Anderson Silva might kill Forrest Griffin at UFC 101

Forrest Griffin after UFC 86

Props: Fresno Bee

Quoteworthy:

"I try to tell the truth and use a little humor to talk about how I really feel. Like if I think you're a [expletive] idiot, I'll try to tell you in a funny way. I'm kind of kidding, but there's also some truth to it.... I'm probably going to get hurt, if not die. This guy knows how to fight. The good news is, if I die, this book will sell a lot more copies and be worth more."

Former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin talks about his upcoming 205-pound non-title fight against middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva at UFC 101, which is slated for the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa., on Aug. 8. The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner from season one often jokes but situations, but admits he laces those jokes with bits of truth. So how close to death will Griffin get in the "City of Brotherly Love" on fight night if at all?

I hear that Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia already has a cozy bed put off to the side for Forrest….he is going to get BATTERED!

waaaahhh first you beat my boy shogun waaaahh. then you beat my boy rampage and took his belt waaaaahhhh.

by Egads on Jun 27, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

LMAO! Thats what john does everytime one of his man crushes loses a fight.

by JV on Jun 27, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok so you guys are predicting Forrest to beat Anderson. Great idea idiots!

by John G on Jun 27, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Forrest doesn’t have a hope at winning this fight, I like the guy but Andy is going to destroy him. Andy by TKO R2, if Forrest is still concious then he will be crying in the corner again.

by David W-S on Jun 27, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

john, where did Egads, or I, say that Forrest was gona win? You sound like the “idiot” cause obviously you didnt read between the lines.

by JV on Jun 27, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey, hey, hey! break it up!

John, there’s a little rubbing in left to do with Forrest beating Page and Shogun.

Having said that, I think we all know that Forrest is going to get destroyed by Anderson which will sooth the pain.

I can’t even think of a way Forrest can win. Like I say below, he has no KO power but he loves to swing so he basically gives Anderson 15 minutes to do what he does best.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 27, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

i never once said forrest was gonna beat silva…but then again i had rampage beating him too. my prediction is anderson is gonna grab a forrest kick and drop him like he did to irvin. its just your anti-forrest whining gets old. whether you like it or not he beat both your guys REGARDLESS of shoguns or rampages mental or physical conditions. a fighter has to be ready for a fight whether its skillset, physical health, or mental stability. should forrest have dumbed his abilities down for his opponents sake. maybe limp on one leg against shogun, or drink 12 beers for the rampage fight? forrest did his job right and you boys didnt. ps, rampage is my favorite lhw too

by Egads on Jun 27, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

John is such a little b*tch when it comes to his “favorite fighters”. He gets all butt hurt when they lose or god forbid someone talks negatively about them. F*ck You John

by JRE on Jun 27, 2009 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Like most of you guys I don’t see Forrest winning this fight. But he’s a tough, gritty, grind em’ out fighter who throws down. I actually think he’s giving himself to little credit. I don’t think Anderson will kill him or mame him or even blow him up, especially if the Anderson that we saw in the last two fights shows up. I think Forrest can make it a fight, and that’s what we need to see from Anderson Silva after his last two performances.

by DB on Jun 27, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

When you throw as hard and accurately as Silva does I don’t think there’s such thing as a war for him. Someone either takes him out before the final bell or Anderson wins. I would like to see him against Rampage personally. It would make it more exciting if you knew that one punch could end it all. I also think he needs an opponet who cuts off the ring and closes the distance. Outside striking isn’t going to get it done. Who knows, maybe Forrest will come in with an unexpected strategy that works, but I can’t think of one.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 27, 2009 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

lol, you’ll never know…andy is a dancer…basically forrest doesnt have anything to offer but this guy has tremendous heart…man! ufc is so biased..why is it have to be forrest…feed the dancer..im so hoping griffin would pull an upset to rain shame on dana and this brainwashed kids

by gaara on Jun 29, 2009 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions

caucasians look all same to me too.

by mmamasta on Jun 27, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

You can all say what you want, but I’m calling Forrest for the upset. Who in here gave him even the slightest chance against Shogun or ‘Page??? I know I picked him for both, and I’m really not a huge Griffin fan….. He might not finish Silva, but I would not be that surprised to see him win. And Forrest is a much bigger 205’er than Irvin. Either way the fight goes it should be a hell of a lot more exciting than the last fight we saw Silva in!

by allamerican on Jun 27, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Other than being a big 205er, what grounds do you base a Forrest win on? I don’t see anyway he wins this fight, Anderson winning is the lock of the year. And I’m still a bit bitter about the Rampage decision, I didn’t have Forrest winning so I have no idea how the judges all had it in his favour.

by David W-S on Jun 27, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

“And I’m still a bit bitter about the Rampage decision, I didn’t have Forrest winning so I have no idea how the judges all had it in his favour.”

Well David, you should have been a judge there then. Obviously if you say it is the case that makes it so. I think from now on, instead of having the judges, any decision should warrant a phone call to you to see what you think.

by Five Finger Death Punch on Jun 27, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I picked Forrest over Shogun and Page!!!!

But I’m pretty sure he’s about to get destroyed by Anderson.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 27, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I have no idea how Forrest could possibly do anything but get KTFO in this fight, that being said I’m predicting him to surprise everyone and gut out a 3 round decision win.

by GSP4Prez on Jun 28, 2009 3:13 AM EDT up reply actions

He is funny, you have to love this guy

by Bennie Blanco on Jun 27, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I never once found him funny at all…whats even worse is that now Soddolah acts like Forrest too!

Only thing funny about Forrest is watching him get destroyed liVE in my hometown at uFc 101…NOPw thats Focking Funny!

by JOhn G on Jun 27, 2009 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I found it funny when he choked out Shogun! I also thought it was very funny when he had Rampage limping around after those legs kicks!

by JV on Jun 27, 2009 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

I’ve always found Forrest to be funny. And Amir has always acted similar to Forrest since the show. I dont think he’s actually trying to sound like Forrest.

I hope Forrest pulls a miracle out of his ass and wins, but common sense would say that Anderson wins by (T)KO before the midway point of the fight.

by Syn on Jun 27, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont like his humor either; i feel like he’s trying to be too funny and it’s noticeable, same with Rampage.

I don’t understand what he’s trying to do with this attitude like “im gonna get my ass kicked.”

Is he trying to be cute or does he really feel like he’s in for an old-school beat down (albeit with very modern techniques)?

by jammin on Jun 27, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

LMAO JV :D

by natas on Jun 27, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I never thought he was fun either, he pulls jokes for 6 year olds.. Rampage on the other hand is fun and charismatic.. I hate it when Joe and Mike say “oh you have to love the guy” when he’s so annoying…
I think the UFC thinks Forrest is more popular and loved by the fans then he really is

by RoB on Jun 27, 2009 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Amir has acted the same since his first day on TUF. There are similarities between him and Forrest, but he’s not copying him at all.

by chefdaddy on Jun 27, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Forrest’s humor is just as funny as Rampage’s.

by Syn on Jun 27, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

John why so much hate for the guy who put mma on the map?

wrong silva in the title pic

by stuart on Jun 27, 2009 9:06 AM EDT reply actions

apparently then all look the same! haha. I like Forrest, so i wouldve preferred this Silva in the match-up. i think the Spider is going to ruin his night =\

by eightyproof on Jun 27, 2009 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

You guys have been slipping lately. Time to get your $#!* together. Spelling errors in the titles last week and now the picture of the wrong fighter. You also cut-and-paste post a lot. I’ll be reading a post and be thinking “Isn’t this word-for-word from like two weeks ago?” I’ll go back and sure enough you’ve simply cut-and-pasted a blog entry with maybe a new sentence tacked on the end and a new pic at the top for freshness. Damn, you’re running a professional blog. Act like it. Hire an editor or something.

At least a fight with this silva would have been competitive.

by NameNotRequired on Jun 27, 2009 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions

lol or maybe forrest should just go into the fetal position every time the spider tags him..this is why he is fighting him, he really does love to fight..will he win??..i dunno..but he will try his damnedest to put on a show and live just a little longer..wonder how silva will feel when forrest gets that grin on his face when he gets rocked..you gotta admire his heart..i see silva as a better fighter, but you have to admit forrest loves to battle.

by sarah on Jun 27, 2009 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Unfortunately Sarah, At Anderson’s level, heart is close to irrelevant. Anderson will injure him so that he can’t continue. Whenever Silva turns it up, it’s over. Forrest style has the worst chance of beating the champ than any other IMO.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 27, 2009 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Damn dude you just punched Sarah in the ovaries…so I guess it isn’t just a clever name then. Though I do agree with your assessment.

by Captain Ernesto on Jun 27, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

he should punch harder cuz i am done with babies.. and yeah i really don’t see forrest winner either..i just hope it lasts and the spider plays with his prey.

by sarah on Jun 27, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

lol

yeah, I was sympathizing with you though. I love Forrest. I just think this is a terrible matchup for him. He doesn’t really have KO power and he doesn’t take people down. So basically he’s going to throw shots until he finds himself sleeping. Anderson gets all day to do what he does best…counterstrike.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 27, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

NNR did you had the chance to see who are the competitors at the ADCC 2009 World Championship in September,Barcelona Spain?
If not a got them for ya…

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 27, 2009 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Send them my way. I know some of the big names and the superfights. I kinda wanna see lister-arona in match at absolute. Demian won’t defend his title either. I was hoping that maybe UFC gives hendo a crack at silva so that Demian has time to compete, you know after he subs Marqy. Anyone interesting from Europe?- I kept up with ADCC Brazil- few good guys, galvao isn’t competing though i don’t think even though he won the trials. Also I saw the ADCC japan trials a few months back, man megumi was clowning on fools really bad. Heard GSP wants to enter too. Hopefully he won’t get subbed as bad this time. Anyways, my post is getting carried away, but there are only one or two guys here i can discuss BJJ with.

by NameNotRequired on Jun 27, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

by Constant on Jun 27, 2009 9:08 AM EDT reply actions

definately think forrest will get hurt, he isnt fighting someone that he can beat like rampage, his leg kicks wont work, and he wont be able to take down anderson like he did to rampage and beat him up. this is anderson silva, and he is the man

by dtoto on Jun 27, 2009 9:09 AM EDT reply actions

I would rather see Forrest fight against the Silva in this picture. I was actually looking forward to that match!

by Insain on Jun 27, 2009 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

lol, how hard can it be to know who the right Silva is? the one dude is black and the other is white =)
Im pretty amazed by all these easy mistakes from people calling them the wrong names and stuff, It’s pretty embarrassing when Dana calls Thiago Alves, Thiago Silva!
have americans never heard brazilian names before or what’s up cause it’s not that easy to forget and mix up names and these guys have all been fighting for a while now in the UFC..

by RoB on Jun 27, 2009 9:32 AM EDT reply actions

Well . . . actually both have some degree of a “black” blood line. Obviously one closer to 100% than the other. Also, we are all about 14th cousins anyway – kinda like the Jesse James connection.

by Wild Wid West on Jun 27, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I’ve been talking really fast bout MMA to people and sometimes say Alves when I mean to say Silva. I know who both are, I just get ahead of myself and all that.

by Syn on Jun 27, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

forrest is just too huge for anderson silva, he’ll win

by AmsterdaMMA on Jun 27, 2009 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

Isn’t that what everyone said about James Irvin too?

by ---Caesar--- on Jun 27, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t see it. More and more, it’s about speed. Silva will have an enormous advantage speedwise. Also keep in mind Silva is vastly under-rated in the strength dept. Rich Franklin said it amazed him how strong Silva was in the clinch and with his grip. Franklin is not exactly weak. Forrest will be bigger than Silva for sure, but 205 pds. rested very easily on Silva’s frame when he fought Irvin. Silva looked very fit at the heavier weight. Being a Griffin fan, it pains me to say these things, but he’s got a tough hill to climb.

by CL on Jun 27, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

You mean his mouth?

by ducknow on Jun 27, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

God i hope Forrest beats him.

by Green Inferno on Jun 27, 2009 9:37 AM EDT reply actions

Forrest is selling himself short, although who wouldn’t be worried about getting killed against anderson? I really believe his best bet is to go for the takedown and work some gnp. these bigger guys need to use thier weight to their advantage. irvin should have picked silva up and slammed him a couple times. if/when forrest loses, i think the winner of rampage/rashad should take on silva. F marquardt and those other posers in the middleweight division.

anderson silva is gonna show off some new (dance) moves in this one. as a tribute to the late great michael jackson. he’ll be moonwalking and then when he finally gets bored he’ll decide to knock out forrest.

by remedy on Jun 27, 2009 9:53 AM EDT reply actions

Forrest will win this most definitely

by Jason on Jun 27, 2009 9:53 AM EDT reply actions

how so..i like forrest..but he does not exactly have KO power..his biggest strength is his heart..and i don’t know if that is enough for this one. his gnp is the thing i see helping him ..but..naw..the belt is safe with spider..dance moves and all.

by sarah on Jun 27, 2009 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Your right Sarah the belt is safe with A Silva b/c it’s not a title fight at 185.

How? He doesn’t have KO power, he’s been KO’d by weaker strikers, isn’t a great wrestler and doesn’t have as good a ground game as Andy. Having size, heart and being popular won’t be much use against a world class fighter like Andy, Silva by whatever he wants.

by David W-S on Jun 27, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t have much trust in a man which such a weak chin and such long recovery time from being rocked. His chin isn’t arlovski bad, but if you can get him rocked it’s over for him (See Rashad fight, he was clearly goofy the entire time on the ground).

I have Silva by TKO round 2.

It’s a shame some talented fighters just don’t have the chin.

by Ray Flaherty on Jun 27, 2009 9:58 AM EDT reply actions

Can Forrest Win? Sure he can, will Forrest win? Doubtful but there is always that little chance, I mean Matt Serra did knockout GSP. Everyone knows why this fight was made because everyone is scared of Silva but Forrest isn’t scared but too bad he is white and we all know what Silva does to white boys. KTTFO

Michael David Smith conducted an email interview with Aoki and asked him about it. Apparently the question didn’t sit well with Aoki:

“It is nothing to do with my grappling skills,” Aoki replied. “Anybody who has experience of grappling should know about this. This questions seems for non professional.”

Huh? Michael David Smith nails the correct afterwards though:

Aoki is free to call my question “non professional” all he wants, but the fact remains that it’s a common question — those pants provide traction, and there’s no one in MMA who relies on getting a strong grip with his legs more than Aoki does. He’d be a talented submission specialist no matter what he was wearing, but some of his submissions (including the heel hook that got Eddie Alvarez to tap in the above video) would be harder to pull off if he were wearing shorts.

The question had to be translated via a DREAM PR person, so there’s no telling what they actually asked Aoki. I mean it would be very easy to change the connotation of the question which would cause Aoki to answer the way he did. Regardless, if he ever does fight without the ‘magic’ pants we’ll know once and for all what’s up with him and the pants. My guess is that if he came to the UFC and faced any of those lightweights that have a strong wrestling base(which is almost all of them), he would get smashed up against the cage. Let me be clear and say that I’m all for him being able to wear them. I think they should be made legal, since guys are wearing big knee and ankle braces(which give traction) anyways. Are you for or against the pants?

by jace on Jun 27, 2009 10:57 AM EDT reply actions

by yuk dog on Jun 27, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

you guys are nuts. if griffin shows up mentally like he did for the rua fight. he will dominate silva. remember griffin is a big 205er. griffin was also beating rashad in the standup unti he got taken down. ill take griffin in any area of this fight. trust me griffin does not plan on loosing to this guy hes only crackin funnies. hes coming to fight. hes trained his ass off and he will get the win.

by day1er on Jun 27, 2009 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

Forrest isn’t good enough to beat Andy, sure he’s big but Silva is a huge MW and proved in the Irvin fight that size isn’t an issue for him at 205. Fair enough Forrest beat Shogun but Rua was far from his best at that fight, Andy is coming in focused and ready to silence the critics, Forrest will play right into his gameplan and get destroyed standing.

by David W-S on Jun 27, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

anderson silva is a counter striker guys and he doesnt have the benefit of the doubt being the champion anymore. This could be a very tactical point scoring boring fight. And the way forest sounds he might be extra careful. Everyone thinks forrest is going to go in there swinging. I dont think so.

by desperus on Jun 27, 2009 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

Griffen will get caught just as he did against Jardine. Anderson is a deadly puncher as we all know, and posses KO power as we all saw against Irvin. It will be a great fight, but it will end in dramatic fashion with Silva’s arm raised. As strong as Forrest will come in, The Spider’s terror is far from over. A similar, faster, comparable fighter like GSP will take hime out

by Christafo on Jun 27, 2009 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

Forrest Griffin upset! Then he will move back up the ranks to face Machida after he gets finished destroying Rua.

by Florian's Bitch on Jun 27, 2009 2:16 PM EDT reply actions

I would like to think that Forrest will win… I hope anyway.

KO power, hmmmm I dont know about that anyone can ko anyone anytime. I think this is gonna be more balanced than everyone is giving forrest credit for.

Forrest is smart, he will have a good starting game plan thanks to Randy C.

Yes Forrest is alittle bit less of a puncher but if he just keeps laying on his back or backing up he will drive anderson crazy.

Anderson lost to Ryo Chonnen guys hes was not that good, now hes in the UFC and he got lucky vs Dan Hendo. You dont see Andreson calling out Chuck (which would have been a good fight too) or Machida.

Everyone is acting like Anderson is a top LHW… Rampage, Machida, Rashad would all smash him. Then toss on any WW like BJ, GSP, Alves, Fitch, Kos. Lets not forget his own division KANG, AKIYAMA, COTE, BISPING (URGGH). Lots of fights for him to prove hes wicked.

I am just not sold on him, when he wont take on someone thats good on the ground cause he MIGHT lose.

What next can he beat MIR, NOG, KONGO, Lesnar… People need to take a break and get off the anderson silva bandwagon.

I hope he is on the receiving end of a 3 round barn burner so we see what happens after repeatedly getting smashed does to him.

Mann im stoked for this fight i think forrest is gunna just come out and brawl anderson wont be able to dance around the cage like he has previously forrest i think will control the pace of the fight i really cannot call this fight because it is really reminding me of the shogun-forrest brawl.
