Mirko Cro Cop win over Mustafa Al Turk at UFC 99 will stand

Props: MMAWeekly.com

Quoteworthy:

"It’s very simple. By the unified rules... first of all the referee didn’t see the foul. What you’re asking is can we go to instant replay. You’re saying now that the fight’s over, can you take a look at it? If the referee had seen the finger and stopped the fight immediately, he could have given a stop for five minutes to recover, and then if (Al-Turk) couldn’t have gone on, it would have been a no-contest.... In any sport, a judgment call cannot be overturned. It’s one of those things that happens, but nobody saw it around the Octagon until the replay."

UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, Marc Ratner, tells Mustafa Al Turk and his management team not to waste their time filing an appeal, which they intended to do, because the result will stand. Al Turk was poked in the eye during his heavyweight fight with Mirko Cro at UFC 99: "The Comeback" on June 13. The referee in charge of the action, Dan Mirgliotta, didn't see the foul and the action continued. Cro Cop went on blast Al Turk -- who was covering his face at this point -- en route to a first round technical knockout. It's a similar situation to what happened between Anthony Johnson and Kevin Burns in their first encounter. The pair would later go on to finish their business in a rematch ... something that Cro Cop and Al Turk may not have the luxury of doing after the fiasco the ensued after the fight between White and the Croatian.

Al Turk would have been knocked out either way…

Anyway, Is it true that Mirco is gone ? Or is that just a myth or something ?

I think it was all rumors. Cro-Cop said he just doesnt want to wait around for another fight.

All i know is that I hope for some decent mma news this week. Lately the mma news has been CRAP! NOt a Knock on Mania, if there is NO news to report, there is NO NEWS TO REPORT…cant start fabricating stories.

Im craving for some decent mma news…an interview, a few video’s, a couple of fight announcements.

I had it up to hear with all the crap that follows every single UFC ppv. We spend WEEKS debating judges decisions, or eye pokes, greasing…Im am just sick of all that CRAP!!!

Someone NEEDS to uncover a juicy fight announcement and REPORT IT!

LEGIT QUESTION: Do you really get 5 minutes to recover from an eye poke? According to Inside MMA, the answer is NO. You only get 5 minutes to recover from a low blow.

Does anyone else know anything on this topic? I always just asumed that an eye poke gets you up to 5 minutes as well, but it was a topic on an episode of Inside MMA like 6 months ago and they cleared it up.

And John, hopefully Tito opens his mouth and says something stupid. That’s always good for 200 comments.

by ViolentMike on Jun 16, 2009 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

true that VM!

TO answer your question, I think that the answer is yes!
tHales was given up to 5 minutes for knees to a grounded opponents face (thats not a low blow)….im sure if you get blasted in the back of the head hard enough n your equilibrium is all messed up….I assume you would get up to 5 minutes to recover!

I was under the assumption that you get up to 5 minutes for ALL ILLEGAL blows….Check out my response to our Salvia discussion we had yesterday….Its an old thread so feel free to post a response under here!

QUESTION: what do u guys think? Should mma judges have to face the media after each event?

I SAY YES!!!!! These clowns are getting paid to judge fights! they need to atone for doing the crappy job that they do on almost every singe card!

They F up, at least 1 decision on every event!

by JOhn G on Jun 16, 2009 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

i say yess as well!!

i felt wand won his fight as well as davis..both of those calls seemed suspect..

the uno fight was sooo close i felt it could have gone either way..might of been a draw??

and what was up with kongo losing his decision?? no way kongo lost that fight!!.[just kidding~]

but yeah i felt at least two fights were scored by the judges with improper conclusions..

by stinky~fingers on Jun 16, 2009 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

IMo, Hardy won, wandy won, and Uno should have won!

Uno/fisher fight: Round 1 went to spencer, but I dont know what anyone could have saw to give rounds 2 and 3 to Spencer. Imo Uno won that fight 29-28. I dont even think Fisher wanted to be in there by the 3rd round…THere is no doubt in my mind, that had there been 1 more round….Uno would have destroyed Spencer! All I know is Uno better not get cut after that loss.I want to see him matched up against a high level grappler:

Nate Diaz vs. Uno would be Fantastic!

I dont even remember anything that Davis did…but I wont be forgetting that Knee Hardy delivered, or those Brutal elbows he sent crashing into Marcus’s face….I think Hardy won that fight on Damage!

Wandy/rich fight was really close and it could have gone either way so I wont bitch about that decision….it was a close fight that I think Wandy should have won by aggression and Octagon control….He basically walked Rich franklin down the entire fight. Few times Rich got a takedown, Wandy got right back up without suffering any damage. and striking damage was pretty much even, so I would give a slight edge to Wandy!

by JOhn G on Jun 16, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I’ve only seen the fight between Wand and Rich the one time, it was pretty damn close; I don’t know who I’d give it to. I think it could’ve gone either way and really wasn’t too upset with the decision. Rogan had said the rumor was going into the fight that Wand came in and had to cut 12 lbs the day before the fight; I have never seen him gassed in his entire carreer, that was the first time I’ve ever seen him look so flat out there.

I would have to say the weight cut definatley had a lot to do with his sluggishness. That being said, I am definatley looking forward to seeing Wandi fight at 185; I’m hoping he can learn to cut the weight better and come in with good Cardio, IMO had he not gassed he would’ve KO’d Rich with relative ease in the 2nd rd.

It was a great brawl though, good action and can’t knock either guy, they both left it all in the cage. I was definatley pulling for Wandi, really liked what I saw from him in Rd 1 with the TD and some top control; switched things up a little bit and I was happy to see that. He also didn’t bum rush Rich, was looking to pick his shots early on and fight a little more strategically; imo that is definatley an improvement and although it didn’t go his way, he’s hopefully headed in the right direction with his weight/training. Rich Franklin did not deserve the boos from the crowd; was unfortunate but great to see the love that Wandi gets from the crowd; thats what he seems to care about most and I’m glad the fans stand by him win or lose. As always, I’m still a fan and can’t wait to see his next fight!

WAR WANDERLEI!

by O damn he got caught on Jun 16, 2009 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I will co-sign that post Odamn!

I knew wanderlei was in trouble when they showed the clips of him hitting the mits back stage before they were introduced….then when I saw Wandy make his entrance…I knew that the weight cut didnt go good…He looked TIred, drained and out of it, while making his entrance…there was no fire in his eyes…he simply looked DRained!

Hopefully he gets a hold of an American wretsler that can teach him to properly cut the weight. After seeing him face Rich, there is no question in my mind that if he can properly cut down to 185lbs…he will be a FORCE at middleweight!

by JOhn G on Jun 16, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

and with wandy tired as hell rich still could not dominate, if wandy had more gas he would have beat rich no problem.

by roy on Jun 16, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree John, I thought wand looked focussed and wasn’t going to waste one ounce of energy on an entrance (Fedor)

by kevin on Jun 16, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t have the energy to debate the Rich vs Wandy fight again, but it was close enough that you can’t be too pissed. I personally would like to see more draws in MMA. Maybe they should have to win by three points.

What happened to Turk is far worse than a bad decision IMO. He may have lost anyway, but he should have been able to throw his looping bombs until he lost legitimately. I would love to see instant replay for stuff like this. It’s a new sport so it would be nice if we didn’t adopt the flaws of other combat sports.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 16, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL “Looping Bombs”. They were bombs alright, they’d just had all the explosive taken out of them.

by attakdog on Jun 16, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

attakdog,

I’m not arguing their retardedness. Quite the opposite. I’m just saying he should have had his right to throw them until he lost in legit fashion.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 16, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn’t picking a fight with ya chief, your description just made me chuckle!

by attakdog on Jun 16, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I always sound more dickish or defensive than I intend with my posts. I wish I could indicate the tone with which I’m delivering my messages. Is that what those little faces are for? I don’t think I could put little yellow faces without feeling a touch gay so maybe I’ll start putting in parenthesis things like “lighthearted” or “indifferent”

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jun 16, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

1) Asking judges to face the media is a slippery slope. Things become a popularity contest and judges lean towards public opinion when they have to answer to moronic fans after the fight.

2) Rich should not be criticized for how he fought; he should be commended! This coming from a Wanderlei fan! He didn’t stand in the pocket and trade with Wand because that would be suicide. The drunks should be thankful he decided to stand at all! He could have taken Wand down anytime and won the fight in a boring fashion.

3) When are we going to find out a main event for 103! That would give us dorks something to talk about!

by Jeremyjackson on Jun 16, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Just watched the fight again, and damn I didn’t realize just how good it was till I saw it a 2nd time; that was one entertaining brawl right there. Wand did look a little flat but not as bad as I had thought initially; I give rd 1 to Wand, the TD and top control were key imo; and Rich did not get a TD on Wand, Wandi dropped back for a guillotine and missed giving Rich top control. IMO that shouldn’t have counted as a TD but who knows how the judges scored it. As far as exchanges in rd 1, there were a few, and Rich landed a couple extra shots but nothing really noteworthy.

Rd 2 was close but I had to give it to Rich; he did drop Wand with a jab that Wandi basically just ran right into, but it was a knock down none the less. The rest of the round was close but Wandi had a couple slips that probably looked bad in the eyes of the judges; because of the slips and Rich landing more often I had to give him rd 2.

Rd 3 also close and imo that one was the tie breaker. It was really anybody’s round; Rich started off strong and then about half way through the rd Wandi ended strong. That one I couldn’t decide who to give it to; but it was a great back n forth fight overall. In the end I have no problems with the Judges giving it to Rich; he stayed busy, he stayed out of the pocket and kept moving and thats how you have to fight Wandi.

I am definatley saddened to see that Silva is in such a bad spot carreer wise; but from what Dana said it doesn’t sound like they’re talking about him retiring or anything. In fact, I feel much better after the press conference when Dana basically said the UFC will always have a place for Wanderlei wether he’s fighting or not. He seemed calmer, more collected and more focused; he took the TD when it came, worked some GnP and was more strategic in his approach to the fight. All in all, I’m not dissapointed at all; in fact looking forward to his first fight at 185 lbs. I still think Wand has a future there if he can just lock up a win this next time out.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 16, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Good post OD. We were so close to going six for six, eh? JJ™ picks = GOLD. ;-)

by Jeremyjackson on Jun 16, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

i never complained nabout rich getting the win, its was close and i had him winning it barely, i just think silva looked tired after the first round and rich should have been able to do more, i saw a tired wand almost win is how i saw it i will have to watch it again though.

by roy on Jun 16, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

thats the question…who cares about his last fight…what about his next fight.

by McArthur on Jun 16, 2009 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Does common sense stand a chance against bureaucratic protocol? Ever? It’s utter nonsense! Upon seeing the footage, the fight should easily have been issued an NC. What’s the point of being able to appeal in the first place?

And to say Cro Cop would have won anyway is irrelevant. As someone said, this is MMA; someone can suddenly get knocked to the canvas out cold.

Yeesh.

by Johnny Farnham on Jun 16, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

He may have won anyway, but that’s not the point. It sucks when this kindof thing happens because it really isnt right to the fighter that gets poked…like Rumble did. Not to bring this up again, but like the grease gate thing. Yea Gsp probably would have won, but cheating is cheating. Not saying he did or didnt, but it shouldnt matter who would have won is the point. Again, sorry for bringing up the fn grease gate thing!

by BOW on Jun 16, 2009 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree. It’s almost a sure thing that Al-Turk would have lost but they stole his chance to put up a fight at least. I feel sorry for him. I hope they don’t cut him because it wasn’t really fair.

Dan Miragliotta should have seen it. Damn.

But the worst of them all was Mazzagatti. That was a joke. Rumble had already been poked in the eye a couple of times before the final gouge, so it was kind of obvious.

by Johnny Farnham on Jun 16, 2009 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

People stop saying Al Turk would have been knocked out anyway – this is MMA, how many times have you seen someone getting their ass kicked only to turn it around with one punch? (It’s not like Cro Cop was really doint THAT much in this fight anyway) You never know.

To me Mirgliotta should have seen something was up and stepped in, if a fighter turns his back like that and covers his face when he knows he’ll be wailed on you’ve got to think something is up right? If he was play acting that would not be tolerated and win/lose/draw he would not fight again (Dana has shown this with jokers like Kalib “Marathon Man” Starnes). Bad call all round, should be a N/C especially if Cro Cop is fucking off to Dream – would teach him not to lie to his fans too (as he did at the end of this fight about wanting to fight the best etc) ;)

I just hate any injustice of any kind and I’ve seen Cro Cop use his fingers to the eyes before, I don’t like it.

by Jimrod on Jun 16, 2009 7:48 AM EDT reply actions

Sorry but, He would have been knocked out anyway!

by attakdog on Jun 16, 2009 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Just like when GSP was beating Serra?… Or Gonzaga kicking Carwin’s ass?… Arlovski pounding Fedor? When Scott Smith was done with the liver shot from Pete Sell? When Guida was dominating Huerta?… Those are just examples off the top of my head – in MMA anything can happen ;p

by Jimrod on Jun 16, 2009 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions

LMAO, your comparisons are great, the only hole in your argument is the fact that Serra, Carwin and Fedor all have skill. Al Turk has none whatsoever, he’s a complete can! he couldn’t KO CC if he had a thousand rounds. His laughable big overhand punches were the slowest and most cumbersome I’ve ever seen thrown in the octagon!

by attakdog on Jun 16, 2009 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

True :D But I just hate unfairness really, un unfair win to me is not a win – Cro Cop says he didn’t feel it (the eye poke), I’m not so sure, but any fighter with heart would not feel satisfied with that “win”. I would give a rematch ASAP to lay it to bed – but that probably won’t happen now. Unfortunately due to the limited number of fights available in the careers of these guys they can’t be messing around with these cans when they have bigger fish to fry. I just wish they’d get past them with convincing victories rather than dubious decisions!!

by Jimrod on Jun 16, 2009 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup, the outcome would have been the same. Crocop was just getting finished ‘feeling him out’. Al Turk had already given Cro Cop his best effort on his feet after a minute and a half. Mirko was just beginning to give his best effort.

by Jason on Jun 16, 2009 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Damn eye poke!!! The way that fight was going that eye poke probably saved Al Turk from knockout of the night. I feel robbed!!

by stevo on Jun 16, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope you are right…

by Il Nino on Jun 16, 2009 8:14 AM EDT reply actions

It was only a matter of time before Mirko ko’d Turk, still hate to see it end that way……….

by Dragon on Jun 16, 2009 8:14 AM EDT reply actions

Correct! Mirko looked like sh!t, but was still 1000 times too good for Al-Turk. His only strategy was to do the usual circle to the right (First rule in the how to take on Cro Cop handbook) and look for the big ugly chuck liddell overhand right, which you could see coming from a mile away. Totally out of his depth, the eyepoke at least let him lose with a bit of dignity.

by attakdog on Jun 16, 2009 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Seriously are you people that stupíd? “Would have been knocked out sooner or later”

Yeah, but that goes for CroCop aswell, you should know by now ANYONE can get KO’ed at ANY time in MMA, AlTurk might have just knocked CroCop out the next second.

But we will never know thanks to the biggest joke in MMA, Dan “the idíot” Mirgliotta.

by Green Inferno on Jun 16, 2009 8:33 AM EDT reply actions

LOL, There was more chance of the ref getting KO’d with the way Al-Turk was throwing his punches. He was swinging like a rusty gate!

by attakdog on Jun 16, 2009 8:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Crocop did start off slow compared to Al Turk. Al Turk looked impatient, like he thought he was in a bar brawl the first 90 seconds.

by Jeff on Jun 16, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Don´t forget Chuck Lidells eyepoke vs Ortiz. Exactly the same scenario..

by johan-lofgren on Jun 16, 2009 9:28 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t know about you guys but I love it when Mirko knocks a guy on his @ss then just steps back and waves him back to his feet again; good to see him using his hands and putting some punching combinations together, I don’t think he threw one left kick. Makes me wonder if the surgery left him without the ability to throw it like he used to be able to or if he was just saving it and trying to set it up.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 16, 2009 10:24 AM EDT reply actions

yeah seeing him wave his opponents back ont their feet is priceless! I have always enjoyed that!

by JOhn G on Jun 16, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

by attakdog on Jun 16, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

After the Anthony Johnson eye poke, I’m not expecting the commission to do anything about eyepokes.

by Dennis on Jun 16, 2009 10:25 AM EDT reply actions

You know what needs to happen??

The UFC needs to start taking refereeing seriously. Too many of these guys aren’t doing their job. They need to get in there. They need to get closer to the fighters. They need to better understand the eb and flow of a fight. Watch John McCarthy. He’s one of the few refs that really knows what he’s doing, or at least has the confidence to show it.

Just like MMA fighters have evolved, so too must the referees evolve.

by LT73 on Jun 16, 2009 11:13 AM EDT reply actions

The UFC doesn’t hire the refs…the athletic comissions do.

by introvert on Jun 16, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Then why isn´t John McCarthy refereeing UFC fights anymore?
