MMA Quick Quote: WEC champ Jamie Varner is still in the ICU

"I just got out of the docs and (the) hand is still fractured. I’m really upset, I thought I was ready, my hand doesn’t even hurt but the doc pulled the rug out from my feet."

-- WEC Lightweight champion Jamie Varner reveals via Twitter.com that he’s still not ready to return to action because of the hand he fractured during his five-round war with Donald Cerrone, which took place at WEC 38 in late January. That's almost five months and his injury is still not healed. Talk about a bad break, which will more than likely encourage Cerrone to continue saying that Varner is suffering from a case of the runs and not a broken hand. Rather than waiting for the "Worm" to be ready for an instant rematch, "Cowboy" most recently blasted rising prospect James Krause at WEC 41. After the fight he lobbied for a rematch with Varner and a second crack at the gold -- a request that was granted by WEC founder and general manager, Reed Harris. However, it looks like Cerrone (and the fans) will have to keep waiting ... unless an interim 155-pound title match is booked in the meantime.

I doubt Varner is ducking him, its not like he can get out of this fight, it’s inevitable if he wants to retain the WEC belt. I will say that whenever it happens I will be rooting for Cowboy 100% as I can’t stand Varner.

well said. Yeah from the first fight "cowboy "was doing great, too bad about the illegal knee, which in my opinion didnt look that bad. I can’t stand Varner either, something about his attitude that just doesnt fit with being a fighter.

It’s the way he carries himself; just ONE example that sticks out in my mind, there was a 155 lbs fight in the UFC he won and afterward he did the worm, then some wierd chicken dance, then started brushing his shoulders off. At which point, as a fan, I instantly went to thinking about how much I’d enjoy watching someone kick the crap out of the guy. I understand the post fight celebration and being excited about a big win, but that was over the top imo.

He also thinks he’s a lot better than he really is; I know exactly why he quit the UFC LW division for the WEC, it’s cause he knew he wouldn’t ever break into the top 10 in the UFC LW division.

He comes off like a………….Prick!!! I can’t stand varner either, and I will not use capitols for his name as I have no respect for him………

Does anyone know how he’s recovering from his hysterectomy?

by PW on Jun 24, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

You dudes need to keep in mind that Varner was suffering from multiple injuries in that fight, and I’m not just referring to his hand and foot; apparently he sustained some serious vaginal bruising early in the second round.

by Jeremyjackson on Jun 24, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL!Good one PW!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 24, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I heard he was at the beach the day of the fight and got a lot of sand in his vagina. The doctors say it’s so deep and that is why it is taking so long to get it out.

by Dragon on Jun 24, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

lol yeah he had gone to the beach the day before and got some sand in his vag. in all seriousness…i liked varner up until he stopped the cowboy fight. no joke, ive taken what seemed like harder knees to the face in training and kept on sparring. i could understand if cowboy drilled him in the eye and he couldnt see, but from the replay it looked like the knee grazed the side of his head. and i dont think he’s ducking cowoby right now, but i really cant wait for the 2nd fight so cerrone can end it with a thai kick to the face!

by Andrew on Jun 24, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

it was pretty clear after the third round he was looking for a way out of the fight while still keeping his belt, to his credit he was winning the fight but, he was running and on the verge of getting finished. bottom line is, if you go in to a fight and leave with broken hands feet and can’t see out of one eye, while the other dude is just cut and a little bruised, you lost. Maybe he didn’t lose on the score cards, but he did lose the fight plain and simple.

Lol Blazy, thats a good way to look at it.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 24, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

he might not be ducking him but hes still a biiiatch!

by brendan on Jun 24, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

no, he is definitely ducking him. Varner is hoping that by pulling out of the fight cerrone will be impatient and fight someone else to stay active. this time it will be the last fight on cerrone’s contract and he’ll move up to the UFC afterwards. once that happens varner is therefore able to hold onto his title by repeatedly ducking the #1 contender. and the rematch will never take place since varner will most likely never make it back up to the UFC.

VARNER IS A PUNK!!! He wears his boxers backwards! I really hope Cowboy destroys his little punk @$$!!!!!!

by LJ on Jun 24, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah no doubt, i mean what kind of champ calls a time-out in the middle of the fight.

by the_Cannibal on Jun 24, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Love the picture of him calling for time-out!!! What a douche!! I hopr the cowboy murders this joke!!

by Dragon on Jun 24, 2009 4:17 PM EDT reply actions

it’s a good thing you made that correction, I had no idea what you were trying to say. whew, thanks.

by jj on Jun 24, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Cowboy needs to move up to the UFC anyway.

by Ertz on Jun 24, 2009 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

This is the longest a thread has gone without someone sticking up for him~!!~

by What? on Jun 24, 2009 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

I rarely see even 1 post in a Varner thread that has anything positive about him written in it.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 24, 2009 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but people were even sticking up for Kalib Stearnes… No one likes Varner. This is the funniest thread I have ever read. Also I hope the 103 rumors are true. I want to see Chucks retirement fight and Hughes’ retirement fight

by Patrick Cote on Jun 24, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s impossible to like.

by JTD on Jun 24, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s a talented fighter but man is he tough to root for.

by JTD on Jun 24, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure if this has been discussed yet, I’m very busy at work and haven’t had much time for MMA talk, BUT:

Fight Rumor***

I’m hearing Liddell/Franklin and Swick/Hughes likely for 103. If Swick wins he’s next up for a WW title shot. I’m still hoping Velazquez/Carwin happens @ 104.

Peace out for now, Maniacs.

by Jeremyjackson on Jun 24, 2009 4:20 PM EDT reply actions

You know, Liddell/Franklin doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me at all. But if Rich KO’s Chuck, omg that will be so sad to see.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 24, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d have to root for Chuck, just for old times sake, which sucks cause I’m normally rooting for Rich in all of his fights; but this would make two in a row where I’m hoping Ace takes a loss. :(

by O damn he got caught on Jun 24, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

For the Velasquez/Carwin fight…Carwin said that he didn’t heard any news about this fight!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 24, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

YES!! JJ I hope you are right. I’ve been clamoring for a Liddell/Franklin match for a while now. I think it would be a great fight for both guys. I think the win would do more for Franklin, since Chuck is on his last limbs here, and the win over Wandy just gave Rich some big momentum. I think Rich could get a TKO here.

Swick-Hughes is not something I’m too interested in, but I’m always rooting for Matt Hughes. If Matt can take Swick down to a dominant position, then I think Matt has the ability to submit him. But chances are Swick will finish with a TKO before the 3rd round.

I wouldn’t mind seeing either fight. I hope you are right JJ.

by Syn on Jun 24, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL. A win over Hughes gets you a title shot.

by Adam T. on Jun 24, 2009 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL! No kidding. Hughes is no longer valid, but he seems like the gatekeeper to the title shot. First Thiago, now Swick? I wouldn’t want to go from fighting a washed up Hughes to a GSP in his prime!

by LJ on Jun 24, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Swick should get to fight someone in the top ten. Hughes is no longer relevant and wins over him shouldn’t determine top contenders. How about Swick vs Kapmann? or Swick vs Fitch?

by boz on Jun 24, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Couldn’t agree more boz. Hughes is not top ten in the UFC. And I love Mike Swick but WTF is up with him calling for a fight with hughes in his postfight interview at the last event. What is up with all this bullsh*t about “it would be an honor to fight him because he is a legend”???
Who cares what you did in the past. The only thing that matters is your abilities now. I don’t give a sh*t how big a legend you were.

by Adam T. on Jun 24, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

You know Adam, Swick was being super smart. Who else is an easier win that could get you a title shot. Touche Swick, I also enjoy watching Hughes get his dick kick in, but Swick shouldn’t get a title shot for beating a Legend who is no longer relevant in the WW weight class. Let him beat Hughes but than Have him fight Kapmann and only him for number one contender. I mean compare Swick last 3 opponents and Thiago’s last 3 wins, is not even close. Swick is 2 fights away from a title shot.

by dkortez on Jun 24, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Fitch is his teammate, they won’t fight unless Dana puts the hammer down and makes it happen. Kampann, not a bad idea though. Personally I can’t get enough of watching Matt Hughes lose, so I’m all for it.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 24, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to agree O Damn there aint much better than watching matt hughes get his face beat in!!!

by Dragon on Jun 24, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

And I really don’t care to see Kos, Fitch or Swick fight eachother, their so against the idea that even if they had to I can’t see either guys heart being in the fight.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 24, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

If Swick and Fitch keep winning and Kos gets back on the winning track they will fight each other, guaranteed. Swick even alluded to this in a recent interview, basically saying that when the time comes things would be taken care of. But I guess you’ll have to take my word on the interview because I don’t have any “proof”. It was in the last couple of weeks though.

by Adam T. on Jun 24, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

O get over it; like it’s my fault you wanna bring sh!t up without a leg to stand on.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 24, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

No worries. I enjoy making things up, good imagination.

by Adam T. on Jun 24, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Good fights, seeing how Swick won’t fight his AKA teammates and Hughes just beat Serra that fight makes sense to me. Hughes is a bigger name than Kampmann so a WW title fight between GSP/Alves-Swick would be marketable if Quick beats Hughes. Hughes may be past his best but he’s still an MMA legend and a dominant win over him would earn a title shot in my opinion.

Liddell-Franklin is another dream fight involving Ace, you’ve got to respect Rich for accepting fights because it’s what the fans want to see rather than to help his own chances at getting a title shot. Liddell’s chin and timing is gone so I don’t see Ace having too much trouble against Chuck, I hope Chuck retires if he puts up another poor performance because I don’t want to see him damage his body or his legacy.

by David W-S on Jun 24, 2009 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Let a real AZ fighter get Cerrone. Send Ben Henderson to fight him. Varner pisses sitting down.

by Tango87 on Jun 24, 2009 4:25 PM EDT reply actions

First, when did Hughes become the Welter weight title gate keeper. Second, I guess God does watch MMA and told Varner; “No more Time-Outs B**CH!”

Jamie Varginer

by LJ on Jun 24, 2009 4:46 PM EDT reply actions

Anyone else notice thats the picture from the razor rob fight where he called time out, he called TIME OUT, in the middle of a fight, i dont care if your mouth piece got knocked out of your mouth, you dont call time out.

by Dave on Jun 24, 2009 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

Varner needs to learn when to shut up, he’s a talented fighter and looked great against Cerrone but his attitude is dreadful. He could learn something from Urijah when it comes to dealing with a broken hand.

by David W-S on Jun 24, 2009 5:24 PM EDT reply actions

i looked it up on webmd, torn vaginas actually take a really long time to heal. cut him some slack.
