Mike Swick ready to test himself against the best the UFC has to offer (Exclusive)

Going into his fight with Ben Saunders at UFC 99: "The Comeback" on June 13, Mike Swick was looking to make a statement. "Quick" wasn’t looking past "Killa-B" by any stretch of the imagination, but he wanted people to know that he was here to stay and that he was very much a real threat to any contender in the welterweight division.
Mission accomplished.
With another win in the books and an outstanding 9-1 record in the UFC, Swick can now begin to look ahead in his quest for welterweight supremacy. Swick himself is the first to admit that he needs to work on his game and defeat some higher level opponents -- but also doesn't diminish the toughness of Saunders.
"He came at me the way I expected, I was a little thrown off by the way he held me on the ground for the majority of the first round. With that being said he has a bright future, he is a tough dude and he will be around here for a long time."
Swick's place in the welterweight division may very well be determined by his next opponent. In addition to the old guard, there has been a recent influx of new blood with guys like Martin Kampmann and Carlos Condit also gunning for the top spot.
And that's fine with Swick -- so long as he doesn't get lost in the shuffle.
"I truly hope to be in the mix, I want to test myself against the best the UFC has to offer. My next fight I want a big fight something to catapult me to the top. I’ll fight anyone they put in front of me but fighting guys like GSP, Thiago Alves or Matt Hughes would work for me."
The division is currently ruled by uber champion Georges St. Pierre. At UFC 100 on July 11, "Rush" must defend his title against Thiago "Pitbull" Alves. Most fans have a pretty hard and fast stance on which fighter is the more dangerous opponent, but to Swick, it's all the same.
"At this point it doesn’t matter to me who wins, both fighters are at the top of their game. I would love to fight either one of them."
Of course no fighter can seriously contend for the UFC welterweight championship without having to face a fighter from American Kickboxing Academy (AKA). After all, two of it's top stars Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck, are both in the current title picture. Fighting a fellow AKA teammate is a bridge that Swick will cross if and when it comes.
"Right now it is the furthest things from our minds, we just don’t think about it at the moment. When the time comes we will have to deal with it, for now we are happy being training partners and helping one another prepare for each other’s fights."
Not long after his June 13 drubbing of Ben Saunders, Swick made sure he was ringside to support another AKA standout when heavyweight blue-chip prospect Cain Velasquez faced the stiffest test to date against the frightening Frenchman Cheick Kongo.
Despite a shaky start, Swick liked what he saw.
"I think he did good, he dominated Kongo. He himself was very disappointed but he is so young and so early in his career. People have to remember that this was only his sixth professional fight! He is going to do huge things in the next year."
While Swick continues to look towards the future, there is no doubt that some of his detractors still look to the past. Specifically the knockout loss to Chris Leben back in 2004 prior to their stint on The Ultimate Fighter -- which "The Crippler" used to get under his skin throughout the duration of the show and beyond.
Ancient history as far as Swick is concerned.
"I don’t even think about it anymore. He has nothing to do with my career and where I am at now. We are on completely different paths and I certainly feel I don’t have anything to prove by fighting him anymore. He had a chance to fight me in a main event a few years back and he turned it down. I washed my hands of him a long time ago."
A mature and focused Swick is unquestionably a force to be reckonend with. The Texas native is in his prime and hitting his stride and with one fight left on his current contract, it could be the most important of his career.
"I will continue to fight as long as I am able to perform at my best. Right now I have one fight left on my current contract and I will see what happens after that. I love training and I love to fight so as long as my body holds up and I can be competitive, I will keep going."
With another win in the books and a bright future ahead of him, Swick has a lot to look forward to and a lot of people to thank for helping him get where he is today.
"I really want to thank my sponsors. From Dethrone Royalty, OakGrove, Micro-Tech, Toe2Toe, Sprawl, Score Clinic to Combat Life, each and every one of them has helped me in one way or another. Last but not least there are my fans, their support means a great deal to me and I would really like to thank them all."

The top 5 right now is GSP, Alves, then the three AKA guys. You want a title shot? Beat up one of your buddies.
by PW on Jun 18, 2009 12:46 PM EDT reply actions
Agreed! They need to start making that team fight eachother.. otherwise, they will never be champs
by enzo-enormous on Jun 18, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions
but they are all boring (swick the least boring). Kos/Fitch would just wrassle each other!
by kevin on Jun 18, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions
kos is not borring fitch in the other hand is!!!
by Nor-Cal Mexican (formely phlicutioner) on Jun 18, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions
You are correct Kev, they are very boring. Fitchs’ most exciting fight was when he got brutalized by gsp for 5 rounds.

Kos’s KNOCK OUT of Yoshida is among my favorites of all time!

absolutely, i think the whole “we’re teammates” excuse is b.s. this isn’t the ifl, there’s no teams in the ufc. if you want to be the best fighter, sometimes you just have to suck it up and fight a friend. are they gonna tell me that if, hypothetically, joe silva asks swick to fight fitch for a no.1 contender spot, he’s gonna turn it down? that’s just ridiculous and if that’s how they want to play it, then fine, let them continue to not be titleholders.
by matmar87 on Jun 18, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions
yes and no! I’m not a swick fan (or any of the AKA guys for that matter. There are more fights out there than just those tools fighting each other! I’d love to see it though!
All that said, I thought swick looked good against an opponent who had no business being in there with him!
I think kos is better than Fitch and swick has the best stand up! Alves beats all 3 at this point and GSP is on another level!
As much as I respect GSP (but don’t like him), I don’t see anyone beating him if his head is on!
by kevin on Jun 18, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions
very true!! i think that they will put him up against Matt Hughes if matt is up for it- Im sure swick can win, and maybe then get a title shot- but he will get owned in every aspect by the likes of GSP and Alves- swick really needs to build some mass on him, ya he’s tall, but to fight at WW u gotta put more muscle on- imagine him fighting Alves he’ll get thrown like a kid.
by ricky on Jun 18, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions
i honestly don’t know if he can beat Hughes! I’m not a fan of either so could care less, but I think Hughes would take him down!
by kevin on Jun 18, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions
he was a middle weight before this… so i dont think size is an issue for him at all in WW….
by mmamind on Jun 18, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions
You can’t put swick in the top 5 of the WW division. He has only ever beaten 1 top 10 in his entire career and that was the Crow back in the day. This makes it so that Martin is ahead of him in the division, he beat Condit who is a top 10 WW, I can’t see how you and others can overlook those facts.
by KillaPo on Jun 18, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions
give’em Alves after GSP beat him
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 18, 2009 12:57 PM EDT reply actions
He don’t deserve to fight Alves yet.He need to fight Kampmann,Condit,Hughes and his AKA buddies first, before hoping to pass before these guys. They all waiting to fight Alves too!
by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 18, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Kevin,
Fitch actually beat Alves when they fought. I agree that they need to fight each other and his response to that question was much different than when I interviewed him last year. He said that he would not fight any of his teammates back then, at least now he realizes they may block his shot at the top. I like the idea of Hughes-Swick but Condit and Kampmann are interesting options as well.
by Bryan on Jun 18, 2009 1:00 PM EDT reply actions
I know Bryan thats why I put “alves beats all 3 at THIS POINT.” Alves has gotten better while fitch has been inactive and Kos has gotten KO’d, oh and while Swick fought someone who should be on TUF finales! Fitch’s only chance against Alves NOW is laying on him!
by kevin on Jun 18, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Bryan, can you get us an interview with Wanderlei, please?
by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 18, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Listen guys, most of you know where I stand on this not fighting buddies or teammates B.S. I’d fight my mother for the right price, these guys are fighters not ballerinas! Fight who the UFC pays you to fight, period!
by kevin on Jun 18, 2009 1:06 PM EDT reply actions
Agree 100%!!!!
Wer’e always told it’s not personal, but apparently it is for some guys. I know the training issues may be valid, but figure it out already.
“So you wanna be a f**king fighter?” Then fight, you wanna hang out with your buddies, join the PGA.
by Jrandolph on Jun 18, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions
I totally agree Kevin. A fighter fights who the promoters put in front of them. The winner can buy the beers later but for 15 minutes you “Get it on.”
by DJ on Jun 18, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions
What about Kampmann or Hughes ??? I think he would smash hughes , but Kampmann is getting to the top , sort of
by robbyc on Jun 18, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions
just checked out MMA weekly, Kampmann and hughes are ranked above Swick …. Kampmann v. Swick!!!!
by robbyc on Jun 18, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions
mma weekly’s ranking suck balls they have aoki and eddie alvarez above BJ thats a fucking joke!!!
by Nor-Cal Mexican (formely phlicutioner) on Jun 18, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions
I like Kampmann a lot. He was doing great as a middleweight even though he was undersized. I can see him as champ some day. Swick vs Kampmann would be a great fight. BOOK IT!
by griffinfan05 on Jun 18, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Why? Condit lost to Kampmann.
I’d rather see Kampmann vs. Swick.
by Fugitive on Jun 18, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Sorry Kevin, I read it too fast!! You are right Alves would beat any of the three, Fitch would have a hard time scoring a take down against Alves. I can not wait until July 11th, what a night!! GSP-Alves, Mir-Lesnar, Hendo gets to beat up Bisping and so many other great fights. Then I get to witness Forrest defeat Anderson live and in person. Kevin, thanks for the opportunity to view that from a nice suite with a bunch of people who share the same love and passion for mma!! With Strikeforce and Showtime joining forces, Bellator making noise and most likely getting onto mainstream ESPN at some point we are in a position to watch quality MMA almost as much as any other major sport, but we get to see it year round!
by Bryan on Jun 18, 2009 1:18 PM EDT reply actions
no problem buddy, are you going to bring some of whatever you’re on?
Bisping will beat Hendo via decision
Forrest has the same chance of beating Anderson as I have of being in a 3-way with Beyonce and eva Mendez!
by kevin on Jun 18, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions
That was hilarious!! Listen I think Hendo will win as far as Forrest winning, he is my favorite fighter (We just named our new dog Griffin) and I have to go with him whether or not he has a shot or not. My idea of a 3-way is Jessica Biel and Jessica Alba who are two of the 25 top Maxim girls Derek Jeter has had his way with!
by Bryan on Jun 18, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Kevin,
If forrest wins i will be a verry jealous man and I dont ussally play in the mud either! but for beyonce ill make an exeption!!!

Phlicutioner!…You don’t play in the mud I suppose that you making, allusion to Beyonce b/c she’s black.Your a supposedly Mexican…wake up dude you are black(brown)too.A Mexican that don’t,like blacks and white peoples(GSP french Cananidian that you dislike,so much). That’s laughable!

your wife is french canadian??? you’re not really mexican then are you!
I kid too!
by kevin on Jun 18, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Well in this case…my badI’m glad that you finally make clear why you were saying that about GSP.Now I,can understand and laugh about it instead to find you stupid for saying these things!
I am french Canadian too!So it was a little bit irritating to read it every time that you were talking about GSP…I wont take it seriously anymore!
by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 18, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with you Kevin. Bisping is extremely fast at MW and although I am not a big fan of his I do respect his skills. Hendo will not be able to keep the pace. Bisping by UD.
I am however, taking Forrest in his fight with Anderson. Believe it or not, I see it going to the ground where Forrest has decent skills and Anderson almost got subbed by a gassed Travis Lutter. We have not seen Anderson grapple with someone as big as Forrest and I think it will be the difference. Forrest, TKO (strikes), 2nd RD.
by DJ on Jun 18, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions
i agree, kampmann vs swick. winner challenges for title from gsp/alves.
id rather see condit take on anthony johnson or matt serra.

Kampmann vx. Swick is the obvious matchup. Either get a war or a quick knockout.
by Jay on Jun 18, 2009 3:17 PM EDT reply actions
I would like to see swick fight Kampmann if he gets past him, fight the loser of gsp/alves and then get a title shot if he gets past them, just my humble opinion.
by nathan on Jun 18, 2009 7:09 PM EDT reply actions
His teammates are the 170# guard, John Fitch and what ever his name is with the blonde hair name escaping me at the moment. When will he have to fight them? I do not think he should even get a crack at GSP without getting past Fitch. Fitch is the best right now in that division minus GSP! Fitch has been through that division and is the gatekeeper. Just my opinion though.
