Keith Jardine vs Thiago Silva fight confirmed for UFC 102

Perennial light heavyweight contender Keith Jardine (14-5-1) will indeed duke it out against hard-hitting Brazilian import Thiago Silva (13-1) at UFC 102: "Couture vs. Noguiera" from The Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, on Aug. 29.
The promotion today announced that the 205-pound slugfest will serve as the co-main event of the evening, supporting the featured fight of the night between mixed martial arts legends and former UFC champions, Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira.
Silva was originally scheduled to hook 'em up at UFC 101 in Philadelphia on August 8 -- until the bat phone rang in Joe Silva's office and demanded that Anderson Silva redeem himself for consecutive stand-and-bland performances at UFC 90 and 97.
Accordingly, Silva (Thiago) was temporarily left without a date for the prom, but the UFC made good on its Silva swap by pitting him against the "Dean of Mean," as well as a few extra weeks to prepare for his new foe.
He has made a habit of demolishing his challengers. Before getting stopped at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" by uber-enigma and current light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida, on Jan. 31, Silva had finished 12 of his 13 fights, including 10 (technical) knockouts.
Scary stuff.
Silva brings the fierce Chute Boxe aggression into his fights (even though he is now no longer with the camp). He has an explosive mix of punches and kicks, which can often leave him open to counter strikes. However, Silva has proven that he can take punishment and dish out more … just ask Tomasz Drwal, Houston Alexander and Antonio Mendes.
His appearance at UFC 102 will no doubt continue Jardine’s (mis?)fortune of drawing dangerous opponents.
Despite dropping a close unanimous decision to former light heavyweight champ Quinton Jackson at UFC 96, Jardine has done his share to be atop the 205-pound ladder, putting together a solid record of (6-4) during his time in the Octagon.
The Greg Jackson-disciple’s resume is highlighted with wins over some of the top names in the sport such as Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell, Brandon Vera and others. He’ll look to add Silva to that impressive hit list on Aug 29.

I got silva in this match up, never been a Jardine fan.
.
Alpha, yes I liked his one interview (Ariel), but thats it! I ripped into him for being a douche a while back, mania and Jesse were like “he’s done a lot for the sport” and riding his nuts! I’ve never been a fan of his except for the fact that he usually has his interviews on tape rather than read them!

This can really go either way. Jardine really needs to strings a few wins together though.
by DSmith on Jun 16, 2009 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I sure hope Jardine comes in as the underdog. There is no way he loses this fight. Jardine can bang it out with some of the best. Silva hasnt even beaten a top 20 yet.

T Silva is the most over-rated fighter in the division. If the “good Jardine” shows up at all, the fight should be his.

anyone know if Banha or Josh Neer are booked t fight anyone?
by JOhn G on Jun 16, 2009 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
CL you are right he is over rated, silva was getting schooled by drwal in round 1 of there fight
silva has only fought 1 good opponent and got KO’d
jardine on the other hand has been hanging with the best for some time now he has wins over gouveia, griffin, vera and liddell and has taken rampage and bonnar to close decision (although they were losses)
i dont particularly like jardine but he has proven that he can hang with the best and beat them but silva has not
i imagine the odds will be close but i’ll definitely be betting on jardine i believe he is a lock for this fight

I have a hard time seeing T.Silva losing here. He goes 13-0 then loses 2 straight? I dunno. I’m a fan of Jardine, because the guy is dog and has fought everyone in the LHW division minues Lyoto and Shogun.
If T.Silva wins, its a TKO Rnd 1.
If it goes past the 1st round, Jardine by decision.

Pretty crappy co-headliner. Lyoto Machida proved that Thiago is not a Top 10 talent in the UFC LHW division. He was all hype and Jardine will prove it. That is, as long as his chin is properly glued back together. I can’t get the image of Wanderlei turning his light off (plus the rape choke).
I actually think that Jardine will come into this fight as a decent sized favorite, like -200

He beat Bonnar! That was one of the worst decisions in ufc to date!!!

For some reason, I just could not care less if Keith Jardine even exists or not on this planet. I have nor interest in watching him fight.

The decision he got over Bonnar was the worst. Stephan won that fight. I’ll never forget it.

I enjoy watching Jardine. He’s no non-sense and down to earth and is a mean SOB. Both fighters will be around after this fight, but I see Jardine taking it. Who cares if they’ve dubbed it the co-main event? It’ll be an awesome brawl though.

I see Thiago Silva taking it, Jardine is barely top 15..
by RoB on Jun 16, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
most would say the total opposite RoB… how is Jardine barely top 15 when he has wins over top 15 opponents? And I’m just assuming you think T.Silva is top 15. I think he’s just outside the top 10, but even though hes 13-0, he beaten a bunch of C level fighters.
by Syn on Jun 16, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
maybe he’s in the top 15, but i don’t think he’s skillful enough.. Tito would most definitely beat him and i think he would lose to several guys that are below him in the ranks right now..
Him beating Chuck Liddell didn’t impress me, neither did his win over Brandon (I think he lost that fight) and his win over Forrest well anybody can almost beat anybody on any given night in the top 15..
by RoB on Jun 16, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thiago is slow, plodding, predictable and vastly overrated. His only impressive opponent was Machida, who made him look like a lethargic heroin addict. Jardine, meanwhile, has consistently hung with the best. Easy money.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 16, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yep, Jardine should win if he can avoid getting taken down.. I do however think that Silva was in his worst shape of his UFC career against Machida

Marquardt/Maia should cleasrly be the co-main for this event; it is a #1 contender match. Instead, Dana sells out yet again and pumps mid-level but known fighters (Jardine) over high-level but as-yet non-mainsteam fighers. Stop insulting the true fans Dana, and let lesser-known guys establish themselves as draws.

Hehe, he exposed your real name john. Anyway, I myself wouldn’t give a flying[knee]f*ck if everybody knows my name. This one won’t go to a decision. Thiago “Slasher” Silva will demolish JArdine as soon as the 1st round opens. Problem is, I’m sure the Greg Jackson camp has the perfect gameplan for Thiago Silva, and that is to counter and not bring the fight to the ground.
Thiago on the other hand, must pour it on while usin’ some head movement to avoid the fast counter-punches of Jardine.

Kinda off-topic, but so what. This fight isn’t even close to news.
Dana says Franklin’s next fight will be against “one of the top guys at 205”. Just speculating on who that will be:
Obviously not Rampage or Rashad, Chuck appears to be done, Shogun’s getting a title shot… I’m thinking the winner of Jardine/Thiago. It would mean Franklin has to wait a while, but all the top guys appear to be booked. Am I missing anybody?
Could Cain be considered a top guy yet? Jones, when he beats O’Brien? Vera, after he KO’s Hammill? I say no. It’s gotta be the Jardine/Thiago winner (in other words Jardine). Would Rich be the favorite against Jardine? He sure as hell would be against Thiago “telegraph” Silva.

Ahhh, nice Alpha. Completely forgot about Forrest. Although it will be hard to consider Forrest a top LHW after another KO at the hands of Anderson… and we definitely know Rich isn’t going to sign up for another fight with Anderson!

Well you never know with Dana…he also said that he’s contemplate to bring Tito’s back to the UFC,b/c he love to see him get beat up!
Obviously it’s b/c Tito is still an attraction.
But this is the excuse that Dana, will give.
by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 16, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah but it’s the truth and that is why Tito shouldn’t sign with the UFC.. just think about it for a second, how can you fight under someone that us in control and wants to see you lose everytime? Dana will only keep giving the worst stylistic matchups possible all the time to Tito, Tito fought Rashad an extremely tough matchup which alot of ppl thought he’d lose (but he won) and then Machida to make him look horrible cause Machida wouldn’t be there to engage with Tito, and Tito still put together a solid performance considering how good and hard Machida is to catch..

Jardine has a way more impressive resume than Silva does and I think that this is Jardine’s fight to lose. Silva has knocked around a bunch of cans and Jardine has stood tall against some of the best in the division. I think Jardine’s unorthodox striking will give Silva fits and force him into making multiple mistakes.
by Buster Bluth on Jun 16, 2009 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Standing I would give the edge to Jardine, but the ground game is very winnable for a black belt like thiago!
Anyway, this fight is going to be a brutal 15 minutes of action. THis fight will steal the show at UFC 102!
by JOhn G on Jun 16, 2009 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i agree and have said it from the start that the thiago silva bandwagon was overrating him, he’s not that great on the ground he’s probably not really black belt level like he is said to be.. wandi has a blackbelt and his groundgame isn’t that great,
that being said jardine by KO i hate picking jardine

Big Jarden fan! He doesn’t get the respect he deserves. The ufc puts him up against tough dudes and he always comes to fight. You never hear him talk shit or any other kind of b.s. Plus he does not have a glass jaw! The shots that he went down on would have taken down a buffalo. And we all saw Page hit him on the button numerous times. WAR: JARDEN

UFC 99 Rant:
Davis won that fight under the current scoring system.
If damage was a big factor then Hardy would have lost a split decision. Either way, Davis got robbed. (And I think Davis is way overrated).
Uno deserved that victory. It was a snoozefest but Uno edged out Fisher. No doubt.
Franklin did exactly what Punch and myself predicted. He kept Wand off balance enough to secure the win. If Wand would have cut his weight w/o being drianed, then no doubt that Wand puts Ace to sleep.
Cain impressed me. All he needs is to get some jits. All this talk about Cain being exposed…blah blah blah. Its his 6th fight. Give him some slack. He implemented his game plan against a dangerous striker.
Swick disposed of an inferior opponent and looked good doing it. (And I hate Swick).

by kevin on Jun 16, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can almost agree with you. I’m not sure I saw Uno winning though. Sure he had a lot of takedowns, but he never went for a sub or unleashed any GNP. While Spencer was getting frustrated at times, at least he was actually doing damage, i.e. working toward victory.
Maybe repeatedly taking someone to the ground and doing nothing IS worth points, but dammit, it shouldn’t be.

Scoring should be based on damage, knockdowns, sub attempts and takedowns(combined with effective striking/subs).

violent mike so thiago losing to silva proves he is not top ten? Is rashad top ten? HOW ABOUT SHOGUN, OR RAMPAGE, when machida beats them, would that prove they are not top ten, if machida smashes them. The point is machida is on another level, even anderson silva said, machida makes him look silly when they spar, so if machida can school anderson, should anderson not be a top ten fighter. LOL

Im still on the Thiago bandwagon. That being said i will be the first fan to recognize that he has some major holes in his stand up game. I’m rooting for him to win, but how can you finish a guy that Rampage and Chuck couldn’t finish? Jardine is real good at avoiding damage and that glass chin rumor that was floating around here some time ago isn’t true. I saw rampage land both left and right hooks and still didn’t drop him. Thiago really needs to gather himself both physically and mentally for this fight, There is no shame in losing to Machida just ask Rashad. Thiago needs a new training camp ATT isn’t taking care of him thay are more interested in Alves. He should talk to Delagrotte.

This is a great card. I wish I could attend it. I’ve Jardine in this one. He is too well rounded and strategic to succumb to Silva Ground & Pound.
by RedRavi7 on Jun 16, 2009 1:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
im taking jardine in this fight. if his record over the past few years says anything, he’s bound to win. since beating forrest in 2006, jardine has been on and off, only winning every other one of his fights . coming off a close unanimous decision to rampage, i’m sure jardine will come in to this fight healthy with a good camp, mentally focused, and motivated to start the climb back up. plus jardine also has in his favor his experience against high quality opponents. silva on the other hand, doesn’t, unless you count his first loss/KO courtesy of current LHW champ lyoto machida. but that’s not to say that guys like drwal, alexander or mendes are pushovers by any means. silva’s stoppages over each of them may have earned him a slot in the top 10 but so far he’s 0-1 against other top 10 205 pounders. combine that with jardine’s awkward striking and timing and the odds are stacked even further against silva. however, you still can’t overlook the fierce brazilian’s hands. thiago certainly has a punchers chance in this fight and if you don’t think so,ask wandy or houston alexander. jardine has a small history of getting caught with powerful shots, resulting in either being dropped or just plain KTFO. as long as jardine comes in healthy with a good strategic gameplan, and stays away any crazy exchanges, he’ll most likely coast out another decision.

anyone hating on jardine deserves to be locked up. look at the past year and a half and the opponents he has fought. jardine has balls of steel. i respect him almost more than any other lhw.
by JB on Jun 16, 2009 2:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Jardine is weak against fighters with ko power who are aggressive. Unless Silva changes his style over the next few months, I see a steamroll KO for him and i’m not really a big believer in Silva.. Just the fights with Houston and Wanderlei have told me Jardine can’t handle that style of fighter.
by Ray Flaherty on Jun 16, 2009 7:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I hear you… but Chuck and Rampage were trying to put him away as well, and nobody disputes their KO power. Rampage almost clowned him at the end, But Keith looked good against him. Based on that performance and Thiago’s last performance, I have to roll with Jardine.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 16, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I really don’t consider Thiago to have KO power. I haven’t even seen him wobble any body during stand up. If you go on youtube and look at Thiagos fights it will show you that he has ended most of them with a flury of punches . It takes him multiple punches to end his opponents if he had KO power it would be a different story. Thiago is real sloppy and tends to drop his hands during exchanges wich leaves him open for counters big time. He is only in his mid 20’s and most fighters hit thier prime in thier late 20’s so he has a couple of years to tighten his shit up big time, wich i hope he does cuase im a big fan.
