UFC heavyweight contenders are of no consequence to Brock Lesnar

Props: The Sun
Quoteworthy:
"I watch the other heavyweights and I don't feel threatened by any of them. I'm not getting caught up in la-la land. I'm keeping everything in perspective and keeping it real. But even though I've got the belt, I can still become a better fighter ... It poses a whole other threat now, with people gunning for you and not just me trying to climb the ladder ... Put it this way, guys play golf for recreation. You don't fight and get bloody noses and black eyes for fun. I'm a grown man and I have to make a living out of this."
UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar dismisses the existence of a real challenge within his division despite already holding a submission loss to Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir. Lesnar and "Murr" will clash in a title unification bout at UFC 100 that will also determine just how far the former NCAA and WWE wrestler has come in his still-young MMA career. If he manages to best Mir on July 11, there is a list of up-and-coming 265-pounders who are also waiting for their shot. Is a guy like Shane Carwin a threat to the heavyweight crown? Or is Brock, despite what he says, getting caught up in "la-la land?"

We all no that there are “real threats” to Lesnar, but thats what most fighters would say, if they are holding the belt. No big deal. I’m sure we’ll get hundreds of posts outlining in detail the different ways he could lose, and how he should show more respect and so on, and so on.
I just think it’s more of the same, a guy that beats people up for a living, has to mantain that he could beat people up for a living.

he is so cocky and annoying he probably doesnt feel threatened because he is so much bigger than everyone else in the division
i cant wait until carwin ko’s this guy
but i hope mir breaks his ankle first

What ladder did brock have to climb? He was in a title fight on his 3rd UFC fight??? Not to mention he was 1-1…
I think the hardest part of this is admitting that while he’s an @ss, he won’t be beat for a long time.
There needs to be an additional divison between LHW and HW.

Im actually hearing rumors already that Carwin vs. Vallasquez will be the co-main event at UFC 104

Carwin is going to pwn Brown Pride. As far as Murr goes, Lesnar is going to beat the ever-loving crap out of him. It took Murr two full rounds of landing solid shots to put away a half-dead Nog. Do you think Lesnar fears those pitter-pats? Lesnar is going to put a cinder block fist through Murr’s head, then make him stand up and take another one until Murr can’t get up again.

Arnold,
I tend to agree with you. The HW division has such a big range. Maybe we need a “hulk” division.

Jrandolph: I agree. If in your mind, you dont think that you can beat anyone you fight…..YOU lose before even stepping into the Octagon!
Of Course, he will get bashed for being cocky…but whatever!
All I know, is that in only 3 fights, he has already had a better career and impressed me more then Frank MIr, Fake ass Champion ever did!
Mir = a fat matt serra! Imo they easily go down as the 2 worst champions in the modern day UFC Era, and I am actually a big matt Serra fan, but I gotta keep it real!

i imagine this statement is in response to a question regarding cain and if this is true then i’d agree with lesnar as i dont see how cain at the moment could trouble lesnar. but i do see carwin as a bigger threat to the crown as they are both very similar in size and background, but lesnar seems to be improving extremely quick so if he puts some technique behind them crazy genetics he could be right.

i hope mir just subs him again…..and frank mir is alot better then the last time he fought brock….granted lesner is alot better too…..but i dont see brock controlling frank like he controlled heath for 25 mins without gettin submitted

No this fight is only ending one of two ways. Brock by KO or Mir by submission. I would be shocked if it made it into the Championship Rounds.

i think carwin is a guy he shouldn’t be overlooking. or mir for that matter (even though i think mir might get owned).
by Phil Baloni on Jun 17, 2009 9:50 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
mir get owned?? I seriously doubt that. once again lesnars ego is going to feed him right into a fight ending body bender. he will get his licks in, gain some dominating position, then…. oh hey look i can play the three tap symphony…or eight tap whatever it was last time.

I don’t! Lesnar’s canned ham fist’s gonna bounce Murrrrr’s head off the mat like a basketball and this time the ref wont come to his aid!
Good riddance murrrrr, you’ve fooled a lot of people into thinking you’re top 10, not this one!

Mir nearly got owned the last time when Lesner was a lot greener than he is now, why do you think it will not happen again, now that Lesner has actually had more MMA training. Mir won last time beacuse on Lesners inexperience, I do not see Lesner making the same mistakes again. I am not a major fan of Lesners and I will not be convinced he is the real deal until I see him get a few more wins (out powering Randy like the Silverback he is didn’t do it for me), but he is definately good enough to beat an overrated Mir, who will get a serious beatdown when they next meet.

As I was watching the Kongo/Velasquez fight, I was thinking how much more damage would have been done had it been Kongo vs. Lesnar. I am definitely NOT a huge fan of Brock but his strength is so undeniably unique which explains how well he is able to do against well trained vets of the sport.
Of course Mr. Frank Mir will have something to say about that.

I wonder what the hell is kongo training. his jiu jitsu and his wrestling still suck badly. what a waste.

I do not remember the damage that Lesner gave to Herring on the ground being any greater than what Cain was giving Kongo. Correct me if I’m wrong. It is too bad Kongo picks the wrong moments to decide that he can wrestle, he could really be something if he actually could. Why is it when a fighter uses evasive and elusive tactics to stop himself from getting KTFO and is still connecting with shots of his own, fans want to string them up from the nearest post and more or less call them cowards for doing it, but when someone like Cain takes Kongo down to stop himself from getting KTFO, and keeps him down giving him no chance whatsover to fight back unlike Machida or any other stand up fighter, it is no big deal and nobody has a problem with it. Is just because it is wrestling, it makes it ok.

You’re not a pro fighter if you’re not a little arogant. BUT, I vote for La La Land. Mir, Nog, Carwin maybe Gonzaga and Cain are real threats. Don’t get too cocky.
And thanks for not speaking about yourself in the 3rd person, Brock.

As I was watching the Kongo/Velasquez fight, I was thinking about how Lesnar would have mauled Kongo compared to what Cain did. Its crazy that a guy with incredible strength and speed for a Heavyweight in MMA could do so well with such little experience…
Of course Mr. Frank Mir will have something to say about that.
by Jon on Jun 17, 2009 9:52 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Gonzaga tagged Carwin a couple of times and broke his nose. One lunchbox fist connecting to his head and down he goes. If Mir can’t stop him I just don’t see another heavyweight in the UFC beating him.
by Woody on Jun 17, 2009 10:08 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Lesnar is the naturally bigger man and the better wrestler, so I’d have to pick him against Carwin. But one half-clean shot from either dude could end the fight.

Always true when we are talking about HW’s. These guys are so big, and if they even have a decent swing they can put someone down.
The force they generate is so much greater than say an average WW or MW, but their craniums ability to withstand a heavy punch doesn’t necessarily increase in proportion.
…does that make any sense?
by Jrandolph on Jun 17, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
…so if Carwin was tough enough, his nose wouldn’t break when a 240lbs guy punched him? Huh?
That goes both ways, by the way. Lesnar has yet to get tagged by anyone with serious power.
I don’t think he’s taken a real hit from anyone other than Randy Couture, and Randy is many things but he’s not a heavyweight and, while experienced, not really a huge puncher off the ground. And he still cut Lesnar open when he connected.
That said, between that tiny head and enormous neck Lesnar will probably turn out to be able to take a punch – but being able to take a punch well is not enough to stop you from getting dropped when fighting 250lbs guys. The human brain doesn’t get any tougher with increasing body size, you make it rattle around the skull and that’s it…

I agree. This past weekend was a very disappointing one for heavyweight title contention. I thought Kongo was supposed to be improving his ground game after being totally exposed. This past weekend showed that his ground game has not improved at all and he has no shot against a heavier wrestler in Brock Lesnar that can deliver some real G&P. As far as Velasquez goes, all he showed was his strong wrestling abilities against someone with absolutely zero wrestling ability at all, needless to say not very impressive. And if that’s what Cain calls ground and pound, then he is in for a world of pain when a giant like Lesnar or Carwin lays on him delivering some real blows. I think this is a huge setback for Cain and I don’t think he is ready for any of the contenders that are above him, Carwin, Mir or Lesnar. I think Lesnar’s biggest challenge will be on July 11th. After that I have only the slightest bit of hope for Carwin…but not much after that. Let’s hope something serious comes out of TUF 10.

Dos Santos is a threat no matter how much bigger Brock is. A full power punch from him would knock Lesner out just like it did to Werdum.

Yea, and all I ever read on this website is that Frank Mir is the cocky one. See while Frank Mir is very confident in himself and his abilities, he would never make claims that there is no one out there that he feels threatened by. He respects what every fighter brings to the table. Im glad to hear Brock make this comment, so at least for a couple days it will stop making Mir look like the damn villain in this fight.

Like Lesnar’s gonna turn round and say “actually I’m sh!tting myself about Carwin and Velazquez and please keep Fedor away from me, he’s too damned good!”
He’s the champ and’s obviously gonna say he fears no-one! If I was him I wouldn’t fear anyone either!
by attakdog on Jun 17, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yea its good to think that way, but i think the way he worded it could have been a little more respectful. He should definitly feel threatened. He is the Heavyweight champ of the world in one of the most unpredictable sports in the world. He needs to be more humble, along with being confident in his ability to win
by Dave on Jun 17, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think a lot of people fail to realise that Brock Lesnar is a smart fighter and not just a big knuckle head, he fought Frank Mir and after smashing him got too cocky and ended up losing so in his next fight with Heath Herring he played it safe and with Randy Couture he tried not to panic and keep calm but eventually saw an opening and finished the fight.
Another thing, Lesnars UFC record:
Loss: Mir
Win: Herring
Win: Couture
This guy has faced nothing but top guys and if you think Herrings not a top guy, how come he beat Kongo almost the same way as Cain did.
My point is that this guy hasn’t trained very long and already is the UFC Heavyweight Champion, people always think a fighter is amazing but then they face a good fighter and get beat because they are out of their own league, eg. Ben Saunders losing to Swick (FYI i think swick is good). The biggest name Carwin has beaten is Gonzaga and come on Gonzaga is overrated, Cain is deffinately a future superstar but he couldn’t finish Kongo with a submission or ground and pound and yeah he took Kongo down but Kongos worst skill is wrestling, could he takedown Brock? i doubt it, so he’ll be forced to stand with him and probably get knocked out.
I bet when Brock faces Mir he will keep the fight standing and reject the takedown attempts from mir and probably end up knocking Mir out or maybe winning by decision.
I’m guessing that Mir never got injured and postponed the fight so that Lesnar will peak in training and start wearing himself out.
I think that Carwin probably has the best shot against Lesnar
I deffinately think Kongo would be amazing if he worked on his ground game, imagine kongo a black belt in jui jitsu.
off topic:
why are they doing T.Silva vs Jardine? what is that gonna prove?
And what happened to Overeem signing with UFC.
I pick Thiago Alves, Lesnar and Henderson at UFC 100, these are the people i think will win but i am not counting out their opponents, if the people i said don’t wina UFC 100 then their opponents will win in the following ways:
Mir by Submission, GSP by decision and bisping by decision.
Good luck to them all.

name one fighter who was as good as brock is after 4 fights? no one..not even fedor…people are always saying fedor would be brock…well i would hope so…fedor has had 30 fights…brock has had 4…do u really think fedor beating a guy with only 4 fights is really that big of a deal?
but you take fedor after his 4 fights and put him against brock after his 4 fights and what do u think would happen?
try to think of ANY fighter in THE HISTORY of mma who after their 4th fight would beat brock?? no one..
no one in history has been as good as he is with as little experience as he has

I agree 100%
Brock is making a name, good or badguy he sells a fight
Ppl pay to see him win or lose, like mayweather
I like borck and I hope he tears trough all, a carwin fight is interesting
But seeing as how gonzaga took him down instead, horrible to think how brock would slam him

Hate him or love him Brock is probably right. I don’t see anyone outside of Shane Carwin, who hits like a truck and can wrestle, that is currently in the UFC that has a real shot a beating him.

i wonder what would happen if brock and carwin were kicking it in a bar together and decided to start some shit with some dudes in the bar…and the bouncers came over to break it up and tried to physically throw a pissed off brock and carwin out of the bar…how would that go over? especially if theyd only had a couple drinks and werent drunk…just pissed off…and the drinks just happend to have lots of redbull and rockstar in them..
they grabbed brock and shane by the arms and tried to drag them out the door calling them meathead assholes…
id love to watch the bar security cameras the day after that one

damn as much as i want to, i just can’t hate lesnar. he can be cocky and back it up, yet at the same time i think hes starting to become more humble, especially after his win over couture. and even still, no one can question brocks heart and determination to be the best. i think the loss to mir was the best thing to happen to him. it took brock down a few pegs and made him realize size and brute force wont always triumph over technique. which in turn made him really get his technique and gameplanning in order, as evidenced by his wins over herring and couture. and now look at him, a legit heavyweight champion who improves with each fight. i hate to say it but i think unless frank mir can find a way to take lesnar down rite off the bat and submit him, brock is eventually gonna get the (T)KO. he learned his lesson the first time and think we’re going to see a much more tactical approach from lesnar. but where does he go from there? now i don’t know what brock is talking about not feeling threatened by anyone else in the division, but i think it’s pretty clear that threat #1 is shane carwin. he’s the only heavyweight right now whos just about equal to lesnar in terms of size and power, and i honestly believe he has right combination of experience and technique to beat lesnar. i mean carwin is 6’3" (just as tall as lesnar) and a huge, ripped 262lbs. in fact i believe mike goldberg mentioned in his last fight that carwin is only man in the ufc with bigger gloves than lesnar. clearly, both guys have knockout power, but i think the bigger question is who has the chin to go with it? lesnars chin hasn’t really been tested except by randy, who isn’t known for being a powerful striker. carwin on the other hand got rocked, dropped and suffered a broken nose at the hands of gabriel gonzaga, only to gut it out, get back to his feet and put gonzaga to sleep with a thunderous straight right that had NO torque on it. i mean thats the first KO punch ive seen in a long time that just made me go “daaaaaaamn”. so i gotta give it carwin on the feet. lesnars best chance is to shoot on carwin and try to make it a wrestling match like he did to heath herring, just lay on top, try to not get swept and stay out of danger. that’ll probably be brocks gameplan if he doesnt like what he sees standing up. carwin needs to be weary of the takedown and position himself to counter with good knees. if carwin keeps the fight standing, i think he could put lesnar away relatively quick, probably first or second round.

I’m sorry but I’ve just got to go with Mir. As much as I like Brock I still this his inexperienced rise to the top will come back to bite him in the ass. The only reason he got to the top so quick was because the HW division wasn’t very well defined. Now since he has the belt everybody is coming out of the wood work to get him. There are real threats to him regardless of what the original statement was too him.
Also the ref was very vocal no hits to the back of the head, which Brock continued after two warnings. He may have got caught with a submission. But Mir is also an intelligent fighter. He and his camp are going to develop a plan where Mir can submit Lesnar. Lesnar may be a phenom for catching on quick, and he ended Coutoure’s return to UFC, but Coutoure was at the end of his UFC days no matter how you look at it.
This is turning out to be one of the hottest rivalries in recent memory. But at UFC 100 it will be Mir who has 2 wins via submission against Lesnar. Like it or not Mir is going to regain the HW crown.
by Dave on Jun 17, 2009 5:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What are you talking about? There were no warnings for the shot’s to the back of the head, Brock hit him with 1 maybe 2 shots and Steve stood them up and took a point. Never have I seen that happen, you always here the ref say “watch the back of the head” Well I won’t say always because it didn’t happen in that fight. Which is why Brock said he wouldn’t fight if Steve Maz. was the ref. Mir will get owned and finsihed whether it be standing up or on the ground. GNP first round Brock! Next up a better fighter.. Shane Carwin.
