Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 cast revealed for Spike TV UFC show

The debut of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 is not for another three months — September 16, 2009 to be exact — but the roster of fighters is starting to fill out. The list includes a former IFL champion, several NFL players, a few UFC veterans and one YouTube phenomenon for good measure.

The Sun passed along the news, suggesting the cast will comprise just 16 heavyweights, all of whom will get a spot of the show. This is down from 32 fighters who have had to fight their way into the house in an opening elimination round, as seen in recent seasons.

Check out the full TUF 10 cast after the jump:

Star-divide

  • Kimbo Slice (3-1): The YouTube phenomenon and former Elite XC headliner
  • Roy Nelson (13-4): Former IFL champion
  • Wes Sims (22-12-1): Former UFC fighter
  • Marcus Jones (4-1): Former NFL player
  • Matt Mitrione (0-0): Former NFL player
  • Wes Shivers (N/A): NFL veteran
  • Jim York (10-2): MMA fighter
  • Justin Wren (6-1): NFL player/MMA fighter
  • Mike Wessel (6-1): Former UFC fighter
  • Scott Junk (6-2-1): Former UFC fighter
  • Zak Jensen (7-3): MMA fighter
  • Darrill Schoonover (10-0): MMA fighter
  • Brendan Schaub (4-0): MMA fighter
  • Jon Madsen (1-0): MMA fighter
  • Tom Blackledge (8-6): MMA fighter
  • Abe Wagner (6-2): MMA fighter

Commissioned to coach this eclectic band of misfits will be two former light heavyweight champions in Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and "Sugar" Rashad Evans. The pair will have their hands full as this season will comprise heavyweight contenders exclusively.

In fact, TUF 10 will be the first TUF season to feature heavyweights since the second season in late 2005. That season — which culminated in a heavyweight showdown between Rashad Evans and 6’7" Brad Imes — was noted more for its light heavyweights fighting up in weight than it was for its true heavyweight contenders, including Evans, Keith Jardine, Mike Whitehead and Seth Petruzelli.

The date for "The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale" has already been slated for December 5, 2009, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Following the finale, coaches Jackson and Evans are expected to duke it out for the number one contender position in the light heavyweight division.

Big country? He’ll be tough if he came in decent shape

by Big Daddio on Jun 16, 2009 12:12 PM EDT reply actions

and even tougher if he doesn’t (according to him)

by McArthur on Jun 16, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

It figures they wouldn’t have any of these guys fight their way onto the show, Dana’s way of guaranteeing Kimbo Slice gets air time and raising show ratings. I also think Big Country is in there as a fail safe. If by some chance Kimbo gets to the finale he’ll most certainly be paired up with Roy Nelson; who will in turn ensure that Kimbo does not win the show.

Not that the UFC wouldn’t give Kimbo a HW fight after TUF; but short of Eddie Sanchez (who’s been let go) or Justin McCully who in the UFC could he even be competitive against?? The guys got a good personality for the reality show but after it’s over and their through with him they’ll kick him to the curb. He’s not at the level to compete on a UFN or a PPV card. Thats just my opinion tho, who knows..

agreed

There’s just not enough talented guys at heavyweight. As it is there are a bunch of light-heavyweights on the show. If they had to get the number to 32 they would really have to scrape the bottom of the barrel and I for one do not want that. It would be nice if the TUF 10 winner was actually a heavyweight.

by DDT on Jun 16, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

good point….Jon Madsen (1-0): MMA fighter is pretty much the bottom of the barrel at this point for the UFC

by McArthur on Jun 16, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

i bet madsen would beat kimbo..

this is actually a lot more talented of a crowd then season 9, you got big country who is all around talented, and you have marcus jones who hit’s like a truck..

that right there is 2 more guys then this season will proudce currently airing

Marcus needs to win this crap..

I’ve seen Marcus Jones fight in Daytona, and that guy is BIG with BIG power. I’m with RoB and say that he takes the show.

Dana – "If Sylvia wants to end his career in UFC he has to go on TUF"

"Are you kidding me,he seriously wants to return to the UFC?"
"He hasn’t won a fight in years and when he did he usually put eveyone to sleep, the only time he’s in an exciting fight is when he’s getting his [expletive] ass handed to him.Look,he just got beat by a near 50 year old in under 10 [expletive] seconds, how do you expect to be taken seriously after that?He just made MMA look like a complete joke.If he has any hopes of ending his career in (the) UFC he will have to go on TUF,there’s no other way he’s getting in"

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 16, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Real quote from Dana? Thats funny sh!t right there. Poor Tim can’t catch a break; thats his own damn fault for trying to take it easy on himself and fight a 48 yr old boxer in MMA. He deserves all the negative press he gets at this point.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 16, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Tim was done a long time ago. The only time he seemed truly hungry was the beginning stages of his UFC career. He used to be in shape and aggressive with his boxing. Smashing AA (glass chin) twice gave him a sense of entitlement. He started getting physically sloppy and his fights looked lazy.

All downhill from that point on…

by OJR on Jun 16, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t say if it’s a legit quote,I got a link though.
The site is also the one that reported Mark Coleman was training with Earnest The Cat Miller in preparation for Lyoto Machida. So it might not be true???

Probably only a couple of these guys have to cut to make 265 lbs, if at all; I doubt you’ll see a whole lot of healthy eating this season.

Kimbo wont win this season of TUF. nO doubt about it!

With that said, Dana white should just book:

KIMBO vs. LIDDELL as the co-main event of the Rampage/Rashad ppv…let Chuck KO Kimbo, and ride off into the retirement sunset with a vintage chuck Liddell KO against a guy he has been dying to knock out (kimbo). tHen he can just curt Kimbo and we can all laugh and forget about him!

I am happy that bIMBO will be on TUF because seeing him interact with the young fighters in that hELL HOLE known as a house will make for some great tV!

by JOhn G on Jun 16, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Kimbo might turn out to be boring in the house. Lots of mumbled “know what I’m sayin’s” and barely coherent requests for hot sauce.

FYI…Jon Madsen used to go back and forth with Brock Lesnar in wrestling they have a very long history. Another tough SD farm boy. Mark my words he’s going to eat up alot of the competition on TUF 10.

I agree with MADSEN.. Nobody will give him any respect and he can tear it up. I went to school with him and he was a mad man. I know he has dedicated himself and he already has a DIV II heavyweight wrestling title. I can’t wait for this show and i PROMISE he represents SD WELL.

Who cares about who “went with Brock” in high school. Brock didn’t do anything high school. It wasn’t until Marty Morgan and J Robinson got a hold of him that he really started to show what he could do.

how so? with the exception of kimbo, there’s a lot of great fighters on this card. wes sims, roy nelson, jim york, scott junk; as far as tuf is concerned, this is perhaps the most talented cast i have seen. (again, with the exception of kimbo.)

by JB on Jun 16, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m probably guilty of doing making the same assumptions about the NFL guys that a lot of people (not me) made about Lesnar for coming in from the WWE.

by PW on Jun 16, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

How can you say Kimbo isn’t talented? Sure the dude made a fool of himself vs Petruzelli. Think of it this way, every fight he was a part of in EliteXC he wasn’t in shape. Im willing to bet he wasnt in shape for his street fights either. Yet he still KO’d some dudes. The man can still throw hands. If he came into the season with a chip on his shoulder and in shape he has a good punchers chance. So he does have some talent…

by steve on Jun 16, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

i never said he didn’t have ANY talent. i just mentioned that i felt this was the most talented TUF cast i have seen. and it is this way in spite of kimbo. seriously, kimbo really won’t be able to hang with any of the guys i mentioned.

i believe that too PW..a cardio nightmare..but highly entertaining..with all the leaks this season has already they may as well tell us who is coaching whom..who won the first fights…lol..i can only imagine the house..and maybe if we are lucky they will spare us most of the house antics and show them whipping these big bastards into shape..and dana is soooo gonna ride the kimbo into the sunset..even if he does sh*t in tuf..you can just see the fights he’ll give him just for the draw..

by sarah on Jun 16, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I think if Roy doesn’t win, wich he should, then this season will produce some serious heavyweight talent. I dont think Kimbo has a chance.

by BILLYCARNAGE on Jun 16, 2009 12:23 PM EDT reply actions

Obviously Kimbo is at the lower end of the fighters. But this is genius because not only will casual fans turn in to see him, but also he is all but assured a spot on the Finale (more ratings) and even if he loses he will get one more fight (more ratings).

Feel bad for Blackledge, he apparently had given up mma but came back to fight at LHW and got a nice win in M-1. He’s a decent kickboxer but he’s been dominated on the ground quite a few times and against some of these big HW’s, he’ll be in trouble.

I think there is room for Kimbo in the UFC after he loses TUF 10. I think he would be perfect for the small cards like Finale’s or give him The Iceman for Chucks last fight in the UFC so he can go out on a winning note. Plus the ratings for the fight would be thru the roof! U cant tell me that every casual fan on the planet wouldnt pay to see that shit….Im no casual fan and I would pay to see Kimbo get KO’d by Chuck! Plus if it backfires and Chuck loses now the UFC can actually market him as a half way decent fighter cause all the casual fans will think he is super tough for KO of Chuck.

Good business by Dana White…he might be an asshole but he is one smart asshole!

by Extremecoutureguy on Jun 16, 2009 1:37 PM EDT reply actions

Abe wagner also played some NFL pigskin….he spent some time with green bay but never played…….He is a Huge Heavyweight and has a ton of power….he will def make some noise on the show and in the UFC

by rightjoe on Jun 16, 2009 1:56 PM EDT reply actions

Are these guys all legit HWs and not a bunch of Rashads that are going to cut to LHW as soon as the show ends? I know Nelson would have to lose a leg to make 205, but other than him. And Fergie.

by PW on Jun 16, 2009 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

Wes Shivers is a beast.

He used to have to cut to make 265 and he’s pretty cut.

by JaSwin420 on Jun 16, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

For those who think Kimbo wont get a contract if he doesnt get to the finals are crazy.

If Kimbo looks good and ratings are up he will get a fight or two in the UFC.

Especially since most guys on the show improve tons.

There have been plenty of seasons in which much of the cast is in the UFC for a few fights.

by Badguy on Jun 16, 2009 1:58 PM EDT reply actions

Ya obviously if he gets destroyed on the show he has not shot, but if not, hes going to get some fights. Dana isnt saying that he told him he had to WIN the show he just says he had to go through the show to get to the UFC.

by Fokman on Jun 16, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

He’ll be in and out of the UFC inside of 2 fights; assuming he gets a fight after the show. Kimbo just isn’t at the UFC level of competition; even the weakest guys in the HW division would give him a good beating; I’m talking Justin McCully could rag doll him; and if McCully owns you in a fight then you may as well look at a different carreer.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 16, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Kimbo has been training real mma with top gyms and fighters. Most guys don’t do that till after the show. He should have improved leaps and bounds already. The whole time ya’ll have been on here calling Fergie a joke, he has been turning himself into the real deal. Will it be enough? We shall see. You can only train so much and age and stamina and chin are hard to train past.

This is the most i’ve been anticipating a season of TUF. There doesn’t seem to be a glaring slouch among the bunch.

I would have to say Kimbo has his work cut out. Roy Nelson has to be the favorite going in but Roy often leaves himself wide open and will certainly need to tighten up his standup defense to win it all. I think conditioning is the biggest factor and whomever shows up in good shape and learns over the course of the show will come out on top.
