Fedor Emelianenko preparing for a 'dangerous' Josh Barnett on August 1

Props: Sherdog.com
Quoteworthy:
"Regardless of our friendship this is something we need to do as athletes. We're going to have to test our strengths against each other. I saw his last fight (with Gilbert Yvel) and one thing I took out of that fight was that Josh has incredible stamina. I know he'll be ready. I have to train accordingly because I anticipate a long fight. He's definitely up there with some of the most dangerous fighters I've ever been in the ring with."
The last man to hold the Pride FC heavyweight title and current WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko (29-1) hypes his long-awaited fight against "The Babyface Assassin" at Affliction’s third venture, which is set to go down from the Honda Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 1, 2009. There has been a lot of talk over the years that both Emelianenko and Barnett were avoiding meeting in the center of the ring because of the friendship they forged during their years under the Pride FC banner. It appears, however, that the showdown was inevitable — they are the last two men standing under the Affliction banner atop their respective division.

Isn’t Fedor’s record 30-1-1NC?
I’m really looking forward to this card. Belfort/Santiago is going to be sweet. I’m also digging a chance to watch Mousasi fight live, although I’m not a big Babalu fan.

without looking it up i think 30-1, with that loss being via illegal elbow.
by SoCalStunNa on Jun 16, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The loss was a cut stoppage. The elbow wasn’t ruled illegal because it happened while Kohsaka was in the act of throwing a legit punch. Fedor did avenge the loss. And there was also a No Contest against Nog due to a headbutt.

Im really hoping that they can add Semtex vs. Jay Heiron to this card!
I also hope that LIl NOg is in action! He is almost as good as big nOG, minus all the WARS!!!

I would also like to see:
Din tHomas vs. Takanori Gomi!
Eddie Alvarez is about to be through with his Bellator obligations..one of his closest training partners is a very good friend of mine, and he expects Eddie to fight in Affliction sometime soon, if they last!
Alvarez vs. Gomi in Affliction would be bad ass!
I would like to see them bring over some world class lightweights to the USA that havent fought here often or at all like:
Gomi
Hellboy
JZ
Aoki
Mach
Kawajiri
Alvarez
Iishida

Alvarez should be able to put away Gomi. I personally want to see Aoki submit Gomi with some fascinating hold. Actually, I would like to see all those guys thrash Gomi. Ever since I’ve gotten hardcore into MMA, Gomi has been trash. Since the Diaz fight, he’s steadily got worse. I know Gomi has wins over some of those listed, but still, I dont like him at all.

Alvarez is too good for Bellator, no disrespect intended to that promotion (they put on some great fights). He should be in Dream or the UFC, the two best LW divisions out there.

Incredible stamina? Man is fedor nice or what. Barnett gassed in the 2nd minute of rd 1 and got smashed hard from the bottom. Not since Igor V did i think, i would see another fighter submit to strike from mount. Unless someone has an aggressive grappling game, we won’t see the awesome display that josh put on against Big Nog. Fedor is gonna smash to hell from his guard after barnett realizes that he can’t stand with him.

Yeah NNR, I found that a little amusing myself. Chalk it up to Fedor being a helluva guy.

JJ: He is too good for Bellator, but I cant argue withhis career move. He is making something like $250,000 (i think) for wining their silly tournament! Eddie isnt comanding thqt kind of money yet in his young career. NOt to mention, next season will officially be on English speaking tV network, so its going to be great exposure for Eddie!

could be a long fight, unless he does a sylvia job
by Bons on Jun 16, 2009 7:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, it could also be a close fight… unless it’s a blowout.

No it’ll end fast…unless it goes the distance.
by MongoMan on Jun 16, 2009 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Psh. Fedor will knock him out… unless he submits him first.

I Can’t wait for Mousasi/Bobalu and Belfort/Santiago. Fireworks written all over them! SHould be a good card!
I like Barnett, he has faced top competiton and came out on the winning end. However, maybe its just me, but i don’t see Fedor (who i can’t wait to see get beat one day) having any major issues with Josh. Fedor will dominate Josh’s improving standup and once on the ground Fedor has the skills to end it quickly. I think this will be a decisive win for Fedor.
Affliction IV
Barnett/Arlovski
Bobalu/Tito
Diaz/Belfort @ 185
Yvel/Sylvia
Ninja Rua/Lindland
little NOG/Moussasi
“Grim” Rogers/Alexander Emelianenko
Soon, tho, the continual recycling of fighters will get old. They need to bring in more fighter and weight classes if they hope to keep their heads above water for any length of time.

sorry man. affliction’s head is not above water. folks are losing money every show.

I dont think they are even close to thinking about shutting it down yet. If they were, I dont think they would be signing new fighters to 3 fight contracts….THen again, everyone has an oppinion, but no one really knows what kind of financial shape they are in! To know that, we have to know what their expectations were, and I dont think they expected to start making money right out the gate…Thats just my oppinion. LIke I said, we can all pretend, but NONE of us have any clue what kind of shape they are in….IMO this wont be their last show!
Instead of knocking them because they arent the UFC…I will enjoy them for as long as they last!

Same here John. They’ll probably run out of match-ups sooner or later, but so far I’m just stoked to be getting to watch more fights. MMA fans should be behind Affliction.

im so sick of that TIRED ass Lame argument about how they are recycling fighters….They have added top fighters to each and every show since the 1st one.
Affliction 2 featured new fighters: Babalu, Soko, Gilberty Yvel and a few other fighters
Affliction 3 new fighters: JOrge Santiago, MOusasi, rumored appearence by Takanori gomi.
They are adding new top fighters from all over the world on each and every show. What more do you want? No upstart mma company in America that has to compete with the UFC has managed to provide such star studded cards so fAST!. NOt to mention Affliction has brought tOP fighters from Countries all across the globe to the USA. Fighters that the uFC never managed to bring over to the states!
also, even if they did recycle fighters, which they arent…right n ow they are only holding events once every 6 months TOPS…so who cares?
by JOhn G on Jun 16, 2009 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i don’t care right now. I said it “will” get old, meaning future!
i’m all for Affliction and outside UFC venues, but you build your show on the back of a handfull of talent.
Fedor, Barnett, Arlovski, Sylvia, Lindland, Belfort and have them be the main attractions each time.
They are STARTING (just) to do exactly what i said the need to, more fighters and weight classes.
by SoCalStunNa on Jun 16, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
where do u see Arlovski being featured at Affliction 3?
where do u see Lindland on the affliction 3 roster?
I dont see Sylvia, and he wasnt on their last show either!
No they arent JUST STARTING TO DO WHAT U WANT THEM TO DO!!! They have been adding fighters since the 1st show!

Wow wohoooo Loooolz at John – ohhhh they got soko, ahhhh Yvel ammaaaaazing, Santiago man what a mooooonster and ohhh Gomi he ruuuules yeeaaahh. Sylvia, Lindland and Arlovski are too busy getting CAT scans to fight man and get real those are a bunch of B level fighters only coming to pick up an inflated payday.
Sobral v Gaygard is THE fight on this card and I can’t wait to se it – the rest is Meh. If you really think Affliction can justify its existence financially much longer you are on Crack.

i always thought barnetts moobs were big but timmy’s moobs make barnett look like a school boy. fedor will eventually loose to somebody i just dont want it to be barnett.

i wish fedor had nick diaz’s personality…think of the marketing potential of a guy like that…he would have been in the ufc years ago…he could have named his price and the ufc would have met any demand he had…

Boxing has a guy like that… his name’s Floyd. I’ll pass. I’m always more impressed by the humble guys who know they’re great… but don’t feel the need to tell everybody. Besides, Russian trash talk wouldn’t have the same impact.

WAR BARNETT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Going to be a great match…
I think Affliction want it to be entertaining and to go past the 1st but in reality, it won’t. Josh looked great against Yvel at Day of Reckoning but Fedor’s far superior in stand-up and on the ground.
If Barnett even tried to mount Fedor and pound him out (like he did against Yvel), he’d learn that Fedor has an amazing defensive guard to arm-bar…just ask Mark Coleman.
My call: Fedor, TKO, about 2 minutes into the 1st round.
The bigger question is who’s next for Fedor?
by Jay on Jun 17, 2009 3:20 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think match ups against Overeem and/or Rodgers would be pretty interesting to watch, they could sign Werdum (who is no slouch). I think the best thing for them to do at the next event would be to have a unification bout for Strikeforce and WAMMA belts.
by Gleb on Jun 17, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Barnett is soooo overrated. Fedor will catch him just like he does everyone else.
