UFC Quick Quote: Stephan Bonnar is not going to be an idiot on July 11

You can't just look at one fight from a guy and say, "I'm going to bank on him not showing up in shape." You just can't do that ... In that Shogun fight, (Mark Coleman) got tired -- so did Shogun -- and I think he'll work on that. He'll try to fix that for this fight ... You've got to prepare like he's going to be in the best shape of his life. He's fought in Pride in 10-minute rounds and been in shape before, so I'd be an idiot to just bank on him not going to show up in good shape.
The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season one light heavyweight finalist Stephan Bonnar tells USA Today that he won't make the mental mistakes he made during his lopsided unanimous decision loss to undefeated up-and-comer Jon Jones at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ last January. "The American Psycho" will attempt to put aging UFC veteran Mark Coleman into retirement at UFC 100 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 11. The question is, where does a win over "The Hammer" put Bonnar in a crowded UFC light heavyweight division?

I think I speak for everyone when I say WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THIS FIGHT! I mean honestly this fight must have been thrown together because they didn’t know what else to do with them. Mark Coleman needs to retire and Stephan Bonnar just needs to go away period.

What! are you serious!! bonnar/griffin 1 is the reason why late bloomers of the ufc started to watch
I’m kind excited for this fight.. they train at he same place which is kinda weird but yeah, i wish this one is televised.. how does wrestlemania play all their fake crap when we can’t see all our fights
cloeman will gas on the way to the 8-corners
bonnar by rear naked choke in the 2nd

Because Wrestlemania has everything timed down to the second and knows exactly how long all the promos, interviews and matches are. UFC could give you a 15-minute fight or a 30-second fight. I do think UFC could lose a lot of the between-fight promotional BS and move a little quicker to get the fights going.

i care very much about Stephan BOnnar. The guy has a ton of heart and guts, similar to Guida, except that he actually has some skills to back up the heart and grit. People shouldnt expect te same BOnnar that was tossed around like a ragdoll by on Jones. THat was stephan’s 1st figt back from a long lay off and knee surgery. Not enough people on this site take into account things like coming back from an injury, and cage rust. Those things really affact a fighters performance.
Not only is stephan a solid boxer, but I think he is a very under rated grappler. HIs jits is pretty damn good if you ask me…but I would say that his wrestling is his weak point.
actually expect BOnnar vs. Coleman to be an ok fight!

Bonnar’s skills are solid. His problem has been an overall lack of quickness and athleticism. Because of this, his length often works against him, as he can be taken down with relative ease. More and more, we are seeing better athletes in the sport doing well, and simply having solid skills isn’t enough. I’m a Bonnar fan and am pulling for him, but can definitely see a scenario where Coleman can give him trouble. Coleman could take Bonnar down, and as long as he comes in with some/any cardio, he could control Bonnar enough to get the win. If Bonnar can stay off his back, he should get the W.

I agree…Bonnar is underrated and I’ve always liked the guy. He’s been in some real wars and I expect him to steamroll the geezer and I hope he gets a fight with a guy like Franklin next cause that would be a solid match up but Bonnar might not be able to get that high profile of a fight unless he creams Coleman.

Looking forward to this fight, I can’t stand Coleman and have a lot of respect for Bonnar as a fighter and a personality. In his last fight Stephan was humbled and I hope he’s been working on his takedown defence since then as Coleman is a quality wrestler, even if at his age he is irrelevant in 2009. Stephan should be able to win this one because he’s the better striker and has better cardio though I’d be suprised if Coleman turns up in as lousy shape as he did for the Shogun fight.

This is the fight I look most forward to. I am a sucker for old-school UFC studs.

Id say “idiot” is still very much a possibility if you ask me.

Doesnt matter what happened before. Bonnar is a joke and needs to get a day job. Coleman needs to do steroids again and fight at heavyweight or retire.
Nough said.

im a sucker for the “legends” i get let down a lot, but i like when they get one last shot at glory and pull it off, it just gives me a good feeling, like when randy beat tim, and gonzaga, chuck beat wandy, etc. Bonnar isnt exactly known for finishing fights, so this is a good chance for coleman to work his legendary ground n pound.

Same here, Bonnar is like a striking version of Guida – never gets stopped, never gives up and keeps banging. He has skills, just never managed to string a decent run of wins together.
It’s like a “sliding doors”-esque what-if – what if he won that decision against Griffin? Would he be the face of UFC at 205? Would he be a serious contender? Griffin is hardly unbeaten but has also beaten some of the top guys. Bonnar has beaten Irvin and Jardine and only lost to Griffin, Machida and Jones (who is a very promising prospect). I’d like to continue to see him in the UFC over quite a few of the more favoured fighters like Hughes, Sherk and the other lay’n’pray wrestler types.

This fight is a waste…Jon Jones a 5 fight wins…schooled Bonner all the way 2 show how far hes progressed in a yr,, in what way has Bonner progressed…even Griffin has got more ability since TUF season 1

Bonnar puts on shows, usually gives the crowd what they want to watch. Hopefully he’s in the ufc to stay. Bonnar V Franklin after this would be nice. Or Bonnar V Vera – good scrap

Really disappointed in bonnars ufc career. He had all the tools to go far. I always thought he had better standup and submissions than griffin. If he only really worked on his wrestling and conditioning he could have been a title contender. Now he’s going to be relugated to being a gatekeeper in the division, which is sad b/c he could have been great. Hopefully he beats coleman and gets a few wins under his belt and possibly makes a run at something.

He just came back from a serious knee injury before the J. Jones fight. before that he was on the shelf for a roids suspension.

I find it strange how so many people are hating on Bonnar. Whether you like it or not, his fight with Forrest helped make the sport what it is today. I honestly think he should be paid for life for that fight, the spark that started a fire.

I am glad to see Bonnar is a part of UFC 100.

LMAO, Coleman’s been trying to fix his cardio for 12 years, it aint happening!

I hate it when people pretend luck is not a factor. While fighters do have to suck it up because no one is interested in excuses, it’s another matter entirely if you’re taking an objective look at MMA from the outside – then it quickly becomes obvious that some fighters have been more fortunate than others.
On one side of the spectrum you have guys like Rashad Evans and Forrest Griffin – on the other, ones like Stephan Bonnar and Keith Jardine.
What would the division be like if Rashad Evans ended up on the wrong side of his multiple split decisions? What if Herb Dean hadn’t been on his period and was a little slower to deduct a point from Tito Ortiz? What would Keith Jardine’s career be like if he wasn’t just a pretty good fighter, but actually looked good while fighting, or could mug for the interviewers like Forrest Griffin? Or if he didn’t take Houston Alexander so lightly, and finished him when he had the chance instead of getting sloppy and getting caught?
Ah well, coulda woulda shoulda…

Bonnar is smart. and i dont think Coleman is sitting on the couch and work on nothing. i mean i laugh at him lately for comments like “i think i can beat machida” but this is Coleman and we all cheered for him back in the day so why look past him now. but i know what people are thinking, he is close pulling a “Shamrock” on mma

WOW..I surprised at all the Bonnar hate, I kind of like him and hope he wins

I like both of these guys. Coleman is a huge dog in this fight…I might take a flier on him. Bonnar showed me absolutely nothing against Jon Jones.

A Little off subject but why does ShoGun get a shot at the title? All he has done is beat Coleman who in my opinion could have and should have taken him out him. and Chuck who Dana wants to retire because lately everyone is beating him. Seems to me there are more deserving guys.
