didnt get around to posting on the other thread about gsp/alves but i just gotta say this… everyone was saying that jon fitch was going to be gsp’s toughest test to date and he smashed him around the cage for 5 rounds, then everyone said bj penn will be his toughest test… wash, rinse, repeat… now everyone is saying the same thing about alves, but i see the same result… only thing alves has that fitch/penn don’t is knockout power, but he lacks the wrestling and jiu jitsu to stay on his feet, so its not going to matter! gsp via destruction, rd 3

brendan you are probably right Gsp looks pretty close to unstoppable as long as he can impose his take down and gnp game. Besides ko power though, alves is just as big and strong as gsp so holding him down may not be as easy as it was with fitch and bj.

possible, but size isnt as important as positioning and good use of your hips, size doesnt really come into play in wrestling unless the guy has like 25 pounds on you

Right again Brendan and MM_Eh. And don’t forget that GSP is able to mount and hold MW’s and Even some LHW’s at Jackson’s so there’s no amount of size in the WW division that can defend his wrestling, period.

Ovaries, I dont believe that for one second! Whoever is fighting is always said to be unstobbale by his teamates. I have a really hard time thinking that he was able to throw Rashad around n take him down…If thats the case, then Rashad should RETIRE because he will spend the entire fight on his back against Rampage.
Its all just a bunch of bS. With that said GSP is easily one of the best wrestlers in mma….HOWEVER, Alves has develpoed some of the best TD defense in the sport and has the size, power and strength to match GSP’s atheticsim and thats why this fight is really interesting to me..not to mention that alves comes from just as good of a camp, if not BETTER than GSP comes from and I dont think there is a fighter in the sport who has improved as much as Alves has in the past year.
People did say Fitch was GSP’s toughest test to date, and he probably was….and GSP BATTERED and dominated him. HOwever stylistically their is a big difference between GSP fighting Fitch, and gSP fighting alves because Fitch didnt really have any advantages over GSP….Alves DOES!!! He is easily the best welterweight striker in the UFC…and I cant see how GSP could be comfortable standing with Alves, when he wasnt confident enough to even stand with Serra. GSP has develpoed some really good jits, but nothing that Alves hasnt seen before. I think ATT is probably ahead of Greg Jackson’s camp in terms of ju jitsu. Alves has the luxury of training with some guys who are really jits wizards!
GSP is a favorite for a reason. He is one of the best p4p fighters on earth and the best ww the sport has seen to date…but I wont be the least bit surprised if Alves knocks his block off! Stylistically, I like the way Alves matches up with Georges.

I don’t know which LHW’s he’s held down and it is 2nd hand knowlege on my part. But I’m not talking about pre-fight hype. I have buddies who are friends with some of these guys who say he’s unbelievable.
Anyway, I agree that Alves has the power to knock his block off, but I think this will make it clear to GSP to not even feel out the stand up game.
Where I dont agree is that Alves’ takedown defense will be much defense at all or that his Jitz will be a threat to GSP. GSP’s wrestling/hip position is beyond good. It’s freakish.
The only way GSP loses is if he choosed to trade and get’s caught. It’s GSP’s to lose. I’m trusting he won’t fight stupid so I’m calling him a lock.

Actually, when they did that 3 part special with GSP and Penn, it showed Rashad coming in to train with GSP and they showed clips of them grappling. Two big things i noticed…..one….GSP is not much smaller then Rashad at all…and two…..Rashad was being taken down and was by no means outmuscling GSP at all.
Also lets remember, that GSP was invited to join the Canadian Olympic team, which means he must be pretty damn good at wrestling at this point. Sucks his UFC contract doesnt allow him to wrestle in the olympics, but oh well.

As everyone knows, I hate GSP (as much as some of you hate BJ). That said, he is easily the top 3 most dominant fighters out there today, and I respect that. He dictates where the fight goes and usually finishes it there. I’d love to see Alves kick his ass, but I don’t see it happening. If only some of you guys could respect fighters you don’t like for their accomplishments (bj).
By the way, the poster is gay…and probably hanging in Cote’s bed room!
