like 6 of them..
either the man was trying to kill pedro, or he is that stupid~
and i would like to think both..
gilbert has been labled a dirty fighter for a while dood, no sense in trying to defend the piece of shit..
by stinky~fingers on Jun 28, 2009 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions
i do agree its all about the ref’s wrong doing either way.
by stinky~fingers on Jun 28, 2009 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions
It’s on youtube already so you can watch it again. Gilbert looked to be showing respect, kneeling and waiting to make sure Rizzo was okay after the fight. I don’t think you can blame Gilbert too much in this case. He was looking at the chin and swinging to finish. Rizzo’s body was bouncing and as a fighter you don’t know if it’s a flash ko or what and your adrenaline is running.. Ref could have done a little better..no doubt. Looked like three extra shots for sure.

Agreed, it’s the ref’s fault, not Yvel. Plus earlier, the commentators mention Rizzo throwing possibly illegal elbows and even maybe a headbutt. Just a nasty fight all around.

i just watched it again..
ur right, punch. it was 3 shots extra.. 3 very powerful shots..some could even say only 2 were unnecessary..
i still think yvel knew what he was doing and figured the ref wasn’t stoping it so keep punching..
ultimatley, yvel is a disrespectful fighter for other reasons, and i guess i jumped the gun a little by blaming him that way..
the ref is fully at fault and should have done a better job..

THat was one of the easiest paydays of my entire life. I bet BIG MONEY on Yvel as an underdog. I had so much money riding on that fight that I really dont have a problem with fighting til the ref pulls u off. It an unwritten rule that fighters are supposed to stop fighting when they know there opponent is out….but the real rule is fight till the ref pulls you off, and thats what Gilbert did, so all in all, without knowing the adrenaline going through yvel’s body or what he was thinking…I gotta blame the ref!
by JOhn G on Jun 28, 2009 7:38 AM EDT up reply actions
i’ve watched it a few times stinky and i will stick to my opinion that it is not the fighters responsibility to stop the fight, it is the ref’s. this is 100% the ref’s fault, no doubt in my mind. it is not yvel’s responsibility to decide when his opponent is out or not defending himself, it is his job to finish the fight, and thats what he did. i am in no way shape or form an yvel fan, but that ref sucks!!
that being said, i’d love to see lashley in the ufc against someone like al turk or mccully

no it’s the refs job… blaiming a fighter is weak, i would want to kill somebody that tried to take me out too!
by RoB on Jun 28, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions
Yvel did nothing wrong and anyone here trying to claim otherwise is an idiot. He fought, he clipped him and went for the kill. It’s not his job to determine if the other fighter is out or not. Everything must fall on the ref for being asleep. His past the past and everyone needs to stop drudging things up at every look he makes. John – Sorry on my Horodecki tip if you followed it but i would imagine you didn’t lose out too much on the overall parlay multiplier.

he took 2 extra punches in a short time frame. the ref was leaping in there to stop it, can’t really fault him.
Yvel might be a dirty fighter but he showed a ton of respect by telling the crowd to be silent and kneeling on the canvas until Rizzo was up.
by kitsunex on Jun 28, 2009 2:19 AM EDT up reply actions
Amazing neglicence from the ref. Those three extra punches he allowed were full swing absolute bombs landing on a guy who was clearly out. Reminded me of the type of finish you’d get at UFC 3 or something not in 2009!! Lucky Rizzo wasn’t seriously hurt!
by attakdog on Jun 28, 2009 6:48 AM EDT up reply actions
BULLSHIT!!! i hope all fighters see this and stop fucking complaining about early stoppages. this is what happens when you cry about early stoppages. good job to the ref and this is a lesson to all.

Aw PEDRO is done giv it up he stinks so bad a BJJ black belt?!! really?? How come perdro, a BJJ BLack Belt took this guy with no ground game and couldn’t finish him, he looked like a blue belt
by iamdanawhite on Jun 28, 2009 12:41 AM EDT reply actions
LOL Yvel is decent at defending BJJ, he sucks at grappling/wrestling.
by Beaver on Jun 28, 2009 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions
Since Dana likes getting attention, how about signing Gilbert to the UFC? Imagine the press/attention on that one?!?! Phewwwwwwwww!!!!
by Drew C on Jun 28, 2009 12:51 AM EDT reply actions
if only……..Yvel’s first fight Kongo! The UFC needs another two or three exciting HW fighters with couture and NOG’s day’s coming to end
by Beaver on Jun 28, 2009 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions
yvel already tko’d kongo a while back..
if the ufc did sign him, id like to see him fight gonzaga..
either way, his time in the ufc would be short.. he wouldnt last..
by stinky~fingers on Jun 28, 2009 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah but it was back in 04 Kongo is much improved since then. Your probally right that he wouldn’t last against the top guy’s but he would have exciting fights in the middle of the pack with Kongo and Herring. Like Kongo he looks great in some some fights then every once in awhile looks brutal?
by Beaver on Jun 28, 2009 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions
yvel could be set up against any ufc hw and it would be entertaining..even a rematch with kongo, for reasons u listed above..
his next fight against paul beuntello is going to be a good scrap.. yvel is a perfect replacement for tim sylvia..
by stinky~fingers on Jun 28, 2009 2:10 AM EDT up reply actions
I just want to see Yvel face other top strikers with weak ground games. He will lose EVERYSINGLE time he faces a wrestler, so whats the point. I want to see him fight the likes of:
Aleks
Arlovski
overeem
Kongo
Buentello
cro cop
Sergei
Dos Santos vs. Yvel would be bad ass!
by JOhn G on Jun 28, 2009 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions
Bullshit about the fighter stopping only when the Ref says so… fighters are people and they understand what’s going on, fuck the adrenaline excuse.
Yvel is a fighting criminal and a piece of shit.
The ref is an idiot.
Sokodjou is a douchebag too, much like Sobral.
by Mike&Ike on Jun 28, 2009 1:09 AM EDT reply actions
Have you ever strapped up before? We are taught to finish fights not check his pulse to see if they are ok! Sometimes extra blows are thrown. It is regreted by most fighters. No one goes in to kill another fighter. When you start fighting you can speak!
by Smooth on Jun 28, 2009 5:06 AM EDT up reply actions
truth smooth… we are told a million times not to stop until the ref pulls us off!!
by ---Caesar--- on Jun 28, 2009 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions
Thats a poor excuse.
I have a state wrestling title, a brown belt in Judo, and have been kickboxing for 5 years. AS A FIGHTER WITH COMPETATIVE EXPERIENCE, I can say that you know. If not, you need to be in more control. Yes, you should fight until the ref stops you in an abstract situation but , come on, you just don’t repeatedly hit a man that is unconcious. Yvel didnt need to stop and check his pulse to see that he was attacking a corpse in that fight. Give us a break, get your act together Ceasar, and get the F*** outta here with that b*llsh*t.
Dont bother replying, I wont check this thread anymore.
by Striker Dave on Jun 28, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions
Thanks for your resume’ Striker, but you aren’t going to convince me to stop fighting before the ref stops me, its just not going to happen!

Saw the fight tonight and i thought Yvel did everything the right way….yes he is known as a dirty fighter but he did nothing dirty tonight…….. he landed about 5 punches to Rizzo but you couldnt tell that Rizzo was out until about the 3rd or 4th punch. Yvel did hit him one time clearly after he was out but when the ref stepped in Yvel was going for a 6th shot but pulled up on his own and never went through with it. After the fight you Yvel even quieted the crowd and sat down infront of Rizzo until he got up .
Congrats to YVEL for a nice KO.
by Tyson Jones on Jun 28, 2009 1:20 AM EDT reply actions
Yeah, everyone is too hard on this guy. He is fighitng and throwing blows.
It is like a car going 100 mph. You can’t just tap the breaks and you come to a complete stop.
That is why there are refs. Anger directed at Yvel for tonight is silly.
It is like anger directed at guns when people shoot people.
Yvel was just a fighter doing what he does. The ref is the one who is supposed to tell the fighter when to stop
by Bennie Blanco on Jun 28, 2009 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions
i agree with you but both your car and gun analogies are terrible, hahahahaha
by ---Caesar--- on Jun 28, 2009 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions
Saw the fight and I’d have to say the ref let only one too many punches happen before he stopped it. Granted that was a devastating one extra puch tho. Being a ref is not easy. The ref’s are screwed if they stop it too early or too late. They have to get it just right for nothing to be said.
by Glenn on Jun 28, 2009 1:36 AM EDT reply actions
I don’t see what everyone is making a fuss over I just watched the stoppage several times on YouTube and don’t see this as being that bad of a stoppage. The ref could have stopped one MAYBE two of those punches at the most but up into that last one he was still flailing and not stiff or anything. One of the announces said there were “5 or 6” extra hits in there but that is just not accurate. Everyone always bitches and moans when there is an early stoppage but if there’s a possible late one then everyone’s up in arms about figher safety. So all ya’ll talking about fighter safety remember that the next time an early stoppage happens and quit your bitchin.
by Captain Ernesto on Jun 28, 2009 2:10 AM EDT reply actions
late stop from the ref but you cant blame Yvel. went in and did his job and if the ref does his there wouldnt be an issue. very respectful at the end kneeling till Rizzo was up. bad decision by the ref not by the fighter.
by irishlilpete on Jun 28, 2009 5:03 AM EDT reply actions
He was out after the second punch but Yvel throws three more of the hardest shots he can muster before the ref stops it. Obviously the ref is an idiot but how many unanswered shots does it take before we blame Yvel? He threw 3 so does it take 4 or 5? Just because there’s a ref doesn’t mean you can’t use your own judgement. Look at Brown vs. Sell at UFC 96. Fighters know damn well when a fight is over that’s why you see some walk away before the ref steps in.
Gilbert Yvel is a piece of sh#t PERIOD.
by Vulcano on Jun 28, 2009 6:57 AM EDT up reply actions
I just came to here to say how the ref was the dumbest mother F***er on earth and was pissed off, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that was a ridiculousness late stoppage. That guy should be suspended from being in the ring for atleast a year, if not banned permanently.
by Alex on Jun 28, 2009 5:24 AM EDT reply actions
Dont say gilbert is too violent. that’s his fighting style – he is not a elegant fighter.
Late stoppage? yes!! clearly! blame the ref, better yet blame the organisation for putting in a unexperienced reff in a fight like this – it had fireworks written all over it.
by MMA040 on Jun 28, 2009 11:18 AM EDT reply actions
Fighters should be more careful with these types of shots. It just gives ANTI MMA Senators and Congressman extra ammo for the fight against MMA.
by oldskooljjsu on Jun 28, 2009 11:40 AM EDT reply actions
i saw 2 extra punches. it was a late stoppage but it is what it is. i feel bad for the ref. he only has seconds to react. just like NBA refs…they just miss calls. live with it.
