Alan Belcher: 'The UFC middleweight title is within reach'

Props: Wisconsin Combat Sports

Quoteworthy:

"There are a lot of guys that have lost to Anderson Silva. It pretty much leaves Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt. I think that if I win this fight in a dominating fashion, I deserve a fight for the top contender spot. The UFC has faith that I’m going to bring it. Every one of my fights has been real exciting and explosive. They feel I have the potential, and everyone is starting to feel that I’m getting in my groove. Also, Akiyama is a brawler, he likes to stand, and there is going to be some fireworks. The UFC title isn’t just a dream anymore. It’s starting to become within reach. I’m hoping within my next three fights to be battling for the belt. It’s something I’m really starting to take seriously."

Alan Belcher will look for his third consecutive win inside the Octagon when he takes on Japanese import Yoshihiro Akiyama in a middleweight tilt at UFC 100 on July 11. "The Talent" is coming off an impressive come-from-behind victory over Denis Kang at UFC 93 last January and is now 5-3 overall under the Zuffa banner. Does a dominating win over "Sexyama" put Belcher against a top middleweight contender? Or will the Duke Roufus-trained striker need to create a more consistent body of work? None of that really matters unless he can deport the 12-1 master Judoka waiting for him at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. Will he or won't he?

He’s even said before something like he’s the best striker in the UFC. WTF? He was getting schooled by Kang in the stand-up.

If Duke Roufus is your trainer, you’re ready!

by griffinfan05 on Jun 23, 2009 11:41 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This guy has shown some serious flashes of greatness on his feet with muay thai that looks extremely fine-tuned.

His submission win over Kang also goes along way in substantiating his well-roundedness, as far as I’m concerned any way.

I see Belcher at least being a menacing force in the UFC for a couple years.

by jammin on Jun 23, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have absolutely NO interest in seeing Silva wasting one of his remaining fights on Belcher.

He needs to wake up. At best he is at the back of the line behind: Maia, Nate, Hendo, Okami, Wandy, Pissping, and Thales.

by Cole on Jun 23, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is overrated. He got picked apart on his feet against Kang. Props for the choke but his striking has a lot of holes from an MMA stand point. He might round out the top 10 in the UFC but I would still pick Kang to beat him 9/10 times. He has a right to be confident. Plus if Dana gets Vitor to sign… forget it.

by BILLYCARNAGE on Jun 23, 2009 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don’t forget he was being dominated in his fight against Kang. Denis got tired and fell into the sub. Belcher is top 15 in the UFC that is it. He won’t go any higher than that.

anderson vs maia, marquardt, GSP, wanderlei, etc would all make the UFC so much more money.

alan belcher will not sell PPVs, even though i enjoy his fights. and thats what its all about, seems that way anyway.

by danburoojy on Jun 23, 2009 11:53 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

As he mentions, I think Belcher needs to win over a few more key opponents before he’s ready for anything. Recent defeats of Herman, Starnes, Kang and Salmon doesn’t cement this guy as a title contender in my opinion. Let’s see how he does against, Franklin, Henderson, Bisping, etc.

by Dugout on Jun 23, 2009 11:58 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Belcher should have lost that decision against Herman, Starnes is the biggest joke in UFC history and Salmon is not even top 50. Granted the win over Kang was impressive but Denis lost because of a daft mistake rather than Belcher showing real skill.

I’ve never like Belcher, the guy is deluded and has taken some beatings from guys that you could hardly call contenders. Anybody destroyed by Kendall Grove and Jason Day should never be mentioned in the same sentence as title shot.

None of this will matter when Sexyama destroys him anyway. Belcher’s 15 minutes are just about up and after 100, it’s back to prelim obscurity.

by David W-S on Jun 23, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well said David. Plain and simple Belcher sucks! Title shot…..what the f*ck is he smoking.

This guy must really love himself.

by Ca$z on Jun 23, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Belcher should just fight Sonnen in a battle between the 2 self proclaimed “TOp Fighters”.

I will admit that Belcher is entertaining to watch, but then again, so are all muy tai fighters…I have never seen him show the ability to be anything more then a gate keeper, or a guy used to build up TUF winners. Very inconsistent. For such a muy Tai ace, Kendall Grove handed him his ass! Im not really impressed with his win over Kang. Kang is a top fighter that usually destroys his opponents, makes a mental lapse and then finds a way to fall into a basic submission and lose inexplicably. The Kang/Belcher fight went according to the skript of Kangs career. nothing too surprising there although I did think Kang was going to crush him.

I dont even know why all this nonsense matters. Sexyama will bring him down back to earth!

Besides the Alves/GSP fight, Akiyama debut is the most exciting part of UFC 100..to me, that is!

by JOhn G on Jun 23, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Totally agree with all your comments. Am I wrong in that Belcher was calling for the belt after beating Kang? Belcher’s totally in love with himself.

Akiyama’s first name Yoshihiro!

Yoshihiro Akiyama not Yoshiyuki Akiyama

by sam on Jun 23, 2009 12:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let’s not forget his losses so quickly. He did finished by Jason Day, who was a flash in the pan. He also lost pretty badly to Kendall Grove. He should rematch Grove after he loses to Akiyama, who is just in another class.

by Ballam86 on Jun 23, 2009 12:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Confused is right! Close to a title shot, LOL. This guy lost to Jason Day, had to come from behind to beat Kang. Kang has hype but really has not beat anyone worth mentioning either. This must be a joke. No wonder Dana is thinking about bring back V. Belfort, if this guy is close to a title shot.

604Sambo,

You have been called out for misproper use of my phrase…

I am going to have to take you to task for using my (Truth tm) in such an irresponsible manner.

You use Truth when most people actually agree on a set of ideas or facts to be representative of reality.

For example, "Sexyama has a funny, porno-like name" = Truth

"WAR Sexyama" = Nut-huggery, not Truth

Use (Truth tm) with knowledge or don’t use it at all !

Have a nice day! ;)

He’s less worthless than Leites, that’s about it.

That actually means he is worth more….. So are you saying he is above Leites or below?

Good catch on the double negative. Do I hear a “could care less” out there? LOL.

Marquardt deserves the next title shot and this time he will get the belt.

Agreed!

The only belt Nate would get would be the one that they use to strap him onto the stretcher after AS tooled him for the second time. Unfortunately, he won’t get a shot, cause Maia will catch him in a slick sub. And I’m not a hater, I’m actually a big Nate fan.

WAR NATE “THE GREAT” MARQUARDT

by Jared on Jun 23, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nate ain’t getting past Maia, he’s a good fighter but isn’t in the same league on the ground and Maia will get another SOTN to his name before giving Andy his biggest challenge yet.

by David W-S on Jun 23, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no chance. nate is too big, too strong, too fast, too good on the feet, too much better at every other aspect imaginable than maia.

by JB on Jun 23, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nate is good but not that good, he’ll definitely be Maia’s biggest test but if this goes to the ground then Nate is done. Technique will prevail over strength.

by David W-S on Jun 23, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He can beat most of the newcomers, that’s for sure! There are probably more than 10 guys that can give this guy a beatdown.
 It’s too early Alan.

by Pamirec on Jun 23, 2009 12:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i like belcher hes very flashy but needs more exposure 2 fight 4 the belt. i would like if he fought silva bc ythe fight wouldnt go 2 the groun. belcher has a great chin and is mad good a muy tai also but in the end silva will come out on top bc belcher always drops his hands.

by Beast3000 on Jun 23, 2009 1:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I actually like this guy ..if he dominates this fight , and then has 2 more solid victories (over-Okami , miller, sonnen , leites, etc), then he is due for a shot. Not after this fight though. And he did beat Kang fair and square ..it doesnt really matter he was getting dominated . A win over a top opp. is a win.

by robbyc on Jun 23, 2009 1:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

alan facing for the title?..thats a joke right?

by jmartinee on Jun 23, 2009 1:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

hey belcher you forgot about okami you know the guy who beat you lol

by nelson on Jun 23, 2009 1:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow the guy said within his next 3 fights so he knows he has to fight at least 3 more times and yet people assume he means his next fight after akiyama.

Man i swear the Average MMA fan is half retarded, makes me ashamed to even tell other people i am a fan of this sport.

Alan is a very talented and young fighter, and he has some decent wins at MW. He is the last guy to beat Jorge Santiago who should be ranked as a top 5 MW, if he beats Akiyama as well than the skys the limit for him.

by Kelly on Jun 23, 2009 5:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Belcher is deluded for thinking he’ll ever get a shot period the guy has already been schooled by a couple of mediocre fighters in Grove and Day and is going to get destroyed by Sexyama. The guy was calling for a title shot after beating Kang, he is an absolute tool and once he takes a brutal beating at 100 I’m hoping that I never have to listen to his ridiculous boasting again.

by David W-S on Jun 23, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love how everyone just burns the guy for actually having aspirations to be a title contender – you all clearly no nothing about the mental state it takes to compete. So I suppose he should be saying – ‘you know what, i never deserve a shot, my Muay Thai isnt that great, and you know Im just a gatekeeper’ ????

Idiots.

I cant stand the guy as a person, and as a MMA fighter i dont think he is brilliant. However, there is not a thing wrong with what he said,

‘…if i win this fight in a dominating fashion…’ ‘…I’m hoping within my next three fights to be battling for the belt…’

he is essentially saying if i destroy this guy, i hope to fight some contenders, and with a few more wins maybe have a shot at the title. NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS. He isnt dellusional he beleives in himself, u got no where fighting if u dont.

by SiamMMA on Jun 23, 2009 10:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He’s actually pretty right on target with the 3 fight thing. If he wins 3 more, that would put his streak at 6 in the UFC, which definitely warrants a title shot. With most of the divisions cleaned out except for Heavyweight now, a 6 fight streak is pretty impressive. In his next 3 he should fight Sonnen or Almeida, then Marquardt / Maia loser, and finally a Bisping, Henderson, or Wanderlei. After that, if he’s still winning, he deserves a shot. Leites got a shot with much less impressiveness.

by RU486 on Jun 24, 2009 12:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

so u guys actually believe he can beat akiyama? now your the one’s who are being more delusional here
