UFC Quick Quote: Diego Sanchez has 'tremendous respect' for Clay Guida and his many hearts

"I've got tremendous respect for Clay after tonight because I haven't been in a blood barnburner like that since Nick Diaz and you know, I hit him with some knees, some kicks and some uppercuts that were right on the button and he just kept on coming. I was surprised, the guy's got heart. He's got a couple of hearts because he kept coming in the striking too even though I was landing the more effective strikes and picking my shots. He's a little Tasmanian Devil to take on. He was in a position to fight me for a reason: He earned his shot with wins against Danzig and Diaz. He put himself in that place but I was just the more technical fighter that executed the gameplan right. I went in there and was 'The Nightmare.'"
UFC lightweight contender Diego Sanchez comments at The Ultimate Finale 9 post fight press conference on his three round war with Clay Guida at the June 20 Spike TV event from "The Pearl" at the Palms Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. "Nightmare" took home a split decision and the right to challenge the winner of BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian at UFC 101, but not before getting a taste of the irresistible force that is "The Carpenter." We now know where Sanchez goes from here, but what about Guida?

very good fight, not sure about fight of the year. If diego was able to sweep or get back up of there was a bunch of transition work I’d say yes no doubt, but Diego controlled the fight on the feet, Guida smothered him for the most part on the gound. Not too much back and forth. Diego would have had to be in danger at some point. If Guida hurt Diego with a punch, or had him in a submission at some point then you could make that argument

no fight of the year but round 1 was amazing to watch!
i thought sanchez was goin to finish him and when he hit him with the head kick i just screamed out ‘oooohhhhhhhh’ joe rogan style
great fight not sure how guida won on 1 of the judges scorecards?!?

Maybe because the judges attempt to be impartial.

sure but they should also attempt to be right

how a judge could a)not give the first round a 10-8 and b) think that round 3 was won by Clay amazes me. Pretty sure it was the female judge aswell.

Diego looked simply amazing, and Im not really much of a Diego fan. I love watching him fight but couldnt care less if he wins or lose, unless I got money riding on him.
I thought is performance was terrific, and I was amazed to hear that he is still stuggling with the weight cut. Once he gets comfortable with the weight cut he will b e even scarier!
I think BJ vs. Diego owuld be an amazing figt. Diego vs. Ken flo as well!
I still want to see Diego vs. Sherk or Tyson!

Fight of the year so far. We’ll see about the rest. Is only June.

i gotta admit i’m a huge diego fan, but honestly, anyone saying that clay got robbed doesn’t know what they are talking about…should have been UD for sure, that first round was like 10-5
anyways, i say give diego the title shot and have edgar vs maynard 2, i still don’t see them as high up as diego and there is no one else close to challenging for the belt

Fight of the year is Faber-Brown 2. Sanchez vs Guida is one of them. Maybe no.2. But I dont´know why one of referes had on score card win for Guida. Itś joke………..

So you wasn’t entertained then?. People really do need to look at what Diego brings to the Octogan, and try to seperate that from his wacky personality. MMA is about fighting which is what Diego is good at. You don’t have to go out on a date with him, so just sit back and enjoy the fights.

I was entertained but sometimes you just dislike a fighter..

Why isn’t anyone talking about Diego and his title fight?
Does he have the hands and BJJ for either BJ or Ken?
Diego’s boxing looks good but not top shelf. BJ’s boxing is very good and Kenny is a technician and will throw elbows into the mix.
Also, Diego is relying on his improved standup…What about the GNP Diego was known for? He’d put people on their backs and go to town. Now, he’d rather trade standing.
Last, Clay proved last night that Diego is in trouble when he is on the back. Sure, he threw some elbows but Kenny and BJ are top BJJ guys.

I agree with most of what you are saying but it was a miracle Guida survived round 1. I have a lot more respect for Guida now, he took a rocking and kept on tocking. Some interesting fights on the horizon for sure.

No miracle. The guy can take a beating.

i dont think diego is taking the weight cut very well, the same happened in his fight against joe stevenson. Both joe and clay got the better of the standup in the third round and you can tell diego had gotten pretty gassed. i hope he can he can cope in his next fight.

Very good point. Personally, I don’t think decision wins over Joe Daddy and Guida should propell Diego to a title shot. I believe he needs to win another fight vs a top 5 guy in the division. I also hope Diego is for real as a LW, but think there are still unanswered questions.

whoever thinks this was fight of the year needs to check out the gurgel – huen strikeforce fight from friday night, granted the first round was like watching a couple of pit bulls getting let off their chains, but the 2nd & 3rd was the same old guida dry hump
