Cro Cop: Nothing has been signed and I'm prepared to talk with both UFC and DREAM

Props: Index.hr

Quoteworthy:

I have nothing to hide or to be ashamed of. This thing is very simple. I know the truth and Dana knows the truth –- I had a one fight deal with UFC and I fulfilled my contractual obligation. I said we're gonna sit down and talk after UFC 99. The problem is I'm 35 and I'm finally healthy. UFC is offering me a fight six months from now. Even before UFC 99 I said that won't work for me, but they said something like they're gonna change it. I said even before that I wanna fight three more times this year, I don't really care if it's in the ring or Octagon. I still stand behind my words and I know the best fighters are in the UFC, but if they're offering me the next fight in six months I don't see how I could take it. I haven't signed anything yet with any organization and as I said -- I'm prepared to talk with both sides. I've never been in a sweeter yet more difficult position. DREAM offers me more fights, but at the other hand I'm aware of the quality that is in the UFC.

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic responds to the uproar surrounding the fallout from UFC 99 after UFC President Dana White claimed the Croatian jumped ship for a lucrative deal with Japan's DREAM promotion. White struck a one-fight deal with the Cro Cop — something that goes against corporate policy — for him to return against Mustafa Al Turk at UFC 99: "The Comeback" from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany. Both parties verbally agreed to extend the deal longer after the event; however, Cro Cop did not want to wait another six months to fight since he finally feels healthy and his biological clock is ticking. The former PRIDE star still sounds open to a UFC contract -- if the fight frequency can be turned up -- but the question now is would Dana even still want him?

Dana shouldnt cry so much in my opinion. what Mirko just said makes total sense to me. he just wants to fight as much as possible.. maybe for the money but who cares. im with him on this one. rather see him in UFc then dream though

“I’m aware of the quality that is in the UFC” – that is the reason ur not going to go back to the ufc

by JG on Jun 17, 2009 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

this whole situation just sounds fishy…..and cro cop has bitched out before………he would only fight mustapha al turk and i dont beleive that dana would make him wait 6 mounths i think he is just sayin that to try and save face

by JG on Jun 17, 2009 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m trying to recall the last time Dana signed a well know fighter to a one fight deal. And when the last time Dana got screwed by someone and he gave them a second chance. There are plenty of fights for Cro Cop but he may not want them if he’s looking to fight cans only. Most of the UFC HW roster would give him serious problems and I don’t see Dana budging anyway.

by DSmith on Jun 17, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Wtf is with you guys? He’s asking for more fights, and he’s saying he’ll take the contract that gets him the most fights as soon as possible; how can you be hating on the guy for wanting to fight MORE often! Wow, unbelievable.. no matter what the guy does the haters just come out of the woodwork.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 17, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I read that he turned down several high quality fighters before finally agreeing to Mostapha as an opponent. THAT is what pisses me off. F*ck him! He wouldn’t be relevant in the title picture at all anyways.

by Adam T. on Jun 17, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

O bullshit, where did you read it? Who did the reporting on that one? Site a source if your going to call the guy out instead of just sitting here fabricating shit that you made up.

Haven’t been on much this morning, but just logged into Yahoo and I see on the main page that SHAQ has called out HONG MAN CHOI to compete in an MMA match!!! I wonder how serious he really is? He has been ‘training’ mma for something like 10 years or so. His trainer was on ESPN First Take several weeks back and he was teaching Shaq using the _________ and he kept repeating it like 15 times per minute, I don’t remember the name though.

Looks like Japan has a phone call on line 1…

by ViolentMike on Jun 17, 2009 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

That is what Dana said but I’m sure he has no idea what he is talking about. It isn’t like he was at the negotiations or anything.

by Adam T. on Jun 17, 2009 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

You read that he turned down Cain. 5 months after knee surgery most people would. Don’t make things up.

by Jon on Jun 17, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

“That is what Dana said” wow, your source is irrefutable.. you don’t site an interview; a website; an article, nothing, you just say “That is what Dana said”. How the hell do I know Dana said that? Where’s your SOURCE??? Agree with Jon, quit making sh!t up.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 17, 2009 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Jesus, chill out OD.

“Isn’t that a dirty [expletive] thing to do? He [expletived] me. The first time in the history of the company I do one over the phone. He promised me a three-fight deal and he [expletived] me…. He didn’t keep his word. He talked about honor and all this other [expletive] and he [expletived] me. He fed me this bull [expletive] about wanting to take a run for the title, and what I think he did was, he went out and did this. He turned down every other [expletive] fighter I offered him, because I needed him to fight Cain. He didn’t just poke Al-Turk; he poked me, too”

There’s the Dana quote… it’s from three pages back on this very site.

by Jeremyjackson on Jun 17, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

GJ JJ, you see that AdamT?? Thats what I was asking for, PROOF. So basically just Dana ranting in the heat of the moment saying sh!t that he’s going to be retracting later anyway. Yea I can believe he would turn down Cain; who wouldn’t want a full camp to prepare for Valasquez, especially coming off a knee surgery? Other than that, he fails to specify “every other fighter” he offered him; which leads me to believe that he was only offered Cain; turned it down, and then they settled on Al Turk.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 17, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I don’t believe a word Dana says, and if Cro-Cop did screw him it’s a taste of his own medecine. Dana cuts fighters who are under contract all the time without compensating them whatsoever.

by Jeremyjackson on Jun 17, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea I can think of a few guys I don’t think deserved to be cut; Dana should slow his roll as the hatchetman and work on making his fighters happy. I’ll say this, the second my boss rolled into Hastings, saw this power plant, he rose the pay scale, gave me and almost everyone here a hefty raise; and there hasn’t been a problem since. Everybody’s happy, everybody’s productive, and that man earned everybody’s loyalty by treating them right and paying them what they should get paid. If Dana adopted the same strategy with his fighters he’d save himself a lot of bad press and a lot of Head aches with these guys.

Anyway, little off topic but that was just my 2 cents on the fighter pay and keeping these guys happy.

by RoB on Jun 17, 2009 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Randy, Big Nog, Dos Santos.

The only guys who would cause him big problems are Brock, Carwin and Cain, but if he connects he can KO anyone of those guys. Everyone thinks those 3 would pound him out in a matter of seconds, but I dont think so. Lest we not forget, Fedor couldn’t put him away and he has the most viscous GnP in the business, neither could Josh Barnett in 3 attempts. He certainly has nothing to fear from Cain and his GnPitterPatter!

its a win win situation for me

by ufcaddict on Jun 17, 2009 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I dont think Mirko is the kind of guy thats gonna let Dana play mind games on him or get caught up in bs. If Dana does the right thing for his contract he’ll stay. If not he’ll go. Seems pretty straight forward. Doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of room for grey area with Mirko.

by RyGuy on Jun 17, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

The UFC does tend to hold guys hostage making them wait awhile between fights. It gives them more leverage. Look at Nick Diaz he has had two fights since his brother Nates last fight. It is also hard on the up and comers who hardly make any money and then they are at the mercy of the UFC, they need to make a living. I understand if your making millions and only want to fight a couple of times a year but the majority of guys fight because they need the money.

by Mike on Jun 17, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

He really didn’t take any damage in this last fight… give him Carwin in 3 months!

by ---Caesar--- on Jun 17, 2009 11:03 AM EDT reply actions

Cro Cop isn’t how he was in the past, but still to me looked pretty damn good and you know the guy can sell the crap out of tickets. There are the rumors that he declined to fight Cain so lets see that fight like at UFC 103. (102 would be better since I’ll be there)

by Bluepit on Jun 17, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Hard to blame the guy…you have to love that he’s 35 and wants to fight as much as possible before his body completely betrays him. I respect that and if Dana can’t get him fighting before 6 months…he can get some decent albeit not as prolific fights in Dream. I say Cro Cop vs Dos Santos at 103…fireworks!

by Buster Bluth on Jun 17, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I’ll be super pissed if Dana screws this one up; give the man what he wants! Most fighters have the opposite problem, they don’t fight enough; at least Cro Cop WANTS more fights, what the hells the problem?? Give it to him!

by O damn he got caught on Jun 17, 2009 11:04 AM EDT reply actions

I agree its great that he wants more fights and I’d love to see Crocop more often… but from Dana’s view Crocop is a money train still and having him fight often means the opportunity for him to lose more often. Crocop isn’t what he used to be and Dana is trying to squeeze him out for all he’s worth. So with that said I say let the man fight as much as he wants and if he starts his losing streak again, let him go revamp life into DREAM. Its not like DREAM really competes with the UFC anyway.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jun 17, 2009 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Well said guys!…Here the interview(hope that Mania will let me post it b/c the “Index.hr” link doesn’t work…)

I have nothing to hide or to be ashamed of. The thing is very simple. I know the truth and Dana knows the truth – I had a one fight deal with UFC and I fulfilled my contractual obligation. I said we’re gonna sit down and talk after UFC 99.

SO WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM?

The problem is I’m 35 and I’m finally healthy. UFC is offering me a fight 6 months from now. Even before UFC 99 I said that won’t work for me, but they said something like they’re gonna change it. I said even before that I wanna fight 3 more times this year, I don’t really care if it’s ring or octogon.

JAPANESE HAVE BETTER OFFER?

I’m a big star in Japan and I can be on every card I want there. I have a lot of fans there who want me to return. They offer me way more fights and more often, and ther is always a possibility that a fight with Fedor could occur – that is my priority.

WHAT ABOUT "I DON?T KNOW IF I’LL WIN THE UFC BELT BUT I’LL DIE TRYING"?

I still stand behind my words and I know the best fighters are i UFC. I wan’t that belt so much, but if they’re offering me the next fight in 6 months I don’t see how i could take it. I said that when i thougt things will go in another direction. That belt is still my goal – bit I want to have a couple of fights in a next few months.

DID YOU SIGN WITH ANY ORG? DANA LOST HIS TEMPER AND SAID YOU TRICKED HIM

The thing was blown out of proportions. All of this, besides being a sport is a big business too. They know in the UFC i did my part of the deal so I don’t think we’ll have any problems. I haven’t signet nothing yet with any org, and as I said – I’m prepared to talk with both sides. I’ve never been in a sweeter yet more difficult position. Dream offers me more fights, but at the other hand I’m aware of the quality that is in UFC.

AND WHAT NOW?

I really don’t know. I have to consider it and see. I don’t see why I wouldn’t fight in Japan a few fights and then return to UFC. That is also an option. What matters is that i feel great phisically. I can almost say never felt better.

HOW DID IT FEEL TO FIGHT IN KOELN?

Magnificent. Really great. Checkerd items all around, Croatian flags, everybody cheering. I almost felt bad for my opponent at one time cause thy were booing him. I would like to fight again in that kind of atmosphere. I’ve felt like home. That is the stuff that keeps me in training, adrenaline is undescribable. I wouldn’t change that for nothing.

ARE YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR PERFORMANCE, IF WE DON’T TAKE IN CONSIDERATION THAT YOU’RE NOT READY 100% YET?

I’m very pleased all things considering. You saw I didn’t throw one kick, and that is my biggest weapon- I knew that before the fight and i focused only on my wrestling and boxing. My leg is ok, but I’m still afraid of rotatons, In a few months it will be ok completely. I’m at 50% now.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF AL TURK? IS HE A POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE SURPRISE?

He had a positive impact on me. He started very strong, with wide crosses, trying to get to my chin. Then he tried to shoot for my legs, but I shruged him off easily. He didn’t have to do that thing with the eye though.

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 17, 2009 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he wants fights but he wants to be able to hand pick his opponents. I read that Mirko turned down several high quality fighters before agreeing to Mostapha. F*ck him. It isn’t like he will be a factor in the UFC title picture anyways. I couldn’t possibly care less.

by Adam T. on Jun 17, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

When you are a complete nobody like Cain Valasquez or Shane Carwin, you fight whoever you are offered. When you have a huge following (and Crocop has a HUGE following), you do not have to take any fight you are offered – especially when you are coming off major surgery. There is nothing focking wrong with it. Couture does it every fight and no one says anything. Crocop wants Nog or Couture and they wont be available for 6 months. In the meantime, he should go fight Overeem or kharitonov elsewhere.

Good luck to Mirko and hopefully we will get to see him fight 3 more times this year.

by stevo on Jun 17, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

“Couture does it every fight and no one says anything.”

yea cause, Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Vitor Belfort, Josh Barnet, Ricco Rodriguez, Gabriel Gonzaga and Brock Lesnar are/were all cans when he fought Couture; Randy Hand picked each and every one of those opponents just so he’d win…

by O damn he got caught on Jun 17, 2009 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

IMO Randy handpicks his opponents by only taking fights with Big Name opponents. He only wants big fights. You think Randy would take a fight with Cain? Cain isnt popular enough yet. Why do you think Randy has been in something like 16 title fights? Certainly not by taking every fight that gets offered to him. When you develop a name for yourself, you earn the right to be more selective with your opponents – That is all I was saying.

CroCop vs Overeem II, the Dutch beast needs to finish what he started in that last fight (not talking about the groin shots) and kick the crap out of CroCop. CroCop vs Kharitonov, CroCop vs Monson, and hell CroCop vs Mousasi could probably be done as well in DREAM.

by Belisarius on Jun 17, 2009 11:09 AM EDT reply actions

But when Cro Cop says he wants to fight in Japan, it comes with the unspoken disclaimer….as long as that someone isn’t a respectable opponent.

by Amos on Jun 17, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

If this is true, then Dana needs to make this happen. Its rare that you get a guy who wants to fight like that. Again i specify, if this is all true, but if it is true, then make it happen, Cro cop still has pretty good drawing power

by MMA040 on Jun 17, 2009 11:12 AM EDT reply actions

CroCop is one of those fighters that have a loyal following. He is for real. Like many other true warriors in the UFC he deserves to fight. If there is one thing I can say badly about the UFC is that some of the fighters have to wait way too long to fight. A guy like Florian shouldn’t have to wait this long to fight Penn.

“Bisping vs Silva after he beats Hendo at UFC 100” – keep dreaming.

Dont think they will throw him to Carwin just yet, though past his prime Cro Cop is still dangerous and they are trying to build Carwin up. I could see him vs Dos Santos or Gonzaga maybe.

What has happened? CC never signed with dream as we were told by Ayotollah Dana White

Dana flew off the handle, went into a foul mothed tirade without knowing all the facts and jumped to the wrong conclusion, without pausing for a deep breath and thinking things over for a while and maintaining his dignity.

Typical un-Dana behaviour that, never seen him behave like that before! Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

by attakdog on Jun 18, 2009 4:22 AM EDT up reply actions

ufc really needs to learn a lesson from strikeforce and have fighters fighting every 2 months who want to fight instead of sitting on the sidelines for 5 or 6 months..its one thing if a guy goes through a war…but when a guy ko’s someone in the first round and takes no damage there is no reason why he shouldnt be fighting in 2 months just like they do in strikeforece..

those guys over there are always ready to go…i know its because they dont have as many fighters so they need as many people as they can for their events but dont u think the ufc fighters would love getting a fucking payday every couple a months like the strikeforce guys are getting?

sitting guys on the sidelines for 4 months after they finish a fight in which they take absolutely no damage whatsoever is absolutely fucking retarded….good for cropcop to weigh other options instead of sitting at home watching tv for half a year…

i love strikeforce for that..those fighters over there are always ready to go…scott smith..biggest balls in mma taking the punishment he did 2 fights in a row so close together and he’ll be ready to go in august too…

like i said, i realize its because they have a small roster, but i know the guys enjoy the multiple pay days and the constant exposure they are getting on showtime cause they replay the events over and over all the time….

besides, its dana’s fault for only signing crocop to a one fight deal..crocop was no longer under any obligation to dana after the fight…randy fucked dana….not cro cop for weighing his options

How much did cro cop make in his 99 fight with the ufc? did the salaries ever get posted? He has to be making some money with his huge following that he has.

by Winner by Strikes!! on Jun 17, 2009 12:27 PM EDT reply actions

I think featuring CC in Germany was a great idea for the UFC due to the large number or Croatians throughout central Europe.
Otherwise I dont really see the value added for the UFC arising from CC.
The way the fight went down was a real shame. I feel like his opponent got betrayed (which UFC fighter would turn away during a fight like this?) and i am not at all impressed with CC.
He should stick to the K1 type of organisations.

Dana needs to shut his trap. CC has not signed anything with DREAM yet, and Dana is telling everyone he has? What an unprofessional idiot.

Funny thing is, with the 1 fight contract, Dana would have turned his back on CC if he would have lost the fight with Al Turk, then he and his nutluvin’ followers would be saying “it’s just business”.

Good on CC for calling the shots in his career instead of selling his soul to the Devil whenever he comes calling.

Dana just got beat to the punch this time around, and it comes as no surprise to me that he is whining about it. Bullies always whine when they don’t get their way….always.

by introvert on Jun 17, 2009 3:30 PM EDT reply actions

you’re such a piece of work.

Instead of giving Dana credit for going against his own rules, signing a 1 fight contract, VERBALLY, just to get CC to fight on short notice at a huge, historic event Germany, you bash him. If CC would have asked for it that way and got turned down by Dana, you would still call him a loser.

In you’re eyes Dana can never do anything right, I just feel sorry for your kids.

I don’t want to be Dana I’m happy where am at, thanks for asking. Personally I just want his money.

What turns my crank are people like you who constantly beat a dead horse. Yeah, we get it, you hate Dana, get over it.

Why don’t you put that aside and have some constructive input on MMA subject matter. That would make you appear to be intelligent rather than using large words you looked up on the internet. Narrow-mindedness gets you nowhere.

LMAO

You’re still mumbling.

I’m not the guy who personally attacks people who laugh at Dana’s unprofessional antics.

Why do you take it so personally?

Dana’s a douchebag. Nothing “narrow-minded” about it…he does everything he can to prove it, I just comment when he does.

I guess I could kiss his ass with every move he makes like you….that’s what you mean by “constructive”. Anything less than kissing his ass cheeks is not “constructive” as far as your concerned.

It’s pathetic.

by introvert on Jun 18, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

…Why the fuck are you guys saying that CC turned down a “whole bunch of fighters”? Because Dana said he did, in a hissy fit? Wake the fuck up people….Dana’s full of shit.

Exactly! The UFC doesn’t have a “whole bunch of fighters” for CC to turn down. Half it’s heavyweight roster was on that card and its other 6 HW’s are commited to fights or out of action.

Typical Dana BS!

…Fuck, all the best HW’s, besides 2 or 3, are not in the UFC anyway.

It’s a win/win for CC fans if he signs elswhere….more fights + better opponents.

…..Fighters who entered, AND WON, the Pride OWGP’s don’t turn down a “whole bunch of fighters”…..not on Dana’s say so anyway.

Crop looked crappy, he looked just like he did against Eddie Sanchez. Flat footed, and terrible. If he signs with Dream he’ll be doing Dana and the UFC a favor

Exactly, “Dana had said”. He has been known to bend the truth a little in the past you know, especially when he’s in the heat of one of his vile, profanity ridden rants!
