Yep, right or wrong, like it or not boxing is still more mainstream at the highest level and he has had an awsome year.

very true Nick J…and after the kind of year Paquiao had, I dont even blame them!

Better fighters = Machida & Silva. Better boxers = Pac and Mosley.
by PW on Jun 26, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Are Machida and Silva really better “fighters”? Who would you want watching your back in a bar room brawl, it’d be Pac-man every time for me! By the time Machida and AS had finished prancing around the cops would have arrived and arrested everyone involved without those two throwing a punch! At least Pac-man would get stuck in!
by attakdog on Jun 26, 2009 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Do you really think Machida and Silva would dance around some nitwit in a bar with a popped collar and a barbed wire tattoo around his bicep? Because that’s the kind of dude who starts bar fights. Either one of those guys would knock that douchebag out six times before the cops showed up.

I would like to have Brett Rogers and Rampage with me in a bar room brawl… Manny Paqcuiao is too small ;P
there are no weight classes on the streets

Clearly my remarks were tongue in cheek! What I objected to was Pac-man and moseley not being referred to as “fighters”, so I used the bar brawl as a comic scenario to emphasise my point! Clearly they are all fighters as they all compete in combat sports.
So many people on this topic are trying to turn it into a debate about which is best, boxing or MMA, when that’s not what the artice is about. The article is about who has acheived the most in their respective combat sports discipline this year and that is clearly Pac-Man!

In a street fight any MMA fighter would kill a boxer

Robert-
Could Kalib Starnes kill Roy Jones? You’re clearly unbiased and I’m sure that I can trust your solid opinion since you’ve obviously taken so much into account here, as evidenced by your impossibly brilliant analysis. Only curious.
Ignorant.

I’m going to have to go with Pacquiao, by a mile. Silva in a distant second because he accomplished a lot in the past year, but not on the level of Pacquiao. Then Machida who stepped it up big time in the last year, followed by Mosely who’s fought only twice in the past year and lost his fight prior to those.
by clayton on Jun 26, 2009 3:07 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What has Silva accompished in the last year? I can think of two lackluster perfomances against overmatch opponants!
If anyone in MMA deserves the crown its Machida or GSP.
by Nick J on Jun 26, 2009 6:26 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Manny had a great year, and will win. In a bar fight I would want help from Machida. Then again, I may choose Manny, because I can always grab his ankles and swing him like a bat at the other people.

id go with machida, he would kill pac- man in a real fight, either standing, or on the ground. boxing isnt real life.
by dtoto on Jun 26, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What and triangle chokes and kimura’s are real life??? Not to mention he outweighs pac-man by 70lbs! Crazy statements.

This proves something I have been arguing ad nauseum about with several distinguished posters on this board: the fact that Machida is becoming a big name in MMA and a fighter who will be very visible in the UFC’s marketing strategy. Anyone who thinks Rashad/Rampage would sell more PPVs than Rampage/Machida is sniffing glue.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 26, 2009 3:16 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Who would you rather see fight Rampage if you’re a casual MMA fan… a former champion? Or the undefeated current champion, whom everyone is talking about, that just completely destroyed that former champion? Seems like a no-brainer to me.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 26, 2009 5:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rashad versus Rampage would sell to more people. Machida might be the champ but he is not a big draw like Rampage, Liddel, Lesnar, GSP, Forrest Griffen, etc..
If you put Machida in the main event of a pay per view (which Dana White will have to since he is the champ), you better put a damn good co-main event or UFC will lack the buy rates they want.
Don’t get me wrong. Machida is a great fighter but I wouldn’t pay to see him unless there’s a VERY strong undercard on that pay per view.
by ProKev on Jun 26, 2009 5:56 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That glue is a big seller because i’m on it too!
Hype sells fights, it always has and always will. Take the Shamrock/Tito trilogy for example, irrelevent fights but huge numbers.
I would prefer to watch Machida vs Rampage over the Rashad fight but i am not a casual fan, like most of the other posters on this site.

iM ACTUALLY REALLY HAPPY WITH THE CURRENT MATCH UPS:
sHOGUN VS. mACHIDA
rASHAD VS. rAMPAGE
I think stylistically, those are the best match ups involving those 4 top fighters!
btw, I hread that UFC 98 pulled in pretty good numbers!
by JOhn G on Jun 26, 2009 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree…these are the best matchups right now and it’s basically a mini tournament in the division. The winner of Rashad/Jackson will more than likely get the winner of Shogun/Machida. I know some people may not say Rashad deserves a shot if he beats Page but they were going to give Page a title shot right after Silva so it’s possible. Tournaments are awesome for MMA and I’d love to see the UFC implement a big one some day cause that would be sick. The only hitch in this tournament would be if Forrest somehow beats Anderson…then you’d have to consider giving him a title shot…luckily…Forrest is just shark bait.
Rashad/Quinton is going to generate a massive amount of ratings…espcially after the TUF show…it’s going to have an insane amount of hype behind it and may break some PPV records.
by Buster Bluth on Jun 26, 2009 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
only thing i do at home must be sniffing glue, sure Machida is a recognized fighter cause he’s the champ, and the UFC has gotten so big now so that most people will know what’s up, but Machida does not sell on his own it’d be his opponent Rampage that takes care of that, and when Rampage fights Rashad they both do it, and it’s hyped up by a whole season on TUF!
If they thought Machida vs Rampage would do better than Rashad/Page then we would seen Machida on the show!
by RoB on Jun 26, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jeremy that’d be a no-brainer for me too, Rampage every day of the week! are u playing that who’s best card again? I won’t watch somebody that i’m not interested of one bit just cause he’s good… I watch my boys, the people that i like fight because i care about them and i like to see them do well!
by RoB on Jun 26, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Double J, I’m with you all the way! I cant believe how many people would prefer to see Rampage take on Rashad? Is it coz you think he’d be embarassed and lose badly against Machida?
I wouldn’t pay a dime to watch Rampage rolling on the ground with Rashad for 3 rounds in a fake TUF hyped grudge match, but I’d sure as hell pay to watch Rampage try and find that chink in the seemingly invincible Machida’s armour, especially with the UFC LHW belt on the line!
by attakdog on Jun 26, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I want to see the best fighters in the main event and right now Machida is the best LHW in MMA, nobody has been able to do anything against him (save a last ditch triangle by Tito) and he has walked through every fighter that has been put in front of him. Rampage-Rashad will be a fun fight but seeing how Machida destroyed Rashad I’d take Lyoto-Rampage any day. Lyoto-Shogun should be a great fight, depending on what condition Shogun turns up in.
For this poll, Pacman has to win he had an unbelievable year and destroyed two bigger guys in Hatton and DLH. He is the best p4p boxer and deserves every award that he gets. Mosely’s a good fighter but not the best while Andy didn’t have his best year, although he doesn’t deserve all of the criticism that he has received. In a fair poll Machida would be 2nd to Pacman, as he was this years breakout fighter in MMA. Fedor should also be in the poll but once again he is ignored by the mainstream despite being the greatest fighter in MMA history.
by David W-S on Jun 26, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree dave that Fedor should be in there too, maybe he would have been had Ray Mercer and Brett Rogers not made his respective opponents look rather stupid. Also GSP who’s had better victories than AS this year.
by attakdog on Jun 26, 2009 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The fall of Sylvia and Arlovski to me shows what happens when you face Fedor, he broke both of them mentally. AA in particular has always been poor at recovering from defeats.
GSP does deserve to be mentioned, a win over Alves and he would be in the top 2 p4p fighters. After Alves, I don’t see who in the WW division can give him a competetive fight.
by David W-S on Jun 26, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I dont get how Fedor and GSP werent included. WE can also say the same thing about Mike Brown and Miguel, but the WEC is unfortunatley not as popular as the UFC.
by John G on Jun 26, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree Dave. Who is next for GSP? Kampmann?? Swick?? Cannon Fodder! The thing is with GSP he mutilates his opponents in such a one sided fashion, there’s never any public appetite for rematches.
by attakdog on Jun 26, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Correct double j!
I do however think he will struggle to sell PPV’s without a big name like Rampage next to him due to his evasive style which many people consider cowardly.
by attakdog on Jun 26, 2009 4:12 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
hahaha! machida wont sell many ppvs if he is up against a no named fighter…even if he drinks a gallon of piss before the fight..
by gaara on Jun 26, 2009 4:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
At less Machida will still have his brain in one piece (fully functioning) after he retired…MMA doesn’t even paid that much $$$$ compare to other sports and people are excepting fighters to get their head bash in so they can have a bit of excitement!!! or call in an “entertaining fights” that’s BULL shit..Machida fight smart, why stand there and let your opponent hit you? WHY…He block or he moves away what wrong with that…
I just don’t understand the way people thinks, this is the same reason why we’re still in WAR!!! in today world.. that’s pretty SAD.

Did you watch Mosley/Margarito, K-Dog?
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 26, 2009 4:21 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I didn’t, but I did see Pac-Man vs Hatton and DLH, and beating those guys despite being several weight classes below them is an incredible achievment and tops anything Moseley’s ever done. Margarito is a great fighter, but him and Moseley are similar in weight, whereas Pac-man’s opponents as of late haven’t been.
Maybe AS and Machida are not “certainly” better than Moseley, that’s just my opinion, my boxing knowledge isn’t as good as yours JJ, I was just going on their total dominance of all before them, especially AS who’s fought at two different weights.

Pacman will take this one. But I think pacman will lose to Mosely if they fight. He’s too fast. BTW I’m a Filipino.
by ryan on Jun 26, 2009 4:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Pac-man is way faster than Mosley. If Mosley has an advantage, it’s size.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 26, 2009 4:42 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Your right JJ but. Pacman may be faster, but not too distant from Mosely. I also think his main advantage is his counterfighting style which has been pacman’s weakness.
Also, comparing mma fighters to boxers isn’t a good way of knowing which is the better fighter.
by ryan on Jun 26, 2009 5:15 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
boxing is punching, mma is fighting… unfair poll. pacman by landslide.
by mmamma on Jun 26, 2009 5:27 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This comparision its stupid. Its apples and oranges. Still if i have to choose who is the pure fighter boxing wise would be Paquio, and Spider is the best mma fighter after Fedor and Gsp of course.
by dkortez on Jun 26, 2009 5:33 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
actually comparing these fighters to pacman is a mortal sin…im not a huge pacquiao fan but cmon…who has machida beat not boringly? thiago? rashad? its a no brainer that this two hasn’t fought any real competition yet that’s why they are unbeaten..and by the way silva? u dare comparing a dancer to a pure fighter? shame!! i see the world in mma but don’t push it too hard…

Sorry, have I missed something here? Why the hell are Boxers and MMA Fighters being compared in the same category? It makes no sense whatsoever. Lets throw a couple of Tennis players in there to make it more interesting. Boxing and MMA are two separate sports. Most MMA fighters have inferior boxing skills because they train so many different disciplines, however most boxers would get murdered if they tried to compete in the cage. Keep the two separate, I’d rather compare apples with apples.
by oskarbravo on Jun 26, 2009 7:08 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
They’re being compared coz they’re both Combat Sports! It’s like when awards go to the “Athlete of the year” when people have to pick the achievments of a 100m sprinter over someone who runs the marathon. Two totally different sports, but both Athletics events.
Nobody’s disputing “most boxers would get murdered if they tried to compete in the cage”. Everyone knows this, just like most MMA stars would get murdered if they tried to compete in the boxing ring.

1st of fedor n gsp should be in the nominees. That aside why do u ppl think shogun machida is a good fight? I don’t like machida cause he has no personality but fight skill wise? He is gonna massacre shogun! Like absolutely kill him. What a horrid match. This isn’t shogun of old. Sorry! He beat chuck? He beat Coleman? Oh! I didn’t kno! Well nm then he is golden! The belt is his! Oh and rashad rampage is a way bigger draw and no I’m not a newbi but I do kno entertainment when I see it. Listen to the pre fight conferences for dragon n shogun. If u,ll be able to stay up. That will lead lil excitement to the fight. Now love em or hate em. Think bout what were in 4 when we start hearing evans and rampage talk? Ha ha. Yay! Shogun loses by a mile. Fedor n gsp n Silva best in mma, shogun=no cardio, Jones= future. Go ufc! Lol ummm lashley by boredom over sapp tonight. But go sapp in 1st minute til he is tired anyways!

Shogun looked phenom against Chuck. Machida will not “kill” Shogun if Rua he comes in looking like he did in his last fight. If you base your opinion of Shogun on his fights against Forrest and Coleman, you must have started watching MMA pretty recently.
I’m no fan of Machida, but this fight is going to surprise people on the excitement level. Shogun will beat Machida. Shogun has all the tools to beat Machida….watch and see.
“Jones = future?” The fucking guy beats Stephan Boner by decision and you’ve labelled him as the “future”? He has potential, but that’s a little obsurd.

Actually INTROVERT I have been watching 4ever. Long enough to kno that u listen to Dana too much. Shoguns last performance was phenom? Ha ha ha. He beat chuck. In the 1st round. We didn’t have time to see him gas. That fight to serve any relevance would have to have occurred 2 years ago. Wow he beat chuck! Have u just started watching n only knew chucks rep? Cause he hasn’t faired too well in his last few outings to say the least. Thanks for showing ur ignorance tho. And ya I have the balls to say what u will say in 1 year. Bones is the truth. And enough With the Vera comparisons for Jones. Vera screwed it up himself. Oh and shogun beating machida? Wow! U really are hugging those nuts hard hey? Keep ur chin tucked and ur cardio tuckered shogun. Lol. 0% chance. And ill come back on ASAP and take my medicine if I’m proved wrong, but if shogun wins? I’m sure the 2nd coming of Christ isn’t far behind. The most undeserved #“2” contender: shogun. Pfft.

Pacman all the way.
There should be a two categories for boxing and MMA to save the boxing vs MMA debates. Kind of goes to show you that MMA isn’t as mainstream as some people may think.
Since there is only one “fighting” category, I have to go with Manny based on longevity, and performance over top-notch competition. The guy is on top of boxing right now and doesn’t look like he can be stopped…can’t really say that about Machida and Silva.
Funny how ESPN doesn’t have Fedor on the list……wonder if their deal with the UFC has anything to do with it. Although, I’d still pick Manny.
by introvert on Jun 26, 2009 10:53 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I’d agree with that, because of Silva’s last two performances. If he would have actually fought Cote and Leites, then it would probably be Pacquiao > Silva > Machida > Mosley.
Who would have that a year ago that the majority of MMA fans would be saying Machida is worthy of an honor over Silva? What a difference a year makes.
